ok so the layers

direct homage to old bond movies

appears to subvert certain expectations about race and class in british society (eggsy isn’t oxford educated like all those other assholes)

actually reinforces these expectations (eggsy got into kingsman selection process bc of his dad, literally all the candidates are white)

subverts this again (dad is implied to be from a similar socioeconomic background to eggsy, harry was just in love with him lol)

harry is (let’s be honest) a gay man and therefore automatically falls completely outside the realm of the traditional british gentlemanry or whatever

harry’s idea of gentlemanhood has nothing to do with your background and more to do with “being better than you were yesterday” but it turns out that actually means “being willing to lay down your life to uphold britain’s legacy of colonialism and keep things running business as usual”, which eggsy inherits from him

ooh gender talk, local alastor’s gender is something i have a hard time pinning down actually, which is unusual for a muse of mine, but he’s kind of all over the place?

- the world is a stage = all gender is drag (see: judith butler)

- alienation from manhood due to his asexuality (ace men have a lot to say on the subject that I can’t paraphrase in a bullet point)

- performative southern gentlemanhood as a form of manhood he doesn’t feel detached from, including the use of power as protection of the weaker (see, the comic, the hotel after pentious threw down, ‘want me to kill that guy for you?’ as gender)

- an affinity towards women friends & generally getting along better with women / being more comfortable with them / relating better to them. -> he’s had plenty of time to wonder huh, was I supposed to be a woman, then? (and he concluded he wasn’t ‘supposed’ to be anything.)

- absolute perturbation that will wood can just say ‘i wish i was a girl’ casually. you’re allowed to do that?

- physical sex dysphoria. he did not sign up for a dick. he doesn’t want a vag either tho, he doesn’t want tits, he wants nothing.

- sticking him in drag where he doesn’t pass is dysphoria inducing. passing doesn’t bring a sense of gender euphoria though.

- defensiveness about having his manhood brought into question because straight people love to treat queer men as Men Lite or Not Real Men and he’s really not about to deal with the same shit he’s dealt with for both his disinterest in sexual pursuit and for having dated men / being out as bi since the 20′s.

if you ask him he’ll just say he’s a gentleman. he doesn’t find having an internal sense of gender to be meaningful or consequential. he presents himself as a dude and it doesn’t need to be any deeper than that to his audience.
