EPILOGUE.
make sure to read event 4 first!
It’s been a couple months since what happened. Even though it only occurred in the span of mere hours, what happened in the laboratory still haunts you. After the lab’s destruction, Urso had escorted all the missing people out. Cold cases now declared closed began to bloom all over the country, family and friends rejoiced. Most didn’t recall what happened to them, but they all recalled a familiar man named Rhys.
You stand here, in front of a closed casket. They recovered what they could of Jared’s body. You mourn for not only him, but others Rhys has taken. For now, though, the service for Jared drawls on. The man at the front talks about the loss of a young, bright kid in the community and how much he’s contributed. When he finishes, the next person comes up, talking about memories he’s shared, both happy and sad. You look around, all gazes attentive, and you’re glad to see familiar faces - one of which being Urso, the ghost of Katherine next to him. He’s so focused on the eulogy that he doesn’t notice you until the last second, giving you a comforting smile before turning back.
By the end of the service, there’s not a single dry eye in the crowd.
As it finishes, you turn away - perhaps you linger, maybe you check your phone, but you don’t miss the spirit standing next to the grave. He smiles at you, waves, points to the casket as if he’s making a joke about it. Dead boy grins before turning, lacing a hand with another spirit next to him.
As the sun sets and people leave, Jared and Mickey, hand in hand, walk off.
                                     THANKS FOR PLAYING!

EVENT: KARMA
warnings for: death, electrocution
buckle in folks.
It’s blueprints to an EMP.
It comes to Rowan with no shock, and as expertly as she can manage, following the scribbled paper, she assembles it. How incredible that something so small would cause so much chaos...She just needs the perfect time to use it. In a small linked batch, just shutting down one SQUIP would work, but with a large case like this...
Regardless, she turns to Strix. The longest prisoner, and the way she’s memorized the schedule would help. She tells the angel of a certain time, when food is given to the prisoners, is when most SQUIPs come in. After all, Rhys is all about efficiency, and having one person give food to this many people would be a waste of time.
Rowan waits -- and god, she hopes. Hopes that Rhys won’t take anyone away, she can’t lose anyone else.
She waits.
When they walk in, posture straight with trays of food in their hands, Rowan turns to Strix. The tiefling nods, and the angel clicks the on button. Immediately, screams ring through the air, so loud and so human that it’s bound to make anyone cover their ears. It’s not long before bodies collapse, the doors to the containers open, and the prisoners are set free.
Some of them walk out with confusion, others with hesitation, with fear of Rhys, but it’s safe to say everyone leaves. Some of the already squipped prisoners rush into the room --- those that were controlled entirely were shutdown, but those that are only squipped experienced a minor headache. It’s not long before their freedom is halted, however, as Rhys practically bolts into the room, an unfamiliar anger in his features.
“I suggest everyone get in their containers now before --- “ what’s left of the electricity crackles, lights flickering. What was once a well lit, well maintained laboratory turns into something that’s more sinister at face value. The air grows cold, and Rhys’s furious expression morphs into horrified. Hands falter, and he looks around, eyes widening. Sweat that he didn’t even know he could create pools in his palms, and he takes a step away.
“No, no, no, no --,” Circuit heart stills, breath hitching. “Come on, we can talk this out -,” he’s speaking to something that you can’t see -- that is, of course, until the light flickers one more time, and standing there is a figure you’re not sure you recognize.
It’s Katherine.
“Talk this out my ass! Did you ‘talk it out’ when you kidnapped me and killed me for my limbs?” Rhys takes another step away, perhaps to run or to switch into another body, but Jared’s spirit makes sure to hold his soul down by attempting to possess him. Katherine advances, and Rhys has no choice but to stay put.
“You don’t want to do this, Katherine - “
It’s Jared that shuts him up this time.
“You don’t want to do this, Katherine!” The boy mocks, laughing afterwards, “do you hear this asshole? Sorry you’re not getting a redemption arc, buddy! You manipulated, like, everyone. There’s no talking this out.” Rhys is shaking, and as a last ditch attempt to intimidate, he bares his teeth. Unfortunately, he ends up looking more like a cornered dog.
“I was waiting for the day someone found that double glass. Remember when you said I was smart without my SQUIP, Rhys? Remember when you wiped my memory that Urso was my SQUIP when I was still alive? Remember you manipulated me and separated me from Urso because you said I didn’t need a defective SQUIP? Remember that, Rhys?” She hisses, delivers a quick kick to his body, to which he drops down onto his knees.
“Katherine, don’t do this.”
“Why shouldn’t I?” She stares him down, picks up the discarded EMP and waves it around.
“I can bring you back to life. I can - I can give you your SQUIP back. I’ll do anything. Katherine, don’t do th - “
He’s cut off mid sentence. In one swift motion, she links Rhys to the EMP, and proceeds to overload the latter. The machine glitches, head jerking wildly as a slow drawl of his words, coming out of his mouth like tar. It’s nearly incomprehensible, a hand reaching for Katherine before the EMP quite literally bursts in the spirit’s hands, and Rhys falls. The light from his eyes die, and Jared floats out, raising his eyebrows.
“...Good fucking god.” He walks forward, lets Katherine inspect Rhys’s body and the rest of the lab. Jared smiles, waves his hand a little awkwardly.
“Don’t feel bad if you killed me. It’s like, infinite naps.” An attempt to cheer up the group. “...I miss all of you. Move on. I’m gone now, but you guys live your life. And say I was like, insanely cool.” A grin. “By the way, the revenge thing? Not that bad.”
It’s over.
Jared fiddles with the controls, lets the group out, and Katherine makes sure to destroy everything. Once she’s done that, her spirit finds peace, moving on. The lab is wiped clean, any squipped people are escorted out by Urso.
You can go home now.
EVENT #4 CLEARED !!

Trying to escape Rhys’s aid, at least, keeps them from passing out, less shallow gasps taken in and out in a more spacious manner as they stumble out of his range of grasp. They still can’t stay upright, however, legs giving out beneath their weight forcing them to the ground. “S...squips are supposed to h-help humans—n-not this! You.. this.. this is /not/ my family-”
"In the end, you’re a SQUIP. We’re helping humans, linking them together, finding a way to turn humans into SQUIPs...That way, all humans are linked together.”

“Don’t’ouchme—“ ecoming lightheaded, they flinch and clumsily bat away his hand; the threat of contact only spurring their hyperventilating.
A sigh, before Rhys stares at them, helping them through their breakdown. Not out of care, but more out of self-interest than anything.

Viria had, of course, been hounding Rhys since Deana had been dragged down to whatever hellish place this was. She had no idea who the poor man was (man? She wasn't sure, she heard metal being kicked), but anyone who was being treated like that by Rhys was an ally of hers. As a ghost, Viria could do little, so she gave the fallen man(?) a gentle pat on the head (it would be like a cold wind)... and then, just a little further away, she picked up a beaker and chucked it at Rhys' head. Whoops.
He’d give no visible reaction to the beaker being thrown at his head. He mumbles something under his breath as he picks glass out of his hair. I’m proud of you, Viria.

Bitter eyes watch over Rhys from a distance. This place is a hellhole, and Urso knows it. He has full access- not a prisoner, like the rest- and he still hates it. He hates the looks the other machines give him, the side eyes. He's defective, and Rhys makes sure he knows it every day. But defective or not, he's still part of the project. He can still look through the files, interact with the prisoners. And today, he's doing the former. Digging through seemingly endless files. (1/?)
He's hoping to find out more about the prisoners. He knows there are files on every single one, every person they've been watching. What he isn't expecting is a file with his factory number-- Fx8764-- printed in small, neat letters at the top. He practically rips it open- why would they have a file on a staff member? There's a paper- written in code. Obviously not for his eyes. He disregards it in favor of the only other content in the folder- a small chip. A squip hard drive. (2/?)
As he looks it over, he gingerly touches the side of his head. He has a chip already. He already has a hard drive, so why...? An uneasy feeling rises in his chest as he forms a theory- god, he hopes it isn't the truth. He takes a shaky breath, stands up a little straighter, and marches over to Rhys with eyes full of an unnatural fury. "What is this?" He asks coldly, holding the folder in his hand. He keeps the chip tightly in his hand- he won't let Rhys have it. "What did you do?" (3/3)
Gaze drags up and down, a scowl on Rhys’s features. Urso is an annoyance to him, the baby cousin you’re forced to drag around on outings with your friends. “I replaced it. Are you an idiot?” A cruel laugh -- Rhys bends down patronizingly to meet his gaze, smug smile on his face. “You were defective. I was hoping that a new chip would...fix some of your glitches, but I suppose that wasn’t the case.”
With one swift motion, the SQUIP swipes the folder from his hand, “it’s a report. I always knew you were too stupid to decode things.” A pause, before an unexpected kick in Urso’s metal stomach, smile lighting his face, “do you believe me as stupid to think I don’t have cameras all over the place?” He keeps his stance steady, lets Urso fall to the ground and keeps him in place with a vice grip.
“You really are defective.”  He forces the chip out of his hand, takes it with a smile, gives Urso another quick kick to the side before walking off, posture straight.
Asshole.

Despite not knowing whether it was a command or simple suggestion, they’re further failing to reign in their volatile state; hugging themself by the arms, breathing rapidly while their thoughts and emotions spin through their mind—grief, shame, fear, anger, guilt, panic–grif, shame, fear—until their shallow breaths are beginning to overpower their reflexes.
Rhys stares at them, raising his eyebrows before sighing, crouching down next to them. “Take deep breaths.” A simple command, as a hand reaches to rub their back.

Eyepatch is gone, and demons blue eye flares up- literally, actually, considering the blue flames now visible around her eye -, with a growl, she stands up. "I will literally sacrifice my form and screech as you as an angry black dragon. I do not want to deal with your patronizing bullshit, Rhys."
“The effect is lost when you can’t get out of the container.” A sigh, a raising of his eyebrows, “in any case, it doesn’t matter to me.”

Panting, the demon reappears in her container. Her stupid container. Oh she hated this but at least she had a brief moment of freedom. "Stupid.... people making summoning circles.... outta salt....." she flops on the ground, more tired than usual.
“How unfortunate. Did you have fun?” Patronizing as always.

Even though they've regained much of their composure, Sev's hands still tremble and there's no telling for how long tears will continue to spill down their cheeks, off and on in an almost perpetual state of upset. "What're... you going to do with m-/me/..?" Again, Rhys' words are echoing in their mind; to count themself lucky... that they could've just as easily been imprisoned like the rest.
“You are...quite the enigma, Sev.” A cold laugh, a tilt of his head, as machine stares down. “Don’t cry. You have nothing to cry for, you’re with family now. In any case, you’ll probably be set to work as some sort of secretary.”

@knowsmagic gets a random clue!
They give you food every couple of hours. It’s enough to sustain you, but of course, you know the schedule by now, don’t you? It’s been weeks, you know when they feed you, you know the cycle of who feeds you and what kind of SQUIPs feed you, you know the entire schedule by this point.
The tray they give you is different. You don’t know what it is, but you can see in the back, a different kind of metal was welded into it, as if someone took out the back and then replaced it. With a heat source and enough prying, you could probably get it open...
There. Once you practically rip it open, a piece of paper falls out. A crudely drawn map of what you assume to be the lab, barely legible labels, a ‘K.B’ marked in the corner of the paper. It’s old and fading, but it’s something.

@impulseloved gets a random clue!
One of the walls is different.
Different from your container, different from every other wall, it’s different. If you banged on it hard enough, it seems to budge just slightly. Wedged in between two glass walls in Rowan’s cell - double layered, one something like trick glass - is a piece of notebook paper. It’s rolled up, and when retrieved and items splayed, you can see the following.
A high voltage generator circuit. A coil. A push button switch. A 12V battery. The paper is crumpled, burnt slightly at the edges and very crumpled from what seems like years of being in there. There’s something like a diagram, but it’s faded. You can try and make it out, though, and attempt to piece together what you have.
