Here is a take. You need the context of the character outside of the relationship in order to fully appreciate the relationship, in an analytical/understanding sense. (What I mean is you can obviously enjoy it regardless) Most bubbline shippers are more drawn to Marceline’s context outside of the relationship than to Bonnie’s, which often leads to minimizing Bonnie by characterizing her as uncaring or a purely selfish partner, minimizing Marcy by characterizing her as purely a (Bonnie’s) victim who did nothing wrong, of oversimplifying the whole relationship by only acknowledging the bad parts (just the angst) OR the good parts (just the fluff). It’s really frustrating actually bc to me they’re both characters who shed a light on the complexity of the show as a whole, and when most people realize that they tend to latch onto the second layer beneath the surface so to speak— the big “reveal” that Bonnie isn’t just tea parties and smiley faces, and that Marcy isn’t just scary pranks and evil laughter.

The thing is, THIS IS NOT THE LIMIT OF THEIR COMPLEXITY. They definitely are not just those things, but they are not just “evil scientist dictator” and “depressed lost soul” either! They’re so many things, just like every other major character (and many minor ones) in the show. I see many of you getting into Bonnie’s complexities without sympathy because you think it’s cool or sexy that she’s evil or whatever, but there’s so much more to her than that. And while I’ve seen much more sympathetic introspection on Marcy’s character, it still tends to place her as the Victim with a capital V within the context of their relationship. Understandable considering we mostly see it from her side, and considering we mostly see the parts of it where it’s strained. But come on!! I know fandom is very capable of filling in blanks, but I rarely see that for Bonnie when it isn’t in service of a different character. I get that she is very withholding, but honestly so are all of them. That’s exactly what Obsidian is about, but I don’t think anyone waited for it to come out to acknowledge that Marceline was more than the series could directly show of her. So many people in fandom are willing to dig SO DEEP for interpretation, but with Bonnie, it’s like she surprised or angered or amused you so much by being 2-dimensional than you never acknowledge the dimensions beyond that. And if that’s because you don’t see them, then how are you seeing every other character’s so clearly?

My Roman Empire is the continuous demonization of Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum and Rose Quartz. Y’all will swear up and down you want complex female characters that toe the line of morally grey, unhinged and insane but when Cartoon Network gave you two of them bitches back to back y’all went feral.

These are two of the most complex and hard to really understand characters in there respective shows with captivating arcs and motives yet y’all dragged Rose Quartz name through the mud for YEARS and I cannot escape the never ending PB is toxic for Marcy as if Marcy’s main problem solution wasn’t genocide for thousands of years and Greg didn’t isolate his son from his human family which caused a wide rift in his sense of self for years to come.

The gag is, I hate both these women. I do not like either of them as people, they are awful, ESPECIALLY BUBBLEGUM cause at least Rose only fucked over her Family. Princess Bubblegum counts as generational trauma just because of the families (plural) that she’s ruined.

With that being said, I will always defend a female character from unfair hate, y’all hate her cause she’s a woman and not because she’s actively problematic.

I’m so soft for a relationship where a bubbly pink princess is actually a corrupt politician often oblivious to injustice, great at manipulation and in general not a very good person*, while a black clad goth that is perceived as a monster is actually a misunderstood fighter for human (aka persons) rights.

Also none of them are presented as 100% good or evil in the narrative and they are so in love everyone and their parents know that.

Heh. As they say find yourself a girlboss so sweet no amount of upholding oppressing status quo would eliminate your desire to kiss her.

*The way I described both Glinda and Bonnibel was for comedic purposes and is kinda reductive as they do have the ability to change and to really care. I wouldn’t necessarily call them inherently good only lost under their roles and masks… rather - complicated.

Oh. And one more thing. Elphaba and Marcy internalizing the fear people have for them, partially believing they are inherently bad and choosing to play into their image of a wicked one? Gets to me every time.

its confusing cuz Bonnie started as a basic self insert OC, BUT then i started putting her in a lot of different AUs and separating her from myself. considered making her blonde so she doesnt look like me LMAOOOO...

now theres 100 different versions of Bonnie with different groups/personal projects, BUT they're all relatively similar. I'll expand in this post! super long post btw i dont stop talking.

i'll separate this post by her general story, the differences between AUs, then art! if something is (bolded/like/this), that's because the information varies between AUs!

SO IF I HAD TO EXPLAIN HER GENERAL STORY...

HERE is a google doc to a longer, more detailed version of her backstory.

TLDR; she would visit her grandparents' orchard every summer as a child and get violently haunted by slendersick ghosts. because the ghosts deteroiated her mind, she would try to kill a ghost when she was 12, only to realize it was a real woman. She dragged the body deep into the forest (which slenderman ending up eating) and did not return to the orchard until she was (18/19/20). the story that follows varies from AU to AU

SO THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AUS...

the 'main' AU i used Bonnie in is a personal AU between my irl friends called Washed Up. it takes place in a fictional beach town we made called Almyros Coast, set in SoCal. . . AND THAT AU IS SPLIT INTO TWO AUS LOL. theres a more fun one that we use to let our OCs interact with the canon creeps and worldbuild with. theres a second version where ghosts still follow bonnie, which are victims of a serial killer that has been stalking bonnie's best friend, camila. antics ensue and the story is unfinished!

i have the 'Creeped' bonnie, which doesnt really have a huge story. i just insert her into my Creeped AU, where she lives on the farm that the proxies work on. this is VERY recent cuz of some anons asking abt it, so i dont really have a story for it. i dont intend to give bonnie a notable place in my Canon Creeped Au, but in a world where Bonnie is an important character, she'd be used to figure out paranormal issues in the forest

i think often when we get bubbline we get it from marceline’s perspective like, her gaze and her lens, where it’s very easy to identify with marcy firstly… whether that’s stakes or even obsidian. peebs is kind of the love interest that we get less interiority from and i think the show generally keeps a little distance with her, so the fact that like. we’re usually not privy to bubblegum’s feelings in the same way we are with other characters and we STILL got that scene of her sniffing that damn sleep shirt and then the implication that she loves the shirt so much it could awaken an ancient deity with the sentimental attachment on it is CRAZY. like that’s SO MUCH right there about what’s happening in girl city. please be serious bonnibel.

The Science Behind Adventure Time

Hello and welcome to my TED Talk-

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING IS A NINE PAGE ESSAY ABOUT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE END OF THE WORLD IN A KID'S CARTOON SHOW, AND CONTAINS DISCUSSIONS OF NUCLEAR FALLOUT, CANCER, RADIATION, AND OTHER HEAVY TOPICS. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

Also, if there's anything I say in this that I'm repeating from someone else(because let's be honest there's probably something), and it bothers you, lmk!

Introduction

Adventure Time is a show that ran from April of 2010 to September of 2018, totaling ten seasons and 283 episodes. It followed Finn the human and Jake the dog, who went on weird adventures and got into trouble. Other major characters featured are Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum, Marceline the Vampire Queen, BMO, and Lady Rainicorn, along with others like Flame Princess, Lumpy Space Princess, and the Ice King. The Ice King was the main antagonist for most of the first season, until the Lich was introduced near the end of season one. Adventure Time is known for its far-fetched, wacky, and odd creatures and characters. But what if I were to tell you that they aren’t as far-fetched as they seem?

Background Information/What We Know

The strange things we see in Adventure Time were caused by the end of the world—also known as the Great Mushroom War(GMW). The GMW was a nuclear war that resulted in the near extinction of humanity, as well as the creation of new races and species, ranging from vampires to hug wolves to mutated coyotes. Not much is known about the war, but we do see bits and pieces of it in flashbacks. 

The exact time of all of this is unknown, but it is speculated that it happened in the late twentieth to early twenty-first century. It most likely took place between 1998 and the early 2000s, as sitcoms from the 1980s are referenced by multiple of the surviving human characters, the appearance of a Generation 3 iMac computer in The Lich (which became available to the mass public in 1998), modern smartphones in flashbacks, and internet phrases and expressions frequently used by the characters. 

The cause of the end of the world was a nuclear bomb—most likely more than one, as two bombs can seen exploding at opposite ends of the planet in the episode BMO. We also know that the Enchiridion was finished after the war, most likely on August 13th, 2021, going off of the numbers that are on the back of the book. 

Part One

During a flashback, Simon is shown looking up at the sky. In the sky, there are more than thirteen planes, which are most likely what was used for dropping the bombs. These planes are probably Boeing B2-9 Superfortress planes, which were used to drop nuclear bombs during World War II. In the episode Finn the Human, we get our first look at the actual bomb, which is nearly identical to the Fat Man bomb that was used in WW2, and was dropped by a Boeing B2-9 Superfortress. 

We’re told by Farmworld-Marceline that the bomb was poised to bathe the Earth in mutagenic horror, meaning that it was a mutagenic bomb. Now, you might be thinking, what’s the difference between a mutagenic bomb and a nuclear bomb? Are there any differences?  The simple answer is yes. 

Nuclear bombs are made to cause mass destruction using the energy released when the nucleus of an atom is split or merged. Mutagenic bombs are bombs that can cause direct DNA damage. However, nuclear bombs can be mutagenic, so Marceline could mean that it was a mutagenic bomb, or a nuclear bomb with mutagenic effects. Going by how much damage it caused, it was probably the latter. 

For this study, I’m going to say that the mushroom bomb is the same as a Fat Man bomb, and the fallout happened in 2010 (because, well, that’s realistically the time it probably happened). This bomb was dropped on the Japanese city Nagasaki on August 9th, 1945, and resulted in the deaths of over 70,000 people. 

However, I don’t think that the Fat Man(FM) was the only bomb used. 

In the intro of every Adventure Time episode, we can see things from the old world—a broken TV, cassette tapes, and, most notably, warheads. Warheads that are different from the mushroom bomb. 

So I went digging. I dug even deeper into history and everything we know about nuclear fallouts, and I found it—the first of two nuclear weapons ever used in warfare; the Little Boy. 

The Little Boy(LB) was used in the bombing of Hiroshima, another Japanese city, on August 6th, 1945—three days before the FM—and had an explosion force equal to 20,000 tons of TNT. 80,000 people died as a direct result of the bombing, and tens of thousands more died later. 

Out of the 120 FMs and the five LBs made, only one of each was used, leaving 119 FMs and four LBs left. There are three warheads in the intro, which means that three of the four remaining LBs were dropped but didn’t detonate. 

Scientists have estimated that an all-out nuclear war between the United States and Russia would result in over five billion deaths. 

The Great Mushroom War took place in approximately 2010. In 2010, there were around 6.7 billion people on Earth. 

The Great Mushroom War almost wiped out the entire human race. See where I’m heading with this?

The Great Mushroom War, a nuclear war, almost caused the extinction of humanity. If roughly five billion people died as a direct result of the fallout, that would leave around one billion people left alive on the entire planet. Due to radiation, food would be destroyed, and temperatures would drastically change, which would cause more deaths. The people we see, the actual humans we see, are very few, because there are very few actual humans still alive.

Part Two

The only characters we see that have five fingers are Marceline, Simon/Ice King, Marceline’s mother, Elise, and the Lich, who were all born before the end of the world. This means that either all of the future generations lost a finger, or these four characters all got an extra finger, both of which are possible. 

Oligodactyly is the term for having less than the normal amount of fingers/toes, and is the exact opposite of polydactyly. Oligodactyly is a congenial condition that is often, but not always, a genetically inherited disability, and can also be caused caused by mutations. So, if people born after the fallout all have less than five fingers, it’s very likely that it was caused by exposure to radiation. 

Children born after nuclear fallout commonly have polydactyly. However, since Marceline, Simon, Elise, and the Lich were all born before the fallout, this is less likely to be the reason that they’re the only characters with five fingers. 

The tribe of people that Marceline meets all have four fingers, which supports my theory on oligodactyly. 

“My mom and I didn’t talk about bad stuff. When she got really sick, she didn’t even tell me,” [Distant Lands: Obsidian] Radiation can cause multiple kinds of cancer, the most common being leukemia. While it’s very likely that Elise just had radiation poisoning, I want to mention leukemia as well, because she has some of the symptoms of it as well—irritability, coughing up blood, sleep problems, feeling cold, and excessive sweating. Coughing up blood is the most obvious, as we see her cough blood onto her hand. Feeling cold is based on the fact that she’s wrapped up in a blanket while in the middle of the desert, and depending on what time of the year it is, the temperature could be higher due to radiation. The entire time we see her in Obsidian, she has eyebags(and noticeable ones at that, which means that the animators wanted us to know that she was having trouble sleeping). When she’s trying to fix the motorcycle and tells Marceline to go to teh secret clubhouse, she’s very irritable. Excessive sweating is the biggest stretch, but I added it because she’s sweating a lot of the times she’s on screen. 

Skin conditions. Exposure to radiation causes skin conditions. 

Ice King is blue, Marceline looks like a walking corpse. See where I’m going with this? 

It does seem like Marceline’s skin has always been grey(and it makes sense that it has because Hunson is blue-ish grey), but there is a difference in her skin color between her when she was younger and her when she’s older. Her skin is lighter and more blue. Now, it’s not lighter by that much, but it IS lighter, and it’s not something that you’d notice while watching the show. Radiation doesn’t cause skin to turn blue, but remember that Marceline isn’t fully human—radiation probably affects demons and demon hybrids differently than how it affects humans. 

If you look at Simon before and after the fallout, you’ll probably be able to tell the differences. Even before his skin turns blue, it’s definitely lighter than it is in scenes like flashbacks and the tapes Finn and Jake watch in the season three Christmas special. This isn’t the only way he suffers from exposure to radiation, though—he also has several psychological issues that were caused by the fallout. The crown is what makes his mind deteriorate, but constant exposure to radiation definitely doesn’t help, and, if anything, probably made the crown worse. 

I would talk about the Lich, but it’s been said that he wasn’t originally human, and it seems like he’s meant to be a kind of primordial being. 

Back to Marceline, in the Stakes finale, she says “Smelled something bad.”  This is similar to something an actual survivor of nuclear warfare said; “There was a strange smell all over.”  You could make the argument that this doesn’t have anything to do with the fallout, but while she was saying this, it showed flashbacks of when she was younger and living in the apocalyptic world.

Part Three

The first species I’m going to talk about are the gums, as they’re some of the most humanoid creatures, but they’re still very supernatural. I talked previously about skin conditions, and that’s what I believed caused the gum people. Radiation can change the texture of your skin, and can make it appear pink, red, tanned, light, or dark. It can’t turn your hair pink, but you want to know what can? Sun exposure, chlorine exposure, chemical reactions, and nutrient deficiencies. Hair can also become squishy due to protein deficiency. Hair that lacks protein can feel mushy, sticky, and gummy, and clumps together. It’s safe to assume that in an apocalypse, nobody is going to be getting all of the nutrients and proteins that they should be. 

The mutated coyotes are probably the most realistic creature in the show other than humans. Yellow sclera and red irises are commonly caused by radiation. The mouth on the chest and the extra eyes are less likely to happen, but they are theoretically possible in terms of evolution.

Radiation can also cause abnormal brain development, which means that animals could possibly mutate to be able to do things humans can, like how most of the less humanoid creatures are able to talk, or how that creepy FUCKING deer can STAND ON ITS BACK LEGS LIKE A PERSON (I really don’t like him-).

The oozers are, essentially, zombies, which are scientifically possible. Zombies can’t be caused by radiation, but cells can be changed. There are diseases that cause animals to basically become zombies, and while humans aren’t affected by these diseases, cells can change because of radiation. If the cells change, it could make it possible for humans to catch these viruses. 

Conclusion

Now, obviously, this is all just speculation, and a lot of Adventure Time isn’t able to be explained by science, and it was meant to be fantastical. This was made for fun, and I wanted to show how even though it’s clearly a magical world, a lot of it can be explained by science. 

Two-headed lizards exist, why can’t any of Adventure Time’s creatures exist? After Chernobyl, cats living in the area went feral, meaning that radiation can change the mental state of an animal. Cows produced radioactive milk. Taking all of this into account, the things in Adventure Time seem a lot less far-fetched. 

(Side note: maybe the crown was affected by the radiation, too, and that’s why it caused Simon’s mind to deteriorate-lmk if you'd like me to go more in depth about that as well.)

thinking once again about how the fionna and cake series writing simon and betty's relationship as overtly codependent was a brilliant way to recontextualize ice king's entire character. there's always been a lot of attention paid to how simon Respects Women while ice king Doesn't and having simon's most important relationship (the one that defined his obsession with princesses as IK) be codependent, with betty having been obsessed with him, really bridges that gap. simon grows insane under the influence of the crown, but betty was NEVER mentally stable, even as a human, and under the crown's influence simon (as IK) desperately attempts to recreate that dynamic, one that he only found fulfilling due to his own ignorance of its unhealthiness. bc what man doesn't want a woman who is obsessed with them!

betty being an unstable person is also really making me think about her similarities to bonnibel/why bonnibel is IK's "favorite" princess. because that discussion generally seems to start and end at "well bonnibel is also an intellectual and she bears a passing physical resemblance" but I think there's way more to it than that. think about how simon perceives betty: as selfless, benevolent, and always in control. this is the same veneer that bonnibel presents to the world. pretty much every character in the series who meets bonnibel realizes at some point that she is not the sweet, benevolent ruler she claims to be; they react to this realization with feelings of shock, betrayal, and even repulsion. contrast this with IK's perception of bonnibel: regardless of how cruelly she treats him, IK always romanticizes her behavior. she's just feisty, she doesn't know how to express her feelings, she's playing hard to get, etc. he's the only major character who remains in complete denial that bonnibel is hiding something more sinister behind her sugary-sweet surface, just like simon always remained in denial that betty was an unhealthy and depressed person. of course, the way betty treats simon couldn't be more different than the way bonnibel treats the ice king, both because they're different people with different personalities, but also because, obviously, IK's advances are unwanted. but the fact that IK projects simon's perception of the kind of person betty was onto bonnibel results in that perception being reinforced. one of the ways in which betty and bonnibel are most similar is in how dysfunctional they are, how lonely they are, how desperate they are for love, and the masks they wear to hide this fact; ironically, this is an trait that simon/IK is unable to recognize in either of them, but it may have played a role in what subconsciously attracted him to bonnibel in the first place.

How Fionna and Cake explores PB and Marcy's characters while only having them in a 15 sec cameo

As much as I would have loved to see more of PB and Marcy in Fionna and Cake, I feel like it still does a really good job at exploring their individual characters as well as their relationship through how they're reflected in their alternate universes.

I really loved the star, and I think it does these fascinating character studies of pb and marcy and does it while they're one-off side characters in this episode. Its efficient, but still really impactful, and its all done through these alternate versions. I think it's something that can really only be done due to the extensive worldbuilding from AT, and the complex storytelling Fionna and Cake takes on through these alternate universes.

Part 1: Marceline and Bonnibel's characters:

In AT and Distant Lands Obsidian we've seen Bonnie and Marcy's flaws. Bonnie can be cold, paranoid, controlling, stubborn, prideful, obsessive and Machiavellian. We've seen her willing to hurt people for what she views as the greater good. She's a fairly utilitarian person. I think we see her darker side beginning in season 4, and its explored in season 5 and 6. Some examples off the top of my head include a) imprisoning flame princess as a baby b) her surveillance over like, everybody c) Throwing everybody in tree trunks' wedding in prison. These reasons are why a lot of people really dislike her, and see her as an authoritarian dictator, and I don't think they're totally wrong to feel that way. However, we see her grow in season 6, she realizes that some of the stuff she's doing is messed up, and she makes a clear effort to do better. in season 7 when she's usurped, she finished her redemption arc. Finn, Flame Princess, and Marceline, the people in her life play an important role in helping her become a better person. (S6 EP 22 "The cooler", S6 EP23 "The Pajama War", S7 E2 "Varmints"). One of the major things that also really softens her character is her clear love for her people. There's an undeniable motherliness to how she cares for her people and her kingdom that there's something really sweet about. Even though she doesn't always show it well, she does have a lot of love. Love for her people, love for her brother (S7E1 "Bonnie and Neddie"), love for Marceline, and love for her friends (Finn and Jake). She built her whole kingdom because she wanted to have people to be with!

Marcy is also a bit morally gray. Especially in the beginning of the series, she is shown to be unconcerned with people's feelings or the impact of her actions on others. in general, she's apathetic towards the feelings of other people, and primarily sees them as a source of entertainment. She manipulates and plays elaborate mind tricks on people for her own amusement. The song from her debut episode puts it best when she says "I'm a thousand years old and I just lost track of my moral code". She's not an evil person, but over time and through all the things she's lived through, she struggles to empathize with people. She's "burnt out on dealing with mortals".

when we first meet her in S1E2 "Evicted". She literally kicks Finn and Jake out of their house (that s technically hers) even though by the end of the episode it's clear she has other options and is really only doing it to fuck with them. She even tries to kill Jake (which only doesnt work bc Jake uses his powers, but how would she know that?). By her second appearance in S1E22 "Henchmen" it becomes clear that she isn't actually evil, she mostly likes playing mind games. Nonetheless, still fairly messed up. We also see her callousnes In S2E1 "It Came From The Nightosphere" When Hunter Aberdeer terrorizes Ooo, and goes about the land stealing souls and murdering people, Marceline is wholly unconcerned with the people her dad is murdering, and really only worried about getting her bass back (/focused on her own daddy issues). As the series goes along, and as she spends time with finn and jake she mellows out a bit, and gets better. She works through a lot of her issues during the Stakes mini-series (S8 E6-13). We also see her past, and a bit of how her childhood, often lacking consistent, healthy parental figures to model from, and how some of her issues came to be. In fact, I think a large part of why she’s so messed up to people at the beginning of the series is because since Simon’s the ice king, and all the humans are gone, she hasnt had a positive influence on her for a long while.  By the end of Stakes, we see a more grown up, empathetic Marcy. We see this new insight in the finale (S10 E13 "Come Along With Me") when she talks to PB, trying to get her to not go to war. Marcy really just needs people to ground her. Because her life has been so unstable, and so many people in her life have been lost, or have left her (her mom, her dad, simon, Bonnie), she takes to lashing out at people to scare them away in order to avoid rejection. All this is really made clear in Distant Lands: Obsidian.

Part 2: Vampire universe PB and Marcy

In Fionna and Cake E7 we see the versions of them without the things that made them better people. We see how their circumstances created their most toxic selves; for Marcy, that's not having Simon, and for PB it's being put in survival mode, and not having the love of her family.

Princess Bubblegum, instead of being a Princess, is the leader of a resistance against vampires in an apocalyptic world. She's very ruthless, cold, and militaristic. She's dead set on taking down the vampires no matter the cost. as she says "I'm gonna slay him (the Vampire King) or die trying". She only stops to pick up Simon, Fionna and Cake, because she figured that Cake's "murder skills" would be useful in taking down the vamps. In the scene where she refuses to stop to help strangers on the road calling for help really illustrates her mindset. In this, her and Fionna have the following exchange: F: "Quick! Pull over!" B: "No distractions" F: "But you stopped for us." B: "I stopped for your mutant cat. Big picture." When Martin dies, and Fionna apologizes since it was kinda her fault, Bonnie says this “You should be! It’s your fault I’m down one man, and more importantly, one tank. We see her do to the extreme what she's done in the past when she's trying to keep everything together: push all her feelings down, distance herself emotionally from others, and stick to her utilitarian ways. This isn't to say she's all bad. her end goals are nobel. She's trying to save humanity. 

Bubblegum also shows a lot of aggression and ruthfulness. 

She also seems to be very obsessed with Marcy in a very sworn enemies (gay) way. Liek she hates her but she’s also totally obsessed with her and stuck in this powerbattle with her. Marcy makes her crazy mad when she calls her a loser. This is VERY personal to her 

Marcy, without Simon or Finn and Jake’s influence- toss in the VK as a father figure, has totally lost touch with her humanity. Her carelessness towards the lives of others is dialed up to a 10 with her literally murdering henchmen for saying something she didn't like. She’s still playful, but in a much more twisted, evil, crazy way. Her favorite plaything being bonnibel. She seems equally obsessed with Bonnie, and even admires her a little bit. She gets mad when her henchmen talk bad about her and question her as to why she hasn’t killed her yet. She doesn’t seem to actually want to kill her that much because she likes her too much: VK scolds her for “toying her prey”, and tells her to “finish it off”.

Bonnie in kind , as much as she seems to hate Marceline, also seems to secretly like her too, at least in my opinion. Bonnie knows a lot about Marceline; she knows her first name.  Her adamant refusal of “I would never” is loaded with so much history.  When Marceline offers her “You know you could join me” Bonnie seems to briefly consider it, if only for a moment before saying “What’s the point? The population’s crashed and you're running out of food.” There’s something very romantic in that final declaration of “if you poof me, you’ll die too” “together then”. Their dying moments fighting in each other's arms to the death mirrored by Gary and Marshall-lee kissing.
