Aang: Did you HAVE to stab him?
Azula: You weren't there. You didn't hear what he said to me.
Aang: Fine. What did he say to you?
Azula: “Oh yeah? What are you gonna do, stab me?”
Aang:
Aang, turning to Zuko on the ground: Really?
Zuko, wincing: I see now where I went wrong.

The Science Behind Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
Alright, SO! This is gonna be formatted a bit differently from how I formatted the Adventure Time one(which, by the way, you should totally go read it took me forever). Instead of being split up into three parts based on what I talk about in each part, this is going to be split up into three parts that each focus on one of the three seasons. But, without any further ado, welcome to the Science Behind Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts!
(@sparrowseasonz HIIIII :D)
WARNING: THIS CONTAINS TALK OF BLOOD, HEALTH CONDITIONS, AND GENERAL OVER ANALYSIS OF A KIDS SHOW. THIS ALSO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR ALL THREE SEASONS OF KIPO AND THE AGE OF WONDERBEASTS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Introduction
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts follows thirteen-year-old Kipo Oak (Karen Fukuhara) and her friends, Wolf (Sydney Mikayla), Benson (Coy Stewart), Dave (Deon Cole), and Mandu. The show ran from January twentieth, 2020, to October twelfth, 2020, and totaled three seasons and thirty episodes. The first two seasons followed Kipo, Wolf, Benson, Dave, and Mandu meeting different species of mutes (what they call the mutated animals) and trying to find a way to get Kipo back to her dad, while also mentioning Scarlemagne (Dan Stevens) as someone that both the humans on the surface and the mutes feared. He was the main antagonist until season two, episode eight establishes Dr. Emilia (Amy Landecker) (who was introduced in season two episode one, Paw of the Jaguar.)
Background Information/What We Know
The show establishes very early on that it takes place around the year 2220, which gives us (okay, me-) a clear timeline of events that I can use as a form of measurement (which you’ll see in a bit). We also know that it takes place in Los Angeles, and Kipo’s burrow specifically is located underneath the Los Angeles Four-Level Interchange at the junction of US Route 101 and state Route 110.
The event that gave the animals human-like intelligence is referred to as The Great Mutant Outbreak (which will be referred to as the GMO (HA) to save space), meaning that some kind of mutation happened all over the world that caused this. If you read my Adventure Time science study, then you know that I really like radiation, and, specifically, the mutations that it can cause—so, yes, that will be included in this.
Most humans fled to live in underground cities called burrows. Emilia, Emilia’s “henchmen” of sorts Zane (Carlos Alazraqui) and Greta (Anna Vocino), and Lio (Sterling K. Brown) and Song (Jee Young Han) Oak, Kipo’s parents, are all from a burrow of scientists whose mission was to figure out what made the animals mutate, and make a “cure” so that they could put humans back at the top of the hierarchy.
Season One
CHARACTERS
I’m going to start by going over the notes I wrote down during my rewatch, starting with Kipo. The first thing you notice when watching a show for the first time (at least for me) is the characters. And teh first thing that I noticed when watching this show is the fact that Kipo is purple. Now, purple-tinged skin is real, and it’s usually the result of insufficient oxygen in the bloodstream, which leads to the strange coloring, a condition that’s referred to as cyanosis. Common causes of this condition include congenital heart defects, methemoglobinemia, lung abnormalities, and certain environmental factors. Congenital heart defects are structural heart problems present at birth that can affect blood flow and oxygen saturation. Methemoglobinemia is a condition that can occur due to exposure to nitrates, which is commonly found in contaminated water (where hemoglobin can’t efficiently release oxygen). Nitrates are molecules made of nitrogen and oxygen that are important to both human growth and the health of plants and animals, are found in air, water, soil, and certain foods, and are also used in some fertilizers. Lung abnormalities are conditions that impair lung function, which can prevent effective oxygen exchange, thus leading to poorly oxygenated blood. Certain environmental factors or conditions during pregnancy can contribute to congenital anomalies that lead to cyanosis in newborns.
Onto her hair; pink hair, or pink-tinged hair, is not something that you can be born with (tragic, I know). However, you can be born with white hair. White hair is often a symptom of albinism.
On the topic of albinism, pinkish eyes can also be caused by this condition. Albino people lack melanin (the thing that gives skin, hair, and eyes color, and also protects people’s skin and eyes from ultraviolet light damage. This lack of melanin can cause very light-colored eyes, which often appear pink or red due to the reflection of light off the blood vessels in the eyes. Other causes of pink eyes are congenital eye conditions and vascularized eyes. Congenital eye conditions lead to unusual eye color, due to congenital cataracts. Congenital cataracts can sometimes cause a red or pink appearance in eyes due to underlying tissue being more visible. In some cases, infants can have a reddish or pinkish hue in their eyes due to high vascularization, which may be temporary and related to irritation or feeding issues shortly after birth.
DAVE
Cockroach. He’s—he’s a cockroach, accept it, it’s reality, no matter how much I wish he was a cicada, he’s a goddamn cockroach.
Episode One
The usability of a car after 200 years of disuse would be extremely unlikely without significant maintenance and restoration efforts. Several factors would affect its condition over such a long period, including mechanical degradation, fluid degradation, fuel system corrosion, battery issues, and environmental impact. Mechanical degradation is an issue because, over time, the mechanical components of a car would suffer from corrosion, rust, and wear. Metals can oxidize, and rubber parts, like hoses and tires, become brittle and deteriorate due to exposure to moisture and air. Fluids such as oil, transmission fluid, and coolant can break down when left untouched. Oil can turn into a sludge-like consistency, causing severe damage to the engine if it were to be restarted without proper maintenance. Fuel can spoil, leading to varnish formation that can clog fuel lines and injectors. Leftover fuel in the tank may also lead to rust, and moisture condensation in the tank can contaminate the fuel. Rechargeable car batteries would likely be completely drained and could be damaged beyond repair. Even lead-acid batteries can sulfate, making them unusable.
Spiders are, in fact, edible.
DEATHSTALKER VENOM EFFECTS SPEEDRUN LES GO:
Swelling, visible redness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, abdominal cramps, convulsions, respiratory issues, and fluid retention.
Here, have a list of all the components of the toxin as well:
Chlorotoxin, scyllatoxin, charybdotoxin, and agitotoxins.
THE MOON CAN BE PINK. I REPEAT, THE MOON CAN BE PINK!! Reasons for this are atmospheric conditions, pollution, and particles. The moon can appear to have a pink or reddish tint during specific atmospheric conditions, such as when it is near the horizon. This phenomenon occurs due to the scattering of light, much like sunrises and sunsets, where light must travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, filtering out shorter blue wavelengths and allowing longer red wavelengths to dominate. Airborne particles, such as dust, smoke, or pollution, can enhance the scattering effect, leading to a more pronounced rosy hue. For instance, wildfires or volcanic eruptions that release particulates into the atmosphere may cause the moon to appear redder or pinker.
The term "pink moon" originates from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, named after the blooming of the moss pink flower, also known as creeping phlox, which appears during the same time as April's full moon. The name is a cultural reference rather than a physical descriptor of the moon's color.
Many cultures have given names to different moons based on their seasonal associations. The "pink moon" is one of these names, with no actual change in the moon's inherent color. Other names attributed to full moons include the "harvest moon" or the "wolf moon," which reflect various aspects of nature and tradition.
While it is highly unlikely for spot remover to last for 200 years, there are a few factors to consider in this context.
Shelf life limitations include things like chemical composition (most spot removers contain various chemicals, including solvents, surfactants, and enzymes. These components are not designed to remain stable indefinitely. Over time, even if unopened, chemical changes can significantly alter the product's effectiveness and safety), packaging (While some containers are designed to keep chemicals stable, no packaging can maintain perfect conditions over two centuries. Factors such as degradation of materials, exposure to air, and temperature changes can compromise the integrity of the product even if it is sealed), and expiration dates (Cleaning products typically have a shelf life of around 1 to 2 years when unopened. Some specialized products may last slightly longer, but the concept of a product being effective or safe to use after 200 years falls outside normal expectations and usage guidelines).
Other things to keep in mind are storage conditions and natural deterioration.
The longevity of any chemical product can be affected by how and where it is stored. Extreme temperatures, humidity, and exposure to light can lead to quicker degradation, making it highly unlikely for the product to remain viable over such an extended period.
Over decades, the chemical composition may change due to various factors, including potential reactions with the container material or the environment, leading to ineffective or even potentially harmful byproducts.
Episode Two
A bike could theoretically be usable after 200 years of disuse, the real viability depends largely on its material composition, the conditions of its storage, and how well it has been cared for over the years. Restoration would likely be needed to ensure functionality and safety for riding.
Soda cannot, in fact, last for over 200 years. Its max shelf (box? can?) life is 6-9 months.
Cockroaches do actually drink soda.
Episode Four
Unfortunately, snakes can’t play guitar because of physical limitations and sensory perceptions.
Music can cause reduced stress/increased relaxation in animals.
Monkeys exhibit remarkable memory capabilities, particularly when it comes to remembering auditory patterns such as songs and drumming sounds. Research indicates that primates can remember and respond to musical cues similarly to their responses to vocalizations, which highlights their ability to process and retain musical information.
Monkeys can recognize their blood relatives even if they’ve never met them before!
Mandrill pheromones can, in fact, potentially influence the behavior and physiological responses of other primates.
Episode Five
TECHNICALLY cockroaches DO have “blood” but it’s called hemolymph and is different from our blood.
Dogs wear turtlenecks lol
Genes CAN be activated like that by stress and/or danger.
Episode Six
Genes activating CAN cause hair growth on arms!
Jaguars have the most powerful bite of all big cats, exerting a force of about 1,500 pounds per square inch (psi) and can carry up to about 2ookg.
Episode Seven
Water fountains can potentially work after 200 years of disuse.
Season Two
Episode One
The flamingoes are theoretically possible! “Polycephaly” - having multiple heads:)
Episode Five
Monkies do, in fact, eat ants.
The concept of inserting jaguar DNA into a woman's eggs presents significant biological, ethical, and practical challenges. Below is a comprehensive overview of the potential scenarios and implications of such an action:
Genetic Compatibility Issues:
Genetic Differences: Humans and jaguars are vastly different species with significant genetic divergence. This includes differences in chromosome numbers, gene sequences, and regulatory mechanisms that are critical for the development and functioning of an organism. Specifically, jaguars belong to the family Felidae, while humans belong to the family Hominidae.
Integration Challenges: Even if jaguar DNA were introduced into human eggs, the likelihood of successful integration and a viable hybrid embryo forming is exceedingly low. The introduction of foreign DNA from a vastly different species conflicts with the mechanisms that govern human embryonic development. The existing cellular machinery would likely reject the jaguar DNA as incompatible.
Potential Biological Consequences:
Unintended Mutations: Genetic engineering attempts, such as inserting jaguar DNA into human eggs, could lead to unintended mutations or genetic abnormalities. Techniques like CRISPR have been shown to introduce off-target mutations, which can affect multiple regions of the genome unpredictably.
Developmental Abnormalities: If an attempt were made to create a viable embryo with jaguar DNA, it could result in developmental issues. These might include malformed structures or failed embryonic development due to incompatibilities between human and jaguar genetic instructions.
Consequences for Human Health:
Health Risks: If genetic modifications were attempted, potential health risks could arise, including the introduction of new allergens or unforeseen health issues due to genetic alterations. Inserting jaguar DNA could also provoke immune responses or sensitivity, leading to various health complications.
Research Implications: Any scientific endeavor aimed at integrating jaguar DNA into human genetic material would require rigorous research protocols to assess the safety and efficacy of such procedures. Current understanding emphasizes that the risks outweigh any potential benefits in the absence of a clear medical imperative.
In summary, inserting jaguar DNA into a woman's eggs presents significant genetic incompatibilities, ethical dilemmas, and legal hurdles. The biological feasibility of creating a viable human-jaguar hybrid is extremely low, and even if attempted, it could lead to substantial health risks, developmental problems, and ethical concerns surrounding genetic manipulation in humans. The current scientific landscape generally reflects a cautious approach towards such genetic editing endeavors, prioritizing human safety and ethical standards.
Season Three
Episode Three
While wolves are adept at using scent to gather social information and can recognize the identities and social ranks of members within their own packs, the ability to specifically identify the alpha of another pack by scent alone remains uncertain. The complexity of individual scent marks and the context in which they are encountered plays a significant role in how wolves interpret olfactory signals. Thus, while it is possible that certain dominance indicators may be accessible through scent, direct identification of an "alpha" from a different pack based solely on smell is not conclusively supported by current research.
Conclusion
I can’t believe I actually finally finished this, wow. This project started waaaay back in October when my pal Orion suggested it, and my research notes have been sitting in my google docs unfinished since October 29th. I’m not sure when I finished rewatching the show, but I do know I started either October 15th or 16th. And, yeah, I watched through the entire thing and took notes on things to research, so that took a bit, lol. Same thing I said in my Adventure Time conclusion, all of this is just speculation, not canon, and I’m just a kid that likes science and cartoons. As always, I’m open to suggestions on what else I should do like this, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
