WEEK 3 kicks off with the Patriots @ the Jets on Thursday Night Football

The Jets got out to an early lead and never looked back as they dominated the Patriots 24-3. The Patriots struggled offensively so much that starting QB Jacoby Brissett was replaced with rookie QB Drake Maye late in the 4th.

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers looked very much like his old self and went 27/35 for 281 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Jets defense was also impressive, sacking Brissett five times and overall, effectively bottling up the Pats offense. Jets go 2-1 on the season while the Pats fall to 1-2.

Babylon LA isn’t your ordinary skate brand. Founders Lee Spielman and Garrett Stevenson are also in Odd Future-affiliated punk band Trash Talk. Spielman and Stevenson want their brand to bring the same sense of community punk rock and skateboarding gave them as teenagers. PASSAGE TO BORDEAUX

August 7, 1941

HOLLYWOOD. Aug 7— If you have read “Berlin Diary” — and it seems as if the whole world has read William Shirer's day to day accounts of the events that led up to the war - you will interested to hear he is coming to Hollywood. (1)  He will fly her weekends starting the last week in October to confer with Erich Pommer and Oliver H. P. Garrett (2) on “Passage to Bordeaux” the RKO thriller that is being prepared for production. (3) Shirer once was a foreign correspondent and was present at the historic Munich meeting of Hitler, Chamberlain, and Daladier. (4)

This movie is apparently giving Lucille Ball the opportunity for which the has been crying. She is to have the lead In “Passage to Bordeaux” with Robert Stevenson (5) handling the megaphone. Shirer will not actually do any writing — merely suggesting scenes and situations to Garrett the script writer.

FOOTNOTES FROM THE FUTURE

(1) Berlin Diary ("The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent 1934–1941") is a first-hand account of the rise of Nazi Germany and its road to war, as witnessed by journalist William L. Shirer. Shirer covered Germany for several years as a radio reporter for CBS. The identities of many of Shirer's German sources were disguised to protect these people from retaliation by the German secret police, the Gestapo. It sold almost 600,000 copies in the first year of its publication and was widely praised by academics and critics.  This article makes it sound as if the book might become a film, but it is just its author who was Hollywood-bound, to be an advisor on a subject he knew well. 

(2) Erich Pommer (1889-1966) was a German-born film producer and executive. Pommer was perhaps the most powerful person in the German and European Film Industries in the 1920s and early 1930s. He was producer of Fritz Lang’s landmark silent film Metropolis in 1927. During World War II he came to America, where he joined RKO. One of his first projects was producing Dance, Girl, Dance starring Lucille Ball and Maureen O’Sullivan. 

Oliver H.P. Garrett (1894-1952) worked as a journalist before coming to Hollywood in 1927. He would later share an Oscar with Joseph L. Mankiewicz for best screenplay for Manhattan Melodrama (1934) and became a founding member and two term vice president of the Screen Writers Guild.

(3) So what happened to Passage to Bordeaux?  Why was it never made?  Loving Lucy (1982) by Bart Andrews and Thomas Watson sums it up pretty well.  Instead, Lucille Ball was cast (some would say mis-cast) in the film Valley of the Sun, released in early 1942.  The New York times labeled it “ambling” and others called it “forced”. 

(4) On September 30, 1938, British and French prime ministers Neville Chamberlain and Edouard Daladier sign the Munich Pact with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. The agreement averted the outbreak of war but gave Czechoslovakia away to German conquest. 

(5) Robert Stevenson (1905-86) was a director and writer, known for Mary Poppins (1964, Oscar Nominee), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) and King Solomon's Mines (1937).  

In 1944 Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) directed the similarly-titled Passage To Marseille, another French town like Bordeaux, in a WWII storyline meant to recapture the magic of Casablanca in 1942. Frequent “Lucy” performer Hans Conried had an uncredited role in the film.

A little known fourth-round draft pick who played at Conference USA school Western Kentucky, Zappe — pronounced ZAPP-ee — was pushed into action two weeks ago when starter Mac Jones and veteran backup Brian Hoyer went out with injuries. He now has now won two games in as many starts.

On Sunday, he threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots buried the Cleveland Browns 38-15. It was the 324th career win for coach Bill Belichick, who tied George Halas for second on the NFL's career list.

"We're just playing football," the 23-year-old Zappe said. "It's what we've been playing since we were 5 years old, so it's fun to play with these guys."

Zappe, starting for the second consecutive week, threw second-half TD passes to Tyquan Thornton and Hunter Henry as the Patriots pulled away from the anemic Browns.

Zappe finished 24 of 34 passing a week after throwing for 188 yards and a touchdown in his first start, a 29-0 win over Detroit.

"He has pretty good instincts, but again, there's a lot for him to learn," Belichick said of the young quarterback. "He saw some things today and he learned from them, he was able to take advantage and make a couple plays, so it was a solid performance."

The Patriots' offense took a while to get going in this one, and the Browns (2-4) never really did.

Late in the first half, Rhamondre Stevenson broke through, bounced left and tore down the sideline for a 31-yard score.

Early in the second half, Zappe hooked up with Jonnu Smith for 53 yards to get down to the Browns 20, and a 13-yard completion to Henry set up first-and-goal at the 2. Three plays later, Thornton grabbed Zappe's short toss in the end zone.

Later Patriots linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley hit quarterback Jacoby Brissett as he was throwing, leading to a pick by Jalen Mills that gave them the ball at the Cleveland 40. Three plays later, Zappe found a wide-open Henry, who ran untouched for a 31-touchdown and a 24-6 New England lead.

The Browns' offense produced only a pair of field goals by Cade York in the first half.

Cleveland's Nick Chubb, who entered leading the NFL in rushing, didn't have a double-digit gain until late in the third quarter. He had 23 yards rushing and 14 receiving on that drive, but again the Browns stalled — and York came on for a 51-yard field goal.

Chubb finished with 12 carries for 56 yards, both season lows.

Brissett, who finished 21 for 45 for 266 yards with two interceptions, threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Amari Cooper in the fourth quarter but a 2-point attempt failed, leaving it a two-score game with 6:22 left.

New England sealed it with a 19-yard end-around for a touchdown by Thornton. Brissett fumbled the ball away on the Browns' next drive, leading to Stevenson's second TD, a 6-yard plunge with 3:40 left.

It was the most points allowed by Cleveland this season and its most lopsided loss.

"Every way you can get beat — offense, defense, special teams, coaching — we got beat," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. "They beat us, and we also beat ourselves a few too many times."

Defensive end Myles Garrett said Zappe caught the Browns off-guard when he came out throwing.

"The plan was they were going to run the ball, based on what's happened the last two weeks," Garrett said. "But we shouldn't have made it so easy on him."

HISTORIC WIN

Belichick, who is 324-159 including the playoffs, has a chance to pass Halas next Monday night at home against Chicago — the franchise with which Halas won all his games. Don Shula tops the list with 347.

"You can't win games in this league without good players, so I've been very fortunate to coach a lot of great players and have a lot of great coaches through the years," Belichick said. "A lot of those guys have gone on to great coaching careers and the players, obviously, some are going to the Hall of Fame."
