How to change your life with Gamification
Disclaimer stat point and daily quest (points) are used interchangeably and are different from main/side quest (points)
₊˚ ‿︵‿︵‿︵୨୧ · · ♡ · · ୨୧‿︵‿︵‿︵ ˚₊₊˚ ‿︵‿︵‿︵୨୧ · · ♡ · · ୨୧₊˚
You may have already heard about Gamification. It’s a strategy in which you use game mechanics, elements and principles to apply them to your everyday life to enhance your performance, studying etc.
But how should I use this technique to get the most of my life?
This is a guide for implementing Gamification in your life and thoroughly explains the process.
In my guide I am inspired by manhwa systems like in the solo leveling manhwa. Normally a system gives you stats such as strength which one can upgrade and become stronger. Upgrading is archived by quests that give you exp which also can increase your Rank e.g from F Rank to E Rank all the way to S Rank or higher. Quests are differentiated between daily quests and non daily quests. There are more functions such as items and gold but for the basic setup they are not needed
First you need to create your stats. In the solo leveling manhwa there are six stats: Strength, Vitality, Agility, Intelligence and Sense. You should have six stats but you are not obligated to use the ones from solo leveling. Idk how you can implement Sense and Vitality.
I strongly recommend you to have a stat called Willpower which indicated if you did every quest that you set for yourself and how well you stick to the system as a motivation.
Tumblr media
As you can see I copied the stats Strength, Intelligence and Agility from Solo Leveling and added Willpower, Discipline and Stamina.
Some other ideas for stats are:
Charm (Beauty stat: I would use this if you want to glow up)
Charisma (If you want to improve your social skills or want to speak ------------ more professionally etc. I would use this stat
Health: If you want to eat more healthily or want to diet or want to -------- get your sleep schedule right etc. I would use this stat
You can get creative and cater to your own needs
Now if you have your stats you have to create a daily quests with each of these stats
Here is my example:
Tumblr media
My quests don't look like much but you have to gradually work yourself up to your goals. Someone who has never done e.g Pilates in their life can't do a 30 min Pilates workout from day one without loosing motivation in the long run. So if you want to e.g. get your sleep schedule right I would set your wake up time e.g. 5min earlier every cycle until you reach your goal and maintain it.
A cycle equals 21 days. If you finish a cycle you can reflect your performance and make the daily quests harder or change the stats if they don't fit into your goals. Especially your first cycle is more of a test and try period. But you should keep your stats as they were and should not change them except if they really don't serve you.
Main/Side Quest stats:
These quests are quests like ''learn … language for 15min''. They are more of a to-do lists task.
I would use this formula for categorizing these tasks:
ASSIGNMENT (S) LIST
The ASSIGNMENTS
:::
:::
:::
CATEGORY: main/side exp etc.
DIFFICULTY: e.g. SSS
CLEAR CONDITION: e.g. finish all assignment(s)
TIME LIMIT: e.g. 7 hours
REWARD UPON COMPLEATION
:::
+2 exp
Stats in crease: e.g. Mentality +1 Intelligence +2 Motivation +1 Skill +1
PENALTY UPON FAILIURE
:::
all stats -1 (e.g.)
emotional damage e.g. +3
DURATION: e.g. 24 hours
Items confiscation …
DURATION: ???
Emotional damage stat explained:
This stat affects your conversion rate to points in the daily quest stat points. Normally the conversion rate is 10 e.g 10 main quest stat willpower point = 1 daily quest willpower stat point. Per +5 emotional damage you have to collect 5 extra points to converse the stat point
Example 10 points are needed in the main quest stats to converse to one stat point with a rate of 5 emotional damage point you need 15 points. A 10 point emotional damage point equals a 20 point conversion rate and so on.
How to decrease the emotional damage stat:
If you complete main/side quests as a reward you get -1 emotional damage point which you can use to get your emotional damage point to a good level. Emotional damage can't get into the negative.
The difference between daily quest stats or stats and main/side quest stats and leveling up is explained below
Stats in/de- crease in the main/side quests doesn't affect the normal stats that we've established so you have to create a new stat page for the main/side quest stats to count the points.
Like this:
Tumblr media
Ten points on e.g intelligence stat on this list equals one daily quest intelligence stat point.
The conversion rate is as such 10 to 1 which means if you have e.g ten agility points you get one agility stat point.
How to level up:
Every time you finish a daily quest you gain a point for the Stat (first pic) you can only gain one point per stat per day. If you gain 10 points at every stat in the daily quest stat you can level up. If you don't finish a quest you will loose 1 point from the stat that you would've gained one point from.
Ranking up:
First you have to choose a range from which you can level up e.g F to S Rank / F to SSS+ Rank etc. than you have to find a starting point which you gradually increase e.g 20 (start point) increases +20% per Rank up.
How to increase your Rank:
Completing all daily quests gives you 1 EXP while the EXP gain can value in main/side quest the rest is explained above.
Here's my example:
Tumblr media
Zyklus is German for cycle which I just tracked here and is explained above.
Lastly you need something that motivates you and in Solo Leveling it was a Punishment Zone if sung jin woo doesn't complete his quests.
For myself if I don't complete 5/6 quests i have to do the punishment.
For the punishment you have to do something you detests (and strains your body)
My example are 150 burpees
A full page can look like this:
Tumblr media
One last thing is that you can 100% customise this approach you can add coins items etc. which also exists in a system, change other things as you like but the foundation has to remain intact.

executive function strategies / focus-enhancing techniques
pls feel free to reblog or comment ur own!
Pomodoro Method 🍅
25 minute interval of focusing + 5 minute break x2
followed by a 25 minute interval of focusing + 15 minute break
repeat!
you only have to focus for a set amount of time!
& it gamifies your work
I use Pomofocus but there are other sites and apps as well !
Note: You can lower these time intervals to something more accessible at first! If 2 or 5 minutes feels more achievable, start there.
Tumblr media
Body Doubling 💑
I usually get a friend who also needs to work on call
This can also be in the form of having a study with me stream on, working in a café, or being around someone in person.
The accountability and parallel play is very effective for me, even if we are not actively collaborating or speaking!
Tumblr media
Break Down Tasks 🔨
This is very important to neurodivergent folks.
I think about it like a computer program. When you explicitly list each step of a process, in its simplest steps, it does a significant amount of work for your brain before you've even started.
So make a list of steps for your individual tasks, breaking them down.
Tumblr media
Rituals 🕯️
This can be whatever you want it to be!
Light candles, play a specific order of songs, chewing gum.
Doing these before each work session can make connections in your brain that improves focus and memory.
Tumblr media
Note: This is a great gateway to Habit Stacking as well. This is a method outlined in Atomic Habits in which you link new habits to existing ones. For example, after making a cup of coffee, as you already may do every morning, you sit down to plan or review tasks.
Tumblr media
Productive Procrastinating 🫣
This is admittedly not always a good idea...but it works!
Basically, it's having a list of things I need to do, and choosing to do something less urgent instead of the biggest or most important project first.
This can help relieve some of the pressure in starting a work sesh and create momentum!
For example, instead of immediately starting that 5 page essay due tonight...I might exercise or clean for 10 minutes first.
May or may not be what I'm doing right now.

How to Survive a Haunting now launched on Kickstarter! Running 3/2/23 to 3/31/23!!
Tumblr media
ID in Alt
In How to Survive a Haunting, you play as Stranger, an entity plagued by ghosts who try to possess you, and take over your home and your life. Luckily, you have come across a mysterious old journal, written by a man only referred to as The Journalkeeper. He has spent his life studying ghosts, and made it his mission to record everything he knew about how to defend yourself from them, and how to tame them
On the journey to taming your ghosts, you will represent your accomplishments through tokens, keep a magical deck of cards that help you ward off unearthly possessions, and log your adventure in a journal. The Journalkeeper will walk you through each stage of this process, and teach you how to customize the game to fit your specific needs
Haunting is a gamified mental health aid, designed to help people learn more about how their body works, adopt a challenge mindset, and achieve post-traumatic growth. It is designed with a light horror aesthetic (though no actual scares in the game) to meet people in the mental space that they’re at, and not make light of extremely difficult circumstances. It is geared towards the recovery of those with trauma and (c)PTSD
Tumblr media
artwork by @prose-n-scripts
Haunting was inspired by my own journey of recovery and exploration with gamification and tabletop roleplaying games as I struggled for years with PTSD, dysphoria, mental health issues, and more. Games were a safe space for me, and allowed me to grow and heal more than almost anything else. With games, I was able to put the power of recover into my own hands, go at my own pace, and focus on what was important to me
I wanted to create Haunting to help all the people who may find traditional therapy unhelpful, intimidating, inaccessible, or unsafe. Or for others who find therapy helpful but need more structure and guidance outside of sessions. Haunting explores many different ways to help your brain and your body, explains the science and psychology behind its advice in cited research, and never breaks character as a helpful old man giving advice on ghosts
It is geared entirely around building self-efficacy, building resilience, and achieving post-traumatic growth
The funding goal is $3500. This original goal funds for consultant Hayley Twyman Brack, a therapist and avid gamer, to go over the game and make sure everything is cited from the latest peer-reviewed research, and make sure all the psychology advice is up to date on the latest therapeutic practices
I am pulling the knowledge in this game both from my own recovery journey, and my last two years as a social worker working with a large variety of clients with disability and mental health challenges
If we can reach a little further than our original goal, the game will be fully illustrated by wonderful artist Vicky @prose-n-scripts
Please check out the Kickstarter page to learn more and spread the word to anyone who may be interested! I believe in the power of the TTRPG community to make this happen! Thank you everyone!!

Newcomer
In my language learning journey, which started with French long ago, I've found myself, like many others, being drawn to learning through gamification. People love Duolingo for this reason and I've used it for years myself. I did some reading up on it though and decided to try Babbel this time around.
ANYWAY, in my information superhighway travels, I came across Newcomer! It's an RPG that has translation and vocab building aspects. It unlocks words and phrases as you level up. You have a phrasebook for quick reference and a whole host of questions and statements to click through to interact with the NPCs. It's not like "game of the year" but it is entertaining enough to hold my attention. I don't even typically like RPGs so...give it a shot. It's $10 on Steam.
Bravo.

My Gamified Life Framework
So below the cut is the general framework I followed to gamify my life that's been working (for the most part).
I hope to have my own system with (some of) its details up in the next few days as an example.
Please let me know if y'all need any kinda clarification or have any questions about the system - I'd be happy to share more!
Phase One - Assessment
1. Look over your current life and decide how/what you want to improve upon using this system - it could be large swaths of your life or smaller, more targeted areas.
2. Look at your overall life and divide it into general areas (I call them domains) and those general areas into sub-areas if needed (I call them sub-domains). Ex. Household into Chores and Maintenance. Household is the main life area, while Chores and Maintenance are the sub-areas.
3. Dream big about where you want to be and who you want to be in the future. This is a huge brainstorm of everything you can think of. It doesn't matter how large or how small.
4. Honestly decide how happy or fulfilled you are in each of your listed life areas (and sub-areas) using a list of your own objectives/questions specific to your end goals and ideal self. Ex. Finances - "I successfully budget my money" with a score of 4/10
Phase Two - Planning Systems
1. Look at your ideal future self and create a general plan/goals and list of milestones for a journey to get there.
2. Sort goals and milestones into life areas and sub-areas, along with prioritizing (or ordering) each of them.
3. For each life area (and sub-area), create or form Quests in the form of goals to advance yourself - the focus life areas are the larger goals and called Main Quests, the non-focus areas don't each need a goal, but if they do they're smaller and maybe more project focused and are called Side Quests.
4. Break down each of your brainstormed Main and Side Quests into actionable steps, projects, and/or milestones to take those bigger goals into manageable chunks.
5. Using the manageable chunks, break them down into XP values, gold rewards, and pick deadlines.
6. Create habits to surround and encourage your progress.
7. *Optional* Create a “shop” to give yourself rewards as you gain XP and Gold - as well as giving yourself breaks when needed.
8. Create a list of “Mandatory” tasks to be done every day - things that should be part of your routine already and need to be done daily. *Optional* Make each mandatory daily task worth 1 point, then multiply that by 2 weeks (14 days). That’s how much HP you should have for the month. Each month it resets to full HP.
9. *Optional* Plan for what happens if a “Player Death” occurs. Ex. For me it’s a shop close for 3 days and losing a randomized amount of loot and gold (decided by my husband).
Phase Three - Action
1. For each quarter or season, pick no more than 3 domains (maybe 4, depending) to focus on and advance the most.
2. Keep track of your HP and XP daily and your Gold weekly - however it works best for you.
3. Tweak your systems and assessments, and therefore your goals, as needed to get the best system for you. Originally, I didn’t have a gold/shop and an HP/”Player Death” system set up, but when I realized I needed a more immediate reward and punishment system they got added.
Notes
○ Always take what works for you and leave what doesn't - don't try to force things that don't work for you!
○ If this is popular, I can also create a pdf/document to share as well!

"I was index worthy!" I don't know why this meant so much. I mean, I was shocked that something I said ended up in the book at all, but for enough words to have made it in for me to be mentioned on multiple pages. Gobsmacked!
Failure may tell us that something went wrong and that we need to try something else, but Rob Hatch, a long-time business coach, explores using our past successes to help us with the how to move forward part. We often already have the answer to what will work, because we have done it before and just don't realize it.
If you want to check it out, here's a linky thing to take you there.

I gamify word counts.
Here, have my custom template that I actually use. Because gatekeeping resources is wack.
I sometimes write up to 4,000 words a day for my day job, and then I’ll sit down in the evening and write more.
I'm able to make this work (for me, just for me, most of the time) because I've discovered that I can trigger dopamine hits with visual cues like colors and a progress chart.
So I made this word count tracker.
It's nothing too fancy, but it's got pretty, live-updating colors, a chart that tracks my progress, I can set a goal if I have one. I keep one of these in almost every writing project folder.
It works really well for me, and it helps me when I'm feeling freaked out by a word count or a blank page.
Just Input your word count goal and your word count by day. That’s it. It’ll track your progress, color it in by weight (so satisfying), and you’ll see the graph get closer and closer to your goal.

🍀gamification🍀
using the process of gamification is something i discovered on this post and decided to implement it into my own life. i thought i'd make my own post to explain my personal system, since the original was a little bit confusing.
so, let's start with quests. there are 2 types of quests: main quests and daily quests, which i also call assignments. main quests last for a 'cycle' of 21 days (which is how long it takes to build a habit!). daily quests/assignments are in a to-do list format and build up to completing the main quest. each quest is related to a stat, which is developed by the completion of the main and daily quests. an example of this is my own quests and stats:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
btw i use notion to track this!
as such, i've got daily quests to help with this:
Tumblr media
i use the format of: task difficulty class (F is super easy and S onwards is super hard) the reward is in stat points (i'll go more into this later) there is also a punishment (which for me is not using any electronics) and a duration for it.
now for the stats! daily quests have stats in the same way main quests do, and doing each daily quest gives you daily quest stat points, depending on the difficulty of the task. you will need a separate tracker to track this:
Tumblr media
once you get to 10 daily quest stat points, that equals one main quest stat point. once you reach 10 main quest stat points, you can level up! any rank system can be used, i'm using F-S at the moment.
the damage section is for not completing an assignment: if you don't complete one, you take 1 damage point. the usual conversion is 10 daily stat points (dstp) = 1 main stat point (mstp), but if you get a damage point you have to get 11 dstps to get 1 mstp. to get rid of emotional damage points, you need to complete your daily quests and get it back to 0. this can't go into the negatives!
not completing any of the main quests in the 21 day cycle causes you to lose a point for the corresponding stat, meaning you can't rank up.
lastly, the punishment.
if i don't complete at least 5/6 quests, i set myself a punishment. i haven't come up with one yet, but the post i referenced uses 150 burpees as their punishment, something you don't want to do and strains you. make sure the punishment isn't too severe, take care of your health first!
and yeah, that's it! i've been using this system for a few days now, and i think it works similarly to duolingo's streak in motivating me to do things, and the best part is, it's completely customisable. you can do anything you want with it.
bye, i have to go work on my daily quests :)

Do you guys know the self-care / mental health app "Finch"?
(not getting paid lol :/ just a rec)
It's a cute gamification of to-do lists but also tracks your mood, analyses your personality traits and gives you mental health tips. (free to use but also has more with premium). Especially when you sign in with bad mood it gives you "emergency help" right at the start, a list of mental exercises and breathing techniques, anxiety relieve, help hotlines or a note pad to vent or reflect in. Also has little physical exercises. That's neat.
You get a little bird you have to raise and give energy every day by doing your goals. You also educate it by answering its questions about things it discovers on it's walks. (that's your personality analysis part). With the points you earn you can buy clothes and furniture for the bird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just found it recently when I was looking for a new gamification to-do list. And I like it so far.
Before I used Habitica for years. I still have an account there. That's more like a text based RPG, where you go into quests and your solved tasks give attack or defense points to your character in the battle.
Tumblr media
I do like it's interface better, it's easier to put up to-do lists and give them different values (I miss that with Finch) BUT since it's RPG based you mainly just develop your character and find new items during quests when you are in a party and battle in multiplayer. Which is a passive process, you just need to join and sign up for quests. Based on your finished daily tasks and goals you fight against monsters with the group. But it kinda sucks when you fail your tasks and then the whole group gets hit because of you. The group I was in, was super chill and didn't bother you much with chatting just told you when it was your turn to open a quest (basically a group for introverts lol). But it fell apart few months ago and got a new leader who is more talkative. Which can be fine if you are into that. The group/party chat also serves as a place to find motivation or talk about problems with others. Bet you can even find groups for specific projects and interests. But I just use apps a few minutes per day to check my boxes, so I don't talk much with them. Since I don't have big to-dos anyway atm I left the party for now.
So yea... I use Finch for now as a test how it's going and to remind myself to drink enough water and do some easy daily tasks 😅
