Some of the songs you use to get into Edwin's character are quite emotional. Given his inner turmoil throughout Season 1 and that he's so reserved, was it challenging to balance how much emotion to show when playing him?

After the Devlin House Crystal is dogged in trying to help Charles process but Edwin only comments offhandedly. Is he giving Charles space or not seeing how traumatic it was for him or is he unsure how to approach him?

time to appreciate the hell out of George Rexstrew for Cast Appreciation Week through these gifs

Every single one of the gifs up there shows a tiny fraction of the genius of George's performance. In every scene, every movement, every small gesture and expression we can see how much George loves playing Edwin and that he gave everything to this role and more. George captured Edwin's curiosity and confidence, his strength and vulnerability, his sassiness and his insecurities, but most importantly his incredible kindness. I first fell in love with this show because I fell in love with Edwin. He felt incredibly real to me from the beginning, and I felt for him and with him through his entire journey. There's no one else, no one else who could have been our Edwin Payne.

I also want to give a shout out to gameo week, and what an absolute highlight that was for me within this fandom. George managed to raise over £10.000 for a cause close to his heart, and the fact that it was so successful makes me so incredibly happy! And just as a bonus we got to learn so much new stuff about the show, got the Edwin playlist, found out that ghosts can feel each other, and learned the backstories to all the agency's past cases! Every single video was such a joy and I appreciate George so much for taking everyone's requests and questions so seriously and giving so much of his time for this. My favourite thing about gameo week though was that George got to feel the love from the fans for a week and we got the chance to tell him how much we appreciate him and the show. He got to see both how unhinged we are and how deeply we care about this wonderful show.

George Rexstrew, wherever you are, I hope you know how much we all appreciate you. Please look after yourself and know that we will all be there to cheer you on for whatever you do next.

My piece for the DBDA Cast Appreciation Week, Day 1, George Day.

I have so much appreciation for George. He’s an absolutely fantastic actor, he literally disappears into Edwin when he’s portraying him.

I’ve watched interviews and cameos with him and he’s a completely different person. That’s not something all actors are capable of.

Where you can look at two pictures of the same person, but they’re different people. “That’s a picture of Edwin, and that’s George.”

His “We didn’t matter” speech absolutely blew me away. It hit me like a punch right to the gut. You can tell how much work and heart he put into this role, and he portrayed Edwin with such grace and confidence.

Lastly, Gameo week, as the fandom has dubbed it lol. The fact that he took time out of his life to raise money for a good cause is beautiful.

Especially someone as private as he seems to be, answering questions and giving his fans a peek behind the curtain in order to help others. I truly hope I get to see him in more roles soon.

I’d love for him to be able to continue playing Edwin, but he deserves the world and I hope he gets it.

George: Hi Pip, it's George and Jayden here from the Dead Boy Detectives. It's lovely to hear from you, thank you so much for being a part of our little cameo week, or half week, we've absolutely loved it, getting to relive all things Dead Boy Detectives. Now, let's get into your request. You've said: "Jayden, when did Charles figure out mirrors could be used as windows?"

Jayden: Ooh well I always imagined that Edwin, obviously, Edwin has all these books of magic spells and I reckon from time to time Charles probably would have a little scroll through them himself, and I reckon that that was something he saw in one of those books and a spell that he really wanted to master as he obviously did want to go and check in on his mum. Um so yeah that is how I think he came to knowing how to do that. "George, what is the 'thing that is worse than a demon' Edwin was traded to in Hell?"

George: Great question. I probably could've had a more clear-cut answer when I filmed the scene a year and a half ago, but I imagine it was something, maybe like some evil of a non-physical form and I imagine it might have been some form of torture, so you know, like you see in, I can't remember which realm of Hell it is, but when the boys are running through the hotel, through Hell, and everyone's stuck, they're frozen... something of that ilk. It would have been a form of torture, like maybe in a room, kind of powered by a non-physical entity and I think that would have been a big struggle. Um you've said: "Please tell Jenn Lyon she is iconic. Esther is the best antagonist, so funny and scary." Listen, I tell Jenn, I speak to her a lot and I'm often telling her how much she is loved. So I will pass this on gladly, because it's true.

Jayden: And we agree.

George: We agree.

Jayden: Very, very much so. In episode 8, I was chained up to a kitchen cabinet, and in most cases that would've been awful, but the fact that it was Jenn Lyon aka Esther's cabinet, it made it a little bit easier. Listen, we love you Jenn, if you do ever watch this, but we also love you, Pip.

George: We love you, Pip.

Happy Cast Appreciation Week October 20, 2024

Dearest George,

First of all, let me start by saying that I cannot believe Edwin was your first on-screen performance: you are one of the most polished, dedicated, naturally gifted actors I've ever had the privilege of seeing on my TV screen. I was captivated by your performance from the moment you stepped on screen, and I think you could put some "Big-name" actors in the industry to shame. The love you have for Edwin, and the work you put into portraying him, is evident. Also, you have one of the most soothing voices in the whole world, btw - I don’t know if anyone has ever told you that, but your voice is absolutely lovely.

I've rewatched Dead Boy Detectives more times than I can count now, and your portrayal of Edwin's journey of self-discovery, and his journey with accepting not only his sexuality but also being in love with his best friend, is reverent and breathtaking...it moves me every single time. Edwin's story is one I related to on a personal level and I imagine I'm far from the only queer person who can say that (falling in love with your best friend kind of feels like a right of passage). The way you handled such a sensitive, poignant part of Edwin's story cannot be overlooked or understated, and so many queer kids have seen your performance as Edwin and feel braver now as a result. I hope you are immensely proud of all you've given the LGBTQ+ community so far.

Lines like "If you punish yourself, everywhere becomes Hell," "Bad guys do not worry about being bad guys... I dare say we all worry about who we are, deep down," and "It's not what you did, it's what you do" live within me forever, and it's your voice I hear when the reminders are needed. I will never be able to put into words, as a Charles-adjacent-spirit, how much your portrayal of Edwin felt healing to me. The voice in my head is not always kind, but now there's another voice there from time to time which is far kinder so thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart.

I hope you know how loved and appreciated you are by this fandom not just today, but every day. I hope our words and our continued fight will remind you that you've had such a significant impact on so many people and that you are adored and appreciated. Your sheer presence has brought immense joy to us; "Gameo" week alone was one of the highlight experiences of being a Dead Boy Detectives fan, and that's due to your kind, generous heart and the amount of work you put into those Cameos. Your authenticity, passion, heart, wit, dedication, and incredible sense of humor are all things I admire about you, and I feel thankful to be one of your many fans.

I wish I had Edwin, and Dead Boy Detectives as a whole when I was a queer kid figuring my shit out, but I'm tremendously glad the world has both of them now. Thank you for everything you've given us, and thank you for being you.

Let's try this ask gameo then - ok sooo, as fun and as nice as gay-panic-Amity was in WiLW, it was a weird jump from the previous episode, where it seemed like she was able to keep her cool around Luz- she seemed like a different character at times, as cool as it was that Disney allowed them to be so obvious with the crush. I like gay panic Amity, so I don't complain, but I find it weird

I totally see why you say that, there WAS quite a difference in Amity’s behavior between Grom and WILW. However, if I had a secret crush on someone, we had a big romantic dance number, and then we were crowned prom royalty, I would absolutely be a mess the next day, maybe the whole next week or month. I can totally see how Grom would render Amity unable to be smooth around Luz ever again. It’s probably what would have happened to me if I had been in this situation.

[Week 7] - BG Text work

The text movement mentioned earlier, I have been looking for textbooks in the forum, and I found the textbook. First I created the Manager, added the Kinect Manager code and the Game Manager code to the Inspector, and selected the foreground image in the Move Obj of GM. 

 Create the BG Removal Manager code in GameO. And the adjustment value is -1.

Successfully completed this series of operations and tested successfully (video: text move)

This one was about Edwin’s clothes, and if he’d ever change them or if there were any clothes George would want Edwin to try. Which George says Edwin and Charles swapping clothes would be fun. And I agree!"

Starts with a Scottish accent, which George seems to be dipping into more and more as the week progresses, and a lot of popping noises as he thinks. :)

I wanted to ask about Edwin and changing clothes. He changed his clothes a bit in one episode but do you think there are other moments when Edwin might change his clothes? Do you think Edwin would try new outfits now that he's figuring himself out more? And what kind of clothes would you like to see Edwin try?

Sometimes I think about how much the Netflix execs must have been shitting themselves during Gameo week and I just... I JUST.

Like, imagine that you've decided to pull the plug on a show. A week later, the show's lead actor, a universally beloved human being, announces that he is running a CHARITY DRIVE and answering fan questions. You have already let him read the season 2 script; you have let him think you're renewing it.

You're in fucking DEEP.

You now have 3 options. Option 1 is tell the actor that he can't do what he wants with his personal time. Option 2 is try to claim charity is bad. Option 3 is pull the plug now and let both the questions and the answers morph into really terrible press.

All three are not viable options, so you just let it go on. You watch everyone get MORE attached to the actor than they already were. He raises $2000+. By the time you cancel it, things are way, way, way worse for you

Reasons George Rexstrew is an Absolutely Amazing Actor and Human: DBDA Cast Appreciation Week

He did a lot of independent research on the Edwardian era to ensure that his portrayal of Edwin was authentic.

He took ballet lessons to get a feel for Edwin's graceful movements so that he could portray him as well as possible.

He chose Edwin's iconic outfit based on his Edwardian-era research in collaboration with the costumes department.

His facial expressions as Edwin are on point. Like, this man is so incredibly expressive and I love to see it.

The little movements that he does, the stims and the adjustments and the posture, all served as excellent unscripted character building. He clearly put a lot into this.

He, along with Jayden, would correct little inconsistencies in the script and actions because of their knowledge on their characters. For example, they wanted them to trip over a stump in episode 6; George pointed out that they could just walk through it. The attention to detail is on point.

He was constantly thinking about and assessing Edwin's physical form in each scene, including his pain levels while in Esther's torture machine in episode 8.

That little tear during the love confession.

Edwin's more moderated screams while being tortured vs the bloodcurdling screams when Niko dies.

His sense of humour is absolutely iconic.

The way that he picks on Jayden in cast interviews is so adorable and funny. Clearly a very strong bond there.

He gave a long-form interview with In Creative Company and offered up so much insight into Edwin and his performance. That was 100% on him, Netflix had nothing to do with it.

He was so insanely generous with his time during Gameo week and made people videos between 2-6 minutes. Most celebrities only give people like 30 seconds! But not him. He spent hours every day giving us thoughtful answers to questions.

We all love him so much that he raised well over $10,000 for charity!
