costume progress

I’m working on my one major cosplay for the year that has technically been in progress since last year and I’m so close lol. What’s left to do!

1. trim and style the wig base and extensions. I’m not a hairstylist so this won’t look the absolute best, but shouldn’t take too long, not more than 15 minutes.

2. make the prop/weapon out of like, cardboard and paint. This isn’t necessary if I’m going to be around other people since it’s cumbersome, but I feel awkward without a prop in regular at-home photos. This is a little complicated if I want to make it sturdy, a few hours at minimum not including dry time.

3. figure out shoe situation. This is the hardest part of the entire cosplay lol, and I still can’t figure out a good solution to make a reasonable semi-accurate copy. I’m looking into making it out of funfoam, I will not buy the “official” cosplay shoes online. But for walking around, I’m just wearing combat boots and they will be more than sufficient and also in character, so I won’t worry about it at all. For now...

4. bag prop. This is technically finished, but I might want to add the studs for accuracy and strengthen or stuff the inside for sturdiness, I’ll give myself 30 minutes at most to do this, only after the first 3 steps are done (addressed).

If I can get this cosplay 95% finished, I will finish the next cosplay for the next con which again, is stuck at the hardest parts and I’m too lazy to use math to figure it out. But I’m giving myself a hard deadline of convention dates, because I hate having the costume parts strewn about my office, it stresses me out to work in a mess and everything is gathering dust and most importantly, I would look sooooooo cute in the finished costume and I need people to tell me I’m cute. I have to finish these 2 costumes this summer, so help me. If you catch me doing anything else until I post photos of me looking cute, please feel free to yell at me.

Today Dusty made this top hat 🎩 #steampunk he was inspired from a book Colby bought a few years back he used #funfoam he used a glue gun, one of rooster feathers we found awhile back in the coop, black craft paint and gold paint watered down. He did all of this on his own I only gathered the supplies. He used some of Erin @erinkecksteampunkart gears she makes. #kidsmakingart #art

Mew Zakuro joins the team!

Details below

Base doll is Nefara, I figured the big sister body was perfect for Zakuro since she’s older and taller than the others. 

Her ears and tail are made the same way as Ichigo’s of working in layers of short wefts, but with different “cores”. The ears are pink craftfoam (funfoam?) and her tail is a string of thick yarn with a wire so it’s posable!

Shoes are also same method as Ichigo’s but again with different “core” since I didnt have any boots in big sister size. I took a pair of Nefara’s high heels with a spike heel (like Zakuro’s booth has), and cut out craftfoam in the shape of the rest of the boot. Since she’s a set character I just glued it right onto her legs, which meant I couldn’t glue the fabric on as seamlessly as Ichigo’s. 

Also finding her goddamn mark for her stomach was surprisingly difficult, no images or video was large or high quality enough to show it detailed, neither anime, manga nor promo pics showed it in detail. Finally a friend found a reference image, altho it was hard to paint it as accurate because how small it is.

What is your recommended product for sealing funfoam?

I use different things depending on the use/effect I’m going for!

For pieces that will be somewhat rigid or stationary, I use Sculpt Or Coat. I really like the finish this gives, and it adds a bit of durability to the foam, but it’s flexible enough not to crack on drying like wood glue or gesso.

For pieces that need a smooth or gloss coating while retaining a great deal of flexibility, I would suggest FlexBond. I previously wrote a detailed tutorial/demo on FlexBond; it can be found here.

For pieces that require a flexible matte finish, I use acrylic spray sealer. This is easy to apply, and you can use more or fewer coats to achieve the finish appropriate to your project.
