I’ve decided I’m going to save up to add a mirrorless Olympus camera + 60mm macro lens to my arsenal. My D850 does amazing macro but the Olympus is the king of super macro.
#in general it’s more about who is operating the camera than the camera itself#but macro photography -especially super macro photography - pushes the limits of what a camera can do#mirrorless but also not full frame will be interesting but that’s part of what makes it good for macro#maybe someday will look into a telephoto for it too lolol#it’s also remarkably affordable

Camera Gear for the Low-Spoons Photographer
YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, but I have rheumatoid arthritis, chronic vertigo, and a host of less-related autoimmune situationships that I've learned to work with and around over the years. When I first got my telephoto lens, holding the camera long enough to find and photograph owls would leave my hands swollen for hours. I do a lot better now.
A few notes: I'm leaving out my various lenses and filters and such, since those aren't directly related to coping with chronic pain. But if there's any interest, I can share those another time. + Nothing I recommend below is an affiliate link. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this is just me sharing hopefully helpful things.
And: some of this stuff is expensive. I've been accumulating gear for many years. Prioritize what you need most for health and joy, and build out your kit as you go along, upgrading down the line if needed.
under the cut: PERSONAL GEAR, CAMERA GEAR, BONUS GEAR
✱ PERSONAL GEAR
Compression gloves. The MVP of hanging on to a camera without swelling/pain. I don't find that I need gloves with grips, but you might prefer it.
Photography gloves. But if you're going out in really serious winter weather, you'll want glove liners or compression gloves + fold-back mittens, instead.
Wrist wraps (over the top of the compression gloves works great). I guess mine are discontinued, but for what its worth, this is what I use.
Rechargeable hand warmers. Again, mine doesn't seem to exist anymore, but this looks like its successor. Get one for each pocket unless you have...
A heated vest
And this goes without saying, but find really good boots that don't bother your ankles. These are my go-to; YMMV. (Pair them with really good socks.)
✱ CAMERA GEAR
Panasonic Lumix GH7. Micro four-thirds cameras and their lenses are smaller and lighter than full frame mirrorless/DSLRs, which is better for my RA needs. It's also less expensive.
But, note that I started out (post-film) with the Canon M-series, a smaller, more affordable option which you can still buy used. Great for beginners. (I'm not sure what Canon replaced the M50s with.)
Camera strap. Personally, I like a cross-body setup. It doesn't bother my collar bones as much, and doesn't bother my neck at all. You can get cheaper ones than mine. I use it often enough that I wanted to be as comfortable as possible, and I want to be able to quickly switch between a strap and a tripod (otherwise I don't use my tripod enough). I've given away a lot of bad camera straps, so I chose to upgrade.
Camera bag. I won't link to mine (though I love it), because it was wildly self-indulgent and I don't want to suggest you have to buy something expensive to make it work! For daily use, I use a medium-sized sling bag because I change lenses often, and this lets me swap without setting all of my gear down on the ground.
Camera backpack. If I'm going further afield, I'll switch to a backpack for shoulder pain, but I don't love mine for how inaccessible my gear is. I do have to set everything down with this one. I've been reliably recommended this bag, but I'm still looking for something that will fit my camera with the telephoto lens mounted. I'll let you know what I find!
Travel backpack. My collar bones get swollen and tender pretty easily, so for hiking I'll slide a camera cube into a proper backpack. This isn't my exact bag, but I think it's what replaced mine; my cube came with my camera backpack, but here's the kind of thing I mean. My smaller lenses fit (with soft cases) into the side pockets for easy access; you could use carabiners, but I don't prefer how insecure that feels.
(If I'm hiking, I've got walking sticks and knee compression sleeves, just for the record. In which case I tend not to also bring a tripod.)
Travel Tripod. Lightweight, super easy to use. Not heavy enough to withstand much wind, though.
Heavy Tripod. Harder to travel with, but worth it when conditions call for a more heavy-duty tripod, or one with a ball head (for better camera maneuverability). I keep mine in my coat closet for the owls. My travel tripod lives in the trunk of my car.
✱ BONUS GEAR: drones x accessibility
I really do recommend that if you have certain kinds of mobility or health issues, you consider getting a small drone (sUAV). I have a DJI Air 2S (which is being replaced by the 3S) which fits into a neat little pack for easy carrying. And to support this recommendation, a story:
For our honeymoon, my spouse and I roadtripped to the Spiral Jetty at the Great Salt Lake (en route to the 2017 solar eclipse). It was August. It was hot. And my joints were bent out of shape from coming down from a week in Tahoe, and I have history of seizures which can be triggered by heat, and as we walked further and further out I started feeling quite ill.
Since I did not want to have a Problem out there in the middle of nowhere, I walked back up to the parking lot and launched my small, quiet, unobtrusive DJI Spark from the tailgate of my car. I am one of those photographers who is very self-conscious about flying around people who may be bothered by it, which is why I'm clarifying small and quiet. There were very few people anyway, but at elevation, no one even knew it was there.

(The person in the center of the spiral is my spouse!)
Of course, if you're a National Parks nerd, you know that you can't fly in the parks. But, as with the Spiral Jetty, there are many beautiful places you can still go. And if you get out there and can't go very far, or you're just having a bad day, with a drone you still have options. And that means so much to me that my company is trying to form a nonprofit to help people like me get set up with non-commercial sUAVs. We'll see where that goes.

Don't worry, you don't have to hold the controller aloft like this. I was still setting up, didn't know I was being photographed.
These were taken a million years ago with an old, now-discontinued drone that only shot in JPG, because of how small it was. I've flown FPV drones since then, which does tend to trigger my vertigo, but I can see the incredible possibilities for being able to experience a place you can't physically get to, or only in limited ways -- because you could at least have these immersive goggles and a small aircraft to get you there. You know? It's not nothing. (But, of course, it's not for everyone.)
That's it! As always, feel free to drop a note in my ask box. And if anyone is interested in my editing gear, I can make a separate post for that, too. ✌

Happy Star and Exclamation Mark are smooching behind the scenes.
Now, you may be thinking something along the lines of "TheFourFan on Tumblr.com, what the fuck.", which I don't blame you for thinking, without context, I too would assume this was some sort of joke. But I must inform you all of the things I witnessed Sunday evening at 8:24 P.M.
Let me set the scene for a moment: I was relaxing in my room, watching Happy Star's Guide to Object Shows on my phone and Animatic Battle on my Kindle Fire at the exact same time because I'm chronically online and have an extreme addiction to object shows. I had been doing that for the past 13 hours, just mindlessly consuming as much OSC content as one human could ever possibly conceive to satiate my burning passion for object shows.
However, my OSC watching streak was abruptly broken when Happy Star and Exclamation Mark leaped out of both of my screens and began to passionately make out right then and there on my carpeted floors, directly in front of me and my Four, X, Paintbrush, and Airy plushies. It was incredibly sloppy and I'm 99% sure there was some crazy tongue action going on. They were so gay that my room became instantly tinted with the colors of the gay flag. They were so gay that the massive rainbow pride flag hanging on my wall immediately became a straight flag, as Happy Star and Exclamation Mark had completely absorbed all the gayness out of it during their homosexual make out session. They were so gay that homophobia went extinct.
I pulled out my Panasonic Lumix S5M2X Full Frame Mirrorless Camera with 20-60mm Lens Demo and recorded their make out session as proof that my crosship was actually canon and I wasn't crazy. The footage was 2 hours, 56 minutes, 18 seconds, and 55 milliseconds long. I was about to upload the video to Tumblr but then the camera INSTANTLY exploded, killing everyone on planet Earth. I'm currently writing this in the hfjONE waiting room as we speak.
I swear this all happened guys trust me bro

The funniest thing for me personally, coming out of all the James Somerton shit, is the camera choises that he made. I've seen a couple of his more recent videos, there is nothing there that requires spending more than a couple of grand max on a complete camera rig. If what you do is sit in front of a stationary background in controlled lighting and talk at the camera, you can make that work with fucking 8-bit footage (I wouldn't for the sake of flexibility, but it's very doable), keeping in mind it's gonna compress down to a garbage-fire bitrate for streaming. And you go from a Ursa Mini Pro G2 to an FX6? When you're supposedly running out of money? Everything about an FX6 is more money. You need FF glass, you probably want AF lenses, probably mirrorless ones too (no sigma 18-35 1.8 for full frame), and for what, slightly better low light performance (not an issue on a professional set, most cine cams shoot at low EI values) and AF, which again isn't an issue shooting with cine lenses because they don't have fucking AF motors. "I wAnT tO sHoOt AnAmOrPhIc" buy a flare filter and crop your footage and spend the money you saved hiring people to do what actually needs to be done to make a good film, which doesn't involve blowing your budget on camera gear.

New camera arrived today. It’s midterms week, but I made sure to carve out the space for me to play with it a little, because I knew my focus would be shot once it arrived. It’s fun, feels eons more developed technologically from my other camera, I still feel a pit in my stomach from spending that sort of money, let alone on myself (even though it is the absolute cheapest full-frame mirrorless body you can get, and I got it refurbished, and I got it on a sale. Can’t kill money anxiety entirely). Was supposed to go to campus today but class got cancelled. Everything just feels slightly to the left of where reality should be sitting, and I can’t seem to get less uncomfortable with that
#one of those days where everything feels wrong and unreal but like nothing’s even happening#but it still feels like everything is fake around me or maybe i’m the fake one#idk. this went somewhere i guess probably delete later#z rambles

Art doesn’t require the best equipment, I know… and many wonderful artists start with nothing. I was lucky to find a beautiful, video-capable camera to expand on and play with my pre-existing understanding of photo and video arts.
I love Nikii. She’s a beautiful camera with such potential I could only ever dream of fully harnessing.
I always imagined a Sony for me… and Sony’s E mount system does fill me with envy at times. This Z6ii is a full-frame goddess equipped with everything I could ever hope for to taste the mirrorless world from my prior film and consumer digital camera experience.
Besides, the Z system has lenses hailed as the most crisp and beautiful glass on the market.
…also, yes… I will be buying a cropped sensor Sony for everyday experimentation with much cheaper lenses. The Sony a1 line and FX line are my dream cams after all… full-frame anyway.
We won’t talk about medium format today.
This return to form required letting go of other people’s expectations, imposed values and even getting rid of some unwanted things I let people convince me to invest in; a drum kit for one. My only comfortable instruments were always my voice, my heart, a pencil, qwerty keyboard and a camera… so I now have mics and cameras with pencils and qwerty keyboards as support.
It sucks to lose your heart in self-sacrifice believing it’s for a common community goal.
Now, with therapy and introspection I find again my roots of self-expression. Nikii sets that beautiful road before me and I’m forever grateful for her presence in my life. Promise I’ll focus on a Z8 line upgrade before I cheat with Sony.
Okay… well maybe I’m polycamera-ous.
