im always going to be an advocate for children's rights because 19 out of 50 states in the us allow corporal punishment in public schools and the only 2 states have banned corporal punishment in private schools. more fucking so, corporal punishments are levered disproportionately onto children who are black, disabled, or a boy. [NIH] if that doesn't make you fucking shake and want to scream then what the fuck are you doing

soo im abt to have a major surgery and you want to know what im nervous about? guess.

am i nervous that something will go wrong? am i nervous that ill get an infection? nope!

im nervous that i will fall behind in school BECAUSE I WILL BE RECOVERING.

like i shouldn't have to worry about thsi, i should be assured that my grades will be fine even while at home recovering doing as much work as i can. but no, im terrified that when i get back ill have all F's. especially since i wont be at school for finals. like thats so bullshit.

Bare minimum accommodation for my homeschooling and thought 'wow, I'm really giving them hell' but then I thought about it more and realized 'wow, I'm not giving them hell at all. “oh I never learned about colonialism and racism :( american education system bad :( I’m so helpless” read James Loewen. please read anything by James Loewen. especially Lies My Teacher Told Me. it is literally about the fallacies promoted by American history textbooks and gives you lots of things to do more research into. there is an easier to read edition (young readers’ edition, but anyone can read it! the intro is very clear about that!). there are audiobooks. there are pdfs. you can get his books from the library probably, Lies especially is widely circulated!

Loewen is far from the only author to write about this. but he is an excellent starting point and is specifically writing for people wanting to learn about history beyond what textbooks teach.

I'm currently researching the 20th century education system in New Orleans (reading "Becoming American in Creole New Orleans" for anyone whose interested) and here's a little segment I came across:

"As Upton Sinclair observed in The Goslings: A Study of American Schools, it “is the thesis of the businessmen who run our educational system that the schools are factories, and the children are raw material, to be turned out thoroughly standardized, of the same size and shapes, like biscuits or sausages."
