In first season, when Luke beat up JJ after he'd just gotten out of jail, the first thing Pope did was hug him, apologize, and make sure he was okay (which he wasn't, and Pope didn't let JJ normalize it). What did John B do when he saw JJ? He talked about the gold, asked what he told the sheriff, and called JJ a coward for wanting to leave.
