White explains, this means “you’re spending so much time with Carmy outside of the kitchen, which feels like a different person, and feels like a person that Carmy is not even really familiar with.” So much of his identity has been tied up in his work “that in everything else, he’s kind of like a baby.”
I can’t wait to see baby Carmy navigate life outside the kitchen.

Thought I'd post about some of the films I watched at the Mumbai Film Festival last year! (Yes, three of these are black-and-white, sue me)
Which Colour?
Tumblr media
dir. Shahrukhkhan Chavada
Chronicling 24 hours in the life of a Gujarati Muslim family, I really enjoyed its greyscale panorama of life experiences across ages. There's a little more to it, but I don't want to spoil what that is.
I was particularly enamoured by the scenes of children roleplaying, as well as the point-and-click adventure game style shots. Just such a solid debut film weaving through poverty, desire, pride, and familial love.
The Battle
Tumblr media
dir. Vera Egito
A series of long takes following various characters entangled in a soon-to-be-violent student agitation against right-wing fascist forces.
This was my favourite film of the festival, and I had the honour of telling the director that as I shook her hand after the screening. It's raw, has excellent camerawork, and the tension of the film's narrative left me spellbound and breathless.
Perfect Days
Tumblr media
dir. Wim Wenders
The very tranquil days of a Tokyo public toilet cleaner, who is living his best life by simply relishing the mundaneness of life. More turbulent lives weave in and out of his life, leaving both parties changed.
This film grew on me massively as I spent days thinking about it, and now I'm convinced it's one of the most classic films I've seen. It's beautifully shot, meditative, and even inspiring in a very quiet kind of way. Just go in with some patience.
Fremont
Tumblr media
dir. Babak Jalali
An ex-translator Afghan immigrant to the USA fights boredom and stagnancy as searches for work and love in her new life.
It's got an unforgettable main character and dry humour a plenty, leaving me so engrossed that I wish this film was twice as long as it was. Just a really sweet, informed, and humanistic.

First look at Fremont
A new trailer has been released for Fremont. No release date was specified.
Each morning Donya (Anaita Wali Zada) leaves her tight-knit community of Afghan immigrants in Fremont, California. She crosses the Bay to work at a family-run fortune cookie factory in San Francisco. Donya drifts through her routine, struggling to connect with the culture and people of her new, unfamiliar surroundings while processing complicated feelings about her past as a translator for the U.S. government in Afghanistan. Unable to sleep, she finagles her way into a regular slot with a therapist (Gregg Turkington) who grasps for prospective role models. When an unexpected promotion at work thrusts Donya into the position to write her own story, she communicates her loneliness and longing through a concise medium: the fortunes inside each cookie. Donya’s koans travel, making a humble social impact and expanding her world far beyond Fremont and her turbulent past, including an encounter with a quiet auto mechanic (Jeremy Allen White) who could stand to see his own world expanded.

Fremont (2023)
Check out my review of the quiet and contemplative exploration of the immigrant experience in FREMONT (2023).
Babak Jalali’s Fremont is a slow burn character study that lingers on the quiet struggles of Donya (Anaita Wali Zada), an Afghan immigrant trying to piece her life back together in California. Donya, a former translator for the U.S. military, now toils away writing cryptic messages for a Chinese fortune cookie factory. The film follows her introspective journey as she grapples with displacement,…
