🔎Scam Exam(ination)🔍
Seen as: You should DM me / Message me Scam Type: Free Money Scam
As the saying goes, nothing good is ever free.
Everything has a cost, and if you fall for a scam like this?
You may find yourself losing far more than you wanted to gain...
-----
How it starts:
The way this scam starts is simple. You receive a comment on a post, a direct message, or an ask from someone you don't know asking you to message them. Yes, it's that simple on the outside. But this scam can also come with ✨extras✨ in an attempt to entice you as you'll see below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may even receive something akin to this message:
If $1,500 was deposited in your what will you use it for, be honest. Send your <payment> tag.
Which, if you've heard about that type of scam before, you'll know that it circulates on social media platforms like facebook, instagram, discord, and tiktok.
This scam on tumblr is pretty much the same thing.
-----
🚩Red Flags🚩
The account isn't older than a day or a week at best. (You can check this by viewing blogname.tumblr.com/archive.)
The account has no posts, is 'blank' or has obv stolen pictures. (blank = no avatar/header)
The account openly says something like this:
Tumblr media
-----
First contact:
If you contact these individuals, several things may happen.
1- You may be asked to be their 'sugar baby' or they will claim to be a 'sugar mommy/daddy'. They will say they will give you a weekly allowance, free gifts, or even promise you funding for trips just for talking and spending time with them. They may also offer to pay your bills and take care of you if you are someone who has posted about financial troubles.
2- You may be told that the person contacting you is just a wealthy individual simply looking to 'give people money' out of the goodness of their hearts and they want absolutely nothing in return. Or that they won the lottery and have too much and that they're just ✨giving it away✨.
But, sadly, they do want something from you.
The catch:
Where the scammers get you with this scam is that they usually tell you that they need some sort of 'favor' from you before you receive your first official gift or payment from them.
Remember: this is meant to be free money. So why would you need to give them anything, right?
1- These scammers may request you pay a 'small fee' to cover things like shipping costs of a fake check (ftc.gov) or item they want to send you. This would require you giving them your bank information which you (for obvious reasons) should not do under any circumstance.
2- They may ask for your PayPal, Cash App, or Venmo, and upon you sending it to them, they will doctor up a fake screenshot that shows that they sent you a payment and/or that something 'went wrong'.
In reality: they did not send you anything.
From here these scammers will then ask you to send money to their preferred address to 'verify' the transaction or 'unlock' the account. (which.. isn't how it works, by the way.) And upon receiving your $20-$50+, they take your money, block you, and leave.
3- This is the most annoying one of all. They start hyping up how they made all of this glorious and wonderful money, and they ask you to go to a website and invest in it with Crypto.
From here it is an obvious Crypto investment scam. And any website they send you to will either a) phish you, or b) it is fake and they will manipulate it to manipulate -you-. You'll think you're making money, and you'll invest more and more, and then when they have thousands of dollars, they'll steal it from you.
Here is a video from the YouTuber/Twitch streamer Kitboga where he talks about how these websites and this scam works in detail and shows you how he dove into this scam head first with recorded calls with these scammers. And trust me, they are very convincing.
----
Final thoughts: If you're someone who needs money, be it for medical reasons or something personal, getting messages like this can be really dangerous. 'Free' isn't 'free' especially in the case of free offers on the internet. There will always be a catch one way or another.
Always trust your gut and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Also remember to report messages like these when you receive them so that tumblr can look into it.
Stay safe everyone. :)

If an account you've never interacted with that has a description asking for money follows you, it is a scam.
I don't care how many photos whose source you have no way of verifying it posts. I don't care how many videos with no way of verifying their location, time of recording, or any other context they try to shove in your face. These are scams; all of them. In fact, there's a good chance that any money they get will be used to actively increase the amount of suffering caused by war, given how many scam operations these days are run out of Russia and supported by the Russian government. These are not people-these are bots. If you wouldn't give money to a blog claiming to be a hot single lady who just wants to get to know you after choosing to follow you and you specifically on tumblr.com, don't give money to a blog claiming to be a Gazan in need of help who has chosen to seek this help by following you specifically on tumblr.com, the most irrelevant social media platform this side of Threads that was sold at a billion-dollar loss because that's how few people are on here.

Zionist.
saying don't fall for scams does not make someone a zionist. tumblr asks are NOT actual calls for aid!
i was just going to delete this ask like i do all scam asks, but i figured id post it just in case other people are getting similar things for... not being gullible? for trying to stop other people from being scammed and sending their money to scammers instead of actual palestinians?
many people in palestine obviously need aid. an obvious bot sending thousands of messages to thousands of people asking for "aid" will not help those people. they aren't from actual victims. they're from random people who are weaponizing the kindness of strangers to make a buck. falling for it helps absolutely no one. critical thinking is even MORE important in a time like this, stop falling for this obvious shit! they're just like the ai porn bots. they're used by the same exact people for the same exact reasons, getting money off those who are gullible. they're scumbags who are weaponizing peoples empathy to make a buck off a genocide. stop. falling. for. it.
they're trying to take advantage of you. they're assuming you're too stupid to think critically about who you think you're helping. stop proving them right.
there are thousands of actual ways to donate to those in need that aren't tumblr ask scams!

So, which one is it? Are you Radyouthpeanut? Are you Massivepersonagardener? Are you Deafeningeagleland? Or are you Almostoptimisticsheep? Because apparently you’ve been doing this a LOT. I hope you understand what it is you’re doing. Attempting to gain money off of a genocide that is CURRENTLY HAPPENING is so morally fucking awful. I would tell you to go fuck yourself, but you aren’t worth the pleasure of that. You stand at the gallows and pocket coins from the purses of those trying to stop it. Stop trying to earn a quick buck off mass murder.

I can't find that master post of scammers pretending to be Palestinians with GoFundMes and I'm so paranoid I'll end up giving money to scammers when I can only afford to donate so much and want it to go to people who actually need it 😭 does anyone have that scammer callout post on tap?

not to be an ass but if you're giving so much to fundraisers spread around on tumblr dot com that you're out of money that is a you problem. most are asking for single digit donations or a share for other people to decide of they want to do the same. if they are a scam, make sure you lose money you can stand to lose, and if not, 100 people who can afford to donate $5 each will add up real quick for someone who needs it and will absolutely not be a waste to anybody anywhere. if you have time and energy to research multiple fundraisers yourself, awesome, and if you don't, $1 or $5 or $10 is not going to kill you, unless it is, in which case, you can simply not donate! nobody has a gun to your head. ultimately it is your decision and your judgement call if that's something you can afford to spend, scam or otherwise, vetted yourself or otherwise, as a grown ass adult with functioning free will. it is not that complicated, next question.

hi everyone! it appears this scam account is still going around, and i finally got one in my inbox lol.
here is a link to a post about this scam,
they are using the images and names of real Palestinians to extort money out of people. they go down the list of people who interact with and reblog trending posts regarding palestine and mass-send out a copy-pasted scam message claiming to be in Palestine.
Their accounts are created extremely recently. the blog who sent me this ask was created and had its first post on Monday (3/18/24) as of me writing this, this post is being written on Wednesday (3/20/24), and they spam-reblog trending posts in the free palestine tag to seem legitimate.
All of their information is taken from REAL Palestinian funds, REAL Palestinians who need help. This is honestly reprehensible. They have been at this since February.

How can I tell if messages from people claiming to be from Palestine are legit? I just got my fifth note in a short period of time from one and I feel bad for being suspicious of them, but I don’t want to unintentionally promote a scammer when I want to help people
It’s so stressful constantly getting asks from people I don’t know asking for money when I don’t even know if they’re legit and it’s hard to tell who is and isn’t legit, and when I view their profiles lots of people are asking the same thing or explicitly stating it’s unvetted.
I feel so bad for not posting the asks, but I don’t want to promote scammers when there’s actual real Palestinians who need the money
(Also, general question, how are the accounts finding all of the people they message? I find it kind of suspicious how many people they send asks to, especially since many accounts don’t post much or are generally inactive. Are they using bots to find accounts to message? I really, really hate to be doubtful due to how serious of a situation this is, but with how many people who have been proven to be scammers, I don’t want to risk it unless I know for sure a donation is vetted)
edit: please let me know if anything in this post comes across as offensive. I’m autistic and it can be hard to tell what is and isn’t acceptable to say. Please politely know of any issues so I can correct myself for future posts <3 thank you and please remember to take care of yourself and eachother!
