the kids online safety act passed the u.s. senate.
long story short (for anyone who hadn't heard of this before) the kids online safety act, aka kosa, is a bill that will censor online content and resources for lgbtq+ matters, reproductive healthcare, activism (INCLUDING PALESTINE AND LIKELY OTHER CRISES GOING ON LIKE IN CONGO OR SUDAN), mental health, etc. everywhere--its effects likely won't be contained to just america.
today, july 30th, 2024, the senate passed it 91-3. it has officially moved to the house of representatives.
is this a pretty massive setback? yes. do you have every right to be scared, sad, angry, or whatever else about this happening? absolutely. but should you give up hope completely? NO!
even though kosa passed the senate, the house is on break/august recess at the moment. we have around an entire month to get emails, calls, and faxes in to house reps, maybe more depending on when they decide to vote on it.
should it pass the house and get signed into law, we still have a whole 18 months before it actually goes into effect. this is plenty of time for digital rights orgs (e.g. fight for the future, the electronic frontier foundation) and other groups that oppose it to file a lawsuit against it. even if, worst-case scenario, it flies through the house immediately after the recess ends, we can still fight this up to march 2026.
so, yes, remember what's at stake here, but also remember that it's not over yet. we lost a battle, not the war.
below are some resources to learn more about kosa and how to contact your reps (first link) + a page that lets you directly contact progressive house reps, sign an open letter opposing the bill, and view others' testimonies against it (second link):
FIGHT. FIGHT. FIGHT.

Only a few minutes into Biden’s speech, several protesters interrupted, calling for a cease-fire in Israel’s U.S.-backed military operation in Gaza, which has killed more than 28,000 Palestinians and set off a maternal and reproductive health crisis. The president was interrupted over a dozen times as security struggled to wrangle protesters who were screaming “Genocide Joe!” and demanding a cease-fire. Hundreds of Biden supporters tried to drown out the protesters by clapping and chanting, “Four more years!” “Israel kills two mothers every hour in Gaza! Cease-fire now! End the genocide!” one protester yelled at Biden, who was standing on stage in front of a massive “Restore Roe” banner and flanked by supporters holding “Defend choice” signs. A video of the event shows Alexis McGill Johnson, the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, clad in her trademark hot-pink pantsuit, standing up and chanting “Four more years!” as security dragged the shouting protester out. It was a real-time illustration of the growing rift in the reproductive rights movement during an election year that will determine the future of reproductive health in the U.S.
Basic prenatal care, such as treating anemia, is nonexistent, causing more women to die during childbirth and more babies born prematurely, many of whom die without access to hospital incubators. Food shortages are leaving pregnant women, new mothers and newborns malnourished. And a lack of menstrual hygiene products has caused an increase in infections in women and girls. “No one is making the connection that there’s a huge repro genocide happening in Gaza that we are funding, and the big repro organizations that are endorsing him are pretending like it’s not happening,” one leader who has met with the Biden administration on abortion issues told HuffPost. Most of the workers who spoke with HuffPost asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation from their employers or others in the reproductive rights field.

Humanity is making progress on reproductive rights
"As the US Supreme Court prepares to hand down its latest batch of rulings, here is your periodic reminder that the United States is an outlier. Some 60 countries around the world have made their abortion laws more liberal in the past 30 years; only a small handful, which includes the United States, have made their abortion laws more restrictive. “A House panel advanced the Kids Online Safety Act bill, also known as KOSA, on Wednesday, pushing forward legislation intended to boost online privacy and safety for children.”
1) sign this petition and share it everywhere on social media @Twitter @Tiktok @Reddit https://www.youthagainstkosa.com/
2) call house leadership (see numbers here). This is a VERY important step. Again, use these call scripts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IyBUe6frFGF44rJQU3TahZ5zyG3tC7jai_hPneAKlnM/edit
3) Call the House Energy and Commerce Committee Here
There is a very big possibility this passes. We HAVE to put pressure on leadership and these politicians and show them this is a poision bill that WILL HARM children.

Remember to vote. Remember to have vote. Remember that today might not be the day we get the rights we pray for, but tomorrow could be. Remember that Kamala is against the genocide in Gaza, against the illegalization of marijuana, against overturning Roe v. Wade. Remember that Trump wants Israel to worsen their attacks on Gaza, worsen the genocide that he wants to ban gay marriage and make having a genderqueer presentation the equivalent of pornography. Remember that he wants to ban abortion countrywide. Remember that Kamala is the first step, and she's a big step. Remember that you're not alone in this, remember we're here together. We can hope together, and we can change our country together. Don't forget to vote. It will matter.

Some things to do if you live in the United States as a queer person or a woman:
Learn self defense. You don't know whether someone will harm you. The idea that someone might is not far-fetched.
Stock up on contraceptives. Shelf life of plan B is four years. See this list for information about condom shelf life. These may become banned.
Buy queer books. As many as you can afford, starting with trans books. These may be banned soon.
Stock up on HRT medication if possible. This will likely be quickly banned when Trump becomes president. HRT meds have a shelf life of 1-3 years depending on the kind; check on the container! Read about DIY HRT here.
Read about what Trump and his followers are planning to do about abortion and other reproductive healthcare (i.e. contraception, etc.).
Read about what Trump and his followers plan to do about trans healthcare and rights for same-sex couples (I say same-sex instead of same-gender because they don't care about gender).
Teach your children (if you have any), siblings, friends, family, and especially other queer people and other women around you.
If you are too afraid to remain in danger, register for a passport as soon and look into countries you could move to. Look at what you'll have to do for jobs, living, a visa, citizenship, etc.
You may want to stock up on educational materials about prejudice, slavery, Native people, and other materials that may be censored.
As a reminder: This won't necessarily become a necessity. But based on the many things Trump and his supporters have said about the issue mentioned within this list, these actions will, unfortunately, probably be needed. Don't avoid taking these actions until it's too late. Do these before it's too late. Start now.

So there's this person called @alaticba
He's pro-choice & made a claim that the SCOTUS recently ruled that performing abortions when the woman's life is in danger, is illegal. I asked him for a source.
First, he linked to the White House and Youtube videos (!), which is of course ridiculous since the government is pro-choice and you cannot expect any integrity from them. Youtube videos are also not a reliable source.
I asked for a direct link to the court decision & the judgements the judges had made. This is where it gets interesting. For some reason, he began to argue that saying "The court ruled that life-threat abortions should be illegal" is not a claim that he had made, and also proceeded to call me names. "Motherfucker", "Dense," and "Stupid" are some of them.
And now he's spamming my inbox & chat to say that he won't let me get away easily.
What's hilarious is that he STILL has not backed up his claim with proper evidence.

It’s always calling grown women “girls” until a 12 year old girl gets pregnant by rape or a 6 year old Palestinian girl is murdered. Now little girls are all “women”

If a woman walks into a feminist group and the focus is more on whether she has given up men or not rather than what the group can accomplish for women at the moment, that would seem to me like an ineffective feminist group focused less on female class solidarity and more on identity discourse and personal small-scale choices/actions. Keep in mind that I totally agree that individual action, like never dating men, is never wasted (in fact, it's something that men as a class are very afraid of) and women should be encouraged to stop dating men. But why is it the most important? Does the y chromosome in her vicinity impede her ability to organize a protest for abortion, or a pornography boycott campaign, or an abortion fund, or writing an email to her university about period equality for students and staff?
