“WHY ARE YOUR TAGS LIKE THAT?” OR: RED GUY DUCK AND YELLOW GUY ARE THE EGO SUPEREGO AND ID TO THE ENLIGHTENED MIND, A MASTERPOST
BASICALLY: the ego, superego, and id are freudian concepts of how the mind works in psychoanalytic theory. i match up the three protagonists of don’t hug me i’m scared with these concepts. here’s my insane person, long-winded explanation as to why.
THE EGO: rational, realistic, practical. the true self, the mediator between the other two. very concerned with self-preservation.
THE SUPEREGO: idealistic, critical, perfectionist. the judge, jury, and executioner.
THE ID: impulsive, childish, emotional. pure desire. associated with sexuality and romance.
the characters have been described by joe pelling as “the middleman” “cynical and fussy” and “optimistic and idiotic” respectively
RED GUY: is CONSTANTLY the mediator between yellow and duck. the only one seen in the “real world,” and the ego is the self presented to the outside world. the “worm in his brain” has to do with outward appearance.
DUCK: famously hostile and judgmental, constantly associated with the military (authority figures), even becomes a dictator in the scrapped pilot. his aggression is often targeted towards yellow, who he deems too emotional and sensitive and deserving of it the most. the “worm in his brain” has to do with morality.
YELLOW GUY: while he is often read as asexual and aromantic (which i agree with!), he has multiple “love interests,” even if none of them are played straight. his brain friends are all very emotional and have nothing resembling a voice of reason, and no way of handling warren (who can be interpreted as an intrusive thought) without enabling him. the “worm in his brain” has to do with relationships.
MISC DYNAMIC THOUGHTS: when yellow claims “grolton is the dog,” red corrects him gently and politely and duck swiftly shuts him down and tells him to shut up (there’s a lot of instances of red gently correcting yellow and duck doing it harshly, but to my memory this is the only time they do it with the exact same thing). during the friendship fight, red implies he’s told duck to stop being so harsh on yellow. duck has to intervene to remove warren (again, here a symbol of intrusive thoughts) as yellow is physically incapable of doing so on his own.
CLOSING THOUGHTS: do i think this theory is the key to understanding what dhmis is about? not at all! i personally believe that dhmis is just made for fun and with no deeper meaning than “becky and joe made something fun to make each other laugh.” do i as a psychology enthusiast think it’s an interesting way to interpret the text? yeah. my theory is flawed, for sure- yellow is concerned with keeping harmony and is usually nonviolent despite the id’s association with aggression, duck is the least likely to go along with the teachers (authority figures, when the superego gets its moral system directly from them), red often doesn’t care about the other two, among other things, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun for me to think about!
if you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading! feel free to ask any questions and i would be very happy to answer them, as i’m very passionate about this theory and love to discuss it. love you!

Schedule
Please note that some of these dates may be subject to small changes.
March 1st: Check-in 1 Writers: 25% of the final word count Artists: You have contacted your team members (or at least the writer!) and you are communicating. Beta Readers: You have been in contact with your writer to talk specifics. May 1st: Check-in 2 Writers: 50% of the final word count (Eligible for Early Bird Posting if at 75% - see below for details) Artists: You know what the writer is working on and you have an idea/ideas worked out for your art and you have started sketching (or other applicable pre-production process). (Eligible for Early Bird Posting if "solid progress" is made and you can be ready in a month!  Podficcers will have a more lenient time frame.) Beta Readers: If you have not been in contact with your writer, check in with them. If you and the writer are in agreement about how you’re going to work together, and it does not require you to be in active contact with them yet, this does not apply to you. For example: if you are helping with plot and outlining, you have already been doing that, but with SPAG you still have time to just chill depending on how fast you work Note that we will ask for proof of progress in this check-in! July 1st: Check-in 3 Writers: 75% of the final word count Artists: You have made solid progress and you are aware that you have a month left to do your part of the project. Beta Readers: You are aware that you have a month to do whatever you have agreed to do for your writer! (Check SPAG, cheerlead even harder for the final stretch etc.) Note that we will ask for proof of progress for this check in! We'll also start asking about when you can post - this will be filled out by one person, for the team. August 1st: Posting Begins! You are done! The fic is written and ready for the masses to read! The art is ready for displaying! Fics will not be posted all at once but for the duration of the entire month. Remember that these are more guidelines than actual rules! We trust that you know your own process best and can manage your time. In the case that time management is something you struggle with, make hitting the check-in goals your objective. Early Bird Posting If you meet the check in 3 bench marks at check in 2, your team is eligible for early bird posting.  If an author indicates on their check in form that they are at least 75% done, they will get the option to fill in the Early Bird Form -- here, you can indicate interest in posting in June or July, July, or August. June will only be available if a sufficient number of teams are ready on time!  We want at least one team posting per week until August. Once we get that info, we'll send out a questionaire to each team that expressed interest in early bird posting, asking about your availability to post, and based on that assign you a posting week. Authors will need to post at least their first 5K during that week, artists are encouraged to post when the relevant portion of the story goes up (eg if you have illustrated a specific scene, it will go up when the scene is posted. If you made a cover, it goes up when the fic first posts. etc.) Authors are expected to continue posting regularly until their fic is complete, and everything should be totally up and published by the end of august! Note that if you want to do this, it will require being on top of things and very communicative with your team! Regular Posting If you don't qualify for Early Bird Posting, we'll be sending out the same sort of questionnaire after the July check in. Everything is expected to be totally published and done by end of August!

Wild may be small compared to most the other mecha you’ll come across but she isn’t to be underestimated. A determined and stubborn femme who won’t take shit from anyone, a warrior spirit burning through and through. She may physically be cold but she’s one of the most caring and protective bots you’ll ever come across, ready to fight anyone who harms those she loves and she will not back down from a challenge. This is the medic you want treating your wounds and ailments whether it’s a simple infection or a lethal wound on the battlefield. You do not want to get on her bad side.
Wild was found outside of the Pits of Kaon as a newly emerged sparkling. Abandoned and left to die by her own creators it seemed like she was doomed from the start. Until she was found by a gladiator ; Lightning Strike.
Lightning Strike took her in, quickly learning of her outlying abilities and swore to raise her as his if she were his own. Wild thrived with Lightning Strike, although there was the constant fear about her outlying abilities being discovered and the implications that would have on Wild. To keep her safe Wild didn’t go to school, instead she was home schooled on Lightning’s down time from the Pits of Kaon and eventually when she was old enough Wild began to teach herself from the books Lighting acquired.
From a young age Wild was exposed to the fighting in the Pits, she didn’t mind and would always support and cheer on her adoptive Sire from the sidelines and the little femmeling was always eager to help patch up his wounds as if she was his own personal medic.
As Wild grew she got more curious and courageous and due to this she followed a young gladiator as he ran away after his first and only fight. This is where Wild met Paxafere; battered and bleeding hid away from everyone. Despite Paxafere’s best efforts in trying to scare her away Wild was determined to help patch the mecha’s wounds. It was this day that Wild made her first friend.
Throughout her youth, Wild stuck around with Paxafere, with Lightning Strike putting Wild through gladiatorial combat training, something Wild enjoyed and learnt quickly and it wasn’t long before Wild decided to become a gladiatrix when she was of age. However fighting wasn’t the only thing Wild did; on the sidelines Wild performed medical procedures building up her medical experience, this paired with the shanix earnt from pit fighting put her through medical school where she was reunited with Paxafere who was there training to be a nurse.
After graduating as a qualified doctor and surgeon Wild returned to the Pits of Kaon, resuming her medical work there until the devastating fight between Lightning Strike and Megatronus. It was that day Wild lost her ability of flight and her sire. Paxafere was there throughout her recovery, grieving alongside her. Wild knew she couldn’t stay in Kaon any longer and it was then that Paxafere convinced her to move to Iacon and open their own clinic.
Upon moving to the South of Iacon Wild and Paxafere got to work, purchasing a decrepit cold construct factory and completely gutted it, rebuilding it into a clinic of their own vision; The South Iacon Mercy Clinic. Once construction was complete Wild and Paxafere hired a team of medical staff; Charge, Flatline, Vitro, Clamp,  Brass, Bunsen and Triage. It was the group of them who worked day and night to provide care for the citizens of south Iacon.
Not long after the clinic was opened Wild met a friendly mecha; Ironhide and eventually after some encouragement the pair of them began courting.
When war broke out Wild and her clinic staff remained in Iacon, providing care to its citizens and even some soldiers discharged from the rages of the war. However this soon changed with the destruction and fall of Iacon. All but one of Wild’s staff survived. With the loss of Flatline the staff had no time to grieve and were relocated to a neutral zone called Uraya where they set up a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital ,or MASH unit for short, treating those injured from the war whether they were civilians or soldiers.
However they were betrayed by Flatline who aided the Decepticons in an ambush of Uraya. Upon the evacuation of the MASH unit Wild herself was captured by the Decepticons. WIld was taken prisoner and tortured ruthlessly. Her cooperation being bought with the lie of keeping her staff members safe and alive all while the Decepticon experimented on her and attempted to use her to create outliers of their own. This paired with the use of stasis she was constantly beaten down and broken. But when all hope seemed lost, rescue came, in the form of a bot she thought she would never see again. Ironhide
Unbeknowst to Wild. It’s been 5 million years and she’s no longer on Cybertron.

People never seem to want to hang out at animal habitats. If they can’t see something immediately, they just leave. If you’re patient enough to stay, sometimes incredibly magical experiences happen. Like this one.
Tumblr media
Those are California condors. Biggest wingspan in North America, incredibly endangered, and the only species with approval from USDA for emergency use of the poultry avian flu vaccine.
Towards the end of the day, once things got quiet, I sat down near where one was foraging and just hung out. Then… they noticed me.
I can only upload one video so I’m going with the one where I was showing them my glasses, since they kept trying to peck at my shoelaces and fingers and I wondered what else they'd be interested in.
They stayed there with me for at least five minutes, given the duration of video I took. Just chilling, watching me, interacting a little. It was just us - nobody else approached. Until eventually they chose to go do their own thing, and I sat there in awe for a while.

About and FAQ
What’s a Big Bang?
A Big Bang is a fandom event for creators to team up and work together on a set of creations! Each team traditionally consists of an author, a beta reader, and an artist, and the set of creations consists of a longer fic (10k words minimum), and artwork to go with it.
This Big Bang is for the MDZS and CQL fandom - all iterations of it, so novel, live action (The Untamed), donghua (q, too!), manhua, audio drama!
Works should be centred around at least one of the characters but no fics involving any of the actors that portray the characters.
There’s no age limit to get involved, however, all participants in teams creating works that are rated Mature or Explicit must be 18 or over. The discord server is also 18+.
For writers - besides the word count, there are no limits to your creativity! Go wild, write a fic where the characters are space octopi on the moon. All we ask is that you tag and warn appropriately, so that betas, artists, and eventually readers know what they’re getting into!
We ask that fics are posted to Archive Of Our Own, with credit and links to the artist and beta, and that works are rated and tagged according to their system. If you need any guidance on this, there’s a useful post here. We will be making an AO3 collection for this event closer to the time, and will make a post later as to how to add your fic to this collection.
For artists - again, there are no limits to your creativity! Art comes in many forms, whether it’s drawing, painting, a gifset, a sculpture, a song - whatever you want to do, tell your author, and go for it! And if you aren’t sure, just ask!
Art works can be posted either on Tumblr or AO3, and should credit and link the fic, author, and beta.
So, how does it work?
We will be running sign ups for people to get involved from 20th November to 7th January. (Find the full schedule here.)
All sign ups open simultaneously, but author sign ups close first. For the first check in, each author should submit a summary of their fic - including setting (Canon/Divergence/Post-Canon/Alternate Universe), rating, focus characters, pairings (if applicable), potential warnings and tags, approximate fic length and whether they’d like a beta reader.
These summaries will then be put into a document where artists and betas will be able to read and then submit a claim for the fic that they’d most like to work with. It’s completely anonymous up until the teams are formed - so writers please keep your ideas quiet until claims are done - and then when the teams are announced, authors should reach out to their team members and decide how they’re going to keep in contact. We recommend discord, and will be setting up a channel for each team if the members are part of our server.
Claims will not be first come first serve, so don’t worry if you’re not available exactly when claims open - you’ll have five days to have a read through the summaries and decide which fic you’d like. Depending on the amount of sign ups we get, it could take a little while for us to form the teams, so please do be patient with us in this time!
From there, creation begins! Keep in regular contact with your teams to discuss the art and fic that’s being created - it’s up to you how you go about it, but make sure everyone on your team knows where to find the fic, and keep each other up to date on your progress/keep your beta up to date on when you want them to check over the fic!
We’ll be running check-ins via email every month (see the schedule) to make sure everything is running smoothly, and answer any questions you might have. In April we’ll also be asking for a 50% draft, to make sure that everything is on track (we won’t be reading it, we just want to know that it’s there!) If any of these check ins aren’t responded to, we’ll try contact you and your team via a different method, but if we don’t hear anything, we’ll assume you’re dropping out.
Posting will happen in June. There’ll be a posting week (or two or three, depending on the amount of sign ups!) and each team will be given a set day to post both fic and art. Everything will be reblogged onto the mdzsbigbang tumblr so that everyone will see it!
FAQ
What’s a beta reader?
It’s like an editor, someone who can look over your work with a fresh set of eyes, check spelling and grammar, and anything else you want checking. They can even help you with your plot if you’re stuck!
What’s a pinch hitter?
Someone who steps in to fill in any gaps left after the teams are formed, e.g. if someone needs to drop out. We’ll run sign ups for these after claims.
What if I can’t finish/reach the word count?
Just let us know! Keep in contact with your team, and keep them updated as to how things are going. For artists and betas we will be trying to organise pinch hitters to step in so that a fic is not left artless or betaless, for authors, please get in touch with your team and ask what everyone wants to do - whether the team will drop out, or if the artist wants to go ahead and finish/post their art anyway!
The word count isn’t set in stone. We ask you to aim for 10k (more if you want!) but if your fic turns out shorter than planned, there’s probably not going to be an issue with that, as long as you keep your team in the loop. That said, 10k isn’t as much as it sounds, especially not for 6 months. Technically it’s just over 50 words a day!
What if I change my mind about my fic halfway through the event?
This depends on a few factors. It may be fine, but there is a non-zero chance that it will result in us asking you to drop out, or having to change your team, so we would really discourage it if at all possible. We do understand inspiration can be a difficult thing though!
If it’s before claims open, just let us know and submit a new summary, and we’ll edit the claims form. If it’s during claims, again let us know, and the course of action will depend on where we’re at with claims.
If it’s after claims are done, please communicate clearly with your team as to the summary, warnings, and ratings. If they’re all okay with it, that’s great - just let us know. However, if any of your team is uncomfortable, get in touch with the mods, and we’ll come to a decision as to what can be done.
Can I write an OC?
Yes! Just be aware that, like all other elements of your fic, might be taken into consideration by the artists when requesting the authors they’d like to partner with. However, the main focus, or at least 50% of the focus, of your work should be at least one of the canon characters.
Can I use a fic I’ve already been working on?
If it’s not been posted yet, then of course! This can be a really good opportunity to give yourself the motivation to finish that one idea you had but never finished.
Can I write a sequel to a fic I’ve already written?
Big Bang fics should be able to stand on their own, so direct sequels aren’t allowed. However, we understand there can be a grey area in some cases, so get in touch if you’re unsure.
Can I rework an already posted fic?
It should be fine if you're for example elaborating on a short one shot, but the majority of the story has to be previously unposted and made for this event.
Can I write a crossover?
This unfortunately isn’t an event for crossovers. While you can write from/about more than one adaptation of MDZS, crossovers outside of the MDZS universe are not allowed.
Can I post my writing as podfic?
As long as it's on AO3, that should be fine! Please indicate on your fic details form (this will be sent out after sign ups close) so that we can match you with the right team.
Can I post my work anonymously?
Yes, but the mods and your team will need to know who you are in the creation process.
Can I use AI to write/make art?
This event is about creation, so it’s a hard no on any AI content.
What counts as Art?
Anything that comes out of your beautiful brain! Art takes many forms, so really the only limit is your imagination. Be it painting, digital art, gifset, song, podfic, or anything else - as long as you created it and can post it to tumblr or AO3, it counts!
Can I make a moodboard/playlist/something that contains other people’s work as part of a larger creation?
Okay, grey area here! Moodboards and playlists are absolutely acceptable, but the key here is proper credit and permission. If you have more specific scenarios that you’re unsure of, send us an ask.
Can I sign up more than once?
There is usually a limit to the number of artists and betas, and an overwhelming number of authors, so please don’t sign up to write more than one fic, but if you want to art/beta for more than one, that’s brilliant! Also consider signing up as a pinch hitter later on (see above).
Can I co-author/co-art?
Of course! Please sign up as one entry so we can keep things organized.
Can I be/make my own team?
This is intended as an event to create a sense of community in the fandom, so we’ll team up the artists and writers. However, if you have a beta reader already, or don’t want one, you can let us know when you submit your claims summary, and we’ll exclude you from the beta reader claims.
It can be scary to meet new people, but it can also be really rewarding to work with people you might otherwise not encounter! And since the whole team will have shared/agreed to the summary and warnings, everyone knows what they’re getting into.
Who are the mods?
See our mod page here!
For any other questions, see our answered tag, or send us an ask!
