in defence of ginny weasley (ft fleur delacour)

never thought i would feel strongly enough about this topic to comment on it, but the ginny bashing in this fandom is just insane so i thought why the hell not. ginny seems to get hate for everything under the sun from being being a mary sue who can do no wrong in anyone’s eyes (meaning she’s boring and uninteresting as a character) to being a nasty bully responsible for hurting those around her (??? and they’re both completely contradictory statements btw). when the latter is brought up, ginny’s “terrible” mistreatment of fleur is always front and centre. ‘she’s nasty, she’s cruel, she is a jealous bully etc!’ and i just feel like we should put on our thinking caps and actually take a step back for a fucking second. people may disagree with me, but i think ginny’s reaction to fleur was totally understandable — and reminder, she is a TEENAGE girl, (not to mention both mrs weasley and hermione held fleur in the same regard but no one seems to focus on that side of things).

now in the books, we do see ginny mocking fleur, calling her ‘phlegm’ behind her back, imitating her gait and elegance, expressing her annoyance at her newfound presence in their lives.

let’s look at why she might have reacted that way. first of all, in general, we see that the w are a very humble and welcoming family; they don’t have much but what they do have, they are more than willing to share with others. their financial circumstance plays a massive role in how the characters in the wea clan react and interact with others (as seen with their refusal to accept money from harry etc). their sense of pride in that regard is also quite prevalent. we see that when harry first goes to the burrow, ron is slightly embarrassed by his home, painfully aware of the way many people in the wizarding community view/judge them. when harry goes on to say it’s best place he’s ever seen, we immediately see how touched ron is. ginny is the same in that sense — embarrassed that she has second hand robes & books etc, but at the same time she, like ron, is fiercely protective of what they do have, and what they as a family stand for. they are also very protective of people they love inside and outside of the family (see, ron with ginny, mrs weasleys with all of them etc).

this is relevant because one of the reasons ginny and in turn mrs weasley, have a problem with fleur is the way she talks to them. despite them inviting her into their home, fleur makes her distaste clear even if it is in small ways. she says it’s boring at their house as there’s nothing to do, she often talks disparagingly about how things are done in the weasley household, she loudly mocks celestina warbeck (who mrs weasley loves to play at christmas time) and insults her, she speaks badly about tonks several times etc. her words and mannerisms are also viewed by some (ginny etc) as very pretentious and arrogant — also rather posh, a sign of her family’s wealth (which might have been a sore spot for ginny also).

now don’t get me wrong. i love fleur as a character. i think she’s really cool, charming and brave, and i wish we got to see more of her honestly!! i think she makes a lovely contrast to the other younger characters, and i think she undergoes some nice character development in the books we do see her in. it’s also very clear to me, that when she acts the way she does, it is never out of malice or cruelty— it comes from a place of openness and honesty — which often comes across as quite blunt. it’s a cultural disconnect in many ways; when she inadvertently insults people throughout the books, i think it’s pretty obvious she isn’t trying to hurt anyone’s feelings. but i also think it’s obvious how this attitude might annoy those around her.

calling ginny is a big bad bully for disliking fleur (in the beginning), when her behaviour towards the weasley family would make anyone a bit frustrated, is a bit far. not to mention, her individual treatment of ginny is understandably annoying - ginny complains that fleur is very condescending when speaking to her (‘you’d think i were about three!’).

there’s also the fact that ginny is bill’s little sister. he is her favourite brother (as seen from the way she respects him and his opinions, looks up to him - she wanted to go to hogwarts ever since bill went!). ginny having a reaction to her brother’s new girlfriend is very normal - he’s her big brother! all his attention is now on his new girlfriend - who ginny finds to be full of herself, patronising & annoying. part of her may also be worried that fleur will end up breaking his heart in the end — because she’s protective of her brother.

add the fact that her brother and old crush and basically every man ever is drawn to her because of her godly beauty (as a part veela), her and bill’s wont to shower each other in public displays of affection (who wants to see their brother doing this!?) and the fact that ginny always gotten along with tonks (the person her and molly had in mind for bill’s future partner) has always treated her kindly and as an equal, and therefore would much prefer as a sister-in-law — it’s not that surprising that ginny feels the way she does towards fleur.

nevertheless, do i think this is something ginny would grow out of? yes, of course. we already see changes in their relationship in the final book. besides, a lot of this stuff is surface level, as ginny and fleur don’t know all that much about each other — i think fleur’s love for bill (especially shown in the hospital wing after he’s been attacked by greyback) definitely changes the way ginny regards her. i also like to think that they grew closer as they got older, as with age comes maturity, and with maturity comes understanding. i also feel that fleur was someone who really stepped up when it came to supporting the weasleys after fred’s death, something that ginny would have appreciated. i see them having a nice relationship later in life.

ANYWAY, this was an exceedingly long rant for which i apologise but i have often seen people talk about how nasty ginny is to fleur, and i think it’s so unfair to not look at the context which leads to her being a little frustrated at her future sister in law. plus, she is allowed to dislike someone who she does not get along with and who she finds unpleasant to be around. we all have people like that in our lives but god forbid ginny does…not to mention, ginny is never openly rude to her EVER, and she’s allowed to voice her frustrations to her friends/family. the fact people call her an outright bully for this is just insane.

people on here will defend so many other dubious characters but the second a teenage character with good intentions makes a mistake / doesn’t act perfectly (i.e ron, ginny), they are suddenly the epitome of evil in human form, i mean get a grip, honestly. also one last quick thing(!!!), i do note some people blame jkr for writing her female characters this way, as we’ve seen the way she seems to frown upon conventional/typical displays of femininity (lavender and parvati being seen as ‘silly’ girls with frivolous thoughts, cho chang as overly emotional - despite having a very rational reaction to the death of her boyfriend, fleur as overly feminine and therefore less serious/intelligent). her heroines are women who often conceal or discard these more feminine traits — and i will say that despite loving these characters very much, i do think some more nuance here, could have been very beneficial to the story, and to the message being sent to young female/female identifying readers. there is strength in femininity, and rejecting feminine traits does not make you more or less a person.

okay, rant over. if you actually got to the end, bless you, if not — well, that’s totally fair (lol). also please don’t kill me in the comment section if you disagree. this is just my two cents. ok that’s all.

Sorry, but for me J.K didn't write good romances. We don't know Astoria, Rolf and Hannah. Lupin and Tonks appeared out of nowhere. Jily is undrinkable. Hinny has little or no development over 7 books even though they have really known each other since volume 2. Romione is really not great from my point of view. Don't even get me started on Dumbledor and Grindelwald...

Bill & Fleur are the only ones, among the young characters, that I find cute and even then it's a very secondary couple. Honestly, Molly and Arthur are the only real Harry Potter goal couple in my eyes. And yet, they also haven't seen them much !

Much to Regulus’ dismay, Walburga didn’t find a new place to “haunt.” Instead, she seemed to latch her claws in even tighter. She proclaimed that she would never leave her home. Nothing that either of her sons had to say could make her do something that she wasn’t ready to.

The good part was she started avoiding everyone and only came out of the master suite if she absolutely had to. This was just fine with Regulus and Sirius. Neither brother seemed overly joyed to have to deal with their mother. It reminded you of zoo keepers having to deal with a ravenous lion. If it wasn’t for Kreacher, you had a feeling that food would be just left at her door with no indication that it mattered if she ate or not. You wouldn’t have been surprised if Regulus and Sirius were playing rock, paper, scissors to decide who would be the unfortunate one to deal with Walburga that day.

You, typically, would have felt sorry for Walburga but after seeing the state that she left Sirius and Regulus in…your “give a damn” was slightly broken. There was also the fact that as your pregnancy progressed you were feeling worse with each day.

“How are you feeling?”

You sighed at Regulus’ question. Looking up from your pillow you gave him a frustrated look.

“Awful! My back hurts. My feet hurt. I don’t think I can stretch anymore and if I don’t stop vomiting…”

Regulus winced, slightly regretting asking that question. He wasn’t even sure why he did. Regulus knew that you were feeling awful. For some reason, he kept asking how you were feeling. If you threw something at him for asking, Regulus wouldn’t be surprised. Normally, you were perfectly sweet and patient but as the pregnancy was progressing… your patience was failing you.

“So…the same?”

Regulus added. You only stared at him. Regulus gave you an innocent shrug. You knew that he was probably as tired of you being pregnant as you were of actually being pregnant. He was too good of a man to say it, however.

“I am never doing this again. I used to want a big family but now I am thinking my parents are mental.”

Regulus chuckled as he moved to put his coat on. He was getting ready to go away for a week, which was also fueling your frustration.

“Well, lucky for you I have never had the desire to have a house full of children.”

You groaned.

“Good, because this is a one-and-done shot. I might possibly jump off of a building if I have to do this again.”

Regulus chuckled before kneeling down beside you. He gently pushed some of your hair away from your face and leaned down to kiss you.

“You can’t jump off of a building and leave me alone with all of these people. You’re the only one keeping me sane. Never mind the fact, that I know absolutely nothing about babies. What if I forgot ours somewhere?”

Regulus was relieved when you giggled.

“You wouldn’t forget them anywhere.”

Regulus blinked a few times.

“My mum and dad forgot me at a funeral parlor once.”

Your mouth dropped. Why this surprised you, you didn’t know. If Regulus told you that his father had forgotten his son’s name it wouldn’t have been entirely shocking. Orion Black seemed to be more of a conversational piece than a father and husband.

“Please tell me that you are joking.”

Regulus shook his head as his face darkened a bit. It was really no wonder that he turned out the way that he did. With his parent’s version of “love” it was a bloody miracle that he was able to talk to you in the first place…let alone be in a healthy relationship.

“Dead serious. I was alone with a corpse for like four hours until Sirius realized that I was gone. It was a lovely experience for a five-year-old to go through.”

You put a hand over your face. If you needed yet another reason to dislike your mother and father-in-law, you had one.

“That’s horrible! Regulus, you would never do something like that to your own child. You are a lot more self-aware than your parents apparently were. Why don’t you just sit this job out? Sirius can go for you.”

Regulus leaned down to kiss you again. He hadn’t told you the exact nature of this job. Something was going down at Hogwarts and The Order needed to get there fast. Regulus watched your face for a moment. He wanted to enjoy each moment looking at you…in case something happened. While Regulus didn’t plan on dying if something happened…he just wanted to enjoy the moment.

“It's already planned with me going. Sirius is going too. If you need me, Kreacher will be able to get to me quickly.”

You wanted to be selfish and tell Sirius to pack an overnight bag. He wasn’t the one expecting twins at any given moment. Regulus was. You had accepted the fact that the twins would probably come early. If Regulus was gone while you were in labor, you would personally throw the biggest tantrum on him that you could muster.

You also weren’t the least bit happy about being stuck in the house alone with Walburga. There were many other tasks that you would be doing versus being stuck in the house with your mother-in-law.

“Fine…if you have to…It seems like all of you are going. Is there something that you aren’t telling me, Regulus Black?

You asked as Regulus moved to stand up. He gave you an innocent look, praying that you would buy it. The last thing that Regulus wanted was to tell you exactly what you were missing out on. Regulus knew that if he told you where he was going you would demand to go. The further away you were from Hogwarts the safer you would be.

“Everything will be just fine. I promise.”

Regulus replied. He knew it was a lie. It was a bold-faced lie and he never should have done it but he did.

“Alright then. Please be careful. It's only a matter of weeks before the twins come and…I can’t do it without you.”

Regulus leaned down to kiss you once more.

“I’ll be back before you know it.”

Sirius stepped into the doorway to see if Regulus was ever coming along. He hadn’t said it but he was amazed at the turnaround Regulus made personally. What had been a moody sullen arrogant teenager had turned into the world’s best husband. You were the one thing that Regulus cared for the most in the world.

“Ready?”

Sirius questioned. Regulus’ grey eyes flickered to his brother before looking back to you once more. Putting a hand on the side of your face, Regulus forced a smile and again prayed that you were believing the bullshit that he was offering.

“See you soon.”

Sirius waited until the front door shut before turning to face his brother.

“You haven’t told her exactly what is going on at Hogwarts, have you?”

Regulus shook his head.

“No, she doesn’t need to know. I need to focus on the task at hand. I won’t be able to do that if she's running around fighting too. One of us will get killed and it will probably be me. Y/n is safe here with mother.”

Sirius muttered “fuck me” under his breath. If he knew anything, it would be the fact that you would be furious for not only missing what would be the biggest battle known to Wizardkind but the fact that Regulus lied. Sure, his brother’s intentions were good. No one’s pregnant wife needed to be putting herself on the line like that she needed to know.

“Reg, she’s going to be pissed.”

Regulus again glanced over his shoulder making sure that you weren’t anywhere nearby.

“Pissed or not, she and our children will be alive. She’ll forgive me soon enough. Now let's go and stop talking about this.”

The two walked in silence until Sirius started chuckling. Regulus’ eyes rolled over to his older brother with a scowl.

“What?”

He questioned. Sirius finally got a grip on himself before speaking.

“I would be pissed if you left me with Walburga. The old hag will probably be having Y/n help her organize her obituary scrapbook.”

Regulus rolled his eyes. The last thing that he wanted was to think about his mother. While Regulus really didn’t want to kill Walburga himself it was beginning to look like that was a decent option. The woman was making everyone’s lives miserable.

“When we get back, we need to make a plan to get rid of the old bitch. If we don’t, she will haunt us until she dies again…that is too long away for my liking.”

(several hours later)

You sat in a near haze listening to Walburga rattle on and on about her dead relatives. While Regulus and Sirius made no effort to hide their contempt for their mother (a prime example was Sirius purposely stepping on every crack in the sidewalk to “break his mother’s back.”) you were trying your best to be somewhat decent to her. It was getting harder as your pregnancy progressed. Your patience was thin and listening to this old bitch be nothing but rude to both of her sons was wearing on you.

“And that’s how Aunt Estrella died…Y/n are you listening to me?”

You blinked a few times to pull yourself from your trance.

“Yes…I am.”

Walburga shook her head.

“If you are going to lie to me at least make it about something good. Your eyes have been glazed over for the past half an hour. So, without my son hovering over you like an overprotective mother hen, I can talk to you properly now. What are your plans for the twins? It has to be getting near time for them to be born. I do hope that Regulus and yourself have made plans for a good nanny.”

You had to stop yourself from laughing at the expression on Regulus’ face when you told him that Walburga compared him to a mother hen.

“Actually, no. We haven’t made any plans for a nanny because they are our kids and we can take care of them ourselves.”

Walburga looked totally baffled by that comment. She had never once been without a nanny at least until Regulus was 7. If she had to take care of her children all on her own, it would have been a major inconvenience that Walburga just couldn’t phantom.

“But what about when both of you are tired…or when Regulus is working?”

You leaned back in your chair.

You moved to stand up as Sirius walked in. His disheveled appearance quickly caught your attention. You didn’t give Walburga a second thought before muttering, “I’ll have to get back to you on that” and going to your brother-in-law.

As you approached him, you realized that his eye had a massive cut under it and his nose had been bleeding. Panic surged through you as you realized Regulus wasn’t in the room.

“Sirius! Are you…Regulus? Where is he?”

Sirius attempted to fix his now-destroyed hair. He wanted to make a joke that it would take ages to make it look right again but your expression told him that you wouldn’t appreciate it like normal. The terrified expression on your face told Sirius that you were NOT in the mood for any of his humor at the moment.

“He’s fine! I swear! Regulus sent me. I need you to come with me and try not to panic…I would say to keep an open mind but there is no way to prepare you for what you are about to see.”

You felt your mouth drop at Sirius’ words. Telling you not to panic worked as well as stabbing you and saying “Ah, you’ll be alright…just ignore the bleeding.”

“Sirius…”

Before you could even finish the sentence, Sirius apparated both of you to what was left of Hogwarts. Your mouth dropped even further the moment that you saw the castle that you loved so much nearly destroyed. Looking around, all you could see was sheer carnage. Bloody students and other various adults were wandering around looking totally lost.

The moment that Regulus walked out of what was the great hall, you all but ran to him.

“Regulus!”

You had nearly knocked him down before Regulus could even get a word out. All that mattered to you was the fact that he was alive.

“Y/n…”

He started but you cut him off as you started looking him over in a state of panic. His clothes were dusty and torn in a few places. Thankfully, he appeared to not have much physical damage other than a bruised cheek and busted bottom lip.

“Regulus, what the hell?!”

“Y/n, I’m fine. Everything is going to be…”

You cut him off yet again.

“If you say fine, I am going to slug you! Nothing about this looks fine! I thought that you said this was a small job. Are you seeing the same shit that I am!”

Regulus reached out and cupped your cheeks.

“Y/n, I am okay. He’s gone… Voldemort is gone.”

“Harry! Oh, Merlin, is Harry…”

“He’s fine! He’s okay. I didn’t tell you because, given your condition, there was no way in hell that I was about to let you come here and be potentially hurt. I had to keep you and the babies safe.”

You looked around as a nearby wall partially collapsed. Turning back to Regulus, you mentally tried to ignore the screaming in your head that today could have very well been the day that you lost the man that you loved. Yes, the dark lord was dead but the good side clearly had a ton of losses too.

“What if you had died? How do you think that I would have felt knowing that I never got to see you again? What about our children…Regulus, I am…”

Regulus pulled you back into another kiss silencing any further words. You slipped one hand onto Regulus’ cheek before sliding to the back of his head and tangled in his curls. Neither Regulus nor yourself seemed in any hurry to let go of the other.

Regulus pulled away after a moment but didn’t move too far away from you.

“Because I knew you would panic…I’m alive, here and with you…that’s all that matters.”

You kissed him again as Regulus placed one hand on your stomach.”

“You really are the most stubborn man that I have ever met. If I didn’t love you so much I really would punch you in the face.”

Regulus chuckled as his eyes went to Arthur Weasley. He sighed immediately. Regulus knew what he had to tell you and he didn’t want to. He didn’t want to ruin the intimacy of this moment and break your heart but he had to.

“Y/n, I do need to talk to you about one thing though. Not everyone made it. We nearly lost Tonks and Remus.”

You stepped back as your eyes widened. In all of the chaos, you realized that you had yet to see any members of your family.

“My parents? Brothers? Ginny?”

You quickly asked. Regulus’ face darkened as he rubbed a hand over his face.

“They’re fine…everyone except Fred…darling, he didn’t make it.”

Regulus’ words felt like a bullet to your heart. Fred was gone. Everything in your heart came to a screeching halt as you looked around.

“Where are they?”

“In the great hall.”

Regulus replied softly. You took a few deep breaths before turning and running into the great hall. Regulus remained motionless for a moment before turning and going after you. This was the part that he dreaded. Regulus could deal with the fighting and chaos but the aftermath was something that he was not emotionally ready for. He would have to attend the funerals. See the loss in his friend’s eyes as they realized the ones that they cared the most for weren’t coming back.

When he stepped into the great hall, you were kneeling down beside George and Molly. Regulus had to look away. He couldn’t bear to see the look of sheer heartbreak on your face. It was bad enough when the Weasleys realized that Fred was dead, to begin with. Now here you were, the one human that he loved the most in the world, having to face the reality that your little brother was gone and nothing could be done about it. He would have to stand by and watch as you went through some of the darkest days and he wasn’t able to protect you…for once he could do absolutely nothing.

You, meanwhile, sat staring down at Fred’s face. His eyes were closed making him look as if he was only sleeping. Part of you wondered if he would suddenly sit up and say “Got you!” You prayed that would happen. For once, you wanted nothing more than for Fred and George to be playing one of their pranks…but you knew that wasn’t the case. The heartbroken look on George’s face, as he sobbed in Arthur’s arms, told you that this was no joke.

Even though you had your own heartbreak to deal with, you knew that George was experiencing devastation worse. Fred was George’s other half…the other half to the puzzle…now he was gone. You slowly looked up at Bill. Your own twin stood holding his wife but his eye was locked on your face. Without even speaking, you knew that the two of you were thinking the same thing. Neither of you would know how to make it without the other. Bill was the other half of your soul. He was the one who came into the world with you. While the two of you still had each other…George was not missing his other half.

In the noise and chaos, you could only think one thought…

End Game Romantic Relationships

Hi, let's get into what my endgame relationships are for my Rewrite, how I change them, how they develop and why I chose them.

Before we get into any of the ships, the first thing I'm going to say is that none of the main five end up with each other. Meaning no Ronmione. The reason for this is because I wanted all the main five to end up with someone outside of the main friend group to me it makes more sense with what I have planned. Now let's get into the ships;

Hinny - Harry x Ginny

I kept these two being canon because I think the concept of they're love story is cute. I also am doing a rewrite of Cursed Child and I need the kids to exist. Seriously though I think these two would be good for each other and I'm going to lead up to them more. I basically make Harry have a crush on her as well so they're relationship is just mutual pining for awhile until Ginny has had enough and asks Harry out near the end of the fifth book.

Fremione - Fred x Hermione

Honestly considering the canon of the Cursed Child, I think Fred and Hermione are a better couple. Especially since Fred has always gotten along with Hermione. I think they're a better example of "opposites attract". Fred and Hermione get together in the fourth book after Hermione dumps Krum. They're relationship is more of a secret though cause of Molly's behaviour scared Hermione. The first people that were told were George, Neville and Percy.

Nuna - Neville x Luna

One, how could I not? Two, they deserved better. Neville and Luna flirt with each other and are the type of couple that are just "they were dating before it was official", they do become official after book five. Neville asks if she'd be his girlfriend and she responds with "I thought we were already dating?"

Blairon - Blaise x Ron

I needed to include ONE main Slytherin x Gryffindor ship in here. I specifically chose this one because it fits with the arc I have planned for Ron. Ron is very clique in my version of the story, often being hostile towards people who try and befriend his friends, especially Slytherins so him going from that to dating a Slytherin I think fits. There is also an arch for him being afraid to be a disappointment to his family and I think him dating Blaise would be a good ending to that arc as well. They start liking each other during they're time in Dumbledore's army, Blaise is the first one to flirt, he also invites Ron to Slughorn's party. They don't get together until after Hogwarts.

Drastoria - Draco x Astoria

Childhood Friends-Enemies-Friends-Lovers. That's it. Draco has always loved Astoria, he thought his crush on her went away but when they met again at Hogwarts it came back full force. Astoria took a while to start liking Draco, it only really happening it the seventh book. Astoria and Draco start being friends again during the fifth book, they get together during Astoria's last year at Hogwarts.

Literally the most gorgeous/elegant couple you will ever come across. The type of couple that slow dances in the kitchen at night. They share jewelry, especially earrings, at this point they don’t even remember who bought what. Bill still buys flowers Fleur every chance he gets <3 Fleur can’t bake to save her life but it’s okay because Bill makes amazing baked goods, especially brownies and pies. Fleur is incredibly accommodating to all of Bill’s needs after he’s attacked. They love laying in bed together until the afternoon. Also definitely take bubble baths together nightly.

I’d love if you ever expanded your thoughts on the way JKR writes romance, because it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while. One thing that’s very interesting to me is that jealousy is used as a driving force for both of the main romantic storylines in HP. It’s more obvious with Ron/Hermione (the Yule Ball, basically everything that happens between them in book 6, the locket horcrux stuff) but also plays a big role in Harry/Ginny. Harry’s jealousy of her relationship with Dean is what makes him realize he’s into her, and moments where he’s pining for Ginny tend to focus on that jealousy more than an actual appreciation of Ginny’s personality. The most important part of writing a convincing romance is making readers believe that these characters actually care about each other and want to spend time together, and it feels like maybe what you describe as JKR’s obsession with pining made her lose sight of that. What do you think?

We've also got jealousy as a motif in Harry/Cho and Severus/Lily. It is absolutely a trope she uses, a lot. 

When I was trying to get my head around how JKR writes romance, the main thing that made it click for me was realizing that, to her - romance is inherently threatening. And/or embarrassing, overpowering, animalistic, dangerous. (thanks to @the-phoenix-heart for that line.) 

Really, the Harry Potter books are kind of a romance-free zone. It is incredibly unusual to see a romantic couple, acting like a couple, on the page. We spend a lot of time with Arthur and Molly, and while they’re both pretty fleshed out as characters, we get almost nothing of their couple dynamic (and what we do get doesn’t seem all that positive…) The blocking tends to physically separate them - Molly isn’t at the World Cup or Harry’s hearing, Arthur is working overtime when Harry is at the Burrow, etc. This is a pattern: her romantic couples, of which there are not many, have a way of being in different rooms, on different side quests, one of them is mind-controlled, one of them is unconscious, it cuts to black right before Harry kisses Cho, and right after he kisses Ginny.

Ron/Hermione takes place mostly outside of Harry’s perspective, and Harry/Ginny takes place mostly out of *the reader's* perspective. It’s a lot of narration, a lot of “Harry could not help himself talking to Ginny, laughing with her, walking back from practice with her” and “[Harry] was supposedly finishing his Herbology homework but in reality reliving a particularly happy hour he had spent down by the lake with Ginny at lunchtime.” Like, I don’t know. I might have liked to see those scenes play out.  

Bill/Fleur is probably her most successful couple (I mean, who doesn't like Bill and Fleur?) But even they almost never interact with each other. They talk about their relationship to other people, other people talk about them, but like… I’m just going to go through a rundown of every single time Bill and Fleur interact as a romantic couple: 

 “’E is always so thoughtful,” purred Fleur adoringly, stroking Bill’s nose. Ginny mimed vomiting into her cereal behind Fleur. Harry choked over his cornflakes.

(Romance = embarrassing) 

What if [Ron and Hermione] became like Bill and Fleur, and it became excruciatingly embarrassing to be in their presence, so that he was shut out for good?

(Romance = embarassing, threatening)

Most [of the people at Dumbledore’s funeral] Harry did not recognize, but a few he did, including (...) Bill supported by Fleur and followed by Fred and George

(put a pin in this one, I’m going to come back to it) 

“Bah,” said Fleur [in Harry’s body], checking herself in the microwave door, “Bill, don’t look at me — I’m ’ideous.”

(I actually think this is kind of cute in context, but unfortunately JKR is being uncharitable to her hyper-femme characters again, and making a joke about woman-in-male-body, which unfortunately makes it less cute in the grand scheme of things) 

“I’m taking Fleur on a thestral,” said Bill. “She’s not that fond of brooms.” Fleur walked over to stand beside him, giving him a soppy, slavish look that Harry hoped with all his heart would never appear on his face again.

(Romance = embarrassing) 

“We saw [Mad-Eye die]” said Bill; Fleur nodded, tear tracks glittering on her cheeks... 

(Not sure if this counts as them interacting, but they are at least next to each other)

“No,” said Bill at once, “I’ll do it, I’ll come.” “Where are you going?” said Tonks and Fleur together. “Mad-Eye’s body,” said Lupin. “We need to recover it.”

(this one doesn’t even frame them as a couple, since the teams have split into Bill and Lupin and Tonks and Fleur.) 

“We can’t tell you what we’re doing,” said Harry flatly. “You’re in the Order, Bill, you know Dumbledore left us a mission. We’re not supposed to talk about it to anyone else.” Fleur made an impatient noise, but Bill did not look at her.”

(... does this imply that Fleur isn’t in the Order? Anyway, they’re married at this point, and kinda disagreeing a la Molly and Arthur) 

[Griphook] continued to request trays of food in his room, like the still frail Ollivander, until Bill (following an angry outburst from Fleur) went upstairs to tell him that the arrangement could not continue.

(Another conflict, but hey, at least it sounds like they resolved it. We hear about their daughter Victoire in the epilogue, but this is the last time we see Bill and Fleur together.) 

But, okay. Not putting romance in the Harry Potter books is a perfectly fine creative choice. JKR can absolutely decide she just wants to give other things more emotional weight. What clarified this for me was the Fantastic Beasts films and her adult literature (particularly the Cormoran Strike books.) In those, JKR is wanting to write romance. And yet....

In Fantastic Beasts, she can write the awkward getting-to-know-you pre-romance stuff, but the second Jacob and Queenie are actually a couple - he loses his memory, then he’s brainwashed, she’s with Grindelwald, they’re different plot lines that never intersect… and then they just get married at the end of Secrets of Dumbledore. So it’s not even a slow-burn, will-they-won’t-they thing. Tina and Newt get the same treatment, except their pre-romance getting-to-know-you beats are so subtle that a lot of people missed them completely. Then Tina's angry at Newt for a very silly misunderstanding… then in a separate plotline… and is only in the third film for two minutes at the end. People compare the structure of these films to Indiana Jones, but in those movies the love interest is actually hanging out with Indy the whole time. In the Cormoran Strike books, the romantic leads do spend time together, but they’ve also been doing a pining, bad timing, will they/won’t they back-and-forth thing for seven books. And they’re long books. 

So okay. What’s going on. Why is this. 

JK Rowling has been very public about the trauma she has from abusive relationships and sexual assault, and I’m afraid I do have to bring that up in a conversation about why she treats romance so negatively. More specifically - if I had to guess - I think she finds male attraction towards women threatening. (I’m sure we all remember Harry’s chest monster.)  I think she feels a little icky writing it, which is why when she does do it… it feels perfunctory, generic, repetitive, and also not the sort of thing that would come from a teenage boy. (Like when has a 14-year-old boy ever thought a girl was pretty because she had nice teeth. That’s such a straight girl compliment.) BUT, when she writes about the attractiveness of guys - it gets more specific, more nuanced, more interesting, and also a lot less uncomfortable. J.K. Rowling likes guys! She’s allowed. 

But of course, she also tends to write male viewpoint characters, and I think this is why a lot of her guys (and Harry specifically) kinda read as queer to a lot of people. We’re told Harry is distracted by/attracted to Cho Chang… but is he though? Compared to the way “pretty boy” Cedric, or “sleek haired” Draco get under his skin? 

I want to take a look at her adult romantic leads for a second. Because in Fantastic Beasts, she really did pull out all the stops to make Newt and Jacob as non-threatening as humanly possible. Newt is a gentle, pacifist, Doctor Dolittle-type conservationist who barely seems interested in women at all, and Jacob… is a Muggle baker. She pairs Newt with Tina, tough as nails American star auror. Jacob is with Queenie, who is constantly literally reading his mind. Which is an ability we’ve only seen with the most powerful wizards. These guys are not a threat to these ladies. In Queenie’s case, the power balance is tipped so insanely far in her direction that I’m a little bit worried for Jacob (and she does in fact, bewitch him into doing stuff.) I think JKR wrote her couples this way so any romance she wrote with them would also feel safe… and sadly I don’t think it worked. The most fleshed out couple dynamic we get is Dumbledore/Grindelwald, who have a coffee date and a duel in the third movie. But - that’s the one movie where she doesn’t have sole screenwriting credit, they’re exes, and they're also both GUYS, so she doesn’t have to worry about any kind of male/female power imbalance gunk, or put herself in the headspace of a guy being attracted to women.

Now I do want to talk about Cormoran Strike. Of all her non-threatening male love interests, this is the one who seems to work best for her. She’s stuck with him the longest, and it actually seems possible that we might get an actual romantic scene with him in the next book. 

Here’s my theory. I think that when JKR was writing Goblet of Fire, and it came time to introduce the real Mad-Eye Moody - imprisoned in the bottom of his own trunk, weak, down a leg and an eye -  something clicked. Because that is someone who is both entirely masculine, and entirely safe, and that makes him the perfect romantic figure. And I absolutely think she grabbed that archetype when it came to writing Cormoran Strike.

Basically, this character just is Mad-Eye Moody, only 15(ish) years younger, and non-magical. Strike is an ex-military cop who now freelances. He’s older than his love interest, he’s been around the block a few times. He’s gruff, but careful and kind, world-weary and grizzled, extremely capable, principled, tough, and just sort of hyper aware of what’s going on around him. He is also a bigger guy with some access weight who is not “conventionally attractive” - and for JKR this is a feature, not a bug. If your female character is into someone who is not *~*~handsome~*~* that means they’re cool, deep, not like other girls. Viktor Krum is not conventionally attractive, and (after the werewolf attack) neither is Bill. In fact “he now bore a distinct resemblance to Mad-Eye Moody.” JKR likes Mad-Eye Moody. 

And you better believe that Cormoran Strike has a broken nose and a missing leg, just like Mad-Eye Moody. Strike’s prosthetic leg comes up a *lot.* I think it’s telling that the loving interaction we see between Bill and Fleur is her physically supporting him at Dumbledore's funeral post werewolf attack, and the loving little wrist squeeze we get between Lucius and Narcissa is right before Lucius hands his wand over. Basically, JKR likes someone who is sexy and capable and has a lot of presence, but who you get to take care of, and who… can’t chase you. Doesn’t pose a threat. That's the fantasy.
