I have no idea how big the “have seen both, liked both” cross-section on the Venn diagram of these two shows would be, but I’m assuming I’m among a very small percentage. However, if it turns out that a bunch of people actually have seen POI, then I’m gonna change up the dialogue.
This is just for research purposes btw, don’t feel obligated to read it when it’s done lollll
And if none of these apply to you then uh thx for reading anyways 😅👍

Is Neil Perry a Manic Pixie Dream Boy? 🍁
What is the Manic Pixie Dream Trope?
The Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope, coined by film critic Nathan Rabin, refers to a quirky, whimsical character who exists to inspire the brooding male protagonist to embrace life’s joys. Think of characters like Sam in Garden State or Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But what about boys? The Manic Pixie Dream Boy flips this script. These characters are equally eccentric and effervescent, shaking the lives of the protagonists with their charm and unbridled passion. Examples include Peter Pan, who literally whisks Wendy away from her mundane life; Augustus Waters (The Fault in Our Stars), whose metaphor-filled antics bring light to Hazel's world; and Theodore Finch (All the Bright Places), who pulls Violet out of her grief. The thing about Manic Pixie Dream Boys? They’re often destined to leave—sometimes by choice, sometimes tragically.
How Neil Perry Fits the Trope
Neil Perry (Dead Poets Society) is the epitome of the Manic Pixie Dream Boy, bringing color and life to everyone around him, particularly Todd Anderson. Neil isn't just a member of the Dead Poets Society; he’s its heart. While Mr. Keating inspires the boys with his philosophy, Neil is the one who revives the group, encouraging everyone to "seize the day" in practice, not just theory.
Neil’s Quirky Personality
Neil’s boundless energy manifests in his playful and creative antics, like grabbing Todd’s poem and dancing around the room with it, or turning Todd’s unwanted desk set into a "flying" object in a bid to cheer him up. His enthusiasm is infectious—where Todd sees an overwhelming world, Neil sees possibility and wonder. Even outside his interactions with Todd, Neil constantly uplifts his friends. He encourages Knox to pursue Chris, supports Charlie’s rebellious streak, and believes in the potential of his peers. Neil’s passion for acting is more than a personal dream; it’s a beacon for the other boys, showing them what it looks like to truly live.
Neil as the Catalyst
Neil rekindles the spirit of the Dead Poets Society, giving the group its purpose. While Keating plants the seed, Neil cultivates it, making the society more than just a secret club—it becomes a sanctuary where the boys can explore art, emotions, and their innermost selves. In this way, Neil isn’t just part of Todd’s story; he’s the catalyst for every boy’s personal transformation.
The Tragic End of Every Manic Pixie Dream Boy
If the hallmark of the Manic Pixie Dream trope is leaving, Neil tragically follows the script. His vibrancy, optimism, and dreams are extinguished not by choice but by the oppressive reality of his father’s expectations. Just as his energy inspires Todd and the others to live authentically, his death forces them to confront life’s stark realities. Neil’s demise parallels the fate of so many Manic Pixie Dream Boys. Peter Pan returns to Neverland, his absence forcing Wendy to grow up. Augustus Waters succumbs to his illness. Theodore Finch’s brightness fades, leaving Violet to carry the lessons he taught her. Neil, too, departs at the peak of his influence, leaving behind a legacy that galvanizes Todd and the other boys to seize their own lives... or die from the inside out.
In Conclusion
Neil Perry isn’t just a character in Dead Poets Society; he’s the embodiment of the Manic Pixie Dream Boy archetype. His quirkiness, passion, and unwavering support for his friends make him unforgettable. But like all Manic Pixie Dream Boys, Neil’s story ends too soon, leaving those he touched to carry his lessons forward. Neil may have left, but his spirit lives on in the Dead Poets, in Todd’s newfound confidence, and in every audience member who watches him seize the day.

So I made this post about a new, original and clearly superior alternative Tim Drake superhero name that is NOT Cardinal, and that got me thinking:
Who else could use changing some things up?
And then came the obvious answer - Jason could use some individuality after all this time.
Going from taking up the hefty legacy that is Robin to the absolute opposite side of the spectrum and going by an alias of the man that killed you can't be healthy, especially for so long
So I present to you, completely new and as of now not claimed yet by anyone codename for Jason:
Firefinch
I have several reasons for choosing this particular one, so I'll start with the easiest: color palette - both are mainly known for they red and grey-brown coloring, as you can see bellow
So now going to the interesting bits, let's talk about finch-named birds symbolism in general:
Finches by themselves are associated with joy, happiness and brightness of life, for which Jason as Robin was known for and which went up proverbial flames after his death.
They also, like many other passerine birds besides the most known canaries, were used in coal mines to detect carbon monoxide. That could reference his story being a cautionary tale that should be heeded, with him dying in the proverbial mine to let others get out before they die too
Second we have goldfinches, which symbolise sacrifice and resurrection due being haevily associated and often depicted with Jesus, sometimes resurrected by himself. The red on its head is apparently according to legend is from Christs blood that splashed onto it after it removed one of the thorns from his crown (yes, I'm serious)
And lastly from my arguments, surname of the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird, who due to seeing how unfair and corrupt the system is loses faith in it, is Finch (which Jason 'Local Boockworm' Todd would obviously know)
Why Firefinch in particular?
Because they persistently change up their code names so that they are two syllables and I knew I wanted him to be some kind of finch. (I’m still mad about them changing Duke’s Lark because he’s like the only one of them that has his outfit even remotely designed to resemble the bird it represents, but at least they didn’t do it marvel way and just added “black” in front of it)
Also, comic books just love alliterative names for anything
Other options that I've considered but decided weren't cool enough include: Redpoll (type of rosefinch, which by itself could be an option), Bullfinch, or if you want to really play up the resurrection aspect, just straight up Goldfinch
Edit: I've changed my mind, Redpoll is the ultimate codename.
Not only does it have the red exactly where he does (head and chest)
It also contains "poll", and we all know the reason why Jason died in the first place (plus "poll" is apparently other name for head so it doesn't even change his name that much, it's equivalent of fall vs autumn)
#red hood#jason todd#batfam#dcu#dc universe#batfamily#batman#dc#my post#wondering who i should do next#like i know i wont do dick cause nightwing is already an established hero with an actual explanation for his name#he has his own legacy#ill leave damian alone for now cause he basically just got his title and he should have some fun with it before we try to change it#or until they find another kid to fill in as robin#oracle is a separate being so im not even gonna try to touch her#but duke cass and steph are fair game imo#so which one would you like to see the most?

i see you talk about narrative foils a lot and i looovve it every time, but someone i haven't seen you talk about (apologies if i've missed it) is hermione. does she have a narrative foil ? who is it ? i love your blog so much xoxo
thank you very much for the ask, anon!
hermione's really interesting narratively because she's one of the only main characters [dumbledore is the other] who doesn't have a specific mirror character.
and this is - of course - because her narrative purpose is to be a mirror for wizarding society in general.
she's the only main character who's muggleborn [all the others we actually meet in canon - justin finch-fletchley, colin creevey, penelope clearwater, ted tonks etc. - are just incidental cast; lily is more important narratively - obviously - but her narrative importance is as a fragmentary figure] and her background is inextricable from her role in the series: to make clear that both blood- and magic-supremacy are wrong, and to make clear that the rot in the wizarding world goes far beyond voldemort.
without her - if our only perspectives were harry and ron's [a half-blood celebrity with a pureblood father and a full pureblood respectively] - the reader would get the impression that voldemort's message about wizarding supremacy is reasonable, and it only becomes unreasonable because voldemort uses violence to impose it.
[an impression the canon text doesn't quite avoid giving anyway... even though it's clearly not what jkr thinks is happening.]
as a result, because there's not another muggleborn main character [who would undoubtedly end up being her parallel] the text ends up assigning her to numerous mirror-pairings across the seven-book canon, usually with characters who are non- or part-human: such as hagrid [especially in prisoner of azkaban], dobby, winky, and kreacher [especially in deathly hallows - it's very striking that she ends up assuming the service role, doing literally everything to feed the trio and then being criticised for not performing this labour to ron's standards], and - most explicitly - griphook, in the latter stages of deathly hallows:
"But it is, it is about precisely that! As the Dark Lord becomes ever more powerful, your race is set still more firmly above mine! Gringotts falls under Wizarding rule, house-elves are slaughtered, and who amongst the wand-carriers protests?" "We do!" said Hermione. She had sat up straight, her eyes bright. "We protest! And I'm hunted quite as much as any goblin or elf, Griphook! I'm a Mudblood!" "Don’t call yourself -" Ron muttered. "Why shouldn't I?" said Hermione. "Mudblood, and proud of it! I've got no higher position under this new order than you have, Griphook! It was me they chose to torture, back at the Malfoys'!" As she spoke, she pulled aside the neck of the dressing gown to reveal the thin cut Bellatrix had made, scarlet against her throat.
harry and ron, in contrast, remain in the same mirror-pairings throughout, both of which also have a blood status-related dimension - harry with voldemort and ron with draco malfoy.
there are some legitimate issues - related to jkr's own worldview - with hermione's placement in these narrative mirrors, above all that it never takes hermione's class-based advantages [which enable her to have references for many of the social and institutional conventions which are near-identical in the wizarding world and the muggle, especially the fact that hogwarts mirrors the sort of school she and her parents are clearly familiar with] into account [despite the fact that jkr is otherwise very well aware of just how posh she is...]
[the fact that she's presented as an extremely pro-state liberal assimilationist and the fact that her narrative purpose doesn't quite gel with the idea that "all is well" once voldemort dies also doesn't help.]
but her purpose is nonetheless to make a point about the entrenched poison in wizarding society, which harry is otherwise astonishingly disinterested in, despite knowing that his own mother was a victim of blood-supremacist discrimination.

Okay so I know they aren't the most popular characters, likely due to not much being known about them, but I genuinely think there was some real potential and mystery in both Felix and Vallory's backstories.
To start with we know that Felix was extremely smart, being able to bypass Hyperion's biometric security, hack into their systems and change his information, and made one of a kind things like Fiona's elemental derringer (or Sasha's healing pocket watch before it got retconned to be that stupid crystal). He was crafty, he was intelligent, and there was some mystery in his backstory teased in Tales.
The first time we find out that he had a past Fiona and Sasha didn't know about is in Hollowpoint, when Fiona finds a picture of a younger Felix with a woman that neither her nor Sasha recognise, but with Fiona remarking that they seem happy.
It's surrounded by multiple empty bottles, and since neither of the girls have ever seen the photo before it's fairly easy to assume it brings up painful memories. The photo has a crease down the middle which would probably indicate that it was something he carried around with him, folded up in his pocket instead of just being hidden away in a drawer somewhere.
Now there's a chance it could be a younger Vallory sure but considering how it's never elaborated on I don't think that's something that can be said for certain. Either way the pair are dressed in outfits that seem similar to each other, which would probably mean that they weren't just emotionally close with each other but probably worked together as well.
Now regardless of whether or not that woman in the picture is Vallory, we know that Felix and Vallory DID have prior history together. He clearly is afraid of what she can do, she's been well aware of both Fiona and Sasha for most of their lives despite them never hearing about her before which would likely indicate she'd been keeping tabs on Felix. On the contrary, Felix was completely unaware of what was going on in Vallory's life, that August was her son until the vault key deal was already in progress, which would mean he likely wanted absolutely nothing to do with Vallory and tried to stay far out of her life, potentially even trying to hide from her to protect both himself and Fiona and Sasha.
---------------------------------
Now then, onto Vallory. Vallory is introduced as the Queenpin, she's a feared crime boss that has some connections at Hyperion and plenty of bandits at her disposal. She's tactical and cruel and is one of the main antagonists for the Tales crew.
Regarding her relationship to Felix, she clearly holds a grudge against him for some prior reason that isn't explained. Sure she's mad about the vault key deal but she goes out of her way to tear Felix out of the photo she finds of him, Fiona, and Sasha.
She also seems to focus far more on Fiona, directing her questions at her, taunting her, and referring to her as the leader of the Tales group. She's callous and cruel and can stab either Sasha or Vaughn to deliberately to fuck with Fiona and make her agree to her terms.
She has connections at Hyperion. At first it seems like it's just Vasquez she knows but then Finch is able to walk around Helios freely without having to blend in so it seems likely she has more. When this started it isn't clear, whether it was while Jack was alive or after his death. We know Hyperion had dealings with some criminals on Pandora before, like with turning people over for experimentation, so it's possible she had a hand in that or something similar.
But where I think it gets really interesting is when Fiona confronts her during episode 5. While talking about the Traveller she says "it's bigger than any I've ever seen" which would seemingly point to her being someone involved with vault hunting in the past or at the very least involved with someone else who was vault hunting. Sure she could have seen the Warrior from a distance when Jack awakened it but that's not really enough to mention the Traveller being bigger than any vault monster she's ever seen.
That's not to say I think she was a successful vault hunter or anything, but maybe that she was someone who was able to attempt it and get pretty far, or was allies with someone else that did.
Aside from that Athena seemingly knows her, and Vallory was more than willing to fight Athena before August stopped her. Vallory isn't stupid, she sends in her goons to do her dirty work when she doesn't want to get involved. For her to be willing to fight a literal assassin/vault hunter, even if it was impulsively, she must have some kind of confidence that she could actually get somewhere with that.
Hell she even has the ability to contact the Crimson Raiders and enlist the help of Mordecai and Brick to take out Athena, sure they needed to get her for Lilith but the fact that Vallory even knew that they were going after her and implies that she has some idea of why is impressive.
All in all I think that those two were really interesting characters and I wish we would've gotten more lore about them, why they knew each other, what they did before, and what exactly was going on between them.
#borderlands#tales from the borderlands#tftbl#Vallory the Queenpin#Felix the Inventor#like these were clearly two capable individuals way more than the average pandoran citizen#were the originally from pandora or were they left by one of the many corporations that harass the planet#i would like to know
