todd is horrible at eye-contact, horrible in the way where he can barely hold it with someone for two seconds without looking elsewhere. the only time he ever looks at people is when he's checking to make sure they're still listening to him. neil is the opposite. eye-contact is one of his strengths, partially because of all the acting he does. he finds no problem with looking at people when he speaks. if anything, he finds it nice to let people know he's paying attention to them. with todd, neil loves to stare at him as he rambles on about writing or his day or what he ate for breakfast, analyzing the same face he's seen a thousand times before. same blue eyes, same brown hair, same lips, same nose, same everything. he enjoys looking at his boyfriend, and he makes sure to listen to every word he says, even if it all comes out in a stammered mess, because he never wants todd to feel overlooked.

The reason why I love (and obsess over) Dead Poets Society so much is not because I wanted to be a teen boy in the late 50's attending a boarding school, but because I wanted what those seven boys had: a real, honest and loyal friendship, trying to live their lives and hopes to the fullest; and navigating through girlhood with people that accepted and loved me.
I was so in love with Neil, because I could relate to Todd so much: his anxiety, his insecurities and fear of being judged, his loneliness.

The thing with Cameron is that he represents tradition and we can see that at the beginning of the movie, during the opening ceremony to welcome the new school year, carrying the banner that reads "Tradition", while Knox carries the banner of "Discipline" and, although I'm not sure, I think is Neil the one who carries the banner of "Excellence".
So, since the very beginning, the story is telling us about Cameron's character and his alignment with tradition and thus, the institutions and the status quo. And I don't think that he is a bad person per se just because of it, but he never understood the rest of the boys and their curiosity for exploring new things and finding their voices and that is the reason why he confesses everything to the school after Neil's death, breaking some kind of unwritten code between the boys.
The system crushes them, but instead of trying to reveal in his own way like the rest of the boys, Cameron decides to align himself with the institution, the tradition and the status quo that led to Neil's death.
thinking about richard cameron and literally near tears.
the other poets don’t (at least i chose to believe for my own mental health) intentionally leave him out. i just think when your in a big group like that it’s easy to get left out.
what that thing? “there’s always a duo within a trio”?
i don’t think they leave him out or push him aside on purpose. i just think including cameron, who’s a bit odd, a bit of a kiss ass, isn’t on the top of their priority list.
And to add on to that— i don’t think cameron puts himself on the outskirts bc be thinks himself better. i think if you really watch the movie critically you see him wanting to be included at every turn.
he goofs off with the boys at dinner, he goes to the meetings even though he thinks them dangerous, he helps them study (idk about you but i have NEVER helped someone i didn’t like study..)
the poets don’t intentionally leave him out but they don’t make concentrated effort to bring him in. it’s no wonder when the group he’s never felt fully a part of disintegrates, he’s the first person to offer a tell all.
Tumblr media
he wasn’t a terrible person plotting against them from the beginning. he was a 17 year old kid looking for approval from his peers.
he wanted what we all want, community, and i think it’s exponentially tragic that he never got it.

I’m sure it’s been said before but there’s just something so unmistakably human about Dead Poets Society. The movie itself is stunning and does a wonderful job of bringing everything to life from the acting, to the messages, to the cinematography. You can tell that so much work went into making every little detail mean something. I’ve found what I love about the movie most though is that I can see myself in every character whether I’m proud of that or not. I find especially my fear manifests similar to Camerons’s. It’s dysfunctional and makes me lash out in defense. My happiness similar to Neil’s, is so intense I bleed with it. The writers made sure that each character not only served their part in the script, but truly brought to life what it means to be alive. Being a teenager isn’t easy, being human isn’t easy, and that is reflected in the personalities and actions of every character. That movie showed that we are all human no matter how free and ambitious we are or trapped and scared we are. We all have the chance to seize the day, to seize our own ambitions whether we’re fearless and outspoken or shy and terrified. Our moment in the sun will come and we’ll be able to face it just fine.
