My favorite FFVIII moments from the FF 25th Memorial Ultimania Vol. 2 — Part 1
The summary of the game:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Squall's character summary:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Squall saving Rinoa from being cryogenically frozen forever is among his "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The moment when Rinoa genuinely, sincerely, fell in love with Squall is among his "Memorable Scenes":
^ Read that again, carefully: "Just Stay Close to Me — On the surface, these words only refer to Squall's concern for her safety, yet they sway the young girl's heart."
There's the confirmation, folks. Rinoa didn't fall in love with Squall for being "the best looking guy here," nor for his supposed bad boy charm/troubled but cute appearance. She fell in love with him because he was protective of her. That's a far more realistic and organic reason to fall for someone, not to mention way better than simply falling for a handsome face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Squall revealing all of his insecurities to the comatose Rinoa on the bridge of Fishermans Horizon is also among his "Memorable Scenes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Squall's promise to Rinoa, to meet her at the flower field in Cid and Edea's orphanage, is also among his "Memorable Scenes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinoa's character summary:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinoa wanting everyone to know that she and Squall are pretty much dating at the end of Disc 2 is among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinoa's "hypnotism" on Squall at the SeeD graduation ball having worked on him after all, albeit very slowly, is also among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinoa's feelings for Squall being confirmed as love — not a crush, not an infatuation, but love — when she wants him to hug her in the Ragnarok is also among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinoa hearing Squall while she's drifting away in space is among her "Memorable Scenes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinoa falling into Squall's arms, with her feelings for him being confirmed as love a second time, when he saves her from the Sorceress Memorial is also among her "Memorable Scenes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quistis calling out Squall for letting Rinoa be sealed away in Esthar, despite everything he'd done to save her, is among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quistis admitting that she gave up on her inappropriate crush on Squall** after Rinoa danced with him is also among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quistis being jealous of Squall dancing with Rinoa is also among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quistis getting angry with Rinoa in Deling City because she sees her as her rival for Squall's affections*** is also among her "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Laguna finding his heart changing as he spends time with Raine and Ellone in Winhill — which is very similar to how his son will find his heart changing as he spends time with Rinoa during their journey (as stated in Squall's character summary above) — is among his "Memorable Quotes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Laguna remembering the night he proposed to Raine in Winhill, almost two decades later, is among his "Memorable Scenes":
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ward allowing Squall and his party to leave the Sorceress Memorial with Rinoa, with the description confirming that Laguna is Squall's long-lost father, is among his "Memorable Scenes":
This also implies that it's canon for Zell and Quistis to be in Squall's party when they rescue Rinoa.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Raine's character summary, which confirms that she and Laguna are Squall's long-lost parents:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Moomba's character summary, which confirms that Laguna is Squall's long-lost father:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The romance scene between Squall and Rinoa in the Ragnarok is among the FFVIII Memories:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Notes:
** = It doesn't matter that Quistis is only a year older than Squall. She was still his SeeD instructor for about a year, meaning she was in a position of power and authority over him for about a year. Therefore, it was very inappropriate for her to have a crush on him.
*** = This is despite the fact that Squall literally never liked Quistis to begin with — which was already confirmed in her previous Memorable Quote: "[...] rationalizing Squall's lack of interest." During the revelation sequence in Trabia Garden, Squall remembers that Quistis was "difficult to deal with" even at the orphanage. Even when they were children growing up together in the orphanage, Squall didn't like Quistis. Her crush on him was doomed from the beginning, long before Rinoa even showed up.

FF8 Theory - The True Origin of Sorceresses
In the background of Final Fantasy 8, they tell the origin of the Sorceresses and it's rooted in the story of a being known as the Great Hyne. Here's what we first hear in Balamb:
That's the basic story in the beginning. We more details later in the game in the White SeeD ship. Let me summarize:
Th Legend of Vascaroon says Hyne was the ruler of the world that created Humans. Like before, Hyne surrendered half his body, then there was a war for control of that half. Vascaroon was the one that pointed out - what was left behind was Hyne's skin. (Maybe not his entire half-body.)
The ultimania books have one final version of the story called -
Aru Hi no Garden no Jugyō Fūkei
The story says Hyne created the world, created Humans to work for him because he were tired. While Hyne was asleep, Humans ran the world on their own. When he awoke, Hyne was startled by their numbers, so he tried exterminating their young, and the humans started to turn against him.
Hyne bargains for the end of the war by willingly giving up half his body, and telling the early humans they would have half his powers. There was another war, and then Vascaroon, who was a sage, says the "half" of Hyne's body is just his cast off skin. This is how the persecution of Magic Users / Sorceresses began.
When you read all three stories, it becomes clear that these are ancient tales that have become distorted over time. The real details have been lost. Maybe it was all bullshit made up to persecute women.
However, I ask you now to look at Ultimecia's Final Form:
That looks like half a magical parasite growing out of Ultimecia's normal body. And it looks like it's missing part of it's skin, don't you think?
So, Hyne was probably real. And, that begs the question, who or what is Hyne, really?
Final Fantasy takes place in a Multiverse, and across the various games, we have seen strange entities similar to how Hyne was described.
The fact that it was so old and wants to kill humans for overpopulating and altering the world, did make me think that Hyne could be a Weapon. But, Weapons seldom show true sentience and the ability to scheme, so it is highly unlikely Hyne was a Weapon.
In between the alternate dimensions of the Final Fantasy Multiverse there is The Void where strange and powerful entities live. And they love to consume everything and leave everything in darkness. But, they're not known to scheme or bargain like Hyne did. So, it's a possibility, but a tad unlikely.
Not unless the whole beginning part of the myth is false. Like Hyne wasn't the creator of humans. Maybe it was an entity like Cloud of Darkness, it awoke, humans fought and won, then fought over its body, thinking it would give them powers.
But, then, why would Hyne exist as a parasite in sorceresses? Like we see in Ultimecia?
Let's talk about Jenova. "The Crisis from the Sky" is an alien lifeform that arrived in the ancient times of FF7. It is fairly powerful, but not all powerful. It was known to shapeshift, but Jenova also has the ability to survive being cut to pieces. Exposure to Jenova's cell's (or a virus) causes people to transform into monsters.
And we see a few other sorceresses in FF8, that are steadily becoming more monstrous:
Yes. I'd have to speculate that Jenova is the closest thing to Hyne. The might have been the same species, or something similar. Hyne probably arrived from outer space in the ancient times. It might have been injured or just asleep when it first arrived.
When it awoke, it started killing people. This drove the humans to corner it and kill it. Then they fought over the remains of the body, thinking it would give them magical powers. the carcass had no powers, but later women started to manifest magic and turning into monsters and that's what started the persecution of the Sorceresses.
Sorceresses in FF8 have to pass on their powers to another sorceress before they pass on. This is what passes the Hyne parasite on to the next person, and is somewhat similar to Jenova's Reunion ability.
What we see manifesting in Ultimecia is Hyne's true final form. It's been gestating inside of Ultimecia for a long time, finally growing powerful enough to absorb all of existence, and yet it still bears the scars from the original war.
At least that's my interpretation.

I’m excited for Ever Crisis to show the truth about the compilation:
1. Tifa admits her & Cloud aren’t a “real” family:
“Tifa turns away, disappointed. “I guess that only works for real families.“ ~Case of Tifa
2. Cloud has his own bed in his office, and Tifa sleeps with Marlene:
“Marlene, who had always slept with Tifa, slept with her foster father Barret the night before he left.” ~Case of Tifa
3. Cloud believes Denzel was brought to him by Aerith:
“Denzel had collapsed in front of Aerith’s Church. That’s why I thought Aerith lead him to me.” ~Case of Tifa
4. Nojima speaks of a premise that things won’t go well between Cloud & Tifa:
“…there’s a premise that things won’t go well between Tifa and Cloud, and that even without geostigma or Sephiroth, this might be the same.” ~Kazushige Nojima
5. Marlene observes that Cloud & Tifa aren’t getting along well:
“…she told Barret in a sad voice, “Cloud and Tifa aren’t getting along very well.” ~Case of Tifa
6. Tifa admits to not knowing if Cloud loves her:
“Do you love me?”
Cloud opened his eyes. He looked perplexed.
“Hey, Cloud. Do you love Marlene?”
~Case of Tifa
7. Barret is a member of the Seventh Heaven family:
“Barret turned round and shouted, “Do your best!” His voice was a little shaky. “Unite the family’s strength and keep at it!” ~Case of Tifa
“Upon finding out that Edge was under attack during the midst of his travels, he rushed over towards the crisis faced by his family and companions.” ~10th Anniversary Ultimania
8. Tifa refers to herself, Cloud, and Barret as a family of friends:
“Tifa thought she could get over anything while being with friends that she could call her family.” ~Case of Tifa
9. Tifa is jealous of Cloud & Aerith’s relationship in both FFVII & AC:
“Both of them share feelings for Cloud —
Tifa was close to Aerith, who can also be called a love rival. With that point in mind, they were also good friends.
Nevertheless, it is not hard to imagine that she carries complex feelings as a woman toward Aerith, who had built up a special bond with Cloud that was different from Tifa’s. Tifa’s complicated feelings continue even in Advent Children, two years after Aerith had departed the world.” ~10th Anniversary Ultimania
“The thing which she is unable to hide in her irritation towards Cloud is the fact that he isn’t merely dragging the past around, but because that reason might perhaps be related to Aerith.
Final Fantasy VII: Seeing Cloud and Aerith developing their world together before her eyes, she inadvertently lets slip her peevish feelings.
Advent Children: Upon knowing that Cloud had been residing in Aerith’s Church after leaving the place they had been living in together, her expression becomes complex.” ~10th Anniversary Ultimania
10. In DoC, the furthest point in the compilation, Tifa is still referred to as Cloud’s “childhood friend” (which makes sense because Cloud & Tifa share zero moments of romance):
“Cloud’s childhood friend and a master of martial arts.” ~Tifa Lockhart DoC description
11. In DoC, Barret & Tifa are seen driving in a truck together. Barret returns to living with the Avalanche family:
“Currently he is living with Marlene, the orphaned child of his best friend…” ~DoC Official Complete Guide

Omega Ultimania: Lucrecia loved Hojo.
According to the official Ultimania Omega, translated by Turquoise Hammer (Twitter), not only was Vincent's love for Lucrecia one sided, but Lucrecia actually LOVED Hojo... thus willingly throwing away her morals for his sake. Yes, you read that correctly.
In the Character section for Hojo and in the footnotes for Vincent, it is noted that Hojo had been suffering from inferiority complex, to which Lucrecia gravitated towards in an effort to protect him in a 'maternal sort of affection'.
So yes... Lucrecia legitimately loved Hojo, even though in DoC they made it appear her denial of Vincent was out of guilt. Poor Vincent got taken big time. It wasn't until the end of DoC where Lucrecia began to realize she actually did have feelings for Vincent, but the damage had already been done. Sephiorth was proof of that.
What does this mean for Remake? So far, characters who I had previously disliked from OG, I now find fun and enjoyable in Remake. So I'll reserve myself to see what can be done for Lucrecia. But to realize she had just been flirting with Vincent, won his heart, and then dumps him because she actually loved Hojo and not Vincent...? We shall see.

My favorite FFVIII moments from the FF 25th Memorial Ultimania Vol. 2 — Part 2
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Rinoa's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, and not in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Rinoa's "Memorable Scenes." Once again, this implies that it's canon for Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, and not in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
Um, excuse me, "assaults"? "Assault" means to "make a physical attack on" and "the illegal act of causing physical harm or unwanted physical contact to another person, or, in some legal definitions, the threat or attempt to do so." Rinoa literally doesn't physically attack Squall. Hell, she never even touches him throughout this whole scene and the guided tour that comes afterwards. Where the hell is this damn "assault", localization team?
Not to mention that it doesn't match up the rest of the paragraph, which describes the scene more favorably — "convincing him to show her around the Garden", "audacious behavior." I don't know what this sentence looks like in its original Japanese kanji, since these screenshots are from the official English translation, but all I know is that it's a poor word choice to use.
I'm pointing out the incongruity of the word because I'm a survivor of both physical and sexual assault. So when that word is used incorrectly, I take offense.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Quistis's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Squall, Zell and Selphie to avoid fighting the X-ATM092, leading to the FMV of Quistis destroying it and saving Squall:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Quistis's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to allow Irvine to form a party with Rinoa and Selphie, leaving Quistis and Zell with him, as they exit Galbadia Garden:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to question Zell's leadership and his ability to watch over and protect Edea ("...Not too sure about that") in Lunar Gate:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for the Combat King 003 sidequest (a.k.a., the Zell's Love Quest) to be completed:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for not only Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, but also for Zell to be in his party as well. This also implies that it's canon for Quistis and Irvine to be in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for the Deep Sea Research Center sidequest to be completed, and for Zell to be in Squall's party throughout the sidequest:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Selphie's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to: 1) not jump off the cliff after Selphie, and instead take the long way around; 2) disagree with Zell about jumping off the cliff ("I don't know about that…"), despite not doing so himself, leading to him calling Zell a "chicken-wuss" like Seifer does and Selphie following him:
Bear in mind, however, that this exchange will actually lower your Attitude score during the SeeD field exam. So, why the Ultimania implies that this exchange is canon is anyone's guess.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Selphie's "Memorable Scenes." Once again, this implies that it's canon for Zell and Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, and it's canon for Quistis and Irvine to be in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Selphie's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Selphie and Rinoa to be in Squall's party when they visit Trabia Garden:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Irvine's "Memorable Scenes." Once again, this implies that it's canon for Squall to allow Irvine to form a party with Rinoa and Selphie, leaving Quistis and Zell with him, as they exit Galbadia Garden:
Also, way to go, localization team. The party left Galbadia Garden, not Trabia Garden.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Laguna's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Zell and Selphie to be in Squall's party when they fight Adel:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Kiros's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to talk to Laguna, Kiros and Ward in the Ragnarok as they prepare to save Ellone:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Kiros's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Quistis and Zell to be in Squall's party when they meet Laguna, Kiros and Ward in Esthar:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Cactuar's "Memorable Feature" in the Monsters section. This implies that it's canon for the Cactuar sidequest to be completed, and for Zell and Irvine to be in Squall's party throughout the sidequest:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under PuPu's "Memorable Feature" in the Monsters section. This implies that it's canon for the PuPu UFO? sidequest to be completed, and for Zell and Rinoa to be in Squall's party throughout the sidequest:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Adel's "Memorable Feature" in the Monsters section. Once again, this implies that it's canon for Zell and Selphie to be in Squall's party when they fight Adel:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Odin's "Memorable Scene" in the Extra Content — Guardian Forces section. This implies that it's canon for Zell and Rinoa to be in Squall's party when they fight Seifer in Lunatic Pandora:

FFXV Official Works, English Version, Coming February 2021
Today, Dark Horse through Penguin Random House announced that The Official Works guide will be released in English on 09 February 2021.

Don’t forget these key points:
1. Tifa refers to herself, Cloud, and Barret as a family of friends:
“Tifa thought she could get over anything while being with friends that she could call her family.” ~Case of Tifa
2. Tifa admits her & Cloud aren’t a “real” family:
“Tifa turns away, disappointed. “I guess that only works for real families.“ ~Case of Tifa
3. Cloud has his own bed in his office, and Tifa sleeps with Marlene:
“Marlene, who had always slept with Tifa, slept with her foster father Barret the night before he left.” ~Case of Tifa
4. Cloud believes Denzel was brought to him by Aerith:
“Denzel had collapsed in front of Aerith’s Church. That’s why I thought Aerith lead him to me.” ~Case of Tifa
5. Nojima speaks of a premise that things won’t go well between Cloud & Tifa:
“…there’s a premise that things won’t go well between Tifa and Cloud, and that even without geostigma or Sephiroth, this might be the same.” ~Kazushige Nojima
6. Marlene observes that Cloud & Tifa aren’t getting along well:
“...she told Barret in a sad voice, “Cloud and Tifa aren’t getting along very well.” ~Case of Tifa
7. Tifa admits to not knowing if Cloud loves her:
“Do you love me?”
Cloud opened his eyes. He looked perplexed.
“Hey, Cloud. Do you love Marlene?”
~Case of Tifa
