FF7 Rebirth Ultimania - Mini Vincent Bio
Tumblr media
https://x.com/aitaikimochi/status/1778701268686651539
A small snippet of Vincent's biography has been translated from the very recent Rebirth Ultimania. While much of it isn't new per se, there is a small bit that I wanted to focus on as it is a small change from OG. 'Sleeps a lot because he wants to suppress the monsters within him' For anyone familiar with Vincent's who initial characterization in OG, it should make your brow raise. The whole reason why he chose to sleep in his coffin was to atone for his sins which is what Vincent has been memed for for many years. However, in Rebirth, we don't get any such hint of that within the main story. The only bit of regret we learn about is with his past with Sephiroth and not being able to kill him. However, at least according to the Ultimania, Vincent's past sins are not the reason for his slumber... but rather to suppress his monsters. This is new. While it was always eluded to, this isn't Vincent's original reasoning. It seems like Square is leaning very heavily into Vincent's monsters, aka the single glowing eye, how Barret calls him a freak (he says 'monster' in Japanese) upon immediate transformation, Galian Beast as a boss, Vincent becoming uncomfortable when Barret scoffs at the idea of monsters having feelings, etc. My guess is that SE is going to characterize Vincent having a lot of fear of himself and his lack of control over his demons (which again was hinted at in various compilations but casual fans would never have known this). And seeing as there seems to be a mysterious connection between Sephiroth and the whole theme of monsters, it could be that Vincent is also afraid of becoming what Sephiroth has already become-- a merciless killer. This would make sense as to why Vincent is so resistant to joining Cloud and Co, not only due to whatever happened between him and Sephiroth, but also fearing himself and how he believes he is a monster. I could see this also playing into Vincent keeping himself distant from the party in part 3; not only because he doesn't want to get close to anyone (so as to not get emotionally hurt), but he may be terrified of losing control of his monsters and harming those he cares about.

coming back to this in light of recent discussions on dev interviews and the ultimania to say that I think it's oh so funny that the same people who are so adamant that Aerith needs to stay dead because the theme of loss is the heart of the franchise are the same ones who are extremely against the idea of Cloud dying
I'm honestly just not sure if the main theme of the FF7 remake trilogy is loss anymore. Of the original? Yes, by a mile. I would say it's even the overarching theme in the compilation too, but fate, destiny and choice (promises, even) seem to be the new thematic focus of the story.

A bit more content containing Vincent, although if you have played through this or watched playthroughs, there isn’t any new info. It mostly summarizes the story around where you meet Vincent. There will be plot spoilers. Translations under the cut ❤️
(Blue quoted caption at top)
(Cait Sith) It’s perfect! I’ll go on ahead to the mansion first and find the computer terminal.
After leaving the Nibel Mako Reactor, Cloud and company discover vestiges of a battle between Shinra and Wutai. The owner of the card key, section manager Mr. Murasaki, appeared to have been caught up in the fighting, and was found dead inside the Mako Reactor. Upon Cloud and the others acquiring the card key, Cait Sith communicates with the computer terminal in the Mako reactor, and unlocks the Shinra Mansion via remote control.
Those that went into the Shinra Mansion earlier with Cait Sith rejoin with Cloud, and in the basement they come across Vincent, a self-proclaimed security guard. While Cait Sith gains permission to operate the computer terminal, Cloud is transfixed by something in the laboratory as if drawn to it, but is assaulted by a terrible headache. Immediately after, the party finds themselves staring down the barrel of Vincent’s gun.*
(*I had to rephrase this slightly because the literal translation is uhhh… “Directly after, Vincent thrusts the mouth of his gun at the party,” but that sounded kinda sexual. Is that just me? Anyway, go ahead and write your fanfics about who you want him to thrust his gun at specifically ;)
(Blue quote caption; this is Vincent’s now-famous line ❤️)
“I don’t recall giving you permission to go into that room.”
Vincent transforms into the shape of a magical beast and attacks the party, but they drive the monster back, and he refuses to speak to them further. Cloud and the others are able to get the information related to the Temple of the Ancients from the computer terminal, so they leave the Shinra mansion.
Then, Roche, who had undergone [Sephiroth/Jenova] cell injection surgery from Hojo, challenges Cloud in what appears to be his final battle. After the fierce battle, Roche's condition rapidly deteriorates and he turns into a member of the hollow black-cloaks, then leaves the scene.

About Tifa's 'Censorship' in Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth...
So, recently, I found out that in Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth, Square 'censored' Tifa by putting a black shirt under her crop top.
Tumblr media
And lots of FFVII fans are mad about it. Here are some of those comments...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Nibelheim Incident, the part where they 'censored' her, took place 5 years before the start of VII. At the start of VII, according to the Remake Material Ultimania, she is 20 years old. This means that, during the Nibelheim Incident/The Tragedy of Five Years Ago, Tifa's age is: 20 - 5 = 15 years old. 15 ≠ 18. This is also mentioned in her character profile from the Crisis Core Ultimania. Nobody wants her to be a teenager in that scene. She IS a teen. It's in the math. And it's in the canon timeline.
Your 'fan service waifu' was 15 years old at that point in the game. A high schooler. A CHILD. A MINOR.
While she is a fictional character, the fact that all of you are so DESPERATE to see a 15-year-old's cleavage and are boycotting the game over a black undershirt is really telling of how y'all are in real life.
They're not censoring adult Tifa. They didn't put her in a beekeeping suit at Costa Del Sol in Rebirth, did they? No, they put her in a bikini. Simp over adult Tifa. Not teenage Tifa.

Yesterday was Rebirth's Ultimania release day! And... it was a lot calmer than I expected lol? I've never been active in the FF7 fandom before even though I got into it ever since Remake dropped so seeing everyone acting like it would be doomsday and complete hell on earth made me worried. Maybe I just curated all my feeds a lot to avoid the sort of person who incites those fights? I hate having to do that though because I genuinely like seeing different opinions/interpretations than mine but so much of it comes across as straight up petty in this particular fandom.
Generally, I dislike the penchant this fandom has to rely on Word of God for literally any interpretation for whatever is presented to us. It's a bit insane, actually, because Death of the Author seems to not exist at all and usually, when that's the case, it's because you can see the Hand™ moving the pieces purposefully and not allowing the characters to grow into their own but here it's more like the audience simply won't let it die, even if it's corpse is begging them to. Square Enix, of course, is willingly profiting off of it (tho I wonder just how much the ultis sell lol) .
I think that's why the RE Trilogy seems to be so interested on a metatextual discussion. This time around the Ultimania didn't really reveal anything that interesting and/or surprising overall (other than Elena being 18!!! like HUH????? wdym she's only 2 years older than Yuffie please be serious) BUT it did make me a lot more hopeful for Aerith's ending in Pt. 3 than the game itself haha. I've seen some thoughts floating around about how faitful it will be and I genuinely think they must end it on a different note than the original.
You see, I don't even think the original had a bad ending? It's bittersweet, yes, but that's sort of the point? People die but life prevails, you must go on and leave your past behind. The compilation, though, just retconned that, from my understanding. Now humanity is gone in 500 years after the ending, Geostigma happens and our protagonists become suicidal after the events of the game. Cloud's parting words "I think I can meet her... there" are cast upon a new light and it's not a hopeful one. Though, I think most allarming is Lifestream White and Lifestream Black, where we see both Aerith and Sephiroth condemned to an eternity of loneliness fighting and avoiding each other in the lifestream.
