Vincent is a former Turk, he's mastered stealth, deception, disguise, and most importantly: bullshitting with confidence. But he's tired, he's too old for that shit. Why bother changing your appearance when you can just gaslight an entire company into believing Sephiroth was always 6'0" with glowing red eyes and a cape.

*Zack opens the door to Sephiroth's office*

Zack: Hey, Seph—

*He pauses, sees Vincent standing at the window dramatically, red cloak billowing despite no wind*

Zack: …Uh, excuse me? Sir? Where's Sephiroth?

Vincent: I am the general.

Zack: No you're not.

Vincent: Aren't I?

Zack: …No?

Vincent: Hm. Strange. Because I feel like Sephiroth. I sound like Sephiroth. I'm standing in his office, drinking his coffee, brooding at his window. I have his paperwork. I opened three of his emails and deleted them without reading. If I'm not him, then who am I?

Zack: Are you gaslighting me?

Vincent:

Zack: Are you trying to convince me Sephiroth has always looked like this?!

Vincent: Have I not?

Zack: …I'm not so sure anymore.

*Vincent reaches out and ruffles Zack's hair*

Zack: !! <3 Okay, you're Sephiroth!

*The real Sephiroth opens the door*

Zack, drawing his sword: Sephiroth, sir, shall I eliminate the imposter?

Vincent: Fair, please, show the janitor some respect.

Cloud: Every time I talk to my mom, she always tells me that I should date someone who is older and more mature than me, but I haven't found anyone like that who is interested in me!

Zack, putting his arm around Cloud: Well, you know, I'm older.

Cloud: Oh, you're right! You know a bunch of people who are older and more mature! You can introduce me to someone!

Zack: You know, I have a pretty good job; could totally support someone.

Cloud: Yeah, someone in SOLDIER would be perfect! Oh! What about that Kunsel guy? He's mature. We wouldn't even have to date for real, just pretend we are so my mom doesn't worry about me so much.

If I remember right, I had a very brief and subtle period of frustration over Genesis when I played Crisis Core and he wouldn’t stop quoting Loveless + when he was tearing into Sephiroth in the middle of the latter’s breakdown in the reactor, but I don’t think I ever remotely hated him.

I kept groaning like, “Ugh Genesis, you gotta stop, man. You don’t GET IT, bro,” while simultaneously loving the stir-up he was causing. I live for friendship breakdown drama and he was making the story REALLY juicy lol.

But what I recall more is my first impression of him and Angeal in that training scene. I had already adopted Sephiroth into my very soul, but when I saw his friends, I literally yelled inside “OH GOD HE HAS FRIENDS. HE HAD TWO WHOLE FRIENDS JEDHDJ. AND ONE OF THEM IS A REDHEAD. THEY’RE SO COOL!! SEPHIROTH HAD FRIENDS!!!”

(I’m a sucker for a good friend trio. ALWAYS).

And Genesis being this prideful, fiery warrior….taking on Sephiroth with real fucking determination…

Like on one hand? It was love at first sight. I initially just needed to know who it was that Sephiroth would be friends with, but that devolved into: Who are these characters on their own?? Who is Genesis?

I think that feeling overpowered any frustration I had with Genesis. I started getting irritated at the Loveless quoting only because I wanted to hear more of Genesis’ actual thoughts and feelings. I started getting infuriated at the “reactor divorce” because of the tragic communication breakdown, not because Genesis was lashing out.

And when I saw gamerbros and Maxdood dissing him, I started getting really protective lol. Out of sheer spite, I analyzed Genesis’ scenes to understand why he goes on about Loveless, I really tried to determine if his appearance in the reactor took away from Sephiroth’s agency like people said, and I tried to understand his character’s layers. I dug into the “Dark Souls lore” of Crisis Core, analyzing it like a game where the answers weren’t spoonfed to you…and yeah, Genesis became way deeper to me. I really fucking love him.

He enriches the story, he enriches Sephiroth, he stands on his own as a unique character. Even his “rip-off Sephiroth” aspects that people think are cheap actually make SENSE for him and for how he relates to Sephiroth. It all makes sense in greater context, and yeah, CC’s execution is rough, but I get what they were going for.

Angeal has been a slow-burn. I love him now. But Genesis was a whole storm of feels from day one, and while I’ve calmed down in obsessing over his character and lore, I definitely hold him in high regard as a character. He’s in top favs status. His depth is all there, but it needs the same on-screen fleshing out that Angeal is getting. I want more people to understand and appreciate this redheaded spitfire so badly.

Genesis is BASED, actually.

thinking about the casual touches between these two and how Sephiroth is so awkward with it that it has to be new for him, and how he's probably mimicking Zack and still trying to figure out the best way to go about it with this new person who's become a friend to him

because when Zack reaches for Sephiroth the next morning it's natural, and he has to have done it a dozen times by now because he's like that. He's the guy who tackle hugs his friends so casually touching people he likes isn't new to him. He'd probably struggle with not touching them

the tragedy with them really is that they just didn't have enough time to grow a little closer to each other

(also the fact that Sephiroth is the one to initiate the first touch but that's a topic for another time)

Sephiroth: The dog was struggling. The Vice President was flailing. It was one or the other.

Tseng: So you prioritized the dog?

Sephiroth: Yes. He was innocent. He couldn't swim.

Tseng: Neither could the Vice President.

Sephiroth: He has two arms, that's his problem.

Tseng: Witnesses say the dog was swimming in the direction of the Vice President to try and help him.

Sephiroth: The poor creature must've been confused.

Tseng: You swam past the Vice President. Twice.

Sephiroth: As we age, our bodies do little to ameliorate our vision.

Tseng: You're in your 20s.

Sephiroth: Capitalism ages us young.

Tseng: You told security to "let natural selection run its course" As you threw the Vice President's emergency flotation device at the dog.

Sephiroth: Circle of life.

Tseng: The Vice President filed an official complaint. Do you have anything to say for yourself?

Sephiroth: Yes. Tell him next time, bark louder.
