Chapter 6: The Atoning Hero and Remorseful Chosen (Part 10)
(Part 9) | (Final Part)
Kratos and Sync go to the Ocean Temple with Mithos to where Martel is supposedly being held. Let's all hope that they find her and absolutely nothing goes wrong. Note: cutscenes use outfits you have equipped to characters. Sync and Mithos are in something called Spirit Gear outfits cuz I think they're snazzy :)
Part 10 (Ocean Temple)
Tumblr media
Sync: …What a nasty place. It’s so damp and humid. ……嫌なところだな。じめじめして。
Mithos: Martel… 姉さまは……。
Tumblr media
Tigr: I’ve been awaiting you, Mithos. 待っていたよ、ミトス。
Mithos: Richard… リチャードか……。
Tigr: That is the name of this body’s owner. My name is Tigr, the noble northern tiger. I’d prefer if you used my name. それはこの体の持ち主の名前だ。僕はチーグル。高貴な北方の虎だよ。いい加減名前で呼んで欲しいなぁ。
Tigr: In your original world, you were trying to transfer a soul into an entirely new body, weren’t you? Then, I represent your long-awaited success. きみだって元の世界でこうやって魂を違う体に移そうとしていたんだろう?だったら僕は待望の成功例じゃないか。
Tumblr media
Tigr: We should get along. 仲良くしようよ。
Mithos: …Where is my sister? ……姉さまはどこだ。
Tumblr media
???: —Can you hear me, Mithos? ——聞こえるか、ミトス。
Tumblr media
Kratos: A child’s voice…? 子供の声……?
Mithos: It’s Mercuria. メルクリアだ。
Mercuria: That’s right. Ahaha! You haven’t forgotten my voice, then! Excellent. そうじゃ。あはは!わらわの声忘れたわけではないのだな!よかったぞ。
Mithos: Mercuria! Where are you!? メルクリア!どこにいる!?
Mercuria: I thought you were looking for someone else? 捜しているのはわらわではないだろう?
Tumblr media
Mithos: This isn't a joke! ふざけるっ!
Mercuria: Mithos…you’ve really let me down. You and I are the same. That’s why I exoflected Martel into this world for you. ミトス……。わらわを失望させてくれるな。そなたはわらわと同じじゃ。だからこそマーテルを具現化してやったのではないか。
Mithos: And I told you not to involve my sister in any of your nonsense! お前たちのくだらない計画に姉さまを巻き込むなと言っただろう!
Mercuria: Tigr, explain it to him. チーグル。説明してやれ。
Tumblr media
Tigr: Yes, Lady Mercuria. Mithos, the great wish of His Majesty Demitrius is for the goddess to return to this realm. はい、メルクリア様。ミトス、神降ろしはデミトリアス陛下の大願なんだよ。
Tigr: After that, when all is said and done, the goddess will be returned elsewhere. 何、全て終われば、神はまたいずこかへお戻りになる。
Mithos: There’s no difference between your Living Doll project and my possession project. I will never forgive you if you erase Martel’s heart! 神降ろしだろうと何だろうとやることはリビングドールと変わらない。姉さまの心を消すなんて許さない!
Tigr: I haven’t erased it, Mithos. The heart core—I’ve managed to extract it without breaking it. 消さないよ、ミトス。心核——心の物質化に成功したんだ。壊さずに取り出す。
Tumblr media
Tigr: But, if we go against Lady Mercuria’s will here, she says that she will immediately retrieve Martel’s heart core…and destroy it. でも、もしもここでメルクリア様の意思に背くなら、メルクリア様は今すぐ心核を取り出して壊す……と仰っている。
Mithos: !!
Tumblr media
Sync: …So that’s their angle. ……そういうことか。
Tumblr media
Kratos: Mithos… ミトス……。
Tigr: I’ll see it is done. Now, prove to me that you have no intention of rebelling any further. 僕が見届けてあげるよ。反逆の意思がないことを見せてくれ。
Mithos: —Kratos. ——クラトス。
Kratos: If you think you have to, so be it. But, even so, I still want to protect you and your sister this time. お前がそうせねばならぬと言うならそれでもいい。だが、それでも私は今度こそお前たち姉弟を守りたい。
Tumblr media
Mithos: …Tch! …………っ!
[ Mithos attacks Kratos, Sync intervenes and runs between them ]
Tumblr media
Sync: What are you, brain dead!? You should have at least avoided his attack! アンタ、馬鹿か!?少しは攻撃を避けてよね!
Mithos: …Get out of my way. ……邪魔をするな。
Sync: I’ll get in trouble if this idiot here dies. の馬鹿に死なれるとこっちが困るんだよ。
[ Kratos stands up ]
Sync: Kratos, what do you think Lloyd will do if he finds out you died here? クラトス。アンタがここで死んだらロイドはどうすると思う。
Tumblr media
Kratos: Lloyd is a reasonable man. ロイドはものの道理がわかる男だ。
Sync: He might be—if he doesn’t hear a distorted version of your death. I pride myself on that kind of manipulation. 歪んだ情報に触れなきゃそうかもね。ボク、そういう操作は得意なんだけど。
Sync: If you don’t want Lloyd to fight this guy, maybe you should fight him yourself? こいつとロイドを戦わせたくなかったらしっかり戦ってくれない?
Sync: I’m the one who will get yelled at if our annoying houseguest gets hurt. You want to die? Die on your own time. 客分傷つけてうるさく言われるのはボクなんだ。死ぬなら勝手にのたれ死んでよ。
Tumblr media
Mithos: …Kratos has a weakness for that boy. Fine. I’ll just make sure I kill you both! ……クラトスはあの女の子供に弱いからね。いいよ。ボクも本気で殺しにいくから!

A pair of bracers that I no longer own. I made them for my wife and I don't have that anymore either. 🤣🤣 My own design and I think they look cool, but in hindsight, rather pointy on the hand. I've updated the design since then and that'll come later. The tooling design is *not* of my making. Got it off the interweb tubes.

okay i slept on it and i think the summary of what i feel was wrong with tri really is "this is misery porn"
like, of all the new characters introduced (daigo, himekawa, meiko, meicoomon), all of them needlessly suffer to a degree the legacy cast isn't really allowed to feel (at least not genuinely to me, since we know the epilogue is canon--- the fakeout in movie 5 never could have worked)
and like, by the end of the movies literally only one of them is left alive because the others all die horrible, horrible deaths???
i don't necessarily need all of them to survive, but i do think that their deaths feel cheap, narratively speaking, and compounded with tri's obsession with mentioning other things without entirely thinking about the consequences (yggdrasil, apocalymon, the dark masters, the four holy beasts, the quantum sea, reboots in general, oh look it's the digimon emperor!, etc.), it makes the experience feel a lot less pleasant to rewatch.
i do recall enjoying tri when it was coming out, but that was as it was coming out. the fact it doesn't hold up when you know what happens is frustrating to me.
ouagh, anyways, i think i'm almost done talking about tri, but i did try to go into the tag and look for any previously existing commentary. i could not find any that easily (tumblr really gets mad at you when you scroll past so many gifs), so if you're someone who likes tri in any way, i'm inviting you to come into my ask box or reblog this post with things you did like about tri that i may have missed.
i did enjoy enough of tri that i really want to hear what folks who like it saw in the movies. while a lot of my liveblogs were bitching about the movies, it's a lot easier to verbally complain about things that frustrate me than it is for me to vocalize the lots of little things that i did like about tri.
i know i vocalized how much i enjoyed izzy and sora's characterization in loss, but i barely spoke any about the second and third movies (i think? idk i literally just sat down and enjoyed those two movies for the most part) because i was too busy just enjoying the silly shenanigans. the school festival and hot spring stuff may come across as "filler" (air quotes because genuinely what the fuck does that mean these days?), and maybe they could have better spent that time fleshing out parts of the plot that they really should have let bake a little longer, but also??? if we didn't have those scenes, idk if i would have been so fucking pissed about the hand bandai dealt meiko and meicoomon.

Are you celebrating Christmas or Yule?
Tumblr media
Are you a new pagan who's confused what the difference is between Yule and Christmas and wondering what you should be celebrating or how?
Hopefully, this post will answer all your questions and you are likely to find that you are already celebrating Yule without even realising it.
Yule: The Ancient Winter Festival
Yule is an ancient winter festival celebrated by various cultures and peoples throughout history, especially in northern Europe (Germanic peoples, such as the Anglo-Saxons, the Franks, and the Norse). Traditions followed the wheel of the year and Yule is associated with one of the biggest events the winter solstice. The shortest day and longest night of the year, which usually falls around December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Yule marks the end of the dark half of the year and the beginning of the light half, symbolizing the rebirth of the sun and the hope for a new year. Some scholars have suggested that Yule may have been influenced by the Roman festival of Saturnalia, which was also held in late December and involved feasting, gift-giving, and social equality (The nobles and servants would switch places for a feast). The word Yule comes from the Old English geol, which may have derived from the Old Norse jól
The original 12 days of Christmas
Not satisfied with a single day of celebration the pagan festival of Yule lasts for 12 days. That’s a full  12 days of feasting, joy and merriment to really say goodbye to winter and hello to the coming season. Traditions vary from region to region, but a lot of those below will seem amazing familiar as we still do them today.
The Traditions of Yule
Yule was a time of joy and fun, as well as reverence and sacrifice. People gather around bonfires, candles, and hearths to keep warm and to honour their deities. They would also decorate their homes with evergreen branches, such as holly, mistletoe, and fir, to symbolize life, fertility, and protection. See if you can recognise some of these common Yule traditions:
The Yule Log: A large hardwood log, usually oak or ash, that was burned on the first night of Yule and kept burning for the full 12 days. The log was believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and health to the household. Some people would carve runes or symbols on the log, or sprinkle it with salt, wine, or herbs to enhance its magical properties. Today, you will find the Yule log in the form of a Swiss roll decorated to look like a log. If you have an open fire you can easily follow this tradition if you aren't into cake.
The Yule Tree: A tree, usually an evergreen, that was brought indoors and decorated with natural ornaments, such as fruits, nuts, berries, and candles. The tree represented the World Tree (Yggdrasil) or the Tree of Life, a cosmic axis that connected the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. The tree was also a gift to the spirits and the animals, who were invited to share its bounty. I bet there is nobody still reading this post, thank you for getting this far by the way, who doesn't have a Yule Tree (under the guise of a Christmas tree).
The Yule Feast: A lavish meal that was prepared and shared with family, friends, and neighbours. The feast included various dishes made from seasonal ingredients, such as roasted meat, bread, cheese, pies, cakes, and ale. The feast was also a way of honouring the gods and goddesses, especially Odin, the All-Father, who was said to lead the Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession of the dead, across the sky during Yule. Now we have Christmas dinner as the main feast, boxing day for the gammon or cold cuts and usually, for most, some celebration for the new year, which occurs at the end of the period.
The Yule Gifts: A tradition of exchanging presents with loved ones, usually on the last day of Yule. The gifts were often handmade, such as crafts, jewellery, clothing, or toys. The gifts were meant to express gratitude, affection, and generosity, as well as to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. Yes giving gifts is a pagan tradition not a Christmas one. Christianity frowned upon the practice as immoral.
The Yule Candles: Candles played a big role in Yule celebrations. Similar to the Hindu celebration of Diwali, candles were seen to banish the darkness and provide protection through the darkest day of the calendar. Today, you'll still find candles everywhere in normal practice. Ironically a standard 25 day Christmas candle still covers the period of the winter solstice so you may have been celebrating this element without knowing it.
A Yule Wreath: The word comes from the Old English "whithan" meaning to twist but the Wreath has been a part of the Yule celebrations for centuries with strong links back to the roman celebration of  Saturnalia and even Ancient Greek traditions. It made an easy way to bring the evergreens into the house. These were seen as having the power to overcome the power of death that causes winter to defeat other trees and plants. Holly was common as the spiky leaves were thought to also ward off evil. Some traditions had the wreath placed over the hearth to protect the home others on the front door to ward off evil. This tradition is still going strong today.
So why do we celebrate Christmas?
The Bible makes no mention of when Jesus was born. Few early Christians celebrated Christmas and those that did, had no idea when to do it. The most common dates were 6th Jan, 25th March and 19th of April. Most of these led by the shepherds tending their flock, pointing towards lambing season in spring.  The Winter Solstice, however, was a major fun event and acted as a blocker to converting people to the new religion, seen as a bit stuffy and restrictive. So the Christmas story was born to aid conversion.
With the spread of Christianity, Yule was gradually replaced or assimilated by Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Many of the customs and symbols of Yule were adopted or adapted by the Christians, such as the use of evergreens, candles, and gift-giving.
This is not a secret; Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan party in 1644 banned Christmas and Easter as pagan festivals that corrupted the true meaning of Christianity and encouraged immoral behaviour. The same is true of early American settlers who were also Puritans, who even imposed fines. The ban was not popular in england and riots broke out leading to a return to traditional practice in 1660 when King Charles II regained the throne. However, things took longer over the pond, with Congress only formally creating a legal holiday for Christmas in 1870.
Yule today
In modern times, Yule is still celebrated by various practices from paganism, Witchcraft, Wicca, Druidry, Asatru, or Heathenry. We seek to revive and reinterpret the ancient traditions of Yule, as well as to honour the natural cycles of the seasons and the elements. Yule is also celebrated by some people who are not necessarily pagan but who appreciate the cultural and historical aspects of the festival or who simply enjoy its festive and cosy atmosphere it creates "That Christmas feeling" is actually "That Yule feeling".

Honestly, I could write essays about how much Belial and Seofon are foils in my mind, they have a bunch of things in common, but their motivations and core philosophies end up being vastly different. It's very fun to think about (for me)
I can see him trying to drag her on some sort of tanabata festival instead, to distract her from all that, they can wear yukata and wish for rare swords, but she ends up organizing a little party for him regardless. With a cake she left in the oven for slightly too long, but you can cover that up with some frosting, easy. Nobody will be able to tell. Certainly not the man who claimed to have been a chef in a previous life. And heck, even if he notices (he does), why would he complain, she baked him a cake
I believe in Cammy! I believe in one of her new friends telling her about it. She should totally form a book club with Lamouralla and her other friends and read romance stories together btw. That would be a great way to discover the power of a coquettish pout, methinks
They really do! I think I first noticed it when doing his first uncap episode, where he manages to get Djeeta wrapped around his finger so easily. He even brought her favorite snack, the nefarious fiend! (Going from Yggdrasil's fate eps, I'd assume cheese fries?) Even Belial hasn't gone that far yet.
That is the cutest date ever, Seofon is so lucky to have you and your Djeeta!! He has no cause to complain, especially not after having seen Djeeta in a yukata and eating a (burnt) cake she baked herself, for him. ;v;
!! Oh! Of Cammy's friend group, her fellow librarian Lettie could tell her about The Power of Pouts too. Lamouralla joining in the coaching (and the reading!) would be so adorable though! All of them mooning over or critiquing the couples, discovering new favorite authors, Belial inwardly writhing now and then as they read his newbie work without knowing...
(And then when Cammy tries pouting at him on purpose he turns into the picture of concern. "Did another character die, Cammy? :( There, there, the plot can't hurt them anymore.")

❝ ☆ — MISCELLANEOUS / i.
☆ — by default ( unless otherwise stated ): kratos main attire is his prima stella ensemble from tales of festival. to fully human / non-supernatural and/or non-fantasy aligned muses his attire appears a simple black long sleeve top, slim fit black slacks, brown belt, and matching brown boots. flemberge is often at his hip, in a black sheath but regular people cannot see it as he has a concealment spell placed upon it. he is also not a mercenary unless he tells you such, he often refers to himself as just a really old man nowadays.
☆ — noishe is still with him on a near constant basis, within the past thousand years have the pair gained the ability to communicate via teleplay, given that noishe reached his next stage in his evolution guided by mana, into that of a human child who will grow up to fight evil and defend aselia, he sometimes, if rarely makes guest appearances!
☆ —he wears a golden locket that he keeps kept tucked inside his shirt, it contains a picture of himself, anna irving, and lloyd irving when the lather was an infant and still in his care. he gave lloyd a similar one, it was white gold/silvery and the counterpart to his, that anna once wore.
☆ — kratos has attained the power of god, if your muse is from aselia he will know their name and various basic miscellaneous facts about them ( he is the one true god of aselia ): kratos has become omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotient when it comes to those from aselia, he will not know things of muses that come from other world’s and he cannot know everything of something that was born before he was live or the summon spirits ( noishe is a great example, he does not know his origin, but knows he's been around since aselia was created ).
☆ — he is extremely powerful: in both swordplay and magic usage, he is unmatched by all. when it comes to battle experience– there are very few that can be a sliver of his strength– do not challenge him to a battle, while he does not fight much anymore… unless your muse is a god-themselves or something akin to a god… they will not win.
☆ — kratos loves children ! he travels a lot, going around the world and aiding those whom need assistance. he frequently goes to orphanage and tells them various stories ( which are moreso tweaked editions of the journey of regeneration and other tales ) they affectionately call him ‘unc kratos’
☆ — there is a new world religion, still the goddess martel is worshipped… but he has tweaked it heavily ( kharlan stuff / mithos is a half-elf / journey of regeneration is included / etcetc ): with this new religion comes two countries ( sylverant and tethealla ): each is lead by the descendants of the chosen ( lloyd/colette and zelos/sheena ): the two heirs are still known as ‘chosen’ but it is a superficial title and on the dawn of their sixteenth birthday, they make a journey to the world tree, yggdrasil and offer a prayer ( which is actually a tweaked version of the intro kratos says in tales of symphonia ).
☆ — after a few generations, the two kingdoms birth heirs that fall in love and marry ( the two kingdoms become a conjoined power and this reunite the kingdoms under one unified power ): however, there are still other small countries and territories ( such as mizuho/ninja village, the city of half-elves: welgiga, the city of elves: heimdall, and iselia is the capital…and is where the royal family lives. )
☆ — the people of mizuho act as guardians to the royal family, when a ninja reaches age three they begin training and by age five they nearly live full full time with the heir. if there is ever a case of a multiple birth, the heirs are both called ‘chosen’ does not matter who is born first, they’ll end up doing a dual-ruling ( as the title is for formalities anyways ).
☆ — he speaks with the spirits of martel and mithos (iniquitousideals, semi hiatus) when he visits the world tree. for a combination of general advice and just for keeping communication with two of his most treasured friends... yuan remains as the guardian (guardianofmana, hiatus)
☆ — he is a 'jack of all trades but also a master of plenty', so to speak. kratos is highly adept at sewing, chopping wood, hunting, setting up camp sites, using tools, sword fighting, and a variety of other useful things, such as operation and repair of machines. much of it is due to his incredible age, the other due to his interest in technical writing and the desire to truly understand how and why something works.
☆ — kratos likes history ( outside of being an ancient living relic himself ): and has read many books on the subject. he also likes ballads and epics, as well as books that teach you how to do things. no matter how long he lives, he is extremely open-minded in continually learning new things.

Digimon Story: Lost Evolution #2
Okay, so it's been a day since I actually played this so this might only mostly be accurate, but here's the story so far and what I think of it. My thoughts are in blue Okay so you're at a festival with your friends and you see a shooting star land in the woods. You all go out to investigate and find an orange dinosaur next to a spaceship. Three weirdos pop out of the spaceship and make you fight your new orange dinosaur against their poop monster who has depression. They go to leave and abduct you by accident, leaving you stranded in the Digital world. The weirdos names are Uno, Dos, and Tres here they are:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The character designers did not like Uno or Dos as much as they did Tres.
Okay so I went into the game with a positive mindset. I'm pretty excited to finally be playing this game because it's a fan translation project for a game series I really love that I've been following since I was in middle school. That's why I feel bad that most of what I have to say early on is so negative. The opening is okay. Plenty of Digimon starts with an underdog being thrown into an unfamiliar location (usually the Digital World) with no support network. However, all of my favorite entries in the series break from this trend, and this is not an exception so far.
Alright, so we fell out of the ship on accident, but the smaller children aren't with us so we need to find out where the ship went and rescue them. Eventually I stumble on a digitown and the Digimon there promise to help fix up a ship so we can go and get the kids. They send me out to find some parts from the crashed ship nearby and I fight Uno Dos and Tres again near their crashed Digiship. They reveal that they are beings known as 'Selectors' who select Digimon that will be moved to the next world in a process that they are calling defragmenting. Back at Digitown we see in action what happens to Digimon who aren't selected. They are delt with by the Erasers. Selectors select. Erasers erase. In a cutscene we watch as the Erasers erase a sukamon, numemon, and geremon, but leave unharmed a gatomon, terriermon, and renamon. When we get there we fight the erasers to get them to go away, and find that they've trashed the place including the Digivolution Tree. The Digivolution Tree defines what Digimon can digivolve into what Digimon. It's kind of meta. The erasers have destroyed about half the tree, and when a digimon is no longer in the tree, and all living members have been erased that digimon is effectively extinct. Okay, so it's becoming clear why the game is called what it is by this point. Digimon evolutions are lost, I have to restore them. Stop Yggdrasil or King Drasil, or by some small miracle a different bad guy in this series from deleting the Digimon they don't like. It feels a lot like a twist on the plot of Digital Monster: X Evolution so I am betting on Yggdrasil being behind this, but I haven't seen a royal knight yet so there's hope! And hey about that 'digimon they dont' like' bit, because that does seem to be what's going on, right? I highlighted the digimon erased/selected in green earlier. The ones being deleted are three ugly poop digimon from the beginning of the franchise. The ones being preserved are all fluffy cute ones. Geremon, Sukamon, Numemon (erase on sight)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terriermon, Renamon, Gatomon (keep they too precious uwu)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So like that would be really cool, right? I'm reaching a bit, but if the plot of this game is a meta thing about how the main villian (executies) wants to fix the digital world (digimon franchise) by removing the lame/stinky/ugly Digimon then that's really cool actually, and I really hope that's the direction this is going! But like. If that's your message. Why did you start me with Agumon?

The Great Freeze
In the center of the Cycle of Reality there is always a cataclysmic Ice Age that traps magic deep beneath the earth and locked away in frozen wastes of the north and south poles. The triggering event of the Great Freeze varies wildly from Cycle to Cycle, from the death of the Summer Queen at the hands of reckless adventurers to the release of an ancient frost magic beyond anyone's control.
Regardless of what causes the Freeze it has a few consistent effects: the fading of magic, the diminishment of immortals, the shortening of life spans, the fall of the great Mageocracies, and lastly Severing the Material Plane from the Roots of Yggdrasil. It is this final effect that would sow the most harm within the world as it prevented most gods from touching the plane, stopped souls from passing into their afterlives, and prevented reincarnation of souls back into the world.
In the following millennia the world is left to recover largely without the aid of magic or the gods. There were a few isolated incidents where magic seeped out prematurely (such as a glacier beaching itself near a town and thawing magic into the townsfolk, or a well dug too deep pouring forth enchanted water) but for the most part it was a slow reintegration before the Arcane Renaissance.
To celebrate the final end of Great Freeze many cultures across Istoriah hold festivals and holidays on the first days of spring such as; the Last Hearth Festival, the New Dawn Celebration, or Thawtide (which closely resembles Christmas in our world).

WIP Intro : The Lost Princess of Yggdrasil ☆.。.:*
♥ genre: fantasy, adventure
♥  tropes:
chosen one, reluctant hero, lost princess, found family, reincarnation, child soldier, childhood friends to lovers, morally grey antagonist, dragons (!!!)
♥ status: heavy revising and re-writing!
♥ type: book 1 of a trilogy
♥ themes:
the weight & consequences of choice, religious undertones exploring duty v. free-will, healing and growing from trauma, chosen family is as important as blood family, the gods are flawed and human at their core,
♥ can be read : here !
♥ synopsis:
Nobody knows with certainty what happened on the dawn of the princess's sixth birthday. One moment the peace bustled with excitement for the day's festivities, the other saw the kingdom devoured by azure flames. Some say it'd been a long time coming for the winged elves' vanity in trying to protect the gods from the spite of their creations, others blamed the young princess as a curse set loose upon a world that turned their backs on the divine. The flames died with a passing rain, and with it the gods' chosen people.
A decade in passing, the wounds left by the flames scarred and tragedy turned to song. Whispers of war plague the fragile peace at the eve of the Lunnaelian Empress's daughter's birthday, a figure of eyes ringed with silver at their center. The daughter of a king since forgotten returns to unite the remnants of the feathered children and claim that which is owed her by birthright. The fates of the self proclaimed empress and the mysterious princess, bound by blood, lay waiting in the forest dark and deep with its promises of an eternal sleep.

May Day special: Old Man of the Forest
~ ~
Our eighteenth Spring Vignettes piece celebrates May Day, on May 1st.
Before you read what the piece was intended to portray, share what it portrays to _you_. I’m just the artist; you’re the beholder.
~ ~
The 1st of May is celebrated across Europe as a special turning-point in the greening of the earth. Some traditions consider it the beginning of summer. Rich May Day traditions exist from west to east.
It is widely considered an ideal time for protective magic, love magic, and other sorts of petty magic and divination. It is said in Romania that one should wash one’s face with dew on May Day morning to preserve health and beauty.
May Eve, the night before May Day, is itself often celebrated with festivities and rituals; known as Walpurgisnacht in Germany, and coinciding with Beltane in the Gaelic countries. Bonfires are often lit on May Eve to ward away evils and misfortunes.
In the Germanic-speaking countries (such as England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia), the "maypole" (in German, "Maibaum"; in Dutch, "meiboom") is a fixture of May Day celebrations; a tall wooden pole or freshly-cut sapling, festively decorated, and erected in a public place to be danced around.
In some areas there is a tradition of competing with other towns to erect the tallest maypole. In Bavaria, towns try to steal each other's maypoles, which I think is very excellent.
Maypoles vary in design and construction. I've noticed that Scandinavian ones tend to be adorned with cross-beams and hanging rings, whereas German ones are often encircled by concentric rings; and maypoles hung with long trailing ribbons seem to be an English and Anglo-American characteristic. In Scandinavia it seems to be popular to wrap them in ivy, while in the mainland they often have barber-pole stripes.
I gave my maypole a mixture of characteristics, just to keep things ambiguous. I gave it a concentric ring, colorful trailing ribbons, and some tufty greenery on top; so there's no telling where the scene takes place.
I find it likely that the maypole is a continuation of the tree-worship practiced by various Germanic pagans, who are known to have venerated many sacred trees and poles as effigies of a great cosmic tree that unites the universe.
The Yggdrasil, just such a cosmic tree, is described in the Norse Eddas. Historians tell of how King Charlemagne, after reconquering the rebelling Saxons, had their sacred tree or pillar, the Irminsul, cut down, and forced them to become Christians. A sacred tree near Hesse called Donar's Oak was supposedly a center of worship for pagans in Germany until it was felled by St. Boniface and his followers. The great temple at Uppsala, Sweden, apparently one of the most holy sites for pagans in Scandinavia, was described as standing next to a great sacred tree of an unknown kind. Sacred trees and pillars are mentioned in quite early Roman accounts about Germanic tribes.
The ceremonial significance of trees, pillars, and poles dates far back in the Germanic traditions, and the continuing practice of raising them in the Germanic-speaking world is not surprising.
Tales are told in many places about some hairy, shaggy, leafy wild-man of the forest who guards the wild lands outside of human settlement; a protector of the wilderness, but also a friend to shepherds and other people of the wilds, if they are friends of the forest.
The Romans and Greeks of antiquity venerated a hairy forest-god who rules the wild creatures, a reclusive friend of herdsmen who frolics with the wood-nymphs in the deep wilds. The Greek god of the woods and wilds is Pan, often portrayed with the horns and legs of a goat. The equivalent Roman god is Faunus, lord of animals, to whom Sylvanus and Inuus were sometimes equated.
In the various Slavic traditions, there is a figure known by many names, one of which is the Leshy ("He of the forest", "Woodsy"; Russian Леший, Polish Leszy, Serbian Лешиј / Lešij). Those who frequent the forest may encounter him; and the result will depend on how one is held in his regard. He guides some, and leads others astray.
The Basques, the last enduring successors of Europe's ancient pre-Indo-European inhabitants, tell of the Basajaunak (singular Basajaun), a race of hairy wild-folk who sometimes aid shepherds in return for offerings of bread. It is said that humankind learned the secrets of farming, smithing, and building from them in ancient times.
The hairy wild woodwose is a figure often found in European heraldry. Such wildmen were a subject of much fascination in the Middle Ages. In the infamous Bal des Ardents, King Charles VI of France nearly burned to death when his highly flammable woodwose costume caught fire. The Green Knight in the tale of Sir Gawain is sometimes interpreted as a great green wild-man. The face or figure of a leafy "green man" can be found carved on a great many old churches, buildings, doorways, and ceiling-bosses.
In some parts of England, an old May Day tradition survives in which a person is dressed up in greenery to act as "Jack o' the Green", counterpart to the May Queen.
In the background of the piece, we see some maidens wreathed in flowers dancing around a maypole; and in the foreground, we see a tense encounter at the edge of the forest between a shepherd and an intimidating sylvan being. The looming forest-creature may look threatening; but are its intentions malevolent or benevolent?
Given how calm the lost sheep seems to be, my guess would be benevolent; but then, sheep aren’t very discerning creatures.
The border consists of ivy and wild roses. Most cultivars of domestic roses are immensely puffy and petally monstrosities, but roses in their wild form have only a single row of five petals. Roses are usually depicted this way in heraldry.

Lillywood Yggdrasil, otherwise known as the Earth King, surprises Kaito as he's gathering spirits for the Harvest Festival. As a thank-you for his acceptance of Isis and easing her loneliness, Lillywood offers Kaito a gift that had otherwise slipped through his fingers -- the fruit of the world tree. Her generosity, however, also comes with a warning: Beware of No Face, the Illusion King!

🙏 - Which pantheon(s) do you actively worship?
Several, though my primary worldview is Heathen, focused especially in Icelandic and Norwegian sources, though it includes some Continental and Ænglish sources.
🌞 - Which deity(ies) are you closest to/do you worship the most often?
Óðinn is the God I am closest to, followed by Freyja, Loki, and Their families.
✨ - Do you believe in patron deities? If so, do you have any that you know of?
Yes.
🌍 - Which pantheons do you believe exist?
It is perhaps easier to ask which I do not believe exist. I believe potentially all of them. I have no reason to doubt the Greek Gods exist (after all, I worship some of Them!) any more than the Heathen Gods. I believe the Christian God exists at the least as a separate God, though I may not believe the exclusivist truth claims made by the Christian religions.
📜 - Have you ever made an oath, vow, or contract with a deity? If yes, how did it go (you don't have to share)?
Yes. It has gone very well because it was well-negotiated, and it actively did my life immense good.
📿 - What are three things you're grateful to your deity(ies) for?
My family, my communities, and my life's path.
🖋️ - If you could say anything to your deity(ies) right now, what would you most want to say?
Thank you for my family, my communities, and my life's path.
💌 - What is your favorite form of deity communication?
Direct communication through prayer or talking.
🎭 - What is an emotionally impactful or a silly worship-related experience you've had?
When Óðinn had me initiated with Him and to the Runevættir in a Nine Day Hanging on Yggdrasil.
❤️ - What's one memory of your practice that you reflect the most fondly on?
Night prayers with my family. They are a touchstone for all of us, and they are simple ones each of us can engage with.
🥂 - What is your favorite devotional act or offering to give?
I deeply enjoy writing prayers, whether for my own Gods or others'.
🎉 - Do you celebrate any festivals? If so, which ones?
When I do, I tend to celebrate Heathen or general Pagan festivals.
🫂 - Do you syncretize any pantheons with one another? If so, which ones?
Not at present.
🔮 - Do you delve into topics like the occult or the mysteries? Do you do anything esoteric?
My life is suffused by the esoteric.
⭐ - What is something you wish people outside your practice knew more about?
The basics of polytheist and animist theology.
📖 - Do you like the way your pantheon is most often portrayed in media? Why or why not?
Eh, it can be good in some cases and not in others. I'd say Marvel is okay-ish, though I find Óðinn in American Gods is close at times to how I understand Him.
🏛️ - Do you have a favorite statue or temple to your deity(ies)? If yes, what is it?
Yes, my Óðinn statue by Paul Borda.
🔥 - Do you have a favorite myth or tale from your pantheon or others?
The Hávamál and the gaining of the Runes by Óðinn.
🧭 - What led you to your practice?
I got grabbed up by Óðinn during a Gods-guided meditation.
🧿 - Did you have any other spiritual beliefs before discovering your current practice?
Yes. I am a former Catholic, and was quite devout during my time.
🪽 - Do you believe in angels and/or demons? If yes, do you worship or work with any?
Yes. It has been a while since I worked with angels, though I have never had cause to work with demons.
🪄 - Do you practice witchcraft? If yes, do you keep it separate from your deity worship?
Yes, I practice seiðr in a variety of forms, and spá. It is not separate from my deity worship, as Freyja brought me to them and had me learn them.
🪦 - Do ancestors or human spirits play a big role in your practice?
Absolutely. Ancestor worship and work is a big part of my Heathen religion, and esoteric work as well.
🐾 - Do animal spirits play a big role in your practice?
Yes. I have a variety of animalvættir I carry relationships with for a number of reasons.
🌱 - Does nature - plants, nature spirits, etc. - play a big role in your practice?
Yes. As with animalvættir, I carry a number of relationships here. I carry deeply felt, loved, and powerful relationships with the landvættir.
💀 - Do you believe in ghosts? If yes, have you ever had an experience with one?
Oh yes, and considering I live very close to a cemetery coming into contact with them is a semi-regular occurrence on that level alone.
☄️ - Do you believe in astral travel/the astral realm? If so, have you been there before?
Yes, having done the work and experienced the astral realm/plane. However, since becoming a Heathen I think of it more like hamfara, faring forth in Hamr form, rather than strictly an astral space/idea. In how I understand it now, the astral realm might be better understood as the place betwixt and between the Worlds, whether we are talking the various Underworlds, Middle Worlds, Upper Worlds, etc.
