Keri Wallace is the founder & guide at Girls on Hills, the UK’s only trail, fell and skyrunning company for women. After her second child, Keri decided to quit the desk-job and find a way to combine her passion for mountain running with flexible working, so that she could fulfil a life goal and be mum to two toddlers at the same time.  

Keri in her own words: 

“I started Girls on Hills with my colleague Nancy Kennedy in 2013, as a way to encourage more women to try trail and fell running. It was a terrifying leap of faith and a dream-come-true rolled into one. It felt like the opposite of a mid-life crisis though; like I’d finally found the confidence to stand up and do something I should have done a long time ago. But I had no idea whether it would take off!  

We only ran a handful of courses the first year but it soon became clear that there was a real appetite out there for the kind of freedom and empowerment that comes with this type of running – across all ability levels.   

I love guiding women around the rocky hills of Glencoe, helping them build the confidence and skills they need to become more independent in the mountains (usually a simple case of revealing how much they are already capable of!) Mountain running is such a multi-faceted sport, with benefits that reach out and touch all other areas of your life.        

As Girls on Hills has grown over the years, we have learned more about the barriers that many women face, across all levels of our sport, from beginner access, right through to elite-level racing. Today we advocate strongly for equity and inclusivity and seek to increase female participation in technical and ultra-distance events, where the gender gap is greatest.”

It’s 11:25am and I’m catching up on my diary. I didn’t do an entry yesterday because I was so tired mentally and physically from my long run. I was up and out early as I knew it would be a long day and Claire had warned me it was going to get warm. I parked at my usual spot near the Hare and Hounds and felt something wet on the side of my face. I had a nose bleed, a bad one. The blood was pouring…

Hey! Piggybacking off the previous ask: I would be desperately curious to hear some of your thoughts on Ash’abah cuisine! I also seem to recall you posting once about how the foods of Craglorn and interior Hammerfell might differentiate from foods along the coast, but I can’t seem to find it. Could potentially be related topics? Most bustling cities in Hammerfell seem to be along the coast, and I don’t imagine they’d want Ash’abah pariah tribes just hanging around, so idk. It’s a thought!

You are correct that the nomadic Ash’abah are primarily at home deeper in the northern Hammerfell deserts. This is partially because of the posher coastal folk making their disdain known to the group, and partially because, in the words of a member of an Ash'abah group I stayed with for a few weeks, they are at home in the desert.

In a similar vein to Ashlanders in Morrowind, Ash'abah cuisine is shaped by the hostile environments they inhabit, and are therefore unique from urban Redguard fare. While trade with wandering merchants is certainly arranged in order to obtain essential ingredients like spices, grains, and oils, it isn't relied on as the backbone of Ash'abah food.

The traditional Ash'abah diet is somewhat restricted due to the scarcity of the Alik'r, yet through generations of shared knowledge, they have learned to harvest the bounty of the sands. Dunerippers; lizards; giant scorpions, snakes, and spiders; wild goats and camels; rodents, and birds like fellrunners all have edible components, if you know how to cook them! Aloe and cactus are also popular, refreshing inclusions in food to make up for the lack of vegetation.

At the end of my time with the Ash'abah, we sought and gained shelter at a johad and shared a feast the night before my departure. Every other person in the group contributed a dish, meaning we had quite a spread! Jerboa grilled in giant wasp honey; cous cous salad with cactus chunks; sand-baked duneripper shank; barbecued lizard skewers; giant snake steaks cooked in black garlic and camel fat; whole fellrunner roasted on a spit with chili goat's butter, and a rich and spicy scorpion tail soup with wheat flatbread were the main dishes on offer. To end the meal, we had a chilled aloe pudding, made with goat's cream, cardamom, giant snake egg, and a good heap of sweetened aloe pulp. ~Talviel

Did You Know: Fellrunners are harmless? They are also incapable of flying or swimming, and are not the best at running. Additionally, they are easily scared, which makes them easy to trip over.

“Dog Inside a Car” by Fell Runner

Fell Runner is a Los Angeles-based rock band formed in 2012 by four music students at the California Institute of the Arts. The band originally started as an independent study in applying West African rhythms to western song forms. 

Fell Runner's music is asymmetrically rhythmic while simultaneously melodic and danceable with layers of vocal harmonies and interlocking guitar parts. A band consisting of diverse musicians (current/previous members of HAIM, Harriet, The Americans), Fell Runner brings a wide range of influences to its music placing emphasis on energetic live shows.

In the past three years, the band has been actively performing in Los Angeles and on the West Coast at venues ranging from intimate house shows to notable venues such as The Troubadour, The Echo, The Bootleg Theater, Colombia City Theater, and The New Parrish.  Fell Runner released their self-titled debut CD on Los Angeles-based label, Orenda Records, on August 18th.
