But er, some earlier agents had been a bit trigger happy, which meant the entities were well... aggressive. May I ask for some details about your Tav? What do you mean by hasnt really lived as a tiefling before? Like literally has never seen another tiefling? Seems like being abducted by the mindflayers introduced major life changes to your Tav

I'm sorry this took so long to answer, but I ended up doing a whole bunch of art to answer this!

Ember has a really extensive backstory that's kind of long, but the short version of it is: she was caught in the crossfire of a deal her parents made with a devil. They couldn't have a child of their own because her mother was too severely ill, so they made the deal in the hopes of returning her health and along with it the ability to bear children. Unfortunately devil deals being what they are, they ended up with Ember who the devil stole from her birth parents.

Her mom was a high elf and her dad a half-elf, and her mom's side of the family were quite vocally anti-Tiefling. Because of her mother's health problems, however, they couldn't just sever contact with her parents because they relied on their money to cover the cost of healers, expensive potion ingredients and the like. They couldn't be trusted not to be a threat to Ember though, so the decision was made to disguise her as their biological daughter throughout her childhood.

As a result, Ember didn't even know she was a Tiefling until she was around 4 or 5, when she began to present as a sorcerer and accidentally undid the disguise spell (she ends up a bard thanks to her mom, but her control of magic comes from sorcery).

Before the events of the game, the most time she ever spent as a Tiefling was when she was 13- when her mom died and her dad disappeared, the disguise spell having relied on her mum's magic. She went through hell for a while after that and as soon as she could learn how to cast the spell herself, she jumped at the chance and went back to living as her old half-elf self. So when she gets taken by the Nautiloid, it's her being forced to actually live as her real self and as a Tiefling for the first time. As a result she doesn't have great control over her tail, because she's just straight up not used to having one.

She also spends a lot of Act 1 jumpscaring herself whenever she walks by a mirror lmao.

I do plan to do some comics that are set earlier in the game at some point, and those ones will explore more of her backstory. What I've done so far has just happened to be set in Act 3, after she's already sorted a lot of her shit out. I just have no idea when that'll actually be!

4. What were your hero characters like before being turned into Pokemon? What did they look like and how were their lives? Do they ever recover any of their memories?

I'll be honest, I haven't thought about this question all too much, so the content here is somewhat subject to change!

(Gonna be excluding Explorers hero in this discussion cause they technically have a canon backstory set in the future and I haven't delved much into that—other folks have though and it's a super neat train of thought!)

I think each of my PMD hero characters probably entered the Pokemon world at different ages; Arcas and Brooke probably got yoinked in the early-teens, but Reese being PSMD Hero is kiiiinda up in the air if we're going with the story's canon (in these doodles she's about the age of the other Serene Village kids though, if not just a little older!)

One funny idea I had for Arcas was just that he was a Team Skull delinquent, but his rather dry humor and lack of expressions probably didn't change that much after getting turned into a Pokemon. Likely got more and more scraps of his old memories back, but overall it doesn't bother him much!

Brooke remembers all of her old life (GTI Hero is actually the only protagonist out of the entire franchise that canonically doesn't have amnesia), and she does not miss it at all—getting turned into a Pokemon probably helped her if anything!

Reese unfortunately kinda ends up in the same boat as Explorers Hero; the game's plot gives them a set backstory that I haven't thought about too much—but I do think she gradually pieces more and more of her amnesia together! it's probably pretty bittersweet?

sorry to keep bitching about frustrating rain world fandom trends, but I think if you read downpour as a pure "being alive is good, actually" metaphor with a weird dissonant twist at the end (saint's campaign), that ... reveals a shockingly surface-level reading of the story that ignores every interesting question the game poses in favor of trying to force a comfortable, one-note moral that only actually works if you ignore a significant amount of canon.

like, I'm sorry, but there's no way to in good faith pry a straight answer out of this story. I know fandom tumblr is a hotspot for disillusioned former christians, and stories about how religion isn't all it's chalked up to be are comforting for many, but this simply is not that kind of story. if that's your takeaway from it - that the world the game presents is worth sticking with, that ascension isn't the right choice - that makes sense, it's a valid personal opinion to come away with. however, to argue that the void sea endings are objectively the "bad" endings, or that saint's campaign makes no sense thematically, is to overlook a massively important reason why rain world works so well as a game in the first place: it's intended to be a choice.

saint's ascension ability is in YOUR hands. the game is asking you, the player, what you got out of this, what you think is best. it is asking you to reflect on the themes it's been trying to communicate to you for the last several dozen hours

(can you cope with a life that brings you more pain than joy? if there was another way to exist, would you choose to change? what would you give up to attempt another existence? everything? what if you're being fooled and you're chasing a terrible fate? what if powerful people are preying on your misery and it's all a scam? what is left of you when stripped of all things that cause pain? is it your true self? in a world without pain, what is even left? what if it's everything that means the most to you? what if you're going home? what if you could love without the fear of pain, loss, sickness, death? is the grand more important than the small? is it better to stick with familiar pain, or to chase something frightening that may ultimately make you happy? who can you trust to guide you? who will take advantage of you on the way there? what would get in your way? your own ego? your guilt? bitterness? love for the world you know, an ability to see beauty in the midst of tragedy? is this weakness or strength? etc etc etc don't even get me started on the commentary on religious institutions, classism, structural and familial abuse, and how this is all woven together)

like, I'm sorry, rain world is not a saturday morning cartoon trying to teach you life lessons, it's a piece of interactive fiction using game mechanics as a vehicle for some extremely interesting philosophical discussions, which it politely asks you to actively engage with as you go along. I'm sorry if that's uncomfortable to people who don't relate to those topics, but declaring bad writing on a piece of fiction for not presenting you with a clear-cut moral stance at the end that already aligns with your personal lived experience is just ... a godawful way to interact with stories.

(deliberately handwaving or ignoring major and obvious pieces of symbolism for the sake of declaring it a Good Story That Agrees With You, Actually frankly isn't much better. stop making me read analysis posts where half the story has to be a drug trip for your point to make sense)

Villain!Louie + Lakko au(s)

The villain!Louie + Lakko au is an au based off my Villain!Louie au, specifically taking place/starting after this moment.

To quickly explain what happened there : FOWL and the McDucks found themselves in another altercation, one that breaks out a fight. Someone with FOWL (probably Steelbeak idk) gets on a higher level and starts throwing objects towards the McDuck family as a way to steer them away and give FOWL the opportunity to get away from them. However, Louie is with them and starts shouting, telling them that he's still there and to not get him.

Next thing he knows, a large chunk of metal lodges its way through his chest. It doesn't take long before he coughs up blood and collapses to the ground. FOWL essentially abandons him, and the family quickly takes him to a hospital. Because of how severe his injury is, Louie has no choice but to stay put. The family takes him back to the Manor after he stays at the hospital for a few weeks. After a few more weeks, he officially meets Wakko, Dewey's best friend. The two have met before,,,by fighting. The family didn't want to fight him, and since Wakko had no emotional ties to him, it was a no-brainer.

At first, Louie is VERY closed off but soon finds it easy to talk to him. He didn't feel comfortable talking to his family after everything, so Wakko was really the only one he willingly communicated with. The two accidentally get a little too close before Louie runs back to FOWL.

Enter Lakko.

Several months after Louie returned to FOWL, Wakko gets a surprise knock at the door one night and is met with the sight of Louie holding an egg. Wakko barely gets a word in before Louie quickly hands the egg over and tells him that it's his. Louie begs Wakko to take the egg and raise it. Wakko tries to convince him to break away from FOWL so they can raise the kid together, but it falls on deaf ears. Louie leaves. Making Wakko a single father.

V1 : After abandoning his the egg with Wakko, Louie actively tries to forget and move on with his life. That is until two years later, at another altercation with the McDuck family, Wakko manages to corner Louie and tells him all about their daughter, Lakko. He even goes as far as showing him a picture of her. Louie, who was very hesitant on hearing Wakko out, immediately melts at the small toddler on Wakko's phone. He decides right then and there that he has to escape FOWL and be the father his daughter deserves. It takes him six YEARS to finally break away. Lakko is now eight years old. Her reaction to him is very similar to how Dewey's was to Della. Louie makes sure to take things super slow and bond with her in the way SHE wants.

V2 : Relatively the same up until the two year mark. Wakko doesn't tell Louie anything about Lakko.

Instead, Louie accidentally meets her when she sneaks onto a family adventure when she's 6-8 yrs old. She later learns that he was her father, that her father is a bad guy. She tries not to dwell on it too much. Then, one day, after several years, he shows up at their doorstep.

Lakko and Louie's relationship is VERY rocky in this version, especially at the beginning. It takes a long time before she accepts him, and Louie is accepting of that. It hurts, but he knows from a personal level how tough and painful it is to bond with a supposed "parent"

Did the cats who left our two protagonists get killed along their journey (possibly as some sort of divine retribution by Starclan for abandoning both an Elder and a Kit) or was that just a gameplay choice to explain why they never return or pop up again?

They were killed! In-game I just hit the auto-kill button for everyone who wasn't relevant and then spun the narrative. If I manage to keep these two alive, this blog should (hopefully) unravel the mystery of what killed them and why.
