McCall’s Meat & Fish Co, 3141 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039

McCall’s Meat & Fish Co. moved from Los Feliz to Atwater Village recently. I thought it was a meat/fish market – didn’t realize that it’s also a gourmet market with baked goods, sandwiches (premade, unfortunately), farmer’s market produce, and high end cheeses, meat, fresh fish, nuts, nut butter, ice cream, snacks, sauces, condiments, spices, beans, butter, eggs, yogurt, etc. They carry pasta, tomatoes, and olives from Italy. The fresh pasta is from Domenico’s. They also carry items from local producers, like Brothers dips, Jyan Isaac breads, and Sugarbloom pastries.

Sweet pepper turkey on Jyan Isaac ciabatta ($15) from the cold case. It’s made with Hobb’s roasted turkey, Manchego, sweet pepper relish, pickled red onion, arugula, Dijon, red wine vinegar evoo, salt, pepper. The sandwich was about 3 x 3 inches – not huge but made with higher quality ingredients. It was good – the bread was chewy, the Dijon super strong, the thinly sliced turkey tasted fresh. I was afraid that the pepper relish would be too sweet but all their sandwiches had a sweet spread (there were three kinds to choose from). The relish was on the sweeter side. The bread was chewy and firm.

Prices are high but where else are you going to get purple brussels sprouts ($10/lb), Eureka lemons, and Koginut squash? They seem to be the only place that has Black Arkansas apples right now.

The store is beautiful. Wish they had more prepared food and made to order sandwiches. Get a number if you need help.

Fun Tank fact!!

Tank has a lot of ‘ sweet grandchild ‘ energy with a lot of the mom and pops shops around town, if you bring him to a farmers market they will be crowed by older people talking to them like Tank is their own

I absolutely love shopping at farmer's markets. There's something so comforting about the atmosphere there, a feeling of being truly at home. I can picture myself leisurely wandering from stand to stand, inhaling the earthy aromas of fresh produce grown with care. I take my time, examining the vibrant fruits and vegetables, knowing they're picked at their peak. I delight in choosing a bouquet of fresh flowers or selecting jars of homemade jams and sauces, each one a labor of love. As I bring these treasures home, the satisfaction of cooking with such fresh ingredients fills me with joy, knowing I’m creating something nourishing and made with intention. It’s a truly rewarding experience.

Shop Local

I don’t eat eggs so I can’t comment on the price of them (other than to support your friends and community who have chickens!), but if I can walk to get my $22 worth of produce in 30 degrees in the winter, most people can certainly shop locally, especially if they have a car, and fight the system that we are living in. It just takes a little bit of research and creativity.

Here's the recipe I used for spiced lentils and carrots. I used a homemade vegetable stock with the veggie scraps I have been saving in my freezer!

roach can bake a nice batch of anyones favorite sweets; he makes the boys cakes for their birthdays themed around their interests 🍰🧁🎂 he doesn’t really like cooking and is just okay at it

soap has a professional range and uses it every day he can; he loves to cook and is really really good at it! he just strikes me as the kind of man who has a big stack of cook books in his kitchen and uses them all very frequently

Carla’s Fresh Market, 248 N Avenue 50, Los Angeles (Highland Park), CA 90042

Carla’s Fresh Market is a new neighborhood market that offers farmer’s market produce, local producers, pantry staples (pasta, rice, beans, sauces, condiments), snacks, and clean label producers. There’s also a coffee bar, fresh bread, fresh flowers, wine and beer, cold beverages, dairy, ice cream, yogurt, etc.

The space is large and attractive but it feels somewhat empty. Also, there’s a lack of signage – e.g., the bread in the case was not labeled.

What they carry is higher quality but you can get most of it at Cookbook Market, Sip Snack, and Tropicana Market. Does Highland Park really need another upscale neighborhood market? I noticed a lack of prepared foods. The ice cream and yogurt selection was decent but nothing special.

You guys make this whole wishing business sound so serious- It's gotten me all nervous. Not to mention- what if I word it wrong and it, I dunno, doesn't make me braver and just.... forces them to like me instead, or something?
