I'm an adult fiction author—fantasy and contemporary fantasy—and my debut fantasy releases May 28, 2024.

I initially got the idea for SOUL-BOUND in early April 2017, wanting to explore how a winged character would navigate their world without flight. But I didn't truly start writing it until January 2019 and now I'm finally pursuing publishing it!

Here's the gorgeous cover! Illustrated by the wonderful @oxiente, who has drawn Mika and Roshan a lot for me over the past few years. I'm really grateful that she took on this project. She delivered beyond my expectations! There are so many cute details! 🥺

PITCH

When a tsundere princess with healing magic loses her flight during her quest to heal corrupted crystal roots, she must depend on a charming vagabond's aid to help her before their avian world collapses to corruption.

SUMMARY

Avem, a continent inhabited by bird-like humans called Avians, consists of seven territories, each of which contains a crystal root: a treelike sanctuary preserving magic. Avians cannot wield the land’s magic themselves.

Except, Mika, the princess of Passíer. However, her father forbids her to use it out of concern for her safety.

Due to the expanding corruption from Cantio; a fallen territory under Passíer’s jurisdiction because of its damaged root, Zayn the militant king of Nyx, suggests Scorching Cantio. To avoid such a catastrophic outcome, Mika flees from home, determined to heal Cantio’s root herself.

In Cantio, she meets Roshan, a vagabond playing double agent to protect what’s left of his uncorrupted homelands. Upon noticing her pink feathers, unique for her specific species, he cautions her to leave before she’s captured and used as coin. She snubs his warning and is nearly taken captive.

During his efforts to help her, Roshan is wounded. Mika heals him with her magic, unintentionally and unknowingly bonding them together.

When the quest costs Mika’s wing and grounds her, she accepts Roshan’s offer to escort her across Avem to heal the damaged roots before corruption destroys their world.

The sad realization when writing about historical settings

Before I fell back into writing fanfictions, I wrote mainly originals, most of the time in Urban Fantasy or SciFi settings. And there is this one thing that I just did not have to think about.

But then came 2022, and I started mainly writing fanfiction again. And through a twist of fate my main fandoms ended up being medieval - both with fantasy worlds like the Forgotten Realms, and just the real normal medieval times (aka Castlevania).

It started when I was writing the Castlevania fics. Specifically the fics being set in winter. Because it was this very obvious thing.

I wrote about it last year: Over here in Germany, in the area where I am living, we did not have a real winter since 2006. 18 years ago. There are young adults, that can vote in the election next year, that will never have actually lived through a real winter. Sure, a couple of years back - in the winter of 2020/2021 - we actually had about several weeks of snow that remained. But outside of it? Sure, it will snow on a couple of days per winter, but the snow will be melted by the next morning.

But when writing the medieval setting, I realized at some point: "Wait. This was pre-climate change. In a mountainous area to boot. They will have impassable paths for weeks on end!" And it was kinda depressing.

But then there was the other realization. Imagining summer in this medieval setting. And I imagine. And then this little voice in my mind goes: "Add more insects."

I stop a beat: "What?"

"More insects. This is medieval. It was before we killed all the insects. There are insects everywhere. Beetles, and flies, and butterflies, and mosquitoes, and grasshoppers, and..."

I do remember those summers when I was a kid. When we drove in the car and the windshield was smashed with dead bugs. When I was running around through the forest and at times would accidentally breathe those bastards in.

And now I am thinking about that a lot, whenever I write those characters being outside. I do not always bring it in, but I think about it. About how nice it must be to live in a world that was not fucked over like that.

Sorry. I am depressed. I know. Fuck climate change. Fuck capitalism, I guess.

something way more compelling than tragic backstories imo is mortal flaws— an internal flaw so severe that it hinders them in moments of conflict, pushes them deeper into “rock bottom,” and changes their perception of themselves and the world around them. this isn’t a new concept at all but i love it so much… like, make your characters prideful, suspicious, optimistic, indifferent, loyal, etc to their own detriment. make them suffer because of their flaws— ones they may not even realize they have in the first place or deny having at all.

As a writer, I’m as hopelessly devoted to fantasy and horror as I am to romance. Most of my works explore themes of morality, feminism, and autonomy while sprinkling on as many gothic elements as I possibly can. I thrive in writing banter-filled, rivals-to-lovers dynamics, but am not incapable of indulging in a good, fluffy couple here and then — on top of giving the love interests claws and fangs, ahem.
