whatever i guess there’s discourse going on in the fandom abt who’s doing “fan” correctly, so ill just say i’m the only person on this earth who loves and understands anything deeply and meaningfully and everyone else is a poser. everything i say abt my faves is objectively correct and everything i say as a hater is also objectively correct. i have the best opinions and characterizations. i am the king of fandom.
#like if u don’t like what someone is doing just don’t read it lmfao like#fandom is a self curated space#there are plenty of takes that i think are stupid and lame and i DONT reblog or talk abt them or the authors#why is anyone screenshotting anyone else to talk shit abt them#if u think something is problematic that’s FINE#there are plenty of things i think are toxic and damaging to a reader or writers psyche#and i just…. don’t read them or reblog them and i move on#fandom is niche it’s like like we’re critiquing mainstream media#fandom subcultures are so small lol just don’t engage it’s whatever#i guess this is me subtweeting and vagueblogging abt it so i’m not even taking my own advice#do as i say and not as i do as my mother always used to say

if you see absolutely anything that has kabru in it. And are unable to stop yourself from making it about L/abru (even when Laios doesn’t even appear or is irrelevant to the content in question!) and reduce kabrus entire deuteragonist-level character into wanting to fuck laios. I’m stealing something out of your house!!!!!
disclaimer: If you ship l/abru and gaf about kabru and don’t do this then this post isn’t about you 🤓
#I love kabru so much but finding content of him is so painful bro I cant#Flames flames flames up the side of my face!#I constantly consider just nuking my account and forgetting I ever read or cared about dungeon meshi many times bc of this lol#I care him so much. More than I care about dungeon Meshi as a work as much as I respect it and it’s fun to create for#I can’t be normal about this genuinely I never get like this but I turn into A.M from I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream#Laios and kabrus connection is really sweet in the end and I don’t ship it but like the ship it’s so inoffensive in abstract just not for m#But in reality every day I get jumpscared by the things people are doing to my angel#Like just do laios self shipping that’s clearly what you daft cunts actually want why puppeteer kabru free my boy#I promised I would never post like this but like it really makes me so mad lol. And want to just go back to not looking up anything online#And I already specifically curate my experience to a crazy degree.#But the way that this fandom revolves around babying laios is crazy dude#Like every single thing is about poor poor laios#like he’s the main character but it’s insane even people who LIKE him have to put disclaimers when saying even jokey mean things#Because then 1000x idpol white autistic people will descend upon them otherwise#And I say this as an autistic person of colour it’s annoying asf lol I do not respect any of you! To put it mildly!#If the only way you can engage with characters or stories is through vectors which You can personally project onto and relate to#I’m doing a lot more than fucking stealing something out of your house!#It’s the most normal thing on earth to not like the main character of a series but I feel if you genuinely hated laios#And are not just “guilty” of criticising him or appreciating his flawed character. Then the legions of cornballs will descend on you#The only good spaces are small pockets of people engaging with each other together. The rest lol nuclear devastation#but I suppose that’s the nature of fandoms lol why complain about clowns at the circus 🚶#Like there’s literally characters whose main purpose in the story IS their relationship/dynamic with laios. Kabru is NOT JUST THAT!!#He is a deuteragonist!#Treat him like one!#Like why are people talking about labru on my freaking kaburin and kabushuro posts dude free me

people who absolutely hate crossovers and crossover shipping and shipping characters who barely/never interacted but the fan is interested in what their dynamic could look like, who hate any non-canon shipping are boring as fuck and really annoying when they have the need to go in the comments of these posts and be like "that's so weird why do people do that?" or start ranting how much they hate it
because they can and it's fun, dumbass so stop ruining other people's fun just because you don't like it
if it's not for you that's all cool and fine it's not for everyone but you can just scroll away or block such things you don't have to spread your negativity in the comments where others are just trying to have fun with other people who have the same interests. stop it. you're being the weird one here.
let people have fun in the fandom that's what fandoms are for!!
#when will people realize that they're the ones who curate their fandom experience and it's their job to organise what you see#and what you don't if you don't like it you have every right to block it and please do so if you really hate it so much#but it is nor other people's fucking problem and you have no right to tell them what to like amd what to post#you don't like it? you block it and let people who like it enjoy it in peace#it's that fucking easy#don't go around shitting on it especially not in a space for the fans that's just read and fucking stupid#the time you spent writing stupid annoying comment you could have spent instead blocking it and making sure you won't see it again#but no instead you decided to make yoir dislike everyone else's problem for literally no reason???#like do you think others care that you hate it? no they fucking don't you're just ruining the good time they were having#the world doesn't revolve around you did anynone ever told you that?#sorry i'm pissed and had to rant lol#fandom#people are ok with self insert and self shipping but if you try to ship a character with someone they never met suddenly you're weird#bitch they never met you either🤨

yknow i understand ian flynn haters from an intellectual standpoint - just like every other fan community and ESPECIALLY comics, inevitably there will be people with interpretations you dislike, and sometimes you will have the misfortune of those interpretations being the ones in “official” media - but they seriously cannot stop obsessing over this guy. he has zero power over you. if you do not like his takes you can ignore them. there is enough media in this franchise to do so. rabid haters are putting this guy up on just as much of a pedestal as rabid fans are when at the end of the day he is legitimately just some freelancer that SEGA pays occasionally to write some translations or tie in media. it’s really not that big a deal whether you like him or not
#like. if you don’t like a story cool! i am firmly apathetic about his stuff there’s stuff i like there’s stuff i don’t. he’s just a guy#he is not God of the sonic franchise. you can. be normal#text✨#blocking some folks 👍 i respect your right to have an opinion but i do not appreciate people being jackasses on my posts.#i am a self professed canon enjoyer too. and i have many friends who are even more strictly game canon adherent or the relative terms for#the other fandoms i’m in). you can in fact just ignore creators you do not like. i know it gets very frustrating over time but that’s what#curating your spaces is for and when that doesn’t work making dumb little vent posts like this on your personal blogs 👍

OP YOU ARE SO RIGHT FOR THIS ONE!! MB truly is this gift that keeps on giving 😌
What can you do when you have all these in-depth feelings about how much you love and appreciate one person, who has had such a profound and significant impact on your life, but if you write more than 4 words the text in the meme will be too blury to read? You use the tags, as god intended
December 5th | @separatist-apologist
Throw Me to the Flames (Elucien)
Absolute perfection are the only words to describe this piece of written work. Not only was it incredibly exciting and thrilling to read, but also full of passion, desire, angst, pain, worry, happiness, fluff — just everything and just amazing
All the Girls You Loved Before (Elucien)
This was a masterpiece, but technically every single story of this amazing author is. I loved every part of it, every single word, everything was just perfect. The story captivates you immediately, and once you start reading it you basically want to read every story of this author. It was really hard to choose two favourite story (in all honesty) I could have put every story here, but I had to decide on two.
#'MB is the best' really does sum it up well though#best friend best writer best mom best baker best tree grower best server overlord#and most of all one of the best things that's ever happened to me#I'm so grateful you were forced to write Feysand all those Decembers ago#My life is changed and better knowing you#I am in perpetual awe of how raw you experience life and how you pour your whole self into everything that you do#This fandom will never understand or fully appreciate how much work and time and love you have given#The incredible work you share with us is only a fraction of the labor you put in and you deserve to be thanked for ALL of it#So thank you for your 2 million words#And thank you for the events you run (which were just about in the double digits this year - did you count?)#Thank you for the support you offer other writers#The STRINGS of comments#The unhinged reblogs and signal boosts#The DMs and asks and endless messages#The art you comissioned#And the spaces that you have actively curated to create a bright welcoming light in a fandom that will never fully deserve or appreciate it#We are SO immensely blessed to have you in this little corner of our internet#I LOVE YOU

The Vivre Bar Discord
Well, turns out I am indeed nuts.
The Vivre Bar is an 18+ discord primarily for x reader/OC/Self-insert One Piece fans.
Please Note: You do NOT need to have OCs, Self-inserts, or even be a big huge fan of reader inserts to join.
If you have disdain toward any of those categories you probably don't *want* to join, all things considered, but if you're a lurker, a One Piece fan, a fan of other people's OCs, or someone whose just looking for a positive, safe space to be a part of, then you're welcome to come check us out.
The bar is Queer-friendly, kink-friendly, sex work positive, so and so forth. There is no gate-keeping in the Champagne Room - or any room.
We promote curating your own space at the bar:
You're allowed to block other users We encourage you to mute channels you're not interested in. There's space for other fandoms as well \o/
There are NSFW, Kink, and Dead Dove spaces you can opt in to, but you won't see those sections without choosing so.
This is an adult space, however, so please note it will often not be safe for work, and you should set your notifications accordingly.
DM, Ask, Comment, etc. and let me know if you'd like an invite, or if you have questions. ^_^
I hope you decide to give the bar a look, and no matter how long you decide to stay, I hope your time with us is pleasant 💖

I saw something in the fandom that made me upset and I need to rant about it. It’ll be below the cut so I don’t clog up people’s dashes!
I cropped the name off of this post because I am not trying to start drama, but I found this under the “Matt Murdock x Reader” tag and found it INCREDIBLY disheartening to go through to comments/reblogs and see how many people agreed.
I am in no way trying to dispute the fact that fandom spaces and self-insert fanfiction is heavily white washed/influenced by white writers. As a white woman myself, I catch many little slip ups in my own work that make my writing less accessible than I want it to be. I understand being frustrated that there aren’t many stories where you feel your appearance has been considered.
However: fanfiction, fanart, gif making and coloring, edits, and other forms of fan-made-content are usually completely free to access. No one is entitled to them—they are a privilege, not a right. Which means that people are allowed to write whatever characters they want, even if it’s not completely unique or what you want to read.
My issue is with OP’s critiques of weak/feminine/sweet/innocent readers and the way they voiced their opinion (again, not disputing the appearance stuff). I know that many readers are sweet or innocent, but as someone who is rarely given the space to be the “damsel in distress” so to speak, I enjoy writing characters who are taken care of and protected. Regardless of my or any other writer’s reasoning for writing the characters this way, we are allowed to do that. It’s our fucking work.
If you don’t like something, no one is forcing you to read it. If you notice a lack of fics that appeal to you, write some yourself. It is inconsiderate to chastise people spending hours of their free time to give you content that you can enjoy just because it’s not exactly what you want to see.
Also, don’t threaten to block me if you don’t like how I write. Just block me. It is your responsibility to curate an enjoyable experience on this app, not everyone else’s.
In summary: I am not trying to say that fandom is perfect or inclusive or that critiques of my writing aren’t welcome. This person can have whatever opinions they like and are welcome to post them on their blog. I would just like to point out that the delivery could’ve been more polite and that authors don’t need to change the plots/characters’ personalities they write just because others aren’t happy with the outcome.

This week I have mostly been reading...
May 13-19th, 2024
New idea I've had, and hopefully something I'll have time to do once a week on a Sunday. Over the past seven days, I have devoured the following Good Omens fanfics, and I recommend these most heartily to you:
Completed works I've read this week:
Boyfriend Debut by snae_b Rated E - A & C are both porn actors. It sounds seedy. It's not. Holy Hell, it's not. It's one of the hottest things I've ever read, but also so, so sweet and delightful.
They Drink Tea At The End by @knifeforkspooncup Rated T - After a year spent in Heaven, A returns to C in the bookshop completely and utterly overstimulated in every sensory capacity. A wonderful, sweet story of them truly knowing each other and an excellent example of how the fandom relates to GO in so many beautiful ways.
Pay Per View by IneffableToreshi Rated E - A lovely story set in Canada, full of our so frequently seen miscommunication between A & C. And, as the author says: "Also, why the fuck is Aziraphale watching porn in their hotel room?! And taking notes?!"
Cranking Up The Heat by @vavoom-sorted-art Rated E - Well, the title says it all, really. And the fic's description: "The equivalent of that hot wings challenge, but with porn." Don't really want to say much more, as you've gotta see it to enjoy it.
On The Same Page by Chekhov Rated E - A fake marriage fic with Only One Bed. A & C are both authors, but two very different ones. Excellently written with very vividly described mental struggles with internal homophobia & self loathing.
A Model Guardian by Fuuma_san Rated E - As a former model, I found this fic really interesting. I'd genuinely love to know what the author's tie/experience in the industry is. C is a model, A is their bodyguard. An interesting tale which involves some great discussion on gender.
In The Room Where You Sleep by @mrghostrat Rated E - Another banger by ghostrat, posted in its entirety this week. In a reversal to many other fics I've seen, A is a vampire and C is a vampire hunter. *Homer Simpson voice* With sexy results. ;)
WIPs which have updated this week (which I devour as soon as I get the update!)
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out by @phoen1xr0se Rated M - A is a researcher (puffins!), C is a lighthouse keeper on the island where A has run away to to escape his problems and do his research. The author has recently spent a week studying puffins - which is the ultimate dedication, if you ask me. Ch 9/26 posted this week
Find The Light by @klikandtuna Rated E - Headmaster A and Rockstar C. The story teases out a fraught history between them whilst keeping a tension between them in the modern day. Ch 4/? posted this week.
Terminus by @emotional-support-demon-crowley Rated T - Astronaut A is guided back to Earth by controller C after 92 years in space. There are many difficulties both of them have to face and they develop an amazing rapport. Ch 15/17 posted this week.
Oddity by @tsyvia48 Rated E - Actor C is contracted by (useless) Gabriel to guest curate an exhibition at the museum where A works. After getting off on the wrong foot, can they work together to pull off this show? Ch 22/24 posted this week.
Under The Summer Stars by @pannotbread Rated E - This wonderful fic has taught me more about physics than school ever did (mostly because I never did any physics, but...well). A & C have to share their time at an observatory because there is Only One Telescope. Not only will you learn about astrophysics, astrobiology, and astroecology, you'll also read some of the most poetically, beautifully written masturbation scenes I've ever seen. *ahem* Ch 6/13 posted this week.
Free by well, me: imposterssyndrome Rated E - A & C meet (again?) in an acute mental health ward after both having had mental health crises. A runs a bookshop but is very much under his parents' control. C has been homeless since childhood and has struggled his entire life. They do not trust each other when they first meet, but feel strangely drawn to one another all the same. Where will this lead them? This is a passion piece for me. There is a lot of lived experience in it, and extensive research from both professionals and peers. It has been a real journey for me to write it, and as I'm coming closer to the end it's becoming very emotional for me. Ch 43/? posted this week

The post that's like "You shouldn't have to know someone is neurodivergent to not be a dick to them for being 'weird'", but for being asexual and sex-repulsed or otherwise uncomfortable with sex.
I hate that fandom and online culture at large is divided into "adult" and "non adult" spaces, and if you're adult then you better be cool and chill and "mature" with sex topics being everywhere (all the time), or else you're a prude or immature or hysterical. And yet most of these people would describe themselves as ace allies, I'm sure *eyeroll*
It's true that adult fandom spaces are self-curated, but at the same time, prevalent cultures and mindsets permeate all throughout fandom content. It's not a failing to be upset at the more aggressive ones.
Nonsexual spaces should be welcoming, and protected.

OC/canon "sharing" tendencies outside yume* spaces
I've been curious about this for a long but I need a sample of people who:
participate in shipping any of their OCs/self-inserts with any canon character
do NOT consider themselves as part of yume culture (if you consider yourself one your vote will be disqualified)
so "yume" ("dream" in Japanese) can be summed up as the umbrella term for someone's activity of shipping themselves or a character they own with a canon character, usually but not exclusively in a romantic manner. this does not only apply to Japanese fandoms, only as long as you label yourself as such.
what I'm asking about here is your tendency when you encounter someone else who ships their own OC/self-insert with the same favourite character as yours, which will determine your "sharing" status.
I'd be happy to know your thoughts!

Hey, I have something I'd like to ask. If you're uncomfortable with this question, feel free to delete this, but I wanted to ask for some advice from an older twst fan.
I've seen so many people judging others for liking x Readers in Twst since much of the main cast are minors and many fans in the Twst community are adults.
I'm not even talking about smut fics, just.. regular cute romance stuff.
And I'm feeling stupidly conflicted about this because when I first got into Twst, I was still a teen, around the same age as most of the cast, so it felt ok for me to ship myself or a self-insert oc with them.
But I'm almost 21 now, I'm almost older than Leona which feels... so weird...
I just...
I don't know what to do...
I've know these characters since I was in highschool. It felt like I was going to school along side them, but I'm an adult now and most of them are still the same age, despite how many of their birthdays have gone by.
I fell in love with them and I still love them, but I'm changing and growing and they... aren't and it hurts.
And even more, I've seen people yelling at others in the community when they try to age characters up so they can write those stories and saying they can't do that because that's still weird and gross and that they just need to let go because the game 'isn't for them anymore'.
I don't know how to deal with this...
Am... Am I weird or strange for still wanting to romantically enjoy these characters?
No, not in the slightest.
I'm 29 and I love the living hell out of Leona. Is that weird? To some people, but I've been in enough fandoms in my years to just ignore what people say about stuff like that.
I've noticed throughout the months of being in the TWST fandom, how many people stick their noses into other people's business and then complain about it to someone else. You guys have a block button and a blacklist tag for a REASON, please use it instead of insulting people for liking something you don't.
If people like KaliJami, let them. Don't sit here and insult them for liking it, don't point out very loudly how liking that ship is wrong and people should be shunned for it. It's so easy to mind your business and stay in your lane.
If people like an AU someone made and you don't? Cool, block the tag and move on. Don't sit there and yell about how wrong people are.
And if people like x reader? Cool, it's fun to imagine those scenarios cause guess what? They're not real and it's not harming anyone.
Let people have fun in a fandom and stop trying to police everyone, fix you up a nice reading nook and sit there and enjoy that space you made.
From a fandom veteran to anyone new coming into the fandom. Please curate your experience.
#twisted wonderland#thorn answers#ive been on so many fandoms and i can tell you the best thing to do is fix you up a little space

Hi, everyone! Gabe/Leo here. Welcome to my new pinned post. You'll find lots of info here, including a new tag library curated by @seiya-starsniper which should help you filter (or follow) particular bits of content. This post will be updated from time to time and will also tell you whether my inbox is open or not <3
For reference, my inbox is currently OPEN.

Since you've found yourself on my blog, please note that a lot of my content is not safe for work! I am over 18, and if you're on my blog, you should be too! Content rated over 18 will also be tagged as #nsft
Here on my blog, people like to send me asks with scenarios, prompts or fic ideas that they have had, and I take a bit of time each day to respond with my own “yes, and” - collaborating with the original asker to make a small piece of fandom content. Sometimes other people are inspired by this and write their own fics based on the posts! It's a lovely collaborative space where all are welcome - including those who wish to stay anonymous.

I've been thinking about the fandom for The Arcana, and I have come to the conclusion that it's weird as hell. In my 20+ years participating in online fandom spaces, I've never seen a fandom quite like this one. I've seen drama, sure, but the core of most fandoms is a large community of people who love the same media and come together to celebrate it.
The Arcana fandom is not like that. From the very beginning we're more fractured, more factional, more fragile than most. You just have to look around at all the posts lamenting the death of the fandom every 2 weeks to see that something is really wrong here.
And I think a lot of it has to do with the nature of the canon. I am not saying this to criticize The Arcana, the devs, Dorian, or my fellow fans. I have just noticed that, as a piece of media, this game occupies a very unique space that is reflected in the way its fans interact with canon and with each other.
Welcome to the TED talk ain't none of y'all asked for.
Part of what makes this fandom unique is the evolution of fandom as a whole in the face of new types of media. As gaming becomes more mainstream and games themselves become more complex, the way we engage has necessarily changed in response.
Books/ movies/ shows are slightly more static in terms of canon than video games; canon is what it is and how you interact with what is there is largely to do with who you are. Everyone has the same base material to engage with, and that results in a certain amount of constancy. You can't interact with The Princess Bride in a way that changes the movie, only in ways that change your own perception. There isn't a whole lot of room for OCs without rewriting canon, so fans tend to consume OC-based fiction and art with the assumption that it's likely to be self-insert wish fulfillment fantasy time. That isn't always true, but there is a reason the term Mary Sue was coined.
Otome games and other choice-based video games make a very different fan environment, because the way you interact with canon is completely different. You have to build a character in order to interact with the story, and your choices directly impact your experience of canon.
But most western choice-based games are in the context of a larger RPG universe, e.g. Fallout or Dragon Age. There is a lot more to the story than the romance plot and so there's a lot more world to experience, contextualize, and build upon. There's certainly plenty of unhinged ShepxGarrus erotica, but there's also an abundance of fanworks that engage with the plot, the worldbuilding, and the canon characters with relatively little of the player's character needing to be on the page at all.
By contrast, most otome games that make it to English-speaking fandom spaces are Japanese. The romance is the point, but we also start from a place of wariness of our fellow fans. Because there's a huge difference between "harmless weeb" and "orientalist fetishizing creepo," and you know going in that both ends of the spectrum are possible, there is an amount of caution. We curate our space, looking for the creators who align with our expectations and values before we ever begin to interact.
The Arcana falls in a very unique and odd space because it is an otome, but made by Americans, with an attempt at a diverse fantasy cast. It's intended to be for American/ English-speaking audiences and is marketed as such. But making a romance game in America is challenging. Our way of approaching online media, especially smartphone-accessible media, is super fucked up, right? We are constantly trapped between the dichotomies of moral duty (Must Protect The Children) versus appealing to the customer base (Boom Anime Babes with Tig Ol Bitties). Because this is a mobile game, the developers can't make money if the game is removed from the app store, so they want it to be rated teen at the most. But the enticing bit, the thing that captures a potential fan's attention, is the flirtation and sexy implications. So from the jump they're in a weird space purely because they chose to make a mobile game instead of an indie video game released on Steam or similar.
So now you have an inherently split audience: mature adults who know they're getting into a potentially explicit romance game, and young adults/teens who have grown up in a more insulated internet culture where normal words are replaced with Orwellian doublespeak, like "unalive" and "spicy time".
THEN you add in the fact that the developers tried to build a diverse fantasy world, which is a fantastic idea both from an inclusionary standpoint and a broader audience standpoint. But because they didn't employ any actual sensitivity readers (did they think they didn't need them because fantasy can't have racism? Did they justify it as not being in the budget? Would love to know what's going on there) they fell right into a lot of the classic traps. We've been over these time and again, so I won't get into them here. Suffice to say, there has been Discourse. The presence of those issues means that more experienced fans will see those things and call them out, and that criticism causes even more of a split: the zealous apologists versus the critics. And critics can fall into two further categories: those who love the canon and want to see it do better, and the bitches who just love having something to bitch about.
Unfortunately, this combination means that there are inherently factions to this fandom, with staunchly opposed approaches to the media. So even before you enter a fandom space, it's already wildly fractured simply because of the nature of base canon.
THEN add to that the fact that this game is a dating sim. And to engage with a dating sim, you have to build a character and make choices based on that character. Some people will approach this work as storytelling, and some will approach it as an escapist expression of self. Neither of these ways of engaging with canon is wrong. Enjoying a dating sim as Me But Better is fun and completely valid! Engaging with a dating sim as a storyteller collaborating with the developers is fun and completely valid! But the two approaches are opposed in purpose, and that can make it difficult for the two types of fans to engage with one another's work.
Storytellers will well and truly invest in building a character. They may even build out communities, countries, cultures, and languages to make their world all the richer. They are investing hours of blood, sweat, and tears into Their Craft, pouring themselves into an opus of quality fanwork. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to big feelings. Fan artists and writers may feel underappreciated if all they get out of their hard work is 2 likes and a gif of a wolf making AWOOGA eyes. They may feel that critique of their work is unwarranted, or that there's no point creating if no one will engage.
The romantics will engage with canon and fanwork from the perspective that "this is my fantasy romance time". Their OC isn't so much Original Character as Optimized Characteristics--that is, their perfect self. They are here for wish fulfillment fun times in the relative privacy and anonymity of the internet, and good for them! But that may mean that criticism of canon or their fan work feels excessively personal--it is very hard to detach the ego from the OC when that OC is a projection of your best self. They may view any critique as a personal attack as opposed to a good-faith attempt at engagement or conversation. This can lead to defensiveness, or to leaving the fandom outright if it feels too hostile.
Unfortunately all of these factions cause rifts in the community. This sometimes turns into fandom vigilantism, where people begin to see any fan who doesn't wholeheartedly agree with them as an enemy. I've seen friends experience bullying and cruelty over their OCs and their art. I've seen predators use the isolated nature of the fandom to further isolate and prey upon already vulnerable individuals. I've seen some really shitty stuff.
But I have also seen beautiful community flourish. I've made friends who feel more like family than my actual relatives. I've seen people work through struggles and overcome deliberate attempts to tear us apart, finding forgiveness and friendship along the way. I've seen myself and others grow because of the community and inspiration we found here. And I saw all of that because I found my people. And I hope, Arcana fandom, that the rest of you can find your people too.

I have a bit of concern that in @staff's posts and statements they keep talking about "smaller content creators" and so forth. Small? Hm?
I can't speak for anyone on Tumblr except myself, but I am definitely not here to be a "content creator" or "Influencer" of any stripe the way those words are defined on other socials. I have no desire to or garner thousands of followers and likes on every post. I'm not here to create a brand or a name. I'm not about numbers. I pretty deliberately keep my 'following' count relatively small so I can actually try to read what people post.
I'm just a geek who wants to talk about geek interests with others who share them, perhaps talk about life, and look at cute and funny comics sometimes, much the same way I did in the aughts when blogging was honestly more of a personal interest endeavor than a slickly orchestrated attempt to become known and get endorsements. Much the same way people did in the late 90s where they put up Geocities pages with ten photos low-res scanned from magazines of whatever actor or fictional character they were into, amid a tinny MIDI sound clip and eye-straining pink backgrounds.
If I wanted to be on Reddit, Twitter or Insta I would be there. I am on Tumblr in part because it is not like those sites.
You want to make the site more user friendly so people can find their fandom brethren or other users they'd like to follow? Fix the search. Fix. The. Search. Make the settings console more user friendly so I don't have to Google how to find every single thing.
The push to collapse reblogs, though, not only impedes conversation but it sounds as though it is going to make it a hell of a lot harder to curate one's space here, as well as making it harder for self-care/curation tools like TumblrSavior to work. That's not user friendly.
Turning the site into a poor clone of other socials is not going to help it. Really.

I had this drafted around elaingate, and now that my fever has finally broken, I can piece together my thoughts on the absurdity that is this fandom and the rhys week tamlin and rhys' sister piece debacle. Because, of course, no one has learned anything from elaingate to now, and it's time to wake up and smell the coffee.
If there's one thing about this fanbase that I've noticed so far, it's that people will accidentally tell you exactly who they are in the most embarrassing way possible. What's the main takeaway in the overlap of the rhys week drama and elaingate?
Art, purity culture, and "victimhood." And people deciding who does and doesn't get to fall under the latter.
The thing that I appreciate about elaingate (and I guess Rhysgate??) happening is that it outs the people in this fanbase who don't see art that doesn't cater to them as having same rights as the art they do like/are comfortable with to be celebrated and appreciated in a community event about a character.
It outs people who only care about "protecting survivors" if their trauma conveniently matches what SJM believes to be abuse or trauma. It outs people as having the same performative inclinations of "protecting victims" as pro forced-birth/anti-choice pundits do. Rhysand’s sister, a nameless character, is the perfect "victim" to create an upheaval about because, like Elain, no one actually has to sacrifice anything or do any difficult self-reflection because fictional characters will never ask anything of you.
Remember this quote from Pastor David Barnhart? It's pretty relevant.
"The unborn are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn."
Rhys' sister and Elain are the perfect vehicle for people to feel like they're "morally just" for "protecting" from...Tamlin. And people creating specific dynamics between these fictional characters, too, I guess. Because they're evil or whatever, I suppose.
"But, Raven!" I'm sure some of you are already scrambling to say. "There are real people in this fandom triggered by Tamlin, and they were hurt! They were so upset/disgusted that they left the fandom because people cared more about fictional ships than their triggers/feelings!"
And I'm going to hold your hand while I say this as a fellow survivor of DV.
No one is responsible for my triggers and caring for my own mental health other than me. And that applies to everyone else in this fanbase, too.
It's my responsibility to curate my online experience as much as possible to my own needs. This space is voluntary to be a part of, and if I no longer feel as though it's conducive to my mental health overall, then yeah, it's probably best for me to leave. Same with everyone else who felt like they shouldn't be in this fandom space because of the elaingate upheaval.
If people rightfully pointing out that this fanbase is extremely conservative and aligned with purity culture and morality policing to the point where art is policed in relation to celebrating a character during their own week is too much for someone because of the narrative around one of the characters involved...then yeah, it sounds like this isn't a good environment for them anyhow.
There's no judgment to be passed on the side rightfully saying this fandom is fucked up, whether or not people are ready to hear that. People saying art that features Tamlin in relation to another character event still has a right to be celebrated so long as that character in the event is depicted has no bearing on whatever real person Tamlin represents to the people that were triggered.
There's only so many ways people can actually be realistically protected from content that triggers them, and tagging is the most consistent way to do so. If the protection of tagging triggering content somehow still isn't enough for people when they might happen upon art depicting a character for one day out of a one-week period maybe is also still too potentially triggering for them, then maybe being in a fandom space isn't the best for their overall mental health and stepping away from it isn't a bad thing.
(And that's all without getting into why its totally fair for peoppe to question how true that ""stance"" of "protecting survivors" actually is when the Elain Week event's tagging system is consistently ignored and not used to actually protect survivors from triggering content. It's interesting how people spent more time angry at people who were adamant about the right to celebrate art instead of the event itself for not having a remotely thorough tagging system. How are you "protecting survivors" from triggering content, including yourself as the event runner, without tagging anything from character names to triggering content/events someone might view? Let's not forget how wide-spread triggers are, too. People have trigger warnings for content involving eyes or spiders due to phobias, not just events that they might have personally experienced, like violence.)
Back to the main point, however.
Issues like these out people as not understanding that creativity means bending the rules of canon however you want, because these are characters, not real people. But real people are making this art, and its value and worthiness of being celebrated is not up to anyone's personal discretion (including event runners) even in situations of discomfort.
It's a shame that the first upheaval happened regarding Elain since she's rarely appreciated outside of her ships anyway, but this Hell-hole of a fandom has had this coming for a while now. This is an absurdly conservative, rigid-to-canon, puritannical fandom, and unfortunately, Elain Week was the match that started this fire.
As a writer, I'm always going to have a hard stance on this because appreciating and celebrating art does not end where my personal likes and comforts do. Appreciation does not look the same for everyone, and just because it's not how you would personally celebrate a character does not mean it stops being appreciation or celebration. Your preferences are not and never will be the end-all-be-all of artistic appreciation in a fandom space. If you don’t see that, the block button is right there, and I've been using it very liberally.
You either stand for all of fandom integrity and creative works, or you don't deserve to be in this space. And I will very happily remove you from my space here since, as far as I'm concerned, you don't deserve to be in mine, either.
#elaingate#acotar#rhysgate#is rhysgate a thing??#idk im making it a thing if it isn’t#anyway i hope some of you wake up and go outside#anti acotar#anti acotar fandom#acotar fandom critical#acotar critical#fandom wank#you arent a better person for not liking Tamlin or giving the things he did in a fictional narrative the same seriousness#as abuse happening to a real person with real feelings#the reality of having psychologically complex characters in a narrative is that they will resemble real people from your life#but these characters are not real and cannot hurt you and did not hurt you unlike the real person they remind you of#and projecting onto them doesn’t change anything for you#but a lot of you are not ready to have that conversation yet
