Warhammer 40,000: Tyranids Changes for June 20, 2024
And finally, it's my turn.
You had to know as soon as I posted World Eaters I was saving the Hive Mind for last!
We've had it a bit rough for a while. We may have two Army Rules, but each one would be considered the weakest Army Rule in the game. Combined they're not much better. We do have some strong Detachment rules, but our Datasheets need some love. In particular, we have a lot of trouble dealing with both high Toughness and heavy armour. Knights and Ironstorm are our bane! Our win rate has sat near the bottom for all of 10th. And though AdMech has a lower win rate, they see more top tables and event wins than we do. We also started strong with lots of players joining the faction for 10th, but that number has been steadily creeping back down as our mediocre army builds stagnate.
But almost a year into our Codex release, GW has decided we need both some external and internal balance love. Starting with our Army Rule!
Synapse
Outside of Invasion Fleet and Synaptic Nexus, Synapse doesn't really matter. It's not common for our units to survive long enough to take Battle-shock tests. This makes it hands down the weakest Army Rule in the game.
But now it's getting a minor makeover. In addition to making it harder to Battle-shock our units, all Tyranid models Within Synapse Range get +1 Strength to all melee attacks. While, much like Death Guard and old Sons of Sanguinius, this doesn't scale perfectly with the game's increased Toughness, it still helps us hit some break points. Guants now wound T3 on 3s, T4 on 4s, and T6 on 5s. Genestealers now wound MEQs on 3s and their Terminator nemeses on 4s. Carnifexes can hit at Strength 13, the Swarmlord at 10, and Norn Assimilators at both 10 and 13!
Plus I like the fact that this bonus is to melee, bringing back some of the Tyranid identity as a melee army. It's probably not enough by itself to fix our damage issues, but it certainly helps.
Shadow in the Warp
I like the concept of bringing back the horror of the Tyranid army. One of my hopes for the new Battle-shock rule was that it would allow armies like Tyranids, Daemons, and Night Lords to be menacing again. But centering the second half of our Army Rule around Battle-shock hasn't turned out very well.
But while just fighting Tyranids is supposed to be harrowing, in the lore fighting a Hive Tyrant is supposed to be a truly terrifying experience. When a Norn Emissary stares down its prey, even the most hardened warrior feels dread in their bones. To help represent this, and make our Army Rule a little more reliable, enemy units testing for Shadow in the Warp within 6" of one of our Synapse units take -1 to the test. This should stack with the Neurotyrant and Deathleaper too. This means when we hit our "Go!" button, our opponent should hopefully feel it.
Crusher Stampede
We were all down on this detachment when we first saw it. As I've said many times, abilities that trigger off of being damaged aren't any fun. When you have those kinds of abilities, your opponent just makes sure they kill your units. Now, in addition to that rule, when our Units are at Starting Strength each model gets +2 to their OC. That means that a pair of Carnifexes are now OC 10 while both models are alive.
This still ain't it. As I said before in my reaction to the WarCom article, your opponent is still going to just kill your units. Yes, that means that any models they haven't hit down are +2 OC. But so what? Your average 10 man Battle-line unit is OC 20. A Norn Emissary with Singular Purpose is OC 17 with this, and that's the best we can get in 'Nidzilla. In order for individual Monster units to hold objectives against Infantry they need a much better buff than just +2 OC.
Untrammeled Ferocity
This has been changed to match Super-heavy Walker. Now our Monsters can use this Strat to attempt to power through Terrain, but risk Battle-schock.
Datasheets
They aren't stopping there though. We're getting some Datasheet tweaks, including granting more units important Keywords.
Hive Tyrant
Onslaught now grants Assault and Lethal Hits. I would have preferred Assault and Advance and Charge, but I'll take it!
Synapse
Neurolictors, Broodlords, and the Parasite of Mortrex now have Synapse. This is returning for Broodlords and the Parasite, but new for our new brain bugs.
Vanguard Invader
Mawlocs, Raveners, and Trygons now gain that keyword, making Vanguard Onslaught even more powerful. Assimilation Swarm gets nothing! Mawlocs are Assimilators dammit!
Neurotyrant
Our new floating brain bug can now lead our old floating brain bugs! I actually really like this. That's potentially a lot of Psychic power to have floating towards the enemy.
Exocrine
They've upped the strength on the bio-plasmic cannon to 9. This doesn't make the Exocrine any better at taking out its best targets, which are elite infantry. It does mean it can wound light vehicles like Rhinos more easily.
Tyrannofex
The rupture cannon now deals D6+6 damage on a successful wound, making its original average damage now its minimum damage. This means if you can connect with this beast, you're likely to bring what you hit down.
FAQ and Errata
Neuronodes have been clarified to work with the same timing as all redeploys. FAQs are also consistent with what we've seen before, including Surge moves and Blistering Assault still allowing you to not move, though you still count as making the move if you chose to roll the dice. The interesting one is for Synaptic Goading. If your unit can make a Surge move while in combat, such as if it's shot by a Vehicle in combat with it, you can use Synaptic Goading to instead have it move towards an objective. They can even leave Engagement Range this way. We still don't know if your can put a Sporocyst in a Tyrannocyte, though.
Points Changes
So now our bugs are a little stronger, and more of them can go in one of our better detachments. (I'm still annoyed nothing, including Lore appropriate units, got Harvester added to it.) Shadow in the Warp is also a little more potent. So before I open the MFM again, I'm predicting that GW still won't be able to resist some internal balance passes. In particular, I'm guessing the Hive Tyrant, the Exocrine, the Tyrannofex, and I'm also gonna guess the Neurolictor are going up in cost.
Oh wow! I'm happy to be wrong!
So Neurolictors did take a 10 pts nerf, which definitely hurts. Those are still key to getting our army to work, so nerfing them is just taking points away from us. Ripper Swarms got some interesting discount pricing, costing 25 pts for 1 base, 40 pts for 2 bases, and 50 pts for 3 bases. They're not as useful for Mission scoring as they used to be, so they're probably going to just be points filler. With Spore Mines no longer useful for Mission play, Biovores have gone down a whopping 25 pts/model. Mucolids have also gone down a whopping 20 pts. Spore mines are still at the same ridiculous cost that says "don't take these!" Tervigons also dropped 15 pts, which puts them more in line with their profile.
Honestly this is mostly good news. The nerf to Neurolictors hurts a little, and not being able to use Ripper Swarms as easily for points fillers is a bit annoying. But combined with the the buffs to our Army Rules, some of our units, and the even more units being able to make the most out of Vanguard, this is definitely a good start. Synapse units are going to be really important now though, as will be protecting them. Might even want a second Neurotyrant occasionally now. I don't think this is enough to make us a top army, but that's not the goal. What I think it'll do is put us much more in line with the other factions.

Writing Patterns (Tag Game)
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Thanks for the tag @annwayne !
Note: #4 is explicit
1. Across the Universe (John×Todd)
“No, it's too dangerous. Not to mention completely against protocol,” Richard Woolsey, head of the Atlantis Expedition, stated from across the long, wide, and garish meeting table he’d brought with him from home.
2. Che Cera Cera (a fic that says it's John×Todd and technically is but is mostly a Todd Biopic)
The Wraith walks along the halls of the Hive, passing by large, pulsing columns which help to keep the fantastical bundle of organic matter together.
3. Something About you Feels like Home (Todd×John that I still need to finish :(
The first thing John noticed when he stepped through the Stargate was the scent.
4. Pretty Fucking [Blank] (John×Lorne)
The latest man swipes his spent and rapidly softening cockhead on John Sheppard's waiting tongue.
5. Brazen (John×Todd)
They understand eachother now, he's sure of it.
6. An Extra Fifteen Minutes (John and Todd)
Old age was like a curse, Sheppard realized as he and the Wraith stumbled through the thick forest on Koyla’s godforsaken planet.
7. I Reach out for your Hand (John×Todd)
The world came in like a slow, steady drip. First, the monotone beeping of a machine that stood out against muffled voices and the sharp but quiet ringing in his ears.
8. All Bets are Off (John×Todd)
They tumble down a hill slide, landing in a pile of soft foliage at the base of an ancient tree.
9. You Want It (John×Todd)
John races across uneven ground, nearly slipping on the wet leaves that coat this canopied part of the forest.
10. But I must admit it, I would marry you in an instant (John×Todd)
He sensed John Sheppard coming down the hallway long before he opened the door.
Besides the fact that almost all of them are JohnTodd😂 I think I tend to start scenes with a blurb about the external setting instead of the character's internal thoughts or feelings

Dataplex Automatic Discovery & Cataloging For Cloud Storage
Cloud storage data is made accessible for analytics and governance with Dataplex Automatic Discovery.
In a data-driven and AI-driven world, organizations must manage growing amounts of structured and unstructured data. A lot of enterprise data is unused or unreported, called “dark data.” This expansion makes it harder to find relevant data at the correct time. Indeed, a startling 66% of businesses say that at least half of their data fits into this category.
Google Cloud is announcing today that Dataplex, a component of BigQuery’s unified platform for intelligent data to AI governance, will automatically discover and catalog data from Google Cloud Storage to address this difficulty. This potent potential enables organizations to:
Find useful data assets stored in Cloud Storage automatically, encompassing both structured and unstructured material, including files, documents, PDFs, photos, and more.
When data changes, you can maintain schema definitions current with integrated compatibility checks and partition detection to harvest and catalog metadata for your found assets.
With auto-created BigLake, external, or object tables, you can enable analytics for data science and AI use cases at scale without having to duplicate data or build table definitions by hand.
How Dataplex automatic discovery and cataloging works
The following actions are carried out by Dataplex Automatic Discovery and cataloging process:
With the help of the BigQuery Studio UI, CLI, or gcloud, users may customize the discovery scan, which finds and categorizes data assets in your Cloud Storage bucket containing up to millions of files.
Extraction of metadata: From the identified assets, pertinent metadata is taken out, such as partition details and schema definitions.
Database and table creation in BigQuery: BigQuery automatically creates a new dataset with multiple BigLake, external, or object tables (for unstructured data) with precise, current table definitions. These tables will be updated for planned scans as the data in the cloud storage bucket changes.
Preparation for analytics and artificial intelligence: BigQuery and open-source engines like Spark, Hive, and Pig can be used to analyze, process, and conduct data science and AI use cases using the published dataset and tables.
Integration with the Dataplex catalog: Every BigLake table is linked into the Dataplex catalog, which facilitates easy access and search.
Dataplex automatic discovery and cataloging Principal advantages
Organizations can benefit from Dataplex automatic discovery and cataloging capability in many ways:
Increased data visibility: Get a comprehensive grasp of your data and AI resources throughout Google Cloud, doing away with uncertainty and cutting down on the amount of effort spent looking for pertinent information.
Decreased human work: By allowing Dataplex to scan the bucket and generate several BigLake tables that match your data in Cloud Storage, you can reduce the labor and effort required to build table definitions by hand.
Accelerated AI and analytics: Incorporate the found data into your AI and analytics processes to gain insightful knowledge and make well-informed decisions.
Streamlined data access: While preserving the necessary security and control mechanisms, give authorized users simple access to the data they require.

Apache Sqoop
Apache Sqoop is an open-source tool that efficiently transfers bulk data between Apache Hadoop and structured data stores such as relational databases. It is a part of the Hadoop ecosystem and is used to import data from external sources into Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) or related systems like Hive and HBase. Similarly, it can also be used to export data from Hadoop or its associated systems to external structured data stores.
Here are some key features and aspects of Apache Sqoop:
Data Import: Sqoop can import individual tables or entire databases into Hadoop. It can also partition the data based on a column in the table, allowing efficient data organization.
Data Export: Sqoop can export data from the Hadoop File System into relational databases.
Connectors for Multiple Data Sources: It provides connectors for various relational databases, allowing them to interact with different data sources seamlessly.
Parallel Data Transfer: Sqoop uses MapReduce to import and export the data, which allows for parallel processing and, hence, efficient data transfer.
Incremental Loads: It supports incremental loading of a single table or free-form SQL query, which makes it possible to transfer only the newly updated data.
Integration with Hadoop Ecosystem: Sqoop works well with Hadoop, Hive, HBase, and other components of the Hadoop ecosystem.
Command Line Interface: Sqoop provides a command-line interface, making it easy to script and automate data transfer tasks.
Sqoop is particularly useful in scenarios where organizations need to move large amounts of data between Hadoop systems and relational databases, and it helps bridge the gap between Big Data ecosystems and traditional data management systems.

What is azure data factory?
What is azure data factory?
Data-driven cloud workflows for orchestrating and automating data movement and transformation can be created with Azure Data Factory, a cloud-based data integration service.
ADF itself does not store any data. Data-driven workflows can be created to coordinate the movement of data between supported data stores and then processed using compute services in other regions or an on-premise environment.
It also lets you use both UI and programmatic mechanisms to monitor and manage workflows.
What is Azure Data Factory's operation?
Data pipelines that move and transform data can be created with the Data Factory service and run on a predetermined schedule (hourly, daily, weekly, etc.).
This indicates that workflows consume and produce time-sliced data, and the pipeline mode can be scheduled (once per day) or one time.
There are typically three steps in data-driven workflows called Azure Data Factory pipelines.
Step 1: Connect and CollectConnect to all of the necessary processing and data sources, including file shares, FTP, SaaS services, and web services.
Use the Copy Activity in a data pipeline to move data from both on-premise and cloud source data stores to a centralization data store in the cloud for further analysis, then move the data as needed to a centralized location for processing.
Step 2: Transform and Enrich Once data is stored in a cloud-based centralized data store, compute services like HDInsight Hadoop, Spark, Azure Data Lake Analytics, and Machine Learning are used to transform it.
Step 3: PublishDeliver transferred data from the cloud to on-premise sources like SQL Server or stored it in cloud storage for BI and analytics tools and other applications to use.
Important components of Azure Data Factory
In order to define input and output data, processing events, and the timetable and resources required to carry out the desired data flow, Azure Data Factory consists of four key components that collaborate with one another: Within the data stores, data structures are represented by datasets.
The input for an activity in the pipeline is represented by an input dataset. The activity's output is represented by an output dataset. An Azure Blob dataset, for instance, specifies the Azure Blob Storage folder and blob container from which the pipeline should read data.
Or, the table to which the activity writes the output data is specified in an Azure SQL Table dataset. A collection of tasks is called a pipeline.
They are used to organize activities into a unit that completes a task when used together. There may be one or more pipelines in a data factory.
For instance, a pipeline could contain a gathering of exercises that ingests information from a Purplish blue mass and afterward runs a Hive question on an HDInsight bunch to segment the information.
The actions you take with your data are referred to as activities. At the moment, two kinds of activities are supported by Azure Data Factory data transformation and movement.
The information required for Azure Data Factory to connect to external resources is defined by linked services. To connect to the Azure Storage account, for instance, a connection string is specified by the Azure Storage-linked service.
Integration Runtime
The interface between ADF and the actual data or compute resources you require is provided by an integration runtime.ADF can communicate with native Azure resources like an Azure Data Lake or Databricks if you use it to marshal them.
There is no need to set up or configure anything; all you have to do is make use of the integrated integration runtime.
But suppose you want ADF to work with computers and data on your company's private network or data stored on an Oracle Database server under your desk.
In these situations, you must use a self-hosted integration runtime to set up the gateway.
The integrated integration runtime is depicted in this screenshot. When you access native Azure resources, it is always present and comes pre-installed.
Linked Service
A linked service instructs ADF on how to view the specific computers or data you want to work on. You must create a linked service for each Azure storage account and include access credentials in order to access it. You need to create a second linked service in order to read or write to another storage account. Your linked service will specify the Azure subscription, server name, database name, and credentials to enable ADF to operate on an Azure SQL database.

"It's not a board game because its a sport."
Many board games are sports, like chess, and also carrom too.
"It's just the semantic difference between a carrom Board vs. a pool Table being taken literally"
This is a bit of a wriggle point in tabletop gaming, like if you invite me over to "play board games" and then we play dominion or hive or cascadia, I won't feel deceived. The term "board game" is colloquially used for many games without boards, but if I say "tabletop game" instead I think the question is still interesting, so we can use both interchangeably.
"Perhaps because Pool makes you use external tools besides your hands and the balls? idk anything about board games"
Okay, well, board games and especially dexterity games often include tools like tweezers, and the cues you use to play pool could definitely be categorized as part of that game's materials. I appreciate this answer getting to the heart of my question though, like I chose Carrom because it has nearly identical rules to Pool, and this person is looking for differences and trying to form a schema based on that.
why is carrom in boardgamegeek's database but not pool

12: Perspective
working at a place known as a haven for intergalactic criminals can be dangerous. luckily, you know people you can count on.
->explicit. contains dubcon, gore, murder, mild feral behavior, implied drugging/aphrodisiac, mentions of child labor/abuse.
.
.
.
If you want to disappear, Cabrax is the place to go. It’s discreet, for one thing, easy to miss in survey scans. Roughly oblong like an insect hive, it’s lit externally in dim, crusted blood colors (if your blood’s iron-based, anyway), mimicking a red dwarf. Its sauntering orbit around a gas giant has it hopscotching between the Stellaris Union and the Yrenth Empire’s territorial borders, making it a jurisdictional nightmare, intergalactic open waters. If you’re wanted for something in Cabrax, you’re a needle in an acupuncturist’s storage cabinet—welcome to the club.
Humans, though? Humans don’t come to Cabrax. It’s too far, too much of a hassle, and a little too dangerous. You stick out like a sore thumb. It took a few cycles for people to get used to you. You still get stares, threats, and the occasional new arrival who leers a little too much, but people leave you alone for the most part. It helps that you’re important. Cabrax is held together by a patchwork of architectural duct tape, antique gravity tech and a bootleg atmospheric generator. Every engineer the station can get is eccentric, overworked and extremely precious, so the pay is great and the risk doesn’t bother you much. Lately, you’ve even had some backup while you make your rounds.
He’s late today, though. You pace nervously on one of the lower merchant floors, checking the station time on your tablet. You have to go up a floor to check the sector generator by the pleasure booths, and you were really hoping he’d come with you. Loroa spots you from the doorway of her shop, electronic screens advertising forged ship registrations and galactic travel passes. She waves you over with one flicking forelimb, keening in displeasure when she sees that you’re alone. “He is late!” she says, indignant. Her long, equine body curls around you protectively. “No being alone. Too dangerous. Stay until he is here.”
“He might not show up,” you say.
She bristles at the mere suggestion. “Ridiculous! Small things, you must look out for each other. Nobody else will but Loroa, and Loroa cannot be everywhere at once.”
She gives you snacks, like always, a bag of savory snack pellets popular on her homeworld. You camp out next to her shop and watch the bustling market activity while you wait. The upper districts form a stalactite skyline of dingy, old metal and softly pulsing landing bay lights. There’s an orange, smoggy haze from the external lights, veiling the markets in perpetual sunset. Loroa shares a block with a software modder, a weapons smuggler, and a bar that never seems to close. Foot traffic is dense and constant, but you haven’t seen him yet. Like you, he sticks out in a sea of tailed, spined, and tendriled bodies, the only other human on Cabrax.
Just as you’re starting to lose hope, though, you smell it—slightly sweet and floral, a distinctive, earthy cologne. “Blue!” you say excitedly, waving at him across the market. He looks almost embarrassed by the attention, slinking quickly and gracefully through the stream of moving bodies to reach you. Blue keeps his hair cropped short and his bangs uneven, one eye hidden, and it’s colored with the brightest cyan dye you’ve ever seen, nearly luminescent. Everything else about him is geared towards vanishing, from his black, nondescript clothing and small stature to the hunched, closed posture he constantly maintains. He steps so lightly you rarely hear any footsteps.
“There he is!” Loroa says, arms and forelimbs crossed. She has herself wound through display booths and tables with sample products, the bulk of her still pressed against your back. “You are late! Should have been here sooner!” Blue looks sheepish under her scrutiny, bowing his head in shame. Loroa huffs. “Fine, fine. You are sorry, Loroa sees it. Go! Do not be more late! Be good to each other, small things.” She sends you off with a crushing hug. Blue sidesteps the hug with an apologetic look, shaking his head, so she gives him a bag of snacks instead.
Together, you get even more stares, but it doesn’t bother you as much. Blue acts like he doesn’t even notice, too focused on you. He has a staring problem. You’ll walk single-file through a dense crowd and feel his unrelenting stare on your back. You crouch by vent openings and dig through control panels, up to your elbows in cords and mechanical innards, and he’ll stand there, unmoving, nearly unblinking, looking at your face in profile the whole time. It was a little unsettling at first, but you’ve gotten used to it. Sometimes you stare at him, too, soothed by a familiar arrangement of eyes, a protruding nose, and five-fingered hands.
Your first stop is lower ventilation. You squeeze into a room the size of a storage closet packed with air purifying units, and Blue stands guard outside. “I heard this place was a hykra penal colony once,” you say absently. “That’s why so much of the machinery is crammed in tight spaces like this. They could just squeeze a tentacle in here no problem. I have to take everything apart just to get at the controls.”
Blue doesn’t talk. You aren’t sure if it’s a choice or not, but you don’t hassle him about it. If you stop rambling, he’ll tap your shoulder and nod or make a turning gesture with his hand. Go on, he says this way. His silence is companionable. Rarely, you’ll get a harsh exhale out of him if you tell a joke stupid enough.
“I was a shipworm, y’know,” you tell him. “Back before they outlawed it. I grew up on this awful shipping scrapheap and crawled around in the engine ducts with the other kids to make sure nothing exploded. This place seems like paradise in comparison.”
Blue gently rests his hand on your back, his palm settling between your shoulders. He avoids touch most of the time. Anything he initiates is meaningful, usually meant to comfort you.
“Aw, I’m alright, Blue,” you assure him, pulling your face out of the ventilation console. Blue has a small, worried frown on his face. “I don’t do anything that dangerous anymore, trust me. They don’t wanna risk losing any of us when we’re the only ones who know how to keep this place from falling apart!”
It’s a young friendship and there’s a lot to talk about. You ask him questions sometimes, glancing away from whatever wiring mess you’re working on to see the expressions and gestures he makes. “What kind of food do you like? What do you do around here? Do you get bored following me around all day?”
There are a lot of times that he just shrugs, unable or unwilling to divulge an answer. But every now and then, you get other responses. He ruffles your hair gently when you ask if he’s bored. When you glance at him, he shakes his head emphatically. Definitely not bored. You don’t ask why he’s here, though. Hearing someone’s past is the truest sign of Cabrax friendship. It’s not something taken lightly. You think about telling him about you, too, sometimes. Where you came from, the winding road that brought you here. But you’re not ready yet.
You split up just once. You’re halfway down a cramped maintenance corridor when you suddenly realize you can hear footsteps behind you, too heavy to be his. Blue’s gone when you turn around. That happens sometimes. He makes little detours along your route, slipping into stores or restaurants quickly before rejoining you just as suddenly. The person behind you is one of the taller, lanky species, spiny growths like knives curving out of his elbows and the back of his feet. He’s not doing anything, but he’s staring at you and he’s following you down a dark maintenance hallway, walking just a little bit faster and gradually gaining on you.
You start speedwalking, then jogging, slipping into the first doorway you come across. It’s hardly shelter, just a shallow alcove with some dusty equipment inside, but you wedge yourself behind towering metal protrusions and hold your breath. Maybe he’ll just keep walking? Heavy, clanging footsteps get closer and closer, until
they stop. You don’t hear anything. You wait for a minute, and then two. Is he just standing there, waiting for you to come out? You’re afraid to look. You wait even longer, your legs cramping in their tightly folded position. There’s a soft sound, a barely audible tap of something tiptoeing down the maintenance corridor. Blue suddenly steps into view, peering into the alcove curiously. You let out a relieved sigh.
“Where were you?” you ask, trying to sound miffed rather than terrified. “I turned around and you were gone!” Blue bows his head, the same way he did when Loroa scolded him. “I’m not mad, Blue. It just scared me a little. Tap me on the shoulder if you leave, okay?” He nods eagerly. His sweet smile stirs butterflies in your stomach.
The pleasure booths are the latest iteration of a club that’s constantly changing hands, a seedy bar and dancefloor with private rooms for rent. Half of them are staffed with flirtatious AI, the rest for couples and casual encounters. Blue stops staring for the first time that day when you walk beneath the red neon glow of the club sign, his pace slowing slightly. You follow his gaze and see movement through the open doorway, flickering light and couples grinding on the dancefloor. “Have you ever been there?” you ask him.
Blue shakes his head violently, like the idea repulses him.
“I always thought it seemed fun,” you say absently. “But I’m too nervous to meet up with a stranger. It’d have to be someone I know and trust pretty well.” The sector generator is behind the club. It’s claustrophobic like everywhere else, a narrow alley that you have to squeeze through single-file. Blue walks a little closer than usual and his cologne is closer, more pronounced. You’re grateful. People tend to be handsy around here, and you don’t want anyone sneaking up on you. The generator cabinet is a tall, sleek obelisk, and the front panel is stuck. You pick at it for a solid minute without progress and have to change tactics, fishing around in your supplies for a small, narrow object to pry it open.
“I’m glad you’re here, Blue,” you tell him. “This job gets a little nerve wracking sometimes. I don’t think I’ve had any trouble since we started hanging out, though. Probably helps that there’s two of us. We’re on the small side around here, but still, it makes people think twice before they mess with us.”
He’s really close. You can hear him breathing. Warm, heavy panting hits the back of your neck and you glance back, double checking that it’s him. Blue stares back at you. The eye contact is intense and intimidating. You feel a little overheated and keep picking at the generator cabinet.
“Uh. Anyway. Do you wanna get dinner after I finish up here? I’ve only got one more stop, I think—” Blue’s touching you suddenly, pressed against you from behind. You shift forward and he follows, and then there’s nowhere to go. You’re trapped between him and the towering generator cabinet, your pulse picking up. “Blue?” you say nervously. “What are you doing?”
He answers concisely, with a roll of his hips. Your breath hitches and you shift anxiously. You like Blue. You think he’s cute, and it’s not like you’ve never thought about this before. You might be a little touch-starved and desperate, never feeling comfortable enough to let anyone get too close. Blue grinds against you again and a shaky breath heats your ear.
“You really wanna?” you ask, feeling a little shy suddenly. “With me? Right now?”
He doesn’t tell you that he wants you. He shows you. Blue kisses your neck with such passion and focus that it feels dirty, sucking and swirling his tongue anywhere that you seem sensitive. He kisses up to your ear and nibbles the lobe, his breathing even more labored and feverish. His hands are all over you, pushing up your shirt to get at your chest. You try to keep in all the little gasps and whimpers, but it seems to bother him. He lets out a harsh breath, pouting, and starts toying with your nipples. One hand strokes and massages your chest while the other slides down, between your legs, and a third runs through your hair—
Wait, you think. He notices when you tense up. All of his hands, however many there are, suddenly retreat, but he pushes you even harder against the generator with his body. That sweet scent floods your senses and you feel a little dizzy and overheated. Arousal slams into you with meteoric force and you’re trembling, unable to stop yourself from grinding back against him.
Your tongue doesn’t work right. You only manage slurred muttering when you try to ask him what’s happening, and even those half-words devolve into mindless keening when he pumps his hips and you feel the prominent bulge in his Blue’s pants. There’s something strange about all this and how utterly desperate you feel, but you can’t dwell on it. Blue’s hands are on your body again and his touch is fire on your skin, the pleasure searing.
It feels so obscene to be doing this outside, even if you’re half-hidden in shadows. Anyone could walk by the alley or step out the back doors of the club, and they’d see Blue’s back, the frantic movements of his hips, dry humping you in plain sight. Blue’s fingers rake like claws down your back, pulling at your clothes. He doesn’t undress you all the way, but he leaves your shirt skewed, one shoulder partly exposed, and tugs impatiently at your pants until he can palm your ass with both hands. He lingers there for a while, appreciating the soft mounds of flesh and massaging them, pulling them apart.
“Please,” you stammer at some point, desperate for something inside of you. Blue freezes. You’re worried you scared him off, that he’s getting second thoughts. You only worry for a second. Blue’s hand is on the back of your neck and he’s shoving you face-first against the generator. He’s practically growling now, his breathing harsh and mingled with low, animalistic sounds. You feel his cock pressing against your entrance and his teeth set against your shoulder. He starts to bite as he sinks in. It’s exciting at first, a dull nibble, but when he gets past the tip—and it feels strange, you think, not the shape you expect and bumpy along the sides—his teeth crunch into you.
You cry out in shock and pain, stinging agony radiating down your arm. His teeth are sharp. How have you never noticed? His smile has never looked off, but it feels like he has a snake’s fangs, two long, hard needles framing a row of shorter needle points. You can feel yourself tearing and the slow, agonizing plunge of his teeth through flesh and muscle, the gush of blood dribbling down your back. Blue sucks hungrily at the wound, his shuddering breaths hot on your skin. He stays like that, his jaw clamped into you, as he starts to move.
His thrusts are fast from the start. Shallow first, quick but not too hard. He’s patient through the uncomfortable clench of your body, your tension from the bite. You feel yourself moving with him—not consciously, not trying to, but you’re moved. There’s a phantom touch on your hips and thighs, the grasp of impossible hands that tug you back into his forward motion, burying him deeper. There’s a hand between your thighs, too, fingers that start testing, curious, poking and prodding and seeing what makes you whine. He learns fast. You’re panting and trying to buck against his hand before long, but you can’t. You move to the rhythm he sets, slammed onto his cock.
It doesn’t take long for him to get vicious. It all feels good and hurts in equal measure, the brutal slam of his pelvis against your ass and the deep, punishing thrusts driving you hard against the generator. Blue is practically hyperventilating, his frantic, gasping breaths fanning across your shoulder. The ridges of his cock grind and massage your inner walls as he pummels a spot inside you that makes you see stars and tremble.
You feel his end coming shortly after you find yours, his movements losing rhythm. He pounds into you so hard and fast you struggle to breathe, and then there are hands everywhere. Wrapped around you like a vice, looped around your ankles and your thighs, squeezing your chest, straining to keep you flush against Blue’s body as he cums with a muffled snarl and spills himself inside you.
His whole body quivers with each rush of cum. He makes a high-pitched keening sound, almost like he’s in pain. Slowly, his teeth pull out of your flesh with a wet, sucking sound, his tongue lapping up the smear of blood on your skin. That sweet scent fills your nose and warms your chest. You lean against the generator, knees buckling, when Blue suddenly pulls out. Cum dribbles down your thighs and splatters on the ground. The world gets a little hazy around the edges, a dark curtain closing across your vision. You look back and don’t see Blue.
But there is something—something bright, vivid blue, its veins bioluminescent, reaching for you with countless thin, wiggling appendages—
You blink, and you’re on a couch in the back of Loroa’s shop. You feel good. Refreshed and rested. There’s a thin fog of sleep still clinging to your brain, the distinct impression that you just had a bizarre dream. You hear Loroa’s enormous body slithering and scuttling around the front of the shop as she scolds Blue, “What are you doing out there, silly small things? So busy you fall asleep in the middle of the street? Loroa heard all about it! Next time they need sleep, come sooner! No street sleeping!”
A door opens and shuts. Blue shuffles into the back of the shop looking sheepish. “Did I pass out?” you ask him. He nods. He isn’t quite meeting your gaze. “Thanks for the rescue. Jeez, I must’ve really been out of it.”
“You be careful, small things!” Loroa pokes her head in, frowning tightly at both of you. “Loroa heard news—dead thing in maintenance place! Very bad! Inside parts on the outside! Look out for each other, small things.”
A shiver runs down your spine. Bodies turn up around here sometimes. It’s not unusual. But a grisly murder in a maintenance tunnel? That could’ve been you. Blue halts your nervous train of thought by ruffling your hair. You smile and he smiles back.
“You’ve got my back, right, Blue?” you ask. He nods eagerly. “Good. Loroa’s right. We’re the only humans here. We’ve gotta look out for each other.”
Loroa tilts her head, eyeing you strangely. She looks like she wants to say something, but Blue glances at her suddenly, his gaze pleading. She lets out a huff but she nods, doesn’t say a word, and leaves the two of you alone. Blue presses a sudden kiss to your cheek that makes you giggle. It’s nice to have people you can count on, you think.

“My dear love, I wrote you badly yesterday. I wanted to do it tonight, in a relaxed manner, with all sorts of details, but I don't think I can do it yet. I presumed too much of my strength. Before, and especially since your departure, I haven't taken a single moment of rest and I feel the consequences today. Yesterday I was already at the end of my rope. Nothing was working anymore. The spring was broken; I only found energy to play in the evening. At the end of the performance I was exhausted.
This morning, I got up at 8 o'clock to go and record the documentary of "Van Gogh " in Spanish; from there I went to Mrs. Simone's house who kept Serge [Reggiani] and me there until 6 o'clock. To read us his play, which I don't like, although it's not badly done. I then had an appointment with Émile Natan, a film producer, to talk about a film that would be shot between April and June (?) and whose exteriors would take place in Corsica. You've already guessed that I'd be interested in the project, as long as you could come and join me, maybe towards the end of the shoot. We could then linger a few days in Sicily... Do you understand? I don't dare to commit myself to dreams.
Anyway, all this is still a vague project and I can't tell you about it in detail yet, because a violent headache, an immense lassitude prevented me tonight from going to my appointment. Moreover, since yesterday, my father's condition has suddenly worsened. He hasn't slept all night, his breathing is so bad that he can no longer speak or eat, and the doctor fears an immediate crisis. Naturally, this happens just when I have to be away all day to record Goethe and Shakespeare on the radio.
So here I am in bed, full of pills, sweating, "itching", swallowing my saliva with difficulty (sore throat, hives, headache, a little fever) ... and in a singing mood. Tomorrow I have to be on the radio from 9 am to 1 pm, and from 2 am to 7 pm, and all my discomforts must be gone. There won't be any trace of it left, I'm sure of that. I still have the whole week ahead of me, and then, I promise you, I will rest. I must confess that I'm very much afraid of the holidays at the moment, but I'll manage.
And now, let us turn to the Righteous. The rent's going up again. Last night there were a lot of people and even more enthusiasm. Paul Bernard came and asked me for your address. I gave it to him. Forgive me; but I am pleased that you are going to receive a letter from him. It is a means, external to me, that will bring us closer in some way. From time to time, I need those little things that are part of the daily life of two people who love each other. Every once in a while I need someone to talk to me about you as my husband. I will never abuse it, but with Paul, I let myself be tempted; last night I needed a balm; my sleep was softened by it. About the performance, the audience, the theatre, the "group", I have many amusing things to tell you; but I feel in a dark mood and can't find anything to tell you about it right now... Another day. So much for The Righteous. I only add that we continue to play well.
The apartment. The veil curtains have arrived. The feminine note is here. The little black table is finished and ravishing. It's all coming to life. The rest I'll take care of later. I can't look at the post or your image without heartbreak. I haven't yet been able to figure out what part I find in those moments of happiness or sorrow. I'll dwell on it as little as possible; I still feel very fragile.
And now I finally come to us. Ah, my dearest love. Albert dear. What can I tell you? I told you before you left that I would never talk about us or my feelings. I didn't want to influence whatever hesitations I imagined in your heart. But how false and foolish it all is! You love me. I love you more than that. There is us and nothing can destroy that "us" anymore. I know that.
I feel it deep inside me, in this fullness that I carry within me, in this unlimited confidence, in this unimaginable superior indifference that I feel when in my darkest minutes I sometimes evoke images that should torture me and that no longer interest me as if they belonged to a world that would be totally foreign to me. I have the profound certainty that you are mine as I am yours, you understand? and someone would come to prove to me that it's not true and I would never believe it. I'm going further: even if now you were trying to convince me that we are no longer linked to each other, I would think you're wrong and I would patiently wait for you to come back to us.
You had already taught me an impatience that I did not know; now I know from you the patience that I totally ignored. Not to speak to you about us!... But of what, then? I do nothing, I think of nothing, without feeling confused with you, but, nothing, do you understand? Do you live like me? Can you look at the sky, this vast landscape in front of you, the hotel room, someone's eyes, your nice little house, without thinking of me or through me? Can you be moved without me? I can't; apart from the automatic gestures in which I myself don't take part, I can do nothing, say nothing, feel nothing without you. You are confused with my heart, my soul, my body. As soon as I wake up, you are there; as soon as I laugh, I cry, you are there, as soon as I look, you are there.
Oh my love. Today I finished my documentary at 12:30. I was already late for my appointment with Simone, but I went home to look for a possible letter. She was waiting for me and how good it was! Oh, yes; write to me, my dear love; write to me, it is vital to me. I have courage, I gather all my energies to have courage, but the days are long, empty, arid, monotonous, terribly similar to each other. Your letters alone bring warmth to my room and I need to be warm so badly! I love you. Love me. I will love you to the end, yes. I'll love you as long as I live. Take me strong in your arms, hold me against you and wait for me with courage and all your love."

Imaginary Scramble: a lazy collection of plot bullet points underneath the shallow harem pandering
Disclaimer: I didn't like Imaginary Scramble, but I tend to dislike forced harem-like events like this one. Admittedly, I expected something better than this, after hearing it was like Ooku, an event I disliked and had enormous issues with but still had a plot relevance I can't deny with the appearance of Beast III/L. Imaginary Scramble, on the other hand, seems like it doesn't introduce anything new or relevant (other than “evil god” lore which shows they are about accurate to Lovecraft as Greek Pantheon was when Nasu turned them into the parts of an alien Robot Megazord). There are plot hints echoed in the event structure but none of them are new. It was like reinforcing what we already know in a very obnoxious and fanservice way. Most of these was covered with more class and effective parallels in Epic of Remnants (ok, fine, Agartha was an exception in the classy aspect) and previous Lostbelts or events. But I was asked about them a while ago. I'll cover that now, from what I remember. Just keep in mind this is my interpretation, and I haven't re-read (nor I plan to because I disliked the story) so I could commit mistakes or bypass other hints:
First plotpoint: We're trapped in a Wolf Game.
Fate/Requiem collab event involved playing the game, where the objective was to find the "wolf" among the flock (that was Marie Alter in the end). This event was written by someone who wrote a VN version of the Wolf game. This event started to push that strongly from intro with Sion's phrase about how opposing foes might become crewmates to later chapter, with Raikou's warning about how the external forces are a distraction to internal enemies. It did that, but was it necessary? Not at all, when Person of Chaldea already blatantly warns you at least of a person you shouldn't trust in the Storm Border. But it reinforces maybe that the idea of an internal enemy is multilayered:
The most obvious layer is the "traitor/suspicious person plot" brought up by the Chaldea Man, that seems to be, twist pending, Sherlock Holmes. But it doesn't stop there. Like the Wolf Game in Requiem and this event, there could be multiple players that end up being the wolves (Yang Guifei, Clytie=Van Gogh, Hokusai). Sion could very well another suspicious element, or Gran Cavallo, or Munierre, that aren't the Person of Chaldea's concern (if they knew of his presence or not).
The other layer is the general plot: the enemy that was played as an "alien invasion" (an eternal force) seemed to be a mask for Chaldea own resources and members, the Crypters first, and then Olgamarie and possibly her father or their entire family who created Chaldea.
Second plotpoint: The enemy side is not a harmonious hive but rather everyone has their own agenda and will sabotage their peers which gives Chaldea a chance of victory.
In the event, there is an explanation of how some evil gods faction are in harmony and others are in conflict, and even those end up backstabbing each other for resources. The Foreigner in question also goes against them for her own goals. I've spoken of this before, unlike part 1 which had a hive with was 99% after the same goal and smoothly carried it out, part 2 is a cluster of shaky alliances between multiple players with agendas who are wary of each other. In part 1, Goetia was supportive of Tiamat's release, but in part 2, the Beasts regard each other as potential competition and rivals even with the professional contract between two of them. Not just among the Beasts, but also between the Apostles (for example, when Rasputin saves Kadoc after Douman injures him), and between Crypters (Beryl being the best example). And Crypters toward the "God" (Kirschtaria, Beryl, potentially Daybit) or the Apostles (Pepe vs Douman). This inner dispute was able to disrupt Beast VII's optimal manifestation and Kirschtaria's Human Order Reorganization far more than Chaldea's actions. It would have been better for this event to have existed before Atlantis and Olympus, because it seems superfluous to remind us the enemy has factions and agendas when the main story chapters already highlight them.
Third plotpoint: the nature of reality, dreams, and fiction, and how it connects to the plot.
The story takes place in the Imaginary Numbers Sea, but also within a dream inside it. Guda never left their bed and was asleep all the time as were everyone they saw. One of the most important lines is about how if a real object is in contact with a fictional world, it could absorb it and affect it. And vice-versa. While it could also be a hint about the potential connection of Chaldea's computer simulations, the lostbelts, the Tabula Rasa, Chaldeas, and Specimen E story. I think we don't have the full picture of it to affirm it as a certainty, what we can affirm is how this affected Kirschtaria's body after he 'dreamed' of those simulations where he went through the part 1 Singularities seven times over. He was the 'real' person in the fictional world.
Fourth plotpoint: a hero can't turn away from a pitiful person.
I put "person" instead of girl as the story does, because Guda has tried to help pitiful people regardless of their gender since Goredolf's rescue scene. This has to do with the "hint" of Mash's and Guda's resolution to save Olgamarie, like they tried to save those Foreigners. And in a "direct sequel", of Charlotte Corday in Atlantis and Europa (=Hera) in Olympus. It's possible a similar scene to what happened with Yang (appealing to what lingers of the human self) takes place. This said, I don't think the method of creation of the Foreigners is going to be similar to Beast VII dilemma. Abigail in Salem was a better foreshadowing with her background too of a sheltered miko girl. The foreshadowing exists, but it was redundant like most of the things the event brought to the table.
Fifth point: Patchwork Servants (Phantoms)
Rather than a foreshadowing, this was a continuation of what was introduced in Shinjuku. The ability to mix or combine Saint Graphs, sometimes resulting in hybrids (Hessian-Lobo and Nemo) and sometimes with a more dominant base (the one providing the body) with sprinkles of others (Moriarty, Clytia = Van Gogh). Could this be related to the Person of Chaldea? Perhaps, but he wasn't called a Servant, and I think Carter and Raum, or Surtr and Sigurd cases will serve as a more solid set up. Also because Lev, Goetia, Solomon and Roman should have shared or similar Saint Graphs (like Enkidu and Kingu, or the Oda Sibling connection) to be proper patchwork Servants that look completely unrelated to each other. I don't rule out the possibility, however, I'm looking at this more connected to Sherlock Holmes' secrets because was introduced in the chapter where James Moriarty faced him.
I still think he could be a Beast, and the opposite L or R to the Fox because she acknowledged him in a special way. Going by this event ‘three enemies of the same class’ it could work as: Yang (Holmes) who was on your side to sabotage the other two who were cooperating/sabotaging each other (Tamamo Vitch and U-Olga). Something like a lower scale of what happens in the main story with the Beasts.

TAFAKKUR: Part 355
DIARY OF A HONEYBEE: Part 2
The honey I make is composed of water, sucrose and glucose and is very rich in vitamins. It contains enzymes to digest carbo-hydrates. It is very delicious and healthful. Some part of the honey I make may come to your table one day. I will have died by the time you are eating it. You have no obligation at all to remember me, but do not forget the One Who provides you with it through me and thank Him.
Day 32 - Thousands of bees die in our comb every day and other thousands are born. This happens in so orderly a way that no confusion is seen.
There is one among us without whom it is impossible for things to be in order in our comb-the queen. She is a bit larger than us and was programmed to do things different from what we do. She cannot collect nectar nor make honey, nor feed the larvae. She cannot feed herself either. We, her daughters, feed her with the royal jelly we offer to the young larvae.
The queen bee lays eggs. She must lay around 2000 eggs every day, for our lifespan is very short. While we are feeding her, she lets us taste from a substance she produces. We go round the comb and so cause all female bees to taste that substance by which a kind of birthcontrol is secured in the comb. On the day we do not taste it, we all begin to lay eggs. Since those eggs are not fertilized, only male bees come from them. Male bees have no task other than inseminating the queen bee. Their number is quite limited. If they were to be too many, the order in our comb would collapse.
Day 35 - A new factory has started to work in my body today. This factory installed in the back, lower part of my abdomen produces wax. I collect that wax with the sticks on my middle legs and chew it to mould it into the cells of the comb.
The cells we make are hexagonal in shape, because, compared with the amount of the wax used to build them, as much honey as possible can be stored in them. Also, a hexagonal form is most resistant to external forces. We make 35 thousand cells from half a kilo of wax and store 10 kilos of honey in them. We need three and a half kilos of honey to make half a kilo of wax.
We make cells in different forms according to need. While making them, we take gravitation into account. For example, the cells where the female worker bees lie horizontally form a vertical layer, while the cells where future queen bees lie vertically are parallel to the earth surface. The cells where male bees grow are bigger than those of the females. As you certainly understand, it is impossible for us and for any other things in nature, including what some of you call natural forces, to know and arrange all these things. There must be One Who does it. One Who knows us together with our relation with our environment and employs us in many important tasks.
Day 37 - (your June 11)- So far, I have left my comb on many occasions but only to throw out the waste matter and had opportunities to see the outer world from afar. Today I left my comb but not to discard waste but to fly around the comb, to obtain knowledge of the outer world.
Flying is very tiring for us. Unlike birds, we do not flap wings. When we start to fly, our wings move automatically in a way to make 250 complete turns in a second. While flying, our front and back wings are bound to each other.
When we start to fly, our wings curve along certain lines in a way to adjust our body to the air current. They draw a figure-of-8 shape in the air. In proportion to the size of our wings, our bodies are heavy (unlike birds which fly). They grow heavier when we collect nectar from flowers. Despite this, we can fly 15 kilometres an hour.
Like our flying, our landing is also miraculous. Unlike birds and your planes, we do not need to decrease our speed before we land. Thanks to the tips of our legs, while flying in the air, we can immediate- my alight wherever we want.
Since our wings move at extremely high speed, our need for fuel is high. Our muscles have a metabolic rate ten times faster than the heart of a man. We consume sugar as fuel. Before we start a journey, we take enough ‘fuel’. However, if the amount of sugar in our blood reduces to 1 per cent, we obtain new food wherever we are.
Day 38 - My new task is keeping guard at the entrance of the comb. No one, not even other bees, are allowed to tenter our comb. We know one another by our smell. The smell of each community of honeybees is different. Our antennae distinguish between the smells very well. The entrance of our comb is also marked with the smell particular to our community. Any other creature which does not carry our semll is prevented from entering.
Day 39 - There have been some changes in the comb. The cells of about a dozen larvae have been made bigger and turned vertical. The larvae in them will be fed with royal jelly until they become pupae.
The queen bee has accelerated laying eggs. She lays about 2000 eggs a day.
Day 41 - Now I am a fully mature honeybee. I will no longer do the housework because the factories in my body producing royal jelly and wax have stopped. From now, I will spend my days collecting nectar from flowers.
Today it was my first flight outside. When I flew far away from the comb, I found myself surrounded by a design of colours. The scents coming from all around nearly caused me to faint. Flowers attract us by their colours and smells. They have structures arranged as if to serve as platforms for our landing. When we land on them, we pass our tongues into the source of nectar in their centres. Meanwhile pollen from the flowers clings to the hairs on our bodies giving them the look of prickly sticks. We leave some of this pollen on other flowers we visit and thereby assist i the pollination of flowers. But for this service we perform, you would not enjoy the benefit from fruit-bearing trees such as peach, apple, pear, almond and plum.
We do not visit flowers at random. Whatever kind of flowers we visit first, we continue to visit the same kind in the same environment. If we did otherwise we would be carrying pollen of other kinds of flowers and therefore waste the pollen, uselessly.
We are mostly attracted by blue. However, we also visit flowers of other colours except red. Red flowers do business with butterflies.
We do not see flowers in the same colour as you see them. Only the nectar containing central parts of the flowers you see as yellow appear to us as yellow to attract us to you see as white appear to us as coloured. In short, when we go on a journey to collect nectar, we do not look for them. Flowers themselves smile to us and attract us.
Day 42 - I have spent today also among flowers. If you had followed, you would have seen that I visited around twenty flowers in a minute and as many as 20,000 by evening. I stored the nectar in my stomach and the pollen in the sacs on my back legs.
Since our return is difficult because of our load, we follow a direct way called the line of bees. Even if we pass through places unknown to us, we always follow that direct way. It is extremely easy for us to establish it. The place and position of the sun gives us our direction, Of course, the sun has changed position while we are visiting flowers. That is no matter at all. You cannot compete with us when it comes to calculating the exact place and position of the sun at any time of the day. If you kept me in a dark place and then released me hours later, it would not take me more than a few moments to find my direction. We use the atmospheric polarization and find the place of the sun by means of any little light coming from any corner of the sky. We have been doing this calculation for millions of years but you have come to know it only in the last forty years.
We cannot make our way only on completely dark days and therefore we do not go out on those days. We stay in and are busy with the work in the comb.
Day 44 - We are a big anonymous company with its tens of thousands of partners and personnel, agents, boards of directors, awesone storage and processing establishments and a well-developed communications network. We pursue big markets to do business.
We do big business. Many other insects, flies and butterflies visit the flowers with which we do business. However, when we find a profitable source, we rush toward it as an army of 10 or 20 or 30 thousand bees.
Five per cent of our population are responsible for finding a market. They constantly search big markets and we evaluate the markets they have found. If, for example, one of our friends finds a market of one million flowers in the morning, you will see their nectar and pollen transferred into our depots in a few hours.
Our communication system works perfectly. Let me describe this to you with an example.
It was nearly noon. One of the elder bees entered the hive in great excitement. Other grown-up bees crowded around it.
From the smell of the pollen on its body we could understand what kind of a source it had found. We tasted the nectar it threw up onto the comb from its mouth. It was a bit more watery than it should be. However, we had to take into account the heat outside and the fact that that sample had been collected in early morning. The amount of sugar in nectar in morning hours is less than at other times. In short, the kind and quality of the nectar seemed OK. But we did not yet know the location of the source and whether it was a rich site, nor how far away it was.
Our friend immediately began to dance. A few bees near it and I held on to it to follow its movements. While dancing, it uttered some sounds which meant that the source was rich, and drew a figure 8 over the comb, completing a turn in 15 seconds, which meant that the source was 10 kilometres away. Our friend was dancing according to gravitation. While drawing the line in the middle of 8, it made an angle of 28 to the right. Since we always take the sun to be at an angle of 90, the source our friend described was 62 to the right of the sun.
The information our friend gave to us was for a still, windless day. However, it was windy when we left the hive and therefore, taking into account the direction and strength of the wind, we corrected the angle given to us.
Day 47 - Our population has recently increased. We are about 60.000 bees. Our hive is not enough to accommodate all of us. Preparations made over the preceding few weeks mean that some of us will move to another place.

Data Disposal - Open Source Java-based Big Data Retention Tool
By Sam Groth, Senior Software Engineer, Verizon Media
Do you have data in Apache Hadoop using Apache HDFS that is made available with Apache Hive? Do you spend too much time manually cleaning old data or maintaining multiple scripts? In this post, we will share why we created and open sourced the Data Disposal tool, as well as, how you can use it.
Data retention is the process of keeping useful data and deleting data that may no longer be proper to store. Why delete data? It could be too old, consume too much space, or be subject to legal retention requirements to purge data within a certain time period of acquisition.
Retention tools generally handle deleting data entities (such as files, partitions, etc.) based on: duration, granularity, or date format.
Duration: The length of time before the current date. For example, 1 week, 1 month, etc.
Granularity: The frequency that the entity is generated. Some entities like a dataset may generate new content every hour and store this in a directory partitioned by date.
Date Format: Data is generally partitioned by a date so the format of the date needs to be used in order to find all relevant entities.
Introducing Data Disposal
We found many of the existing tools we looked at lacked critical features we needed, such as configurable date format for parsing from the directory path or partition of the data and extensible code base for meeting the current, as well as, future requirements. Each tool was also built for retention with a specific system like Apache Hive or Apache HDFS instead of providing a generic tool. This inspired us to create Data Disposal.
The Data Disposal tool currently supports the two main use cases discussed below but the interface is extensible to any other data stores in your use case.
File retention on the Apache HDFS.
Partition retention on Apache Hive tables.
Disposal Process
The basic process for disposal is 3 steps:
Read the provided yaml config files.
Run Apache Hive Disposal for all Hive config entries.
Run Apache HDFS Disposal for all HDFS config entries.
The order of the disposals is significant in that if Apache HDFS disposal ran first, it would be possible for queries to Apache Hive to have missing data partitions.
Key Features
The interface and functionality is coded in Java using Apache HDFS Java API and Apache Hive HCatClient API.
Yaml config provides a clean interface to create and maintain your retention process.
Flexible date formatting using Java's SimpleDateFormat when the date is stored in an Apache HDFS file path or in an Apache Hive partition key.
Flexible granularity using Java's ChronoUnit.
Ability to schedule with your preferred scheduler.
The current use cases all use Screwdriver, which is an open source build platform designed for continuous delivery, but using other schedulers like cron, Apache Oozie, Apache Airflow, or a different scheduler would be fine.
Future Enhancements
We look forward to making the following enhancements:
Retention for other data stores based on your requirements.
Support for file retention when configuring Apache Hive retention on external tables.
Any other requirements you may have.
Contributions are welcome! The Data team located in Champaign, Illinois, is always excited to accept external contributions. Please file an issue to discuss your requirements.
