I've only tried Dnd (too rules, too expensive, too genre locked) and Fate which I'm still feeling out but I'm getting the feeling it's too freeform for the players I'm DMing for. you have basically asked me the equivalent of "I have tried pizza, which is popular but I did not like, and tofu, which is too open to all the possibilities in the world (fate is good and cool, like tofu). what should I try eating next". so hopefully you see why this is hard to answer

I have been playing Starforged as my main game for the last year or so. it's the sci-fi fork of Ironsworn (which is free btw :3). ironsworn is lovely cause you can play it as a GM with a table full of players, or co-op with other players and NO GM, or even just by yourself!! the rules are split up into mini rules packages called "moves", which trigger whenever you do something in the game and then have their own varying outcomes that can suddenly change the game in ways no one expected.

characters in ironsworn are defined by Assets instead of a class or a big list of skills; each asset is like a superjuiced D&D feat, empowering you to do really cool stuff or even *giving you completely new moves that are unique to your character*. whenever you're feeling stuck, the Oracle tables are there to jump-start your imagination. my playgroup loves asking the Oracle for her opinion on stuff all the time. you can run a game of Ironsworn/Starforged as a GM with absolutely zero prepwork and be okay because the moves and oracles are there to support play.

my absolute favourite RPG is HEART: The City Beneath. it's gorgeous, haunting, evocative, and tragic. the core of the game's engine, the Resistance system, is a tension builder and drama generating engine, because as the players Do Stuff, they build up stress to their resistances, and then after building up too much stress, the dam breaks and it all comes crumbling down in a juicy dramatic consequence, which the book has like a hundred options for you to choose from if you cant think of anything interesting right away.

your character's background comes with a bucket list of things you could do (like eating something you really shouldnt, or getting a landmark named after you), called Beats, and then you pick 2 of those Beats every session. if you do either of them, you get a new ability from your class! it's very cool because it inherently tells the players what kind of cool stuff they can do, encourages them to do it by rewarding them for taking action, and it makes prepwork *very* easy for the GM because the players have to tell you exactly what they want to do the next session.

the classes in HEART are also some of my favourite archetypes out of any game I've read. the deep apiarist, who has hollowed out their body to be a host for a hive of psychic bees, can do things like get through tiny gaps by letting their hive chew up their body and rebuild them on the other side. the vermissian knights are basically an order of cursed paladins that are obsessed with creating a failed train network that was planned hundreds of years ago but never came to be. there's a gun wizard class. and all of them have a dozen abilities that are all enticing; no features that boil down to being a +2 bonus to attack rolls, you want to collect as many of these things as you can.

but the best part of game is the setting itself, the Heart. it's a red wet heaven under the surface of the earth, a rip in reality where a strange otherspace has crawled in. whenever someone enters it, it tries to build itself in the image of their desires, but it does this slowly and badly. everyone has a different theory on what it is. what this means for your game is that even though the heart has a very strong identity and hits a specific feel, it shapes to the style of GM you are and the desires of your players as the game unfolds. every table's Heart is just a little bit different.

Fic or headcannons (whichever you choose) of the Hive having a prank war. They're all chaotic so it wouldn't be surprising that they did prank wars.

Main pranksters are: Puffy, Skeppy, and Quackity.

They would never band together to create ultimate chaose because they're all too competitive against each other.

Puffy's pranks are always light-hearted and borderline sweet sometimes. But she can be a real menace somethimes. She put catnip on Antfrost's coffee once... yeah that didn't end well.

Quackity's pranks can't kill people, but they deffo inflict some kind of physical damage. Sapnap was knocked out cold when he opened a door and a bucket of water fell pn him. I mean, the bucket was placed wrong so it fell with the water rather than poured the water.

Skeppy's pranks are... interesting. To say the least. His idea of a prank is randomly forcing his friends to compete in an arena or something and give the winner a huge chunk of his diamonds. That, or hiding in their room for hours on end just to jump scarr them. This man has dedication I tell ya.

It would all be over for everyone when Sam decides he's had enough and is now going to make them all pay by getting back at them.

Sam would literally take a person's most valued possession (where ever it may be hidden, he will find it and he will take it) and use that to get that person participate in whatever maze/obstacle course he managed to make in a matter of 3 hours (which would always be huge and impossible). This man has no chill when he's pissed.

But, if Sam were to prank people while he's chill, he would flip their room upside down or something lol.

Sapnap's idea or pranking is setting shit on fire. As one does. But he won't go and destroy stuff he knows is important to his friends.

Dream would make every electronic in the Hive play Speedrun music at the same time whenever he could XD. Also, he'd change the Netflix password without telling anyone just to see them suffer.

Ponk's pranks are... psychologically damaging if I do say so myself. Like... the man painted both the Hive and the Titans' tower pure white, complete with good lighting to avoid shadows, and just... watched as everyone slowly descended into madness because, where's the fucking walls?! oh fuck I stubbed my toe on the coffee table that I can't fucking see!! is this the door??? Everything is white!! Why?! (no one even knows when he managed to do that without anyone noticing.

A Lesson in Beekeeping

Warning: bee sex discussed. Honeybees. Bee Stings. The noble worker bee giving up her life for the hive

  Today is a free day. Free from classes and studying and homework. Everyone needs time to themselves to relax and do what interests them. You’re deep in the woods near the monastery, collecting plants, seeds, flowers and mushrooms. Your restful time alone is interrupted as Claude, your house leader, has found you.

“What’s a little girl like you doing out in the dark spooky woods? You better watch out for big bad wolves!” Claude laughs.

“I’m not Lys. This isn’t frightening.  The higher altitude and specific climate divergence varies greatly from what I am accustomed to, as well as the flora has specific diverse qualities that interest me.”

“No need to go all Linhardt on me.” The dark haired male backpedals.

“New place, new plants.” You translate.

“You’re not going to complain about being called little?” Claude elbows you, digging for a reaction.

You roll your eyes. “My stature is undisputed. 95% of the student body is taller than I am. As time passes, the percentage pullulates.”

“So now what am I going to pick on?” Claude shrugs.

“Your pants, most likely, you’re standing amongst cockleburs.” You grin.

Pulling your notebook out, you scribble something on a page, stuffing a few leaves in the book before you return it to your pocket.

The next day, Professor Byleth makes an announcement to the class. “The kitchen is in need of anyone who is familiar with collecting honey or bees.” She continues to read the note and frowns. “Honeybuns no longer available in the kitchen.” She looks panicked.

Dorothea, recently recruited into the house raises her hand. “Ferdinand is much like a bee, send him!”

You raise your hand. “I will assist.” You do not mind missing the afternoon class for weapons training and maintenance, since you are a mage, it does not interest you.

“I’ll give it a shot.” Claude throws his hat into the ring.

Class ends and everyone heads out for lunch. Byleth thanks you and Claude for saving the honey buns.

You finish lunch quickly and head to the back entrance of the Kitchens. Martha greets you and hands you a few buckets and sharp knives. They don’t really have the beekeeping equipment, the keeper left suddenly due to his mother becoming ill.

“Looks like we’re going to have to improvise.” You groan.

“To be honest, I’ve never done this before. Always willing to learn something new though.” Claude confesses.

You frown at him. “You’re just curious because their stings contain poison.”

Claude looks away.

You run over to the Golden Deer lunch table. “Professor, we’re going to need assistance gathering equipment together. I’m going to leave the buckets and knives here, if anyone can add to it bring it here. Dorothea, do you have any stiff wide brimmed hats? I need 2. Leonie, can you bring some scissors, needles, thread and thick twine string or cord. Going to need about 3-4 meters. Does anyone have any thick extra leather gloves? Especially if you don’t want them back because they are going to get messy. A pair for me and a pair for Claude. We also need 2 white long sleeved shirts. Ignatz, if you have a spare that would be wonderful. Need one for Claude too unless he has one.”

You run off to the marketplace to find some dark black diamond netting with the smallest holes you could find. Back at the dining hall the Deer have done the deed and all needed items are acquired.

You create a beekeepers veil from the hat, stitching the netting around the brim of each hat. Wearing the long sleeved shirt you put the hat on, then tie the hat itself on with it’s ribbons so it won’t fall off when you bend over. Then you tie the string over the veil around your neck so that the string goes under the collar of the shirt. Putting on the gloves, you stuff the cuffs inside then wrap the open end of the gloves shut with gauze, pinning then tying it with more string.  At the bottom of your pants you tie them around your ankles keeping them close over your socks. You take extra string and wrap them around bundles of semi dry weeds you pilfered from the compost pile.

You are ready for the battle of the bees.

“How do you know all this?” Claude asks as you head out around the walls of the monastery. The bees are located around the back by the fruit trees.

“Grew up a farmer. Brothers wrangled the larger animals. I was stuck with smaller ones. Chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and bees. Need bees to pollenate fruit trees.”

“An expert on the birds and bees. Got it!” Claude grins.

“Have you ever been stung by a honeybee?” You ask him.

“Dunno. I’ve been stung by all kinds of bees. Black ones, yellow and black, black and white.” He shrugs.

“Claude! Just like every four legged animal is not just a horse, every flying insect is not necessarily a bee!!” You chastise him. “Honeybees are mostly non-threatening unless you are invading their home or disturb them while they gather nectar.” You stop at a nearby flowering bush. “This bush has all sorts of insects on it.” You take the sharp knife and point at a few different ones identifying them. Bluebottle fly, paper wasp, hornet, sweat bee, carpenter bee, bumblebee and finally honey bee.

“Most of the stinging insects have a sharp, smooth, pointy stinger, like Felix’s sword. The honeybee has a barb at the end of its stinger. Think of Byleth’s fishhook. The smooth stingers, can sting multiple times each putting a little poison in. Honeybees, when they sting, their barb gets stuck in your skin, and it rips off their stinger. When the stinger rips out, the poison sac comes along with it. The bee then dies, they are literally giving their life protecting their homes. Never use your fingers to grab the stinger to remove it, you are squeezing more poison into you. Scrape it off with the blade of the knife.”

“Good to know.” The archer nods.

“We are headed out to work on the bees. As soon as you notice you have been stung, we move away and make sure it won’t kill you. If it itches or swells a little, that’s normal. If you swell up to 10 times your normal size and stop breathing, you’re allergic.” You warn.

“Understood.” The Deer’s leaderman nods.

  At the middle of the orchards are several different tables and boxes.  You put the knife and bucket on the table. Inside of the boxes, with the front completely open, are what look like upside down baskets. They have a small hole in front that the bees are going in and out of at a fast rate.

“First we need smoke.” You instruct, taking out a bundle of semi dry weeds, lighting the ends with fire magic until most of the ends catch fire, then you blow the fire out. The weeds give off lots of smoke.

You tell Claude to wait by the table. You quickly go in front of a hive and lift it, pulling it out of the boxlike shelf and placing it on the table. You lift the hive pulling it to the edge of the table and let the smoke go into the hive for 30 seconds or so.

“Smoke gives the bees something to do besides chase you. When bees smell smoke, they think there is a fire in the hive. That means they have to grab what they can and get ready to leave. The bees are filling their stomachs as fast as they can and will fly off when the heat is too much.  Another benefit of this is the bees will have a full stomach and are less likely to sting you. The bee has to curl its body to the front of it to sting you, like bending itself into a letter C. That is much harder to do when its gut is full, less likely to sting.”

You look underneath again There are several rows of beeswax combs hanging down with bees crawling all over them many bees face first into cells eating. You squat down low so you can look up into the hive. The white beeswax comb on the outside looks like it is empty, the next section of comb looks like it has some nectar or honey in it, and the one after that looks like it is fat with honey that has been covered over by the bees.

“Ok. This is a skep, we try to get bees to build their hives in them. It is thick rope that is bound together in sort of a bell or upside down pot shape. The bees start at the top and attach wax to the top, then create these combs. The combs are built hexagonal cells on each side at the tiniest bit of an angle, facing up in a wide V shape. That is so they can put nectar in it and fill it almost half way. Once the nectar is in, other bees will evaporate the water from the nectar by fanning their wings. Once enough water is evaporated, it turns the nectar to honey. Once it is the right thickness they fill the cell up completely, then bees cover it with wax to preserve it. Then we steal it.”

You stick the knife between the ropes of the skep. You cut through the beeswax at the top and sides of the third comb from the left until it comes loose in your hands. Gently, so gently, you pull it out from the hive. It has some bees on it, but most of them stay inside the hive.

“Honeycomb is made from wax that the bees shed off their bodies. They chew it until soft and build these perfectly symmetrical 6 sided cells. Notice the bottom of the cells on this side matches with where 3 cells come together on the other side. Makes it super strong. This honey is heavy, at least 15 pounds on this one chunk alone. We only want to take honey, and the honey should be covered by wax.”

You tilt the comb to the right and some liquid runs out of a few cells.

“Too watery. Bees didn’t cover it and won’t until it evaporates more. Whatever spills the bees will collect and put into their hive again.”

There is about 16 centimeters of comb at the bottom where there is nectar not covered or just empty. You cut this from the rest of the honeycomb, placing the capped comb in the bucket.

You take the part that is cut off and hold it to the light.

“Sometimes you can see eggs in the bottom of the combs that do not have nectar in them, those are bees of the future. I am not wasting this. I’m going to melt the wax at the cut and put it back where I took the other part out.

Squatting under the hive, you summon magical flames, melting all along the cut edge of the wax and nectar, sticking it into the space you took the top of it from. Holding it up there you wait a bit for the wax to cool and it sticks. You leave the next couple combs alone, looking at the opposite side. You don’t want to disturb the queen or babies. The bees keep their spare honey to the sides of the nest where the queen is laying eggs. You decide to cut another chunk out. Gently taking it out you bring it to the table. There is capped honey about half way down. Then the honey stops and there is different colored darker stuff in the combs.

“The top is capped honey. Bees make it to feed the babies and feed themselves, especially in winter. Next they gather pollen. They even sort it keeping the types of pollen together. Grass, clover, ash, oak, maple, sunflower, if it has pollen bees take it. Heavy protein in pollen. They sort honey too. You’ll see all kinds of colors. Really light colored honey in the spring. Darker honey in the fall. Anyway, cells lower than that is where the queen lays the eggs. When the eggs hatch they look like larvae, you know, the stuff Teach fishes with. The bees feed the larvae honey and pollen. It grows and fills the cell. Once it is big enough it spins a cocoon, the adult bees cover them with wax. They pupate and turn into adult bees, chewing their way out and going to work in the hive.

You continue working as you harvest more honeycomb and try not to destroy any of the hard work of the bees by putting what comb you can back inside the skeps.

“I gotta know. Tell me about bee sex. Everyone talks about the birds and the bees.” Claude grins.

“There are 3 castes of bees. The queen. The worker. The drone. There is one queen in a hive. She is the only female that mates. She mates for maybe 7-10 days of her life, maybe 12 to 16 times. Spends the rest of her life laying eggs. Her body is the longest/biggest in the hive, her abdomen is quite large, swollen with eggs. It sticks out much farther than her wings. Next are the female workers. That accounts for 90% more or less of the population. They gather the nectar, bring it back, put it in the cells, dehydrate it, make wax, build cells, protect the hive, guard the hive, get rid of the dead, feed the queen, clean the queen, pollenate the flowers, collect the pollen and 100 other jobs. If there is work to be done they do it. They have the stingers that sting to protect the hive. Queens have stingers too, but theirs are smooth. They fight other queens, nothing else. That is why there is only one.“

“We can’t’ forget the drones, the males. They have no stinger. They do no work. They contribute nothing to the hive except for the queens genes. They don’t pollenate. Their only purpose is to go out and find a virgin or recently virgin queen to mate with. They mate while flying in the air. The drones hang out in an area looking for their lady love. Their eyes make up 80% or more of their head, go almost all the way around it. Once they see a queen, they fly after her. She flies high and fast and whoever catches her first gets her. He sticks his male part into her female part. Upon his entry, his part breaks off, and he falls to his death. She goes out again for more. Bees don’t mate with their relatives, each has their own smell. So they spread their genes around. “

“Gah!” Claude slaps his arm. “They got me!”

“Get over there by the wall and sit down!” You order him, quickly finishing what you were doing, then rushing to Claude’s side, away from the bees you take off your hat and veil putting your ear to his chest to listen. His heart sounds pretty normal. Breathing sounds good

“Where is the sting?” You’re looking him over.  

He points to his right upper arm.

“How are you feeling?” You’re watching the spot where he was stung, checking his fingers, his eyes, listening to his breathing.

“Talk to me for a bit. Just talk about anything. If your tongue swells up, that’s a bad sign. Talk so I know you’re okay.” You unbutton his shirt and pull it down over his shoulder to where the sting is.

“Gah! Just mention bee sex and you’re all over me!” He laughs.

The bee must have snuck inside his shirt, got into a small hole somewhere. His arm looks okay, the stinger is still in his arm and his skin is red around the stinger, the spot is about as big as a gold coin and slightly puffed up. Pulling a dagger out of your pocket, you scrape along his arm, flicking the stinger out.

All the while Claude keeps talking, counting trees in rows. Asking if you would be taking his pants off if he was stung in the leg…

“How are you feeling now?” You ask. “And that is why your pants legs are tied at the ankles. To keep them out.”

“Doing fine.” He grins. “The sting hurts a little less now. Not sweaty, not a real good poison. Mostly localized.

You put your ear to his chest again, checking on his breathing and heart rate.

“So how many stings before they really get to you?” The master tactician asks, his mind always working.

“If you are allergic 1, if you  are sensitive maybe 20? If you work with them all of the time? Well I had over 75 in a single day and it just made me a bit nauseous.” You say as you help him put his shirt back together. “Want to do more or call it quits? I don’t want to do this when it starts to get dark.”

You both agree to play it safe. Marking the hives that were harvested, you head to the kitchen dropping off the buckets of honey. There’s a few bees hanging out with the honey comb, but the kitchen can deal with them.

Heading back to the hives you finish cleaning up.

“So what did you bring to put bees in?” You ask.

“What?” Claude feigns innocence.

“Don’t be all innocent with me. You want some of their poison.” You grin. “Give it to me. I’ll get some in it and then show you how to get your poison. Oh, remember, male bees have no stingers right? I think we should prank Lorenz. It’ll give him a heart attack.”

Claude laughs heartily, “And here I thought you were nothing but a bookworm with no sense of humor.”

“I can have fun too!” You whine.

“Great, just come by my room any night you want to discuss more about the birds and the bees, eh?” He grins.

“Now you’re sounding like Sylvain.” You groan.

“Oooh, that was a major insult. I am wounded.” Claude laughs.

Yes. I am a beekeeper. I love my bees. I could watch them work for hours. The smell of a beehive on a warm summers day is amazing.

Minecraft AU or whatever

(Sorry long post ahead) Nobody can stop me from combining my two biggest interests so here’s headcanons for if all the Nekoma boys played minecraft

Inuoka is obsessed with bees, collects every flower he sees and brings them back to the hive that's always by his house. Legitimately super good at building, his base is always the biggest and the grandest. His storage is always a mess though, he just puts all his chests in a shed and makes new ones when he needs them, there's no system. Gets really sad whenever he kills an Enderman, has a small garden filled with nothing but grass blocks that they've dropped

Lev prefers Creative Mode and refuses to play Survival without cheats and Keep Inventory. He has a sign outside his house that says "It's not a dirt house, it's a dirt home." Tames every horse he sees even if he doesn't have a saddle, is very invested in creating the most efficient cow crusher. He listens to all the music discs religiously, Cat and Blocks are tied for his favorite. Found diamonds once and got so excited that he accidentally jumped into a lava pit almost immediately after. Absolutely terrified of silverfish and is unironically trying to learn the enchantment table language

Teshiro owns the most cats anyone's ever seen in one place, but he just keeps breeding them. Only just started playing recently but is insanely good at parkour. Watches mcyts and drops everything to go mining when he finds a good cave. Doesn't fear anything, shoots at Ghasts from really far away just for fun

Shibayama is a true Minecraft vet, has probably played for longer than everybody except maybe Kenma. His skin is a character that he made in like 2011 and refuses to change it. He knows every song and all their names, not just the music discs but the songs that play in the background. He turns the volume way up when Sweden or Wet Hands comes on and is always inevitably scared half to death by the cave ambience noises. Really good at PVP but freezes up when he has to fight a creeper

Kuroo is not "good" at the game by any means, he played it all the time with Kenma when he was introduced to it but somehow hasn’t picked up any of the skills. He likes to watch other people play it and has never beaten it without somebody else (probably Kenma) doing most of the work. He has a crazy amount of dogs for someone who runs away from Skeletons. But the nerd is a part of the endangered population of potion masters, he knows like every recipe and has the "A Furious Cocktail" achievement (even though he's terrified specifically of the Elder Guardian)

Kai has only beaten the game by himself once and he sat through the entire "end credits." Dedicates himself to increasingly impressive farm/garden designs but doesn't bother with huge houses. Chronically addicted to campfires and lanterns, the people he plays with have to hide their torches. He's also really good at redstone and his contraptions confuse and amaze me. He is always willing to share his supplies (unless he doesn’t have enough for himself, then he’ll challenge the person to fair duel for them) and he always partners up with/spares people doing the crouching thing in PVP. Really likes Iron Golems and builds one for any village he finds that doesn’t have one

Yaku makes his career in failed speedruns and surprisingly good build designs. The huge amount of achievements he has is suspect at best (Kuroo is half convinced he paid Kenma to get half of them for him). He is the unofficial defender of Drowneds, Strays and Husks and has a deep respect for Baby Zombies. He blows up his friends' houses for fun (Lev is his main target) but will start a war if anybody else does it to them. Cried when the Moobloom didn’t win the 2020 Mob Vote

Kenma doesn't even need an explanation, we all know that he's been playing since Java Edition and definitely has more merch than he knows what to do with (I like to think he has at least three creeper onesies). He would be one of the best speedrunners out there if he didn't despise the Nether. He has his own Manhunts and his rages are the worst for this game, he's probably broken a few controllers because he fell in lava. Once beat the Ender Dragon with a diamond hoe

Yamamoto wouldn't even be playing the game if it weren't for his mcyt phase in like 2014 (he would have been crazy for PopularMMOs, prove me wrong), probably used to pretend that he didn't so that he could look "cool." Participates in the said Manhunts for the sole purpose of beating Kenma (and he probably has at least once). Went insane when the Nether Update came out, has since been trying to live there permanently. Jumps off buildings and down ravines even though he can't do the water bucket trick and is convinced that he can shoot an Enderman if he tries hard enough

Fukunaga is an unprofessional chicken farmer. Has the skills to beat Kenma in a 1v1 but prefers to spend his time collecting every dye in the game for his sheep army. Shockingly good with a bow and arrow but doesn't understand how to use crossbows. Doesn't scare very easily but he likes to go in places where people can't see him and shoots them once before leaving. He's not very good at building but he's dedicated to The Craft so he watches tutorials to make his farms look nice. Could kill the Ender Dragon at a moment's notice but he refuses to out of respect

The Lord of The Infected.

-A talon reaches out, caressing her cheek, and wiping away her tears. The Lord of the Infected leans in to her. “Entrapta. You… Are Beautiful.”-

(Fanfiction of Fanfiction! A sequel to yesterdays spoopy story written by my good Badass Submitting friend!)

  Entrapta looked into Hordak’s eyes, the one’s she’s grown familiar with over the years, and seen nothing of her lover within them. There was no gleam of pride in them as he looked upon her, no true recognition or real happiness glinting in the dim lighting as he stared at her. The deep crimson irises and sclera were now a feverish ruby, the dark skin around them replaced with the slightly glowing techno-organic moss that was spreading all across the Sanctum like fleshy, magenta kudzu.

  The Virus had the shell of her lab partner, but transformed him into something nearly unrecognizable.

  The dark lines on his chin and cheekbones, normally parallel and thin, became jagged, disorganized and grew on his face like captured magenta lightning. Hordak’s scarred, white skin on his face had become a pastel pink and the natural blue skin on his torso, back and thighs was tinted with a reddish hue. His entire aura glowed a neon pink, as though The Virus made himself a beacon. Which in essence, he did, going by how the techno-organic moss reacted and grew to his physical presence every time he walked by a vitrine or large mass.

  Her lab partner’s distorted transformation didn’t stop there. 

     Hordak’s hair had grown several inches in length from the time she last seen him up until now. The disheveled mohawk, which looked like it hadn’t been cleaned or brushed in days, grazed his right shoulder. Its deep blue locks were streaked with fuchsia in some places and covered one of his ears. The other, visible, ear was now tipped with a solid magenta growth and thus elongated Hordak’s already large, bat-like ears into something more demonic.   

  Entrapta was in awe at the transformation, and deeply disturbed. After her escape from the Fright Zone, traversing the always changing maze that was the Whispering Woods, enduring a long and intense meeting with Bright Moon’s Nobility and Protector and coming back, the journey had taken her less than a week to complete.

  ‘It only took a few days, and he’s already gone.’ Entrapta thought morosely, lightly holding the arm of her lab partner. The feverish skin on his hands was scalding to the touch, and Entrapta could feel it through her gloves and on her neck. Unlike Hordak’s soothing warmth, the Virus’ touch was like that of a live wire or dry ice. It burned and caused her body to go numb and seize. The bare talon The Virus was caressing her with felt like a hot ember.

  But, the physical pain was a drop in the bucket compared to how much emotional pain Entrapta was feeling.

  'The First Ones Virus was the one in control now,’ Entrapta sadly reasoned. 'And wherever Hordak is, he mentally isn’t here.’

  No one was with Entrapta anymore. Her friends and the soldiers under her command were several rooms away in another segment of the Sanctum fighting for their lives, the shouts and noises of battle distant. She was alone, friendless, again. Glimmer and Bow were gone, her soldiers were gone, and Hordak… He was the furthest away even if he was physically the closest. The thing occupying his body buried him in its parasitic hold like a deep grave.  

  The Tech Princess could feel burning tears continuing to fall down her cheeks, the same pit of loneliness growing within her once again as all of her newfound connections snapped apart and fell into the abyss.

  “You can’t do this.” Entrapta panted, her throat barely functioning as she was being throttled and burned by the Thing that took Hordak away from her. She tried to reason with the Virus, negotiate. “Etherians aren’t biologically structured to become a hive mind. The will of the people-”

  “Is irrelevant.” The Virus interrupted, now pushing Entrapta harshly against one of the vitrines growing the viral moss, it’s techno-organic content now slowly attempting to grow on Entrapta’s clothing. “They will accept the Paradise, feel our joy flow through them. Free Will is unneeded, it brings only chaos and strife. Don’t you understand?”

  “Our Knight does.” The Virus continued, nodding to himself, his other hand stroking his own chest like that of a beloved friend. “Your "Hordak” understood the joys of being a Part of the Whole and had some understanding about the dangers of allowing free will to jeopardize the sanctity of order. He’s seemed to have forgotten recently, but We helped him relearn. The Paradise encompasses all. You will all experience the joy Hordak and Ourselves feel. It’s only a matter of time.“

  The tone the Virus had was frightening. It was so assured that what it was doing was truly beneficial to Etheria and her people. That it was in the right.

  There was no reasoning with the Virus. 

  "D-don’t you understand,” Entrapta wheezed, her breath knocked out of her at the harsh push from earlier and the tightening hand still constricting her throat. By some miracle the Virus wasn’t using Hordak’s full strength at the moment, not that it stopped the burn of his touch. “Etherians aren’t like Hordak, we can’t assimilate they way you think we can. The process will kill us.”

  “Then We’ll make you just like him!” The Virus yelled. “We’ll just rip off limbs, make new organs and replace them with our tech.” The Virus reasoned, a now demented laugh coming out of Hordak’s mouth. “We’ll make everyone on this planet a viable candidate and once that’s over then they’ll be ready." 

  The Virus’ words were manic now, almost desperate for her to understand him. The  gleeful tone, smooth voice and wide, open-mouthed smile the Virus had looked so terribly wrong on Hordak’s face. Her lab partner never grinned this deeply, and even at his most happiest, Hordak usually had a closed smile. But now, The Virus’ grin split Hordak’s face open. His mouth glowed the same, garish, reddish-pink as the rest of the Sanctum and both sets of his canines were inches longer than usual.

  Entrapta could see the virus-vines snaking along Hordak’s tongue, gums and teeth, their rootlike structure going deep in his throat. She nearly vomited at the horrendous sight. 

     The scientist could already feel the unnatural heat of the Vitrine-moss burning her shoulders as it tried to grow on her bare skin. She had to get away from here, now, before this Infection killed her. Entrapta struggled against the Virus but Hordak’s body, not only enhanced by his armor but now also by the Viral moss, was too powerful.

  "It would kill everyone. Don’t you get it. YOU WILL FAIL!” Entrapta screamed, using the last bit of strength her body still had. It was one last fuck you to her captor, one last bit of rebellion.

  The Tech Princess expected the Virus to wring her neck after she uttered her words, but the unexpected happened, the First Ones Virus let her go.

  She felt his scalding hand release her neck like it was the one burning him, watched in curiosity as Hordak’s body backed several feet away from her in what looked like fear. His ears were drooped, his body hunched and his hands grabbed his chest as though he was protecting himself. The Virus shook his head, trying to shake off some invisible force that had apparently wrapped around him.

  The Virus then looked back up at her, and in that split second, Entrapta could see something she’d been looking for. Hordak. In that one instant and disappearing just as quickly, she could see a glimpse of her lab partner back within his headspace. The crimson flashing within the magenta. 

  “But how?” Entrapta mumbled to herself, catching her breath and now moving away from the infected vitrine and her lab partner. 'What changed?’

  “don’t say that.” the Virus then whispered, almost brokenly. Soon enough it stood back up to Hordak’s body’s full height, the massive alien now towering over the scientist all too easily once again. “WE will succeed and bring all of Etheria to our Paradise.” The Virus growled, taking a step forward, his claws now fully extended and growing longer thanks to the virus growth. The bright pink claws glowing in the dim sanctum.

  “You can’t stop Us.” Then, he lunged, a near sonic screech coming from Hordak’s mouth as he let out a battle cry.

  Entrapta had only a split second to react, her body instinctively darting away from the attack and using her hair to shove Hordak’s body into an overturned table as she ducked into an abandoned hallway. Knowing the further away she was from the vitrine the safer she was, relatively speaking. 

  She worked in unstable mines during her childhood, dealt with wayward killer robots and malfunctioning experiments that spewed broken glass, caustic chemicals and flailing metal limbs. Her body and mind was well attuned to danger over her long years as a researcher, and knew how to dodge and deflect it with ease.

  And during those crucial seconds of evading, watching her Hordak slowly pick himself up from the floor and follow her exit, she understood what happened. What had caused the Virus’ sudden and odd behavior. Entrapta had the solution to defeat the virus right in front of her this whole time, Hordak. Or rather, his trigger.

  Failure.

  The Virus made a big mistake in choosing Hordak as its host, the man himself. While Hordak was powerful; his body created for war, conquest and dominance. His mind was anything but healthy. Thanks to Horde Prime, the name sending waves of disgust in Entrapta’s mind, Hordak’s psyche and self-esteem had been shattered into pieces well before he stepped foot in Etheria all those decades ago. The then upcoming decades only worsened his self-worth issues, inferiority complex and pathological need for success as he build an empire out of a single ship.

  The plan came to fruition at the cost of Etherian lives and Hordak becoming the very thing that threw him away in the first place. It took years for them both to drag Hordak away from the quagmire of Horde Prime’s disturbed machinations, and still, the fear of failure followed Hordak around like a serpent in the grass. Waiting to strike him when he was at his lowest. 

  Entrapta had seen Hordak’s adverse reaction to being called a failure, the physical and mental pain it caused him. The man’s own armor enhanced body collapsing when his negative thoughts affected the neural interface links so acutely, to the point that his armor lost power when his emotions got the better of him.

  The Tech Princess knew what she had to do, and she wasn’t going to like it.

  'Hordak, if you’re still in there, please forgive me.’ Entrapta silently implored. She looked all around her, examining her new environment, and found it safer. There were no vitrines or robots in the hallway, and the very thin virus-moss snaking on the floor was weak here due to less power. This place was as good as it was going to get.

  Hordak’s body rose from the floor, his teeth grit and ears pinned back in anger.  One of his clawed hands slicing a metal pillar, the talons going through the outer-hull grade iredeleum like a hot knife through butter.

  “Why do you fight us?” The Virus questioned, cocking his head sideways, his voice sounding almost hurt. “Don’t you love Us? We love you.”

  In some way, Entrapta slightly knew that whatever the Virus was feeling towards her, was genuine. Whatever the parasite felt, the thoughts came from the host he was inhabiting. Entrapta had a good inkling that Hordak’s insecurities was bleeding into the virus too.

  “I love Hordak and I hope he still knows that while being smothered by you.” Entrapta hissed, her anger at seeing this Thing hurting the one she loved coming out. She had to get angry, she had to let her hate flow through her, Hordak depended on her do what needed to be done.

  Even if the words she was about to say to him hurt them both.

  “Our Joy and Paradise isn’t smothering him.” The Virus argued, his enhanced body slowly coming towards Entrapta, and followed her into the hallway. “What we’re doing is for the benefit for all Etherian kind. Our strength and power will-”

  “How can you call yourselves powerful, if you’ve FAILED every engagement my people ever had against you?” Entrapta loudly taunted, but internally cringed. She had to bury her feelings away right now though, everyone depended on her at the moment. Especially Hordak’s. 

   The effect was instantaneous and disheartening to see. The Virus once again wilted and backed away from her, the Virus’ hands now covering his ears as though her words caused him physical pain. They probably did. This time Entrapta could see small arcs of electricity moving across the armor. The word “Failure” was triggering Hordak’s mind and causing a negative feedback loop.

          Good.

  “shut…up.” The Virus croaked, his voice cracking and steps faltering. 

  Entrapta had to continue.

  “You failed to take over my Crypto Castle.” she stepped forward, the Virus stepping back. “You Failed to kill us in the Northern Reach.” Entrapta reminded the Virus, enunciating the word “failure” once again, moving ever closer to her recoiling target. 

    “How can you say these things?” The Virus whimpered, looking up at Entrapta once again, his eyes filled with unshed tears. “Can’t you see you’re hurting us?”

  The scientist could see Hordak’s eyes clearly, one a deep crimson, the other a bright magenta. The words Entrapta was saying bringing Hordak partly out of his fugue state. Whatever joyful feeing the Virus had been clouding Hordak with, the emotional pain of Hordak’s past was clearing it from his mind.

  Entrapta also had the impression the Virus couldn’t handle the emotional pain either. 40+ years of self-worth issues weren’t something anyone could handle, least of all an old A.I system gone rogue.   

  “And you’re FAILING here now too!” Entrapta screamed, Hordak’s body now doubled over in pain, his now hoarse voice groaning in agony. Entrapta could now see the First Ones Disc imbedded on Hordak’s back, adhering to the power-pack between his shoulders. But, Hordak/Virus was still standing, able to move.

  They weren’t completely immobilized just yet and soon enough, her Infected lab partner lunged for her once again. His teeth and mouth glowed their horrible magenta, the deadly claws grew even longer thanks to the Virus’ desire to eviscerate their enemy once and for all. Hordak’s armor, while sparking due to its malfunctions, was still functioning.

  But Entrapta was ready for the final and desperate act of the Virus’ self preservation protocol, and in a blink of an eye, one of her pigtails grabbed Hordak/Virus by the neck and pushed him into the bulkhead. The purple tendrils tightly wound around Hordak’s neck, with a single wisp of hair caressing the crystal imbedded in the collar.

  Entrapta knew she had to do the coup de grâce.

  She had to finish him, this, now.  And she knew what she had to say too. The phrase that began Hordak’s fall from the Horde, uttered by Horde Prime himself all those decades ago. He told her, once. After a nightmare on his part left him screaming in the night and waking her too, Hordak told the story of what happened on that fateful day in Horde Prime’s War Room, of his banishment.

  And now, she was going to make Hordak relive it, if only to save him from the First Ones Virus. With a deep breath Entrapta readied herself, her other pigtail raising her several feet in the air, so Hordak/Virus had to look up at her. She then pulled her welder’s mask down and made sure she activated the glowing lenses.

  Entrapta’s profile changed in the dim light. Gone was the small, cheery princess who loved science and imperfections. In her place now stood the tall, imposing red eyed monster that plagued Hordak’s past. The being normally relegated to nightmares, now a reality once more.

  “Do you know what the definition of failure is?” Entrapta Prime spoke, her tone forceful and deep.

  Hordak/Virus stiffened in shock, his eyes widened in fear. The arms that attempted to unwrap the hair choking him locked in place and were unable to do anything, old muscle memory telling him to never hurt his Big Brother. The heterochromatic crimson and magenta eyes glazing over as Hordak relived the worst day of his life, dragged the Virus along with him too.

  “Please, My Lord, don’t…hurt us.” Hordak/Virus pleaded, the formerly unshed tears now falling freely. Hordak’s phantom pain, memories and emotional turmoil were too much for the First Ones virus, the creature’s joy now replaced with the same emotions that Hordak barely coped with. The Virus was not handling it well.  

  “Failure is when something ceases to serve a purpose.�� Entrapta Prime continued, pushing and dragging Hordak/Virus even further up the bulkhead, curling her hair-limbs even tighter around her victim’s neck. Entrapta could feel the armor malfunctions getting worse, the electrical arcs getting larger, Hordak’s hands getting weaker, and she twisted the knife deep one last time.

  “When that happens, it becomes worthless to me.” Entrapta Prime stated, now dragging Hordak/Virus close to her face, the red lenses reflecting Hordak/Virus’ sobbing face back at them. “I gave you a chance to prove yourself worthy to me. AND YOU FAILED!”

  Entrapta released Hordak/Virus from her tight grasp, and he fell onto his hands and knees. Hordak/Virus now lay sobbing on the floor, hyperventilating, his body now unable to move thanks to the malfunctioning armor and negative emotions that the virus had no way to counter.

  The scientist immediately came back down to Hordak/Virus’ level, kneeling next to her lab partner. Entrapta mumbled apologies and carded her hands through his overgrown mohawk, before firmly grasping the First Ones Virus disc and pulling at the offending object with all her might. It wouldn’t move, the techno-organic flesh adhering to Hordak’s back like a clam on a ship’s hull. 

  She couldn’t get it to budge and nearly cried at the wasted effort. After everything she did, all the pain she put her partner through, it meant nothing. The Virus was still there, infecting him.  

  “After all this, you still won’t let go of him!?” Entrapta yelled, now crying against her partner’s back. “I just want Hordak back, please.”

  She stayed like that for a few minutes, resting against the thing that both caused her so much pain and loved very deeply. The two beings now seemingly unable to be torn apart. She failed, that’s all there was to it. She had someone, and then lost them. 

  As she lay on top of him crying, Entrapta could feel the being sit up and dislodge her. Entrapta watched as the being still knelt on the floor, eyes downcast and his tears still falling, look up at her. Magenta stared back at her, his ears drooped down to their lowest points. Entrapta could have screamed.

  Then, it spoke.

  “We’re sorry. We only wanted to be useful once again.” The Virus simply said, the tone actually sounding apologetic. But before Entrapta could get a word in edgewise, the being stretched a long arm behind his back and pulled at his disc. The First Ones disc easily pulling away from Hordak’s armor. The Virus’ magenta eyes looked at the tri-pointed disc once more, before throwing it far away from Entrapta and himself.

  Almost instantaneously, the First Ones Virus disc’s effects dissipated from her lab partner.

  Hordak’s body lost it’s neon pink glow, the techno-organic moss melted away from his body like melted wax and his eyes lost their magenta color. The crimson eyes dully stared back at her, exhaustion and fatigue apparent, as his tears were now a light magenta color. As though his body was purging every last bit of the virus from within him, pushing the infection away. 

  “…Hordak?” Entrapta asked, her voice small and frightened. Was he really back?

  Hordak said nothing for a while, his body’s strength now wavering and causing him to slightly sway. But soon, a small smile graced his lips. The tall alien’s weakened hands grasped Entrapta’s shoulders and Hordak pushed his forehead to Entrapta’s, headbunting her gently.

  “I’m back, Entrapta.” he sighed, now resting his exhausted body on Entrapta’s. He was too tired to speak further and let his body do the talking, the small chirps from his throat telling Entrapta all she needed to know. He was himself. The scientist could feel Hordak relax against her, his body slumping his full weight on top of her. The Tech Princess didn’t mind, she could feel his warm body heat comfort her.

  If anything, the strong pump of his heart and his deep breathing next to her ear was a welcome sound. 

  Entrapta, for her part, scooted them both to a neighboring wall and wrapped her hair and arms around him in a warm cocoon. Entrapta could hear the sounds of battle stopping, the loud hum of power cycling down and the distant clangs of robots falling where they stood. The techno-organic moss on the walls and floor sublimated like dry ice on the ground, leaving no trace it was ever really there.

  It was over and she had her Hordak back. They could deal with the mess and repercussions later. Right now, she had a lab partner that needed rest.

Integrate your Amazon DynamoDB table with machine learning for sentiment analysis

Amazon DynamoDB is a non-relational database that delivers reliable performance at any scale. It’s a fully managed, multi-Region, multi-active database that provides consistent single-digit millisecond latency and offers built-in security, backup and restore, and in-memory caching. DynamoDB offers a serverless and event-driven architecture, which enables you to use other AWS services to extend DynamoDB capability. DynamoDB provides this capability using Kinesis Data Streams for DynamoDB and DynamoDB Streams with AWS Lambda. When you enable DynamoDB Streams on a DynamoDB table, it captures a time-ordered sequence of item-level modifications in the table and stores this information in a change log for up to 24 hours. Downstream AWS services can access these change logs and view the data items as they appeared before and after they were modified, in near-real time, using a Lambda function. This allows the DynamoDB table to integrate functionally for additional use cases like machine learning (ML), ad hoc queries, full text search, event alerting, and more, such as the following: Processing DynamoDB data with Apache Hive on Amazon EMR for data warehousing use cases Configuring AWS credentials using Amazon Cognito to authenticate access to DynamoDB tables for mobile application Using Amazon API Gateway and Lambda with DynamoDB for a front-end serverless architecture In this post, I show you how to integrate ML with Amazon DynamoDB using Amazon Comprehend to analyze sentiments on incoming product reviews. Serverless and event-driven architecture When you perform create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) operations on a DynamoDB table, DynamoDB Streams keep a 24-hour change log of all CRUD operations. The stream offers you four options of log attributes. For more information, see Enabling a Stream. Lambda functions process each incoming log event, extract the necessary information required for downstream services, and invoke said services, such as in the following situations: A function can loop back to a DynamoDB table to create or update the aggregate item, like a summary item or average of statistics in real time. You can use a function to send specific attributes to Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES) for full text search use cases. For historical analysis or ad hoc queries, the function sends the updates to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) in optimized format through Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose, where you can run ad hoc queries or analytics using Amazon Athena You can use the recently announced option to export DynamoDB table data to Amazon S3 for the initial setup of data for analysis; however, you can’t use it for continuous read requirements. Additionally, using Kinesis Data Firehose for data export offers optimized Apache Parquet If you want to be updated on a specific event on the DynamoDB table like the deletion of a critical record, Lambda can notify you through Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS). The following diagram illustrates this event-driven architecture. Using ML and analytics with the DynamoDB solution You can configure Amazon review analysis and analytics by running AWS CloudFormation on your own account. This solution uses a serverless event-driven architecture with automated steps. The solution checks the sentiment on the incoming Amazon product review, creates a product review summary based on the sentiment, and keeps updates in optimized format for future ad hoc queries and analytics. The following diagram illustrates this architecture. For this post, the solution uses the incoming Amazon product reviews by putting a review object in the S3 bucket in the form of JSON records. The S3 bucket publishes the s3:ObjectCreated:put event to Lambda by invoking the Lambda function, as specified in the bucket notification configuration. Lambda is meant for quick processing, so the solution limits the size of the product review object on Amazon S3 to smaller than 5 KB. If you want to run this solution in your account, follow these steps: Download the following artifacts: CloudFormation template – Part 1 CloudFormation template – Part 2 Sample gz file for testing – test.json.gz Deploy the CloudFormation Part 1 stack. Check the CloudFormation documentation for instructions. Once Part 1 stack deployment is complete, deploy the Part 2 stack. The CloudFormation Part 2 stack imports the resources created and setup a managed policy. You can run the stacks on all regions where these services are supported. I tested it on US regions, North Virginia, Oregon and Ohio. Please note running this solution in your account will incur costs. The Lambda function amazon-review-processing runs and assumes the AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role created by AWS CloudFormation. The function reads the Amazon S3 events it receives as a parameter, determines where the review object is, reads the review object, and processes the records in the review object. The function breaks the incoming record into multiple records and DynamoDB items: a review item and product item (if it doesn’t already exist).  This allows you to retrieve an individual item based on the partition key and sort key. The delivery stream converts the record format to Parquet and adds these records to the S3 bucket. Kinesis Firehose is configured with Record format conversion enabled and Output format as Apache Parquet. You can now catalog the S3 bucket on Athena and run ad hoc queries. You can use your own ML model instead of Amazon Comprehend if you want more granular sentiment analysis. You can also use other AWS services to integrate with DynamoDB by using DynamoDB Streams to extend DynamoDB features. The Great Space Race - Races in Starfinder

Yogi's Space Race was a wacky Saturday morning cartoon by Hanna-Barbera that featured an eclectic range of characters who competed in an intense intergalactic race for fame and glory. Notable stars included Huckleberry Hound, Phantom Phink, and even Fred Flintstone. Each character had their own unique spaceship, alignments, and quirks (see where I'm going with this?), which made for an entertaining bit of programming for kids to enjoy as they kicked off their weekend.

Starfinder launches with a similar array of brand new races for us to experiment and explore with. Without considering the "grandfathered" or "legacy" races like Dwarves and Elves, players have the opportunity to expand their design horizons with these fresh, shiny character-suits. Just like Pathfinder, each race grants special abilities and adjustments that may make them more inclined to pursue specific classes, but players are encouraged to not let optimization (aka min-maxing) completely railroad their character-building ethos.

Without further delay, onto the races of Starfinder!

Android - If you want your character to look like a human, but don't necessarily want to play AS a human, the Android is for you. No Apple fanboys here - just a blank mechanical canvas on which you can apply your robotic impulses. As a race, androids each house a soul, which means that they are considered to be living, sentient beings in Starfinder. The "bodies" housing the souls are often passed to subsequent generations. Apart from complete obliteration by a laser blast, androids are essentially capable of living ad infinitum, and so this soul-swapping practice is considered the death of that specific consciousness. The naming/numbering convention used by androids will sometimes reflect the number of souls who have inhabited the body (i.e Teppid-3).

The level to which the android wishes to blend into society and hide their mechanical nature is completely up to the player. There may also be some bitter feelings towards humans for past history of enslavement, although not all androids share this sentiment. Within the Starfinder system, android characters are also given the ability to install an armor upgrade into their body as a character feature, exemplifying android uniqueness and their mechanical infrastructure.

Human - Ah, the most polarizing race choice! In my experience, people either love playing as a human or want nothing to do with it. For the former, players may picture their RL selves as the protagonists of the story and want to share those epics moments by living vicariously through their characters. I fall more into the second bucket; I've been a human my entire life and I want to stretch my (shorter) legs by rolling up a Dwarf or a Ysoki instead.

Humans in Starfinder are described as being the "glue that holds the rest of the solar system together," meaning that they are culturally diverse and are generally accepting of the other races. This could be seen as an inevitable outcome of not having their own home planet, but Humans in RPGs usually fit well into a mold where they can adopt other cultures and let their individuality shine through.

Kasatha - If General Grievous had been more...fleshy...his frame would be incredibly similar to that of the Kasatha. Built upon the ideologies of historic families, the kasathas are deeply entrenched in cultural tradition and they tend to honor the past with great conviction. Described as intergalactic nomads, they arrived in the Pact Worlds system on a quest to populate a 'promised land' of sorts, known as Akiton. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so without the likelihood of severe casualties to their entire race, and so now their home planet isn't really a planet at all; their colony ship, the Idari, serves as the self-sustaining ship on which many kasatha still live.

Due to their history-loving background, kasathas are gifted with bonuses to Culture checks. They also, obviously, have the ability to use their four arms simultaneously to manipulate the world around them. As a race as a whole, kasathas are introverted when it comes to openly recounting their cultural practices, which leads to an aura of mystery that surrounds them.

Lashunta - A penny for your thoughts? Lashunta are characterized as the telepathic race, and feature two distinct subtypes - the korasha who are focused more on physical attributes, and the damaya who spend time developing their mental faculties. Education is at the forefront of their culture, and all lashunta share a love of learning and discovery, regardless of their subspecies. In this way, there is a faint resemblance to gnomes, who also take great pride in personal and cultural discovery. The lashunta culture is especially unique in that, by having two subspecies, they also have two main strengths. Everyone within the society has a specific role to contribute to the greater well being of the city-state.

Telepathy will be huge draw for players, and the inherent ability offers automatic role-play potential. Because of the korasha and damaya choice, players also don't have to sacrifice their preferred class to play a lashunta and have access to some basic spells native to the race. I love the idea of creating a korasha who feels like they should have been a damaya and vice versa, since the Inner Struggle and characterization that can come from it would generate some memorable moments for the players. Building characters that are the opposite of their perceived 'best' path (i.e. an Orc Wizard or a Gnome Barbarian) is always a worthwhile challenge and an enjoyable pursuit for me.

Shirren - Finally! Shirren jumped out at me right when they were first revealed, mostly because of The Hive mind mentality. When it comes to insects in the real world (not saying that Shirren are insects...there are merely similarities), it is fascinating how an entire colony can react and communicate so effectively with itself. Shirren are obsessed with individuality and having agency over their actions. On top of that, shirren also take great pride in being a part of something that is greater than them; teamwork and a sense of community are generally a part of their individual identity.

Again, telepathy is featured as a racial trait for shirren. What sets them apart from the lashunta are their specialized antennae, which have a heightened sensitivity allowing shirren to sense creatures before being able to physically see them. They also receive bonuses when performing skill checks or ATTACKS near an ally; being able to have the effects of 'Bit of Luck' once a day is HUGE and can be a game-changer for parties in hairy situations. Creating a shirren character that will do whatever it takes for 'the greater good' will also be a fun avenue to tread down, as those actions could be detrimental to the party. How will players handle those interactions?

Vesk - I'll probably refer to the Vesk as 'Space Orcs' since they are the strongest and most combat-inclined of the new Starfinder Races. The similarities don't end there! Warlike and ferocious, the vesk arrived in the Pact World system with the mission of conquering planets and taking them as their own. They also value a meritocratic leadership system based around heroics and exploits in battle (just like orcs). Vesk will often find themselves in a militaristic profession, either a professional soldier or mercenary, in a personal quest for honor and glory.

Let's not put them all in a box, however, as there are plenty of vesk who are respectable merchants or diplomats. They are also not inherently evil; vesk tend to follow the rules and traditions set forth by their communities. Now, these regulations could directly conflict with those set by other planets or races, so even a lawful alignment won't guarantee roses. There will likely still be guns involved. Vesk seem to have the strongest opinions on the other races, and it will be interesting to see those issues addressed at the table.

Ysoki - Last, but certainly not least, are the Ysoki. Sometimes called ratfolk, the ysoki have an incredibly varied culture due to the lack of a common/shared home planet; ysoki originated from multiple planets and, therefore, each ysoki can have completely different traditions from the next. In a way, the ysoki share some overlap with RL humans, where ancient civilizations existed independently of each other before the entire world was realized. They typically hold a love for technology, gadgets, and anything mechanical (also gnomish), and this makes them suitable for any class and background. Ysoki also tend to be willing to whatever task is assigned to them, as they are hyper-confident in their own abilities and strengths.

The sheer abundance of Ysoki across the Pact World planets means that there is a very high probability of two ysoki being related to each other. It's interesting to think about that idea every time that two ysoki would meet; are their memories sharp enough to retain and recognize their extended, extended, extended family? I also love the concept of a squadron of ysoki pilots or a pirate/scavenging fleet of decorated pilots soaring through the blackness of space. The more I read about them, the more I enjoy the ysoki and how they share aspects of other fantasy races. I've already commented on humans and gnomes, but their impulsive nature and naming conventions SCREAM goblin - the top of my all-time list. Ysoki will be a real treat to play, and many players will find the 'grab-bag' nature of the race to be exciting and refreshing.

Don't forget that legacy races are also an option if that's more up your alley; I merely wanted to focus on the brand new races in Starfinder, as they are unique in the idea that players have yet to breathe life into them. Orcs, elves, and dwarves have been used in countless game systems, and I feel that it's time to give these newbies a try before settling back into something that's more comfortable. In a subsequent post, I will describe a loose character concept for each race including class, theme, and a vague background. These can help serve as diving boards into a more elaborate brainstorming session and will hopefully unearth other ideas on how to create some awesome characters!
