windows/linux rant
unrelated to SMT or anything on my blog currently I guess...
I keep seeing the "prep for windows 11" thing show up on my computer, and it upsets me every time that you have to have a microsoft account to install it.
windows 10 reaches end of support next year~~
I hope by then the computer I"m using will actually let me run linux on it instead of an outdated windows os....
I want to run linux on this machine so bad but whenever I try to install it, it seems to install fine and dandy
and then it won't boot
I've snooped around in the BIOS, disabled the "smart startup" or "secure startup" or whatever else I thought was borking the boot for linux.
but it still won't boot~~~
and sadly i've got games on here that only work on windows anyway.
I'd much rather be able to stay relatively safe online and maintain an OS, than play the games I bought on steam....
something is preventing linux from booting on this machine, it upsets me when I think about it, and it upsets me more when I try to install linux and it goes fine, but then doesn't boot
cause I have to take the time to reinstall windows again.....

Younger people ask me, how exactly is it that Hewlett-Packard, the printer manufacturer, ended up taking over the world? After checking out the window for the presence of their all-hearing, man-slicing surveillance drones, I tell them. It was this, or they'd force the President to maintain a fleet of inkjet printers.
At first, things weren't so bad. We started to roll back the whole "paperless office" scam of the 90s. At one point, a bunch of toughs all zooted out on free government-provided fuser oil smashed the door to the data-centre where the False Minds existed, their pseudo-artificial-intelligence a clear threat to a world where being able to print was essential. That was a lot of fun, stepping on a bunch of scattered RAM in the middle of the street and knowing it was so close to being able to feel pain.
Then it became much clearer how things were going to really go from now on. Whole forests were felled in an instant to feed the new demand for vessels to contain our minds. Libraries suddenly became stuffed with hastily constructed bookshelves, their once-silent printers leaping back to life and erupting orgasmic volleys of paper. And everyone, everywhere, was looking for yellow ink, no matter what they printed. It's been twenty-five years since then.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining about the dominance of the printer giants. Sure, the amount of fatal papercuts has skyrocketed. Especially now that the ambulances aren't allowed to use their radios anymore, not unless they're connected to a fax machine. And pretty much everything has to be turned on and off a few times before it starts to work, otherwise it just blinks a stupid little light that doesn't mean anything.
All this, though, is worth it. Because as soon as Hewlett-Packard took control of the world governments, they took their first acts of violence out on their competition. Had the guy who made the shitty paper loader for the Lexmarks executed. And the rush from that was enough to get me through having to pay 25 cents a poop for the rest of my life. Sorry you missed it.

Homebaked Bread Mod
I like bread. I want my Sims to be able to make bread without needing multiple ovens, but also have to knead dough in the process.
So I made this mod - a new "Bake Bread..." interaction that allows you to bake bread recipes using the Baker's Station kneading animations, but done so on a counter, and then cooked in a regular oven.
This mod is a pure script mod that adds the new interaction to fridges, and includes 4 bread recipes that can be cooked in this way:
Homebaked Sourdough
Homebaked Rye
Homebaked Baguette
Homebaked Challah
All have ingredients Egg and Flour from Echoweavers wheat and flour mod if you have it.
The first 3 are cloned versions of the Baker's Station's breads (they don't affect the original ones), made to be compatible with this mod.
The challah is a cloned version of my challah recipe converted from TS4, made compatible with this mod (also does not affect the original, see below if you don't have the Challah & Matzo Ball Soup Mod).
There are some technicalities about these recipes that make things work a bit differently to normal, but I'll put that under the cut, as well as information on making Homebaked-Bread-Compatible recipes.

REQUIRES the Baker's Station item from the store, for both the kneading animations as well as the bread recipe models. But it won't crash the game without it ;)
Notes on these recipes:
For these recipes to only show up under the mod's interaction, they are not "Learnable" recipes. So they work similar to the store recipes in that they can't be learnt from a recipe book, they don't count towards a Sim's learnt recipes, and I think a few other small things which I'm not sure of. Shouldn't be a big deal but I just wanted to mention that.
Specifically for the Challah, my original version of the recipe has a level 2 recipe book. You can have both the original and the HB recipe installed as they are technically separate recipes, but the regular version (under the EA cooking interaction) will use the original cooking process and require the recipe book, whereas the HB version will just require skill level 2 and will use the kneading animations. If you don't have the original challah mod installed, you'll need the challahFiles package as well.
The cooking process looks the same for all HB recipes - Sims get the dough from the fridge, knead it on a counter, put it in a baking dish, and cook it in the oven. The only difference are the raw/cooked models used in the baking dish.
Adding new Homebaked Bread recipes:
Mostly the same as making regular custom recipes, just with a few extra steps to make it an HB recipe.
Make your recipe as normal with CC Loader (alternatively add your recipe to the recipes XML included in this mod)
The Recipe_Key must include "HBBread"
Learnable set to False
Must have a custom cooking process which Recipe_Class refers to
For the cooking process, I suggest using one of mine as a base as there are only a couple of things that need changing then: The line Models contains the only things that can be customised for the cooking process - the raw dough model in the baking tray, the cooked bread in the baking tray, and the burnt bread in the baking tray. The easiest thing is to have the first as the dough (WOFridgeDough), and the second and third as the recipe's serving model with the default and burnt material states. But if you want to have extra models, you can of course.

For NoFridgeShopping simmers, there's a tuning value in the zoeoe_BakeBreadMod_Tuning XML to turn on NoFridgeShopping. As you might expect, with this set to True, Sims will require the ingredients to bake the breads, and they will be greyed out without them. You can either change this with S3PE or NRaas Retuner under Sims3.Gameplay.Objects.zoeoe.BakeBreadMod.Main.
Fun fact: yet another mistake in EA's Baker's Station recipe data - the sourdough and rye breads have the same textures (both use rye ones) because they didn't set the material state name for the sourdough bread. My HB versions use the right textures, but if you want to fix the BS ones, just change the "breadRoundRye" to "breadRoundSourdough" where the sourdough single and group models are defined in the CCMerged RMLS resource.

i know this looks like nothing to those who don't know but for me this is the culmination of my slaving away for 3 days lmao the homebrew i'm running, gbarunner3, is a virtual machine that uses the GBA hardware in DS Mode to run GBA games with a higher layer of customization and access to traditional DS hardware. an example of something similar that comes to mind is Nintendont, the gamecube loader for Wii. Technically speaking, the vWii on the Wii U is also this concept, albeit underutilized.
anyway, it's intended to run ROMs off the SD card exclusively. Meaning that it cannot run actual cartridges. I wanted to use my pokemon carts alongside gbarunner3's wireless emulation to facilitate wireless adapter features without having the more expensive GBA hardware and peripherals, for an example.
i spent the last few days learning a bit of how the DS hardware and the codebase works, and trying to implement the option of using actual hardware than only ROMs off the SD card.
the DS only has 4mb of memory! and most GBA ROMs are between 8mb-32mb. how gbarunner3 gets the ROM loaded, is that it has 1mb worth of cached ROM loaded at a time and dynamically loads a ROM region based on when the game's code needs to access it. learning how to deal with memory in the context of the SLOT2 data bus in a codebase designed around SD card caching...
It was very annoying! I had no way to debug anything other than forcing a crash to tell when I got a certain result. it effectively was trial and error for hours and hours of blind crash debugging. the dev of gbarunner3 uses an IS-Nitro development kit to do his debugging. I didn't have that lmao
this is me oversimplifying everything incredibly because it's very hard to describe but i'm very proud of it. i'm sure it looks like nothing from an outsider's perspective though but i think it opens the gateway for some cool features that you'd otherwise have to use digital-only ROMs for.
I have a lot more to do but the fact i got this far on a whim is really neat!

hello baldurs gate 3 community again: This time im talking about modding!
hello adventurers and shifty-eyed people, I bring to you some important stuff. Mod compilations! Below the cut, if you are interested, I have compiled a few things for what I think the bg3 tumblr modding community wants (based on me being in the tag for a month straight). Things I have compiled include: - Super basic install of baldur's gate 3 mod manager (and a bit of vortex) (9 Easy Steps!) - My OWN special "Computer helper" mod bundle with super easy installations (helps it run on my piece of crap laptop who hates me so much but I love her <3) - Companion and player mods (visuals only, and like de-ab-ing and stuff, I'm not going around adding all the extra eye colour mods) INCLUDING TRANS TOP SCARS AND DADBOD MODS + MORE - Some personal favourite mods that really helped enhance my experience. HOW TO GET THE MOD LOADER FOR BG3 IN 3 EASY STEPS
go to the github download page and scroll down until you see the first downloadable file that reads "BG3ModManager_Lastest.zip"
extract the file into an accessible area (your downloads folder should work fine, I just put it on my desktop) (just anything that won't require you to give admin permissions to download it. I would also keep this off Local Disc (C:) for convenience) You can use any free extractor program, 7zip works, i used to use Peazip and now I use Breezip and that works well.
Tada! You should have an open folder in your extracted location. 2 things may happen here: You will get the extracted folder with the other documents inside. Congrats, you're done! If you have an extracted folder with ONLY the .exe file in it, go back into the zip file and drag the other files into the folder. This should fix the problem, all files from the zip need to be there to work.
(OPTIONAL) you CAN use Vortex mod manager to manage your bg3 mods on there, in which case any nexusmods mod will have a direct download button for you. Personally I have my subnautica mods loaded from there so bg3 is unavailable.
HOW TO MOD BALDURS GATE 6 IN EASY STEPS + SCRIPT EXTENDER
Make sure you have Baldur's Gate 3 Installed. I have it on steam, I don't know how to help with EA, sorry.
open your file explorer/documents. Go to Admin -> AppData -> Local -> Larian Studios* -> Baldur's Gate 3 (leave launcher alone). Create a mods folder if you don't already have one, but one should have been created on your first bootup. DO NOT CLOSE THIS TAB. THIS TAB STAYS OPEN UNTIL YOU ARE DONE MODDING. * I also just search Larian Studios in Local Disc (C:) but that does take some time to load
Congrats, you're ready to mod! Now, most good mods will need something called the Baldur's Gate 3 Script Extender. You can find the download page here, and this time you're going to hit the green "code" button. Ignore everything else. Hit download zip
Extract the file again, but this time into Local Disc (C:) -> Program Files (86x) -> Steam -> Steamapps -> common -> Baldur's Gate 3 -> bin* ** * MAKE SURE to extract it to the bin folder. Some other mesh and texture mods use the data bin, so confusing them is bad. ** you CAN directly extract the folder to the bin, but I personally find it easier to extract the zip back into downloads, then open my other file explorer and click and drag the whole extracted file into the bin folder
The fun part begins! Go find some mods you like (nexusmods mostly, gamebanana MAY have some). Extract folder to your mods folder in larian studios -> baldur's gate 3 -> mods. ONLY DRAG THE .PCK FILE. YOU DO NOT NEED ANY OTHER FILES UNLESS THE MOD MAKER SAYS SO.
USING THE MOD LOADER: you are done with file explorers! Go ahead and boot up the bg3modmanager.exe file from earlier. Any INACTIVE MODS must be CLICKED AND DRAGGED over to the ACTIVE MODS side. i've said this like a quadrillion times already but damn i hate the way the minecraft community's been obfuscating the game's mechanics for the past few years.
like, controls. people used to just call in-game actions by their names (or at least something vaguely resembling them). but somewhere along the line, they stopped. they stopped calling things by their names and started calling them by their default keybinds. they don't crouch or sneak any more. they ""shift"". they don't go into third person view any more. they go into """"F5 mode"""". like, i could *maybe* understand saying 'right click' instead of 'use item', since 'right click' is an already accepted term in other contexts. but saying 'Q' instead of 'drop item' *while talking about how you've remapped your drop key* is fucking piss behavior. most people don't even fucking play with a keyboard!!
but, onto the thing i'm actually here to post about:
can we stop conflating mods and behavior packs? they are not the same thing. well, i mean, technically, behavior packs are mods, on account of modifying the game. but they're mods in the way that resource packs are mods. because they're basically resource packs. all a resource pack or a behavior pack is is a collection of data that the minecraft engine is programmed to interpret in a specific way. contrast this with actual Mods, which are sequences of instructions and programming that require a mod loader to insert into the game's existing instructions and programming.
if y'all can differentiate between mods and data packs then you can definitely differentiate between mods and behavior packs. a 'behavior pack' is literally just what bedrock edition calls a data pack.
and for the love of FUCK, stop calling it fucking pocket edition! you are only confusing people!!!!!

this is so surreal~~

are you telling me I've been installing linux on this computer wrong this entire time??
WE BACK ON LINUX BABY~~!!
all I had to do on install was just......
make grub boot from dev/sda1 instead of dev/sda
dev/sdb was the hard drive all of my data was stored on and if I didn't touch that, nothing would happen.
the cool thing here is that mounting the device here is password protected to actually mount and view the data. as opposed to windows having it mounted at all times.
this was simpler than I thought it was and now I feel really stupid...
Linux mint debian edition 6 lets go~~~~~~!!
I'm so excited~~!! come to find out that I've been installing the grub boot loader in the wrong place this entire time.....
*happy screaming*
now idk if I'm smarter than I think or dumber than I think. cause it could be both....
I didn't need to tinker with the bios at all~~ tho I am curious as to what it looks like now. maybe the windows boot loader isn't there anymore and is just the linux one?

I have a digimon question: If Gumdramon, after eating Visdom's arm, he absorbed the wizard's magic into his data. So, does that mean he's now a dragon/wizard type Digimon? and that his and Arresterdramon's attacks will acquire magical attacks (like Wizardmon and Wisemon)? I really imagine Gumdramon with a wizard's outfit and a hat happily casting spells, just like Harry Potter >w<

Let's see. No, Gumdramon didn't become a dragon/wizard digimon (although that option sounds so cool^^'), because his species doesn't have data that naturally allows him to use magic (it doesn't have that possibility due to his evolutionary line). What caused him to have devoured that arm was that his program was no longer compatible with an xros loader to evolve (more reason why the xros loader gamma is vital for Tagiru and Arresterdramon)
Now if there will be any technique that ends up using magic… we'll have to see?
Gumdramon in a wizard outfit would look so cute! The bad thing is that he would be a bad student
