I’m very happy after my mom helped me order from Amazon.com last year. It’s supposed to be as my Christmas gift suggestion until today. I also have another one I’ll be looking forward to, but have to wait for another month or two. In the meantime, hope I’ll taking care of this external hard drive of mine. I do use googledocs because it's convenient to be able to access it everywhere, and on my shitty little 10 year old chromebook, etc.
However, I also have a 4TB backup external hardrive that ALL my writing, marketing, author business, cover designs, and formatted files are kept.
I want to get a second one so I have a backup of the backup, but you cannot easily "lose" a backup hard drive or SSD of that size. It sits on my desk like a brick.
Did it cost a pretty penny? Yes. But I also don't have to worry (too much) about losing everything I've worked so hard on.
My computer died in 2021. And I couldn't afford to replace it or repair it. But I could plug my external drive into my laptop and have access to all my files.
I am begging people to use LibreOffice and personal storage devices like hard drives or USB sticks instead of relying 100% on Google Docs. LibreOffice is free and open-source, it saves files to your own computer, and it lets you save as many different file types. You can write in it, format ebooks in it, and do everything you might possibly need to do as a writer.
"Oh, but I'll lose my USB stick--" Fine, back things up in whatever cloud you use as a form of extra protection, but you should also try your absolute damnedest to also put them on some form of storage that isn't a cloud.
I know it's not accessible to everyone, but if you at all have the ability, don't rely on shit that lives on other people's computers. Especially with everything going on with AI theft and aggressive censorship of adult media. If you don't store your files on your own personal computer that you have control over, your files aren't fully yours, and they're at the whims of whoever owns the cloud.
Learn where your files are stored and how to access them. Get into the habit of backing up your files to your own personal storage. Even if you're not up for intense tech research and you don't care about how the computer actually works, please stop letting your art live in corporate clouds.

Don’t have room on your puter to save all your favorite online stuff? Behold external storage!
The little 64 gig thumb drive was $10 on sale, the USB powered one holds 4 terabytes, the big one which needs external power holds 12 terabytes.
I even have the internal drive from a past laptop in a case that I’ve used as a back up.
Why yes, I’ve survived several BSODs, what males you ask?

Update on lost hard drive
On January 2nd (no way to start the New Year!) my external hard drive gave up the ghost. I found a company that says if it’s on a hard drive they can save it, copy it to a new drive, and send it back to you (for a price), The next day I mailed it off FedEx and MYSTERIOUSLY between it’s pick-up point and hub ON A PRIORITY OVERNIGHT DELIVERY, the package was empty when it got to the hub. Sound Suspicious? I had to prove to FedEx that I actually had bought a HD! Currently have a claim in, as does the recovery company, since they paid for my shipping to not get a package. No word about how much FedEX will pay me for the lost drive. That same week (no way to start a New Year) my paper shredder died, and I dropped my phone and it broke in two! Can we say ‘Mercury Retrograde’? I have since bought a new phone, a new paper shredder, and a new external HD, which HP Smart Friends, connected, formatted, hooked up, and connected me to the cloud.
My book manuscripts, tarot deck designs, and peripherals to those are on thumb drives, but everything I had on the external HD is now lost.
