The Bolivian masses flooded the streets of La Paz and sent the military packing, crushing an attempted right-wing coup.

It appears a SECOND coup may be underway in Bolivia right now.

Not entirely confirmed, but Evo Morales (who was ousted as president after a right wing putsch a couple years ago) is calling it a coup and he'd know. Current president Luis Arce is decrying "irregular military activity" in the capital of La Paz including a major mobilization of military police and armored vehicles. He's asked the military to "respect democracy."

Not really any English language coverage of this yet, but it it all seems to have started at 3pm local time, not even an hour ago so that isn't surprising.

Highlighting the boom in electric vehicles, the Lancer would start out offering an EV version of it along with gasoline variants. The Lancer would offer the EV, Lancer series, as well as the introduction of the Evolution series with the launch of the Evo XI. The Ev would have a dual and single motor option as well as be either front wheel drive or all wheel drive with an impressive range and power. Later the other Lancer models will be introduced on this blog.

TRC Cars

Thought I would give my interpretation of what cars I think the characters in trc drive because I wanted to draw them, and because I think the cars are a very important part of the books and I think they say a lot about their owners.

These are specific models that I chose based on the descriptions in the books. None are explicitly canon (bar Gansey's obviously) and some of these are completely random guesses bc there is so little information about the car. This post is also just a compilation of car descriptions in trc.

Disclaimer I do not know anything about cars so don't come for me.

GANSEY:

[... ] Gansey’s hell-tinged ’73 Camaro slicked with black stripes.

1973 Chevrolet Camaro - Orange with black stripes.

Iconic. Will go down in history.

RONAN:

Ronan Lynch’s shark-nosed BMW pulled in behind the Camaro, its normally glossy charcoal paint dusted green with pollen.

His smile was thin and sharp. If his BMW was shark-like, it had learned how from him.

Niall Lynch was handsome and charismatic and rich and mysterious, and one day, he was dragged from his charcoal-gray BMW and beaten to death with a tire iron.

2008 BMW M3 E90 - Sparkling Graphite Metallic.

Originally had another model, but then found out it was released in 2020 which is wayy too late so switched to this older one. Was a bit confused about the colour because Gansey refers to it as charcoal-grey and Ronan calls it black, so I looked up the specific colours this model was released in and chose from those. As I believe that trc takes place in the early 2010s, this is a newer car.

DECLAN:

Then Ronan grabbed Declan’s suit coat and used it to throw him onto the mirrorlike hood of Declan’s Volvo.

“Not the fucking car!” snarled Declan, his lip bloody.

2006 Volvo S60 - Silver

Just seems like exactly the type of plain boring unspecial car Declan would have. Chose silver because it's referred to as mirrorlike and that also makes so much sense for Declan. Not really sure when Declan got this car but I think 2006 is safe enough.

NOAH:

Czerny had pulled up in his red Mustang. He hadn’t gotten out of the car.

In the clearing, entirely out of place, was an abandoned car. A red Mustang. Newer model.

Bling,” Ronan remarked, kicking one of the tires. The Mustang had massive, expensive wheels, and now that Gansey looked more closely at the car, he saw that it was covered with aftermarket details: big rims, new spoiler, dark window tint, gaping exhaust.

2004 Ford Mustang GT - Red

This one was quite straightforward. I know it was called a newer model and 2004 isn't really that new if the books are set between 2010 and 2013 but it's Gansey's POV and he's obviously been exposed to a lot of older cars so from his perspective 2004 is new. Obviously it would look different with all the alterations.

ADAM:

"Adam, you want a piece-of-shit car? Save me the tow."

His new car was of uncertain make and model year. It was a two-door something and smelled of automotive body fluids. The hood, passenger-side door, and right rear fender were clearly from three entirely different cars. It was a stick shift.

“Look, just flash your lights if something goes wrong,” Gansey said, standing before the open door of his black Suburban. He ordinarily kept it here, but no one really trusted Adam’s new vehicle to make the drive across the state.

2001 Honda Accord EX Coupe - silver

I really don't know what I'm doing with this one. My only justification is that it's a Coupe, a Honda, really old, and was sold in the US.

KAVINSKY:

Kavinsky’s infamous Mitsubishi Evo was a thing of boyish beauty, moon-white with a voracious black mouth of a grille and an immense splattered graphic of a knife on either side of the body.

The Mitsubishi wailed and shuddered a bit. It was a glorious and hideous piece of work.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X - white

This was the easiest. I think this is probably the exact car Maggie was describing when she wrote the book. She says that it's an Evo which is already really specific, and "voracious black mouth" perfectly describes the Evo 10.

THE GRAY MAN:

The Gray Man hated his current rental car. He got the distinct impression it hadn’t been handled enough by humans when it was young, and now would never be pleasant to be around. Since he’d picked it up, it had already tried to bite him several times and had spent a considerable amount of time resisting his efforts to achieve the speed limit.

Also, it was champagne. Ridiculous color for a car.

1991 Nissan Figaro - Topaz Mist

This one was really hard and I'm completely guessing but this does look like the kind of car The Gray Man would hate. Definitely will be making another post about this because it's actually hilarious how much he hates it.

BLUE/300 FOX WAY:

Give her forty minutes and she could parallel park the Fox Way Ford in any place you liked.

There was only one car at 300 Fox Way, and so it was in high demand.

2004 Ford Fiesta - Blue

This one was also super hard. Literally all we know about this car is that it's a Ford. Inferred that it's a cheaper car and therefore probably older so this is what I came up with. I chose blue because I just think it fits Fox Way's whole vibe.

He wanted to make her look pathetic, as she feebly kicked her legs in resistance. But despite her loss in dignity she refused to shout out the Fascist slogans he demanded. This just enraged the sadistic bullies more.

They threw her onto the back of the motorcycle and abducted her as though she was a sack of potatoes. The Communist Party Secretary of Cochabamba was held prisoner at the motorcycle club for three days in nothing but her panties. With the almost mythological status an actual Communist Party woman demoness she-beast holds in the far right imagination, they reveled in keeping her in a pathetic state. Her continued resistance lead the beatings to escalate from humiliating spankings to a brutal flogging of her buttocks, thighs, and back. Despite the pain and suffering she endured, she decisively refuted the male fantasy that a woman's defiance can be broken by taking away her dignity.

In the end, the design closely follows in the tradition of Pagani - the vehicle best represented in the Huayra Roadster design: the Zonda Cinque Roadster.

Lula talks about coup attempt in Bolivia: 'Coups have never worked'

'It was planned and led by the army commander,' said former Bolivian President Evo Morales in social media

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) spoke out about the attempted coup in Bolivia on Wednesday (25). "As I am a lover of democracy, I want democracy to prevail in Latin America. Coups have never worked," said the Brazilian president.

Lula asked Itamaraty, as the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is popularly known, for information to assess Brazil's next steps. "I want information. I've asked Foreign Minister Mauro [Vieira] to call Bolivia, to call the [Bolivian] president, to call the Brazilian ambassador, so we can be sure and take a stance."

According to the Brazilian news website G1, Lula has summoned Minister Mauro Vieira and his special advisor, Celso Amorim, to a meeting. Lula intends to assess the situation in Bolivia and, if possible, contact the country's president, Luís Arce.

At around 3 pm (local time), the Bolivian army, headed by General Juan José Zuñiga, deployed its troops in front of the federal government headquarters in La Paz, the country's capital. Then, Arce went to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and announced that the maneuver was irregular.

Bolivia’s capital of La Paz is reeling in the wake of an attempted coup as troops led by a top general rammed the doors of the government palace in tumultous scenes that threatened to drag the South American democracy into chaos.

Military forces led by army chief General Juan Jose Zuniga appeared to take control of president Luis Arce’s government by seizing control of the town square and unleashing tear gas on protesters who flooded the streets.

General Zuniga vowed to “restore democracy”, replae and cabinet and free political prisoners, but was condemned opposition leaders as it became clear he had little political support.

Mr Arce refused to bow to the pressure and named a new army commander, who immediately ordered troops to stand down, ending the rebellion.

The president’s supporters rapidly came to his aid and rushed the square outside the palace, waving Bolivian flags, singing the national anthem and cheering.

Mr Arce said: “Here we are, firm, in the presidential palace, to confront any coup attempt.”

General Zuniga and alleged co-conspirator former navy Vice Admiral Juan Arnez Salvador were arrested by authorities.

Government minister Eduardo del Castillo told journalists: “Their goal was to overturn the democratically elected authority,”

The short-lived rebellion followed months of mounting tensions between Arce and his one-time ally, left-wing former president Evo Morales.

Mr Morales, the country’s first Indigenous president, was forced to resign after 14 years in power in 2019 after mass protests against him.

He has since returned from political exile and is threatening to challenge Mr Arce in the 2025 primaries, which has caused a widening rift in their ruling socialist party.

Further fueling tensions in the country is the ongoing economic crisis, with the country’s foreign currency reserves diminishing, its natural gas exports plummeting and its currency peg collapsing.

As police in riot gear set up outside the presidential palace, Bolivians queued at ATMs, formed long lines outside petrol stations and emptied shelves in grocery stores.

Flanked by the newly appointed military chiefs late Wednesday, defense minister Edmundo Novillo sought to reassure the rattled public and shed light on what had happened.

The turmoil began earlier this week, Mr Novillo said, when Mr Arce dismissed General Zuniga in a private meeting on Tuesday over the army chief’s threats to arrest Morales if he proceeded with his presidential bid in 2025.

In their meeting, Novillo said that General Zuniga gave officials no indication he was preparing to seize power.

Just hours later tailed by armored vehicles and supporters, General Zuniga burst into government headquarters and declared that he was sick of political infighting. “The armed forces intend to restore the democracy,” he said.

Members of the country’s fragmented opposition, which General Zuniga claimed to support, rejected the coup before it was clear it had failed.

Prosecutors will seek the maximum sentence of 15 to 20 years in prison for General Zuniga on charges of “attacking the constitution,” he said.

“This grants control to the military and erodes democracy and is an important signpost that the problems of the 2019 coup have not been addressed,” said Kathryn Ledebur, director of the Andean Information Network, a Bolivia-based research group. “Bolivia’s democracy remains very fragile, and definitely a great deal more fragile today than it was yesterday.”

When Maduro couldn’t get the Venezuelan Assembly to call a snap election, he simply established a new legislature by fiat to do so. The opposition boycotted this illegitimate election, which is how Guaidó became the constitutionally and internationally recognized president. Yet the Blame America First crowd imagines the consequent unrest to have been a “CIA coup”, not an autogolpe on Maduro’s part. They know nothing about the situation save to reflexively side with anyone who says mean things about the USA.

In Honduras, the president wanted to convene a constitutional convention. The legislature said no. The president convened the convention anyway. There was no answer to a rogue executive in the Honduran constitution, so the US was asked to mediate. The president stepped down and was succeeded by a social democrat. The right-wing government came to power in a free and fair (if regrettable) election. But the Blame America First crowd doesn’t know these basic facts. They prefer to imagine Hillary Clinton swooped in with magic coup juice.

Early in his administration, Evo Morales called for and signed presidential two-term limits. He then violated these limits, the courts he’d stocked with loyalists calling them a “human rights violation”. After increasing election irregularities, he finally stepped down, though his party, now even more violently repressive, remained in power. Yet the Blame America First crowd think this was all some conspiracy by the US, World Bank & IMF b/c Morales had paid off Bolivia’s debts.

With its comical claims to the barren rocks of the Spratleys and Paracels, China is infringing on the exclusive economic zones of five neighboring states, terrorizing their fishermen and coast guards while exploiting resources of less powerful states. Yet of course the Blame America First crowd considers this all to be cynical “Sinophobia” to defend American hegemony against an emerging Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere led by the PRC. Never mind what the people of “greater East Asia” actually want.

In Yemen, Arab Spring protestors overthrew the corrupt regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh then conspired with the Iranian proxy Ansar Allah (the “Houthis”) to reclaim power, usurping the legitimate democratizing government in Sanaa. Yet the Blame America First crowd calls the war against theocrat pirate rebels who’ve reintroduced slavery a “war on Yemen”, legitimizing the patently illegitimate.

In Ukraine, Russia’s proxies rebelled and Russia invaded not because of NATO expansion, but because Ukraine was seeking closer ties with the European Union. Ukraine wanted to clean up its gangster- and oligarch-ridden government and seek closer economic ties to Europe. But the self-determination of the Ukrainian people and overcoming kleptocrats is immaterial to the Blame America First crowd, since Kremlin propaganda is so much more compelling to them.

Time and time again, left, right, or weird (LaRouchists and conspiracists), the Blame America First crowd chooses a bespoke, artisanal narrative over basic facts, of which they, despite their preening confidence, remain utterly ignorant. Would it be too much for the Blame America First crowd to set aside their Foucault and Chomsky, and at least, base their criticisms of US policy on reality rather than on half-truth and fabricated fictions?
