I have such a huge space in my heart for Nicky Hemmick.

No, his actions of kissing neil are not excusable. I know that, but his past strikes a cord that is heartbreaking.

Nicky Hemmick, who was shunned and cast out by his parents for who he loves. Who was sent to a gay conversion camp, most likely forced to be with women, and then pretended to be straight and date women just to appease his parents. Who tried so hard to reclaim his parent’s love and was so lost and lonely and empty that he wanted to end it all. Who escaped to Germany just to get away and finally found love and acceptance.

Who gave up the life he worked so hard for to raise his two vulnerable cousins at nineteen years old. Who, instead of going back to Germany, joined them for 5 years in college just so they’d go in the first place.

Nicky, who despite his faults and nosiness, treats Neil like family and tries so hard to get in with the upperclassmen. Teaches his cousins German. Worked two jobs to stay afloat. Bought them a home. Was mugged outside a club. Stands up for the twins despite how they’ve treated him in return. Has faith that his mother may love him if he just shows her how well he’s doing. Who lets Aaron get away with his mean comments and puts up with Andrew’s violence when he could easily drop out and go back to Germany if he really wanted.

Some people see Nicky’s background as lesser when comparing the Foxes, but Nicky was drug through hell and then willingly went back for the twins. Nicky has persevered.

aftg au where everything's the same except the twins changed their last names to "klose" because nicky already married erik in germany, and they changed their names after he adopted them

the twins have a deep and unreasonable dislike for erik klose. at first it was bc he was the only thing that could convince nicky to leave them and go back to germany (and yes, he did try) but when nicky stayed it became much more petty.

they definitely didn’t have a good first impression. from erik’s point of view, his bf left an incredibly toxic family that messed him up a lot and was finally starting to heal in germany, only to have that taken away by a car accident. from erik’s point of view, nicky would be dropping everything to take on debt, two jobs, his parents, a minyard out of juvie and a minyard on drugs. nicky was so young and taking care of two traumatized teenagers is hard, no matter how much they deserve a second chance. so yes, maybe the twins did overhear erik trying to convince nicky on skype in the first week of him moving to the us to come back. and yes, when nicky refused, it might have opened them up to him a little more. but they certainly didn’t like that little german bitch that made nicky stare at the wall for 5 minutes after the wall and cry.

the first time erik visited them was before the foxes and the twins for the first time joined in a common goal: freeze erik out. all he got from them was glares and frigid silence, and yes he did want to take nicky far far away from america and these 16 year olds with death glares, but he also trusted his boyfriend. so he endured their attempts to shut him out (literally they tried to lock him out of the house) and met their hostility with an easy smile. this made them hate him more.

listen, the twins are possessive of nicky. they don’t show their love well but they will lash out at anyone that is a perceived threat to them. whenever erik and nicky fight? boy do they make erik suffer. they’re not great at comforting nicky when he’s crying, but andrew easily calls erik from a burner phone when he knows it’s 3 am in germany, only to hang up immediately and call again. aaron signs erik up for a bunch of telemarketer calls and spam reports all his social media accounts. it’s not much but nicky never finds out and that’s enough.

not to say erik just takes it. he’s a strong advocater for nicky rights and when he comes to the us he will not hesitate to lecture the twins about their treatment of nicky. he has valid points but they ignore that and let it fuel their righteous anger of “who’s this asshole that comes in and tells us how to treat nicky, we know him better than he does” (do they?)

when they’re all older and more settled in their skin the twins stop viewing erik as a threat, but they still grumble in annoyance or roll their eyes whenever he’s around. nicky loves it bc they look so much like brothers when they do that.

the twins have a dislike for erik, but it’s not a dislike for him it’s a deep love for nicky. he was the twins first advocate, and this is their way of having his back. they’re defending nicky against a false threat, but they care enough to defend.

it’s a like. transition process. in that like. nobody stuck with aaron, right? like everybody has left him. he’s with his mom in california, and he sees his cousin and uncle and aunt sometimes but mostly when they move to south carolina. and he finds out he has a brother, and he fights with his mom abt it, and it’s the worst day of his life, to the degree that he’s even told nicky that. and he writes to andrew, like maybe they could be each other’s, hoping that maybe they could have each other, and he gets a resounding fuck off. and he doesn’t give up, but then andrew is in juvie, and he’s back in south carolina. and like. later, when he’s older, he’ll get it abt nicky, but at the time, he’s a kid getting beat on and his uncle and aunt and cousin are the people who are nicest to him and they’re not seeing it. and then nicky’s gone, and he NEEDS to be gone, but it’s not like 14yo aaron knows or gets that. and then he meets his brother bc luther makes it happen, and andrew says he’s going to come back with them. and he gets a brother, tentatively, while he’s trying to keep this secret of what his mom does to him. and then his mom is dead, and his tentative relationship with his brother is shattered, and he thinks he killed her for giving him up. his mother gave him up, and took him back in a moment of guilt/indecision/whatever she said on the phone that day to the officer, to aaron in the fight, whatever that truth was. and his brother didn’t want him, until he did, but he thinks that did was to get revenge on their mom. which it was, but not for the reason he thought, not at sixteen. and luther and maria and nicky didn’t see what was going on until andrew-as-aaron showed up at their door, covered in bruises. and nicky was gone.

and nicky comes back, still a teenager, but old enough to take care of them, and he does. but aaron is sixteen and everyone around him is dead or has left or hasn’t wanted him. and nicky has a new life. and nicky is going to leave again. the only one who came back for real, and erik means he’s going to leave again.

but adult aaron, aaron-post-reconciling-with-andrew, aaron who knows why andrew did it, aaron who is learning that these deep scars from sharp claws are actually marks of poorly communicated love, a need to hold on — an aaron who can see nicky coming back as not a mark of leaving, and leaving-to-come, but that he’s always going to come back when needed. that aaron can see, i think, what erik did for nicky, when nicky had nobody, and what that in turn did for everyone. and the man aaron hadn’t said a civil word to for at least four years prior to canon is the person whose small domino of loving the best person aaron knows is what saved everyone
