aaron very tentatively asks katelyn out in winter of their freshman year but she's busy that evening so she can't do it so he tries to cover for himself by saying "yeah, don't worry, i actually had something tonight with, uh..." *panic* "...kevin."

and kate just kind of looks at him like "with kevin?" so aaron, thinking as fast as he can, says "yeah. it's an exy thing." and katelyn decides to play along and says "ohh, kevin day. like the exy player. for the ravens." and she's fully aware aaron's bullshitting but aaron's in too deep to quit now so he goes ".....yeah." and walks out of that conversation like literally any other lie would've been believable thinking he has lost any chance of this girl ever thinking he's not an idiot again.

and then the winter banquet happens and kevin day transfers to the foxes as an assistant coach and their next class katelyn comes running up to aaron like "i thought you were kidding!" and aaron's like "yeah so did i."

“Okay, when he gets back, don’t say anything, don’t look at him, let him come to you, and if he doesn’t, just ignore him.” Aaron was nervously wringing his hands, pacing the kitchen while they waited for the pizza.

Kate nodded along, she and Andrew still did not get along, but they were civil, the past couple of years had allowed them to adjust to each others presence.

She was friends with Nicky and Neil and hoped they would be a buffer between Andrew and her unexpected few days in Columbia before she headed out with Aaron.

They had had to take a later flight but the dorms were closed so Aaron had made the executive decision to have her stay with his family for the extra two days. 

“I know how your brother is, but it’s just for a night, I promise it’ll be okay.” Nerves still churned in her gut. She hoped she was right…

When Andrew walked into the house he was met with a living room full of people. He knew his family was spending part of the break together.

Neil, Nicky, and Aaron, the house’s usual occupants, were expected. But Aaron’s cheerleader had joined them. Sending a silent nod to his family in greeting, he purposely kept his eyes off the additional redhead.

He dropped his bag by the door and grabbed a slice of pizza from the counter. He filled up his water bottle and made to exit the kitchen to head to his room. He could feel the quiet tension, not even Nicky filling up the awkward silence like he normally would. 

“How was your drive?” Neil broke the quiet.

“Kevin was annoying as usual.” He had dropped the striker off at the airport so he could spend his break in California with the frenchie and the human embodiment of sunshine.

He motioned to Neil to follow him upstairs. As Neil passed he squeezed Andrew’s hand and headed up, Andrew followed a few steps behind before he stopped at the bottom of the stairs. 

“Hello, Katelyn.” With that, he moved up the stairs and away from the commotion he was sure to have created.

based on an interaction i had with my sisters boyfreind (i'm andrew in this situation), he stayed with us for a weekend and the only words i spoke to him the whole time where hello and his name. the conversation between aaron and katelyn is one my sister had with her *awful* boyfreind before i got there because apparently i fill my role as indimidating older sibling too well...

i love katelyn this isn't to imply i dislike her i just felt like the situation was something that could def happen between kate & andrew

aaron was pretty much used to taking care of himself whenever he got sick. he knew exactly what his body needed and how he could get better fast, so he never really made a big deal out of it. but. at some point, he realized how much he loved being taken care of by katelyn. he would act all dramatic in front of her for the sole purpose of getting her attention. she would laugh at him but also spoil him rotten. he loves when she cooks for him, or when she leans in to press her lips to his forehead to check for fever. he loves how gentle and careful she gets, always making sure that he is taking his medicine on time. he loves when she speaks softly to him until she feels him relax in her arms. he loves it when she holds him through the night, making sure that he gets enough rest

when katelyn and aaron first started getting closer, he warned her from the get go about andrew and what could happen if they were open. he said it was only fair that she knew now rather than find out the hard way. katelyn agreed, although she didn't fully understand, but it made aaron relax more when they were together, so she kept it up. they started greeting each other with "hey stranger", a play on the idea that they were pretending not to know each other when the foxes were around.

katelyn says it when they come back after freshman year and realise how much they missed each other. aaron says it when she wakes up next to him after they decide to date for real, but in secret. then a thousand times after that, meeting in the library, when she runs to him at the bearcats game, at graduation. then it's been five years and the carolina summer is way too hot to get married in, but then she's walking down the aisle anyway and he can't hold back a smile and she whispers, too quiet for anyone but him to here, "hey, stranger."
