watching cdramas with french subtitles is the best idea i ever had. if the show is in a language i don't speak i'm already going to have to be closely reading the subtitles, so why not also use it as language practice? the subs go by so fast i don't have time to translate them internally into english, i just have to absorb the meaning without doing that (which is how it's supposed to work but i've never been fully able to do that before). AND the best part is that when i'm going about my day i'm finding that some of my internal monologue is just in french now?? i think it's because subs are almost entirely dialogue...i'm getting hours of dialogue practice without actually having to converse. it's also fun with cdramas specifically because i have by now picked up some chinese vocabulary from watching tv and i get to see how that vocabulary is translated into french. idk man i'm just having a great time.

#i used to watch stuff in english with french subtitles but it's just not the same #maybe it would be more interesting now that i'm better at french but idk it didn't really do much for me #because i'd mostly be understanding via the english i was hearing and didn't have to rely on the french for much #but with chinese there are only like. 20 sentences you could say that i wouldn't need a translation for #anything other than that and i have to rely on the subtitles #so i have to comprehend the french or i won't know what's happening at all #the other great thing about this method of improving comprehension is you can rewind!!!#you can pause. you can repeat it if necessary. you can theoretically do that in real conversations but watch out #so like. when i'm just reading a novel i can read at any old pace. and in fact since i always read aloud i can only read at #the speed at which i can speak french. which is faster than it used to be but still not as fast as i can read silently #but reading subs forces you to read pretty fast. which is good practice. and then whenever you miss something you still have #the option to back up #my posts #french #subtitles #f #i always have subtitles on even when it's english subs for oral english #but in that case the subs are an aid and i'm mostly comprehending by listening #auditory processing is easier with hints lol #so it's usually possible for me to say chop vegetables or something while watching english-language media #because i'll just look up when i need help understanding something. but i'm not reading all the subs #not the case for a show in any other language. if i'm going to watch a show in chinese i have to sit down and concentrate #if i'm already concentrating and reading all the subs might as well make some progress

Hi! It's very pleasing to know you've been around for as long! 😁😁😁 I absolutely appreciate the appreciation! And no worries, your English is super fine! 😁 (Relatable actually. I am also apologizing in advance if I can't exactly have my point clearly across because I'm not well at English myself! lmao)

It took me quite some time to learn how to draw chubby characters but it's so satisfying to have eventually. ( *`u*) (I mean, there's still so much to learn, but still.)

Having a chubby main protagonist is so wonderful to have. And a good kid at that. (Ngl I'm attracted to kindness. haha So of course it's very important to me that he's fat AND kind.)

Also design-wise, I personally think it fits his character so well. Soft and huggable, shaped like a friend. Thick arms to hug people with snuggly. Body wide like a shield. etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And I just really like to capture these elements when I draw him as an adult. Also that it's just fun to draw.

Simply personal thoughts about it, nothing against any other ways he's being portrayed by others of course.

#And it's not even because English isn't my first language. Just generally bad at language. RIP #I had this conversation with someone once where they headcanon he'd get lower back pains if he slim down because of how his gem will #poke or stab his spine #I really like that he's chubby/fat just because. and that he's happy and confident about it #but him being fat not entire by choice is an interesting angle to look at.#I mean obviously he's naturally chubby because of DNA too but you get when I mean. or I hope you do. ;u;#Yo I had a theory.... or at least a headcanon about how his gem is arranged inside his body and how it's practically designed so it can be #passed down eventually without killing him. Mind you I was above 18 then too.#I had another OC I wanted to be really chunky but I was so bad at it that I found an excuse why she's so slim so I can avoid drawing chunky #I did eventually made her chunky but I almost never posted any of my OCs lol. She also have a black and pink theme. 🤔#Same with skin color but it happened in my own Sona. I have a tan skin tone and I thought I gave my Sona the same skin...but like... Just heard Ballister's English voice for the first time (I watched the movie in Spanish), and, ngl, that wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Which is funny, given he looks exactly like his VA.

love when people in my life think of me whenever they need language interpreting/translating and are like “hey do you speak [x] language?” and 90% of the time I do not know that particular language but I’m still very flattered they considered me

#it’s never French because there’s like 0 French speakers here that don’t also speak English #I think it’s genuinely the most useless language I know but they didn’t have German in high school and I thought Spanish was boring so #French it was #Spanish would definitely have been the more lucrative option lmao #maybe I’ll finally take me a proper class one day to get my skills polished #bc I know a good bit but just don’t have practice listening and speaking #read a whole book? no problem #try to have an in person conversation with a native? ah, well, so about that. most of the languages in that list are supposed to be crossed out ! back when I made my blog you could do a few html things in the blog description, but it doesn't show up anymore, especially not on the app/mobile. so now it just looks like a long list of languages which is a bit misleading

I am definitely interested in all those languages, and have taken a few classes or self-studied most of them over the years, but I definitely don't speak all of them

should probably be edited/updated, but I'm not even sure I'd still remember how to do that...

#langblr #I'd say I speak afrikaans english and french #am conversant enough in german and dutch (they're basically freebies with afrikaans as an L1 (although that does cause interference !!))#yiddish I studied while taking a course on the literature of the shoah at uni #and while i do still read forverts regularly #most of my jewish friends moved abroad after uni so I don't actually *use* the language anymore or have an active connection to it #so I don't think it counts anymore #xhosa and persian i've studied a lot as well #i can remember how the grammar works and a handful of words #but i can't speak or read or do anything to a useful/practical level #gothic and toki pona are special #and then nul points to sesotho and japanese. they're on my list. I will learn them one day #i also want to learn bambara and my friend has suggested we learn italian #but I haven't started either of those yet either
