Rowaelin Month 2024, Day 13: Finding Out They're Pregnant @rowaelinscourt
Word count: 2.8k
Warnings: medical talk, hospitals, mentions of infertility, vague depictions of medical tests
A/N: this is a little bit self-indulgent but also therapeutic--i had surgery for endometriosis this past summer, and part of recovering from that was how tf do i process all the implications of this diagnosis??? well...writing helps. anyway. Aelin has endo in this fic, but things go very different for her than they did for me lol.
Enjoy :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was still dark outside when Aelinâs alarm went off, the cheery tune sheâd chosen breaking through her restless scraps of dreaming. With a mild groan, she rolled over and tapped the screen of her phone multiple times before she managed to turn off the alarm, eliciting a sleepy chuckle from her husband behind her. She poked him in the shoulder and stuffed her pillow over her head.Â
âFive more minutes,â she mumbled. âGot another alarm.âÂ
Rowan tugged the pillow off of her head and fluffed it up. âMmmkay, go back to sleep, love.â He tugged her back against his side, and she closed her eyes.Â
And her alarm went off five minutes later. She grumbled at it, but she carefully extricated herself from Rowanâs embrace, turned off her alarm, and pushed herself out of bed. Leaving a kiss on his forehead, she tucked the blankets up and went quietly into the bathroom. A clean set of clothes already sat on the shelf beside the shower, and she smiled softly at her husbandâs quiet thoughtfulness. She went through the motions of the shower rhythmically, her body working on muscle memory due to the too-early hour, making sure to scrub extra well with the antibacterial soap. Finished, she dried off and put on the clean, comfortable clothes Rowan had set outâsweatpants and a loose shirt.Â
He was awake and half-dressed when she emerged from the bathroom, and his glasses sat crooked on his nose. She chuckled softly and straightened the wire frames, and he caught her wrists and tugged her gently into his lap. âHey.â Fingers threaded through her loose, damp hair. âWant braids?âÂ
âYeah.â She passed him her brush and two hair ties, and he carefully wove the blonde waves into twin braids down past her shoulder blades. âSomeday, our future daughter is going to only want you to do her hair for school.âÂ
âBiggest win ever.â His voice, like hers, held a touch of muted yearning, weighed down by the hopelessness of two years trying to conceive without success. Aelin had been diagnosed with stage 3 endometriosis in her last year of college, while they were engaged, and she had put off surgery until her doctor finally said that the excision procedure was the best thing she could do for her chance of having a family.Â
âIâm nervous,â she admitted. âI know Dr. T said this is the best thing for us right now, but IâŚI almost donât want to hope.âÂ
âFireheart,â Rowan breathed, standing so he could wrap his wife in his embrace. âItâs going to be okay, my love. I have more than enough hope for both of us.âÂ
âI love you,â she whispered.Â
She held his hand the whole way to the hospital.Â
When they arrived, the receptionist waved them towards the procedure center waiting area, and they sat down and waited in the early-morning quiet. Only a few others were there, including an older couple, a middle-aged woman, a half-asleep man, and a woman about Aelinâs age sitting with her mother.Â
âGalathynius?â Aelin stood up and went to the desk, and she gave the receptionist her information. It only took a few minutes, and soon she was back in her seat with a green hospital bracelet around her right wrist and a clipboard with some papers on it. She handed Rowan the slip of paper with her patient information and went to work on the few forms. It was only a short while before a nurse with a softly lined face walked into the waiting area and called for Aelin, and she squeezed Rowanâs hand as she stood up.Â
âIâll see you soon,â she promised, and she followed the nurse through the double doors into the pre-procedure area. They walked down a quiet, gray-tiled hallway, the faint scent of disinfectant lingering in the sterile air.Â
The nurseâher nametag read Philippaâstopped by a restroom door. âFirst question, Aelin.â She held out a clear plastic cup. âDid you remember to come with a full bladder?âÂ
âI did.â Aelin smiled. âAlmost like Iâve had practice with this kind of thing.âÂ
Philippa chuckled. âOkay then, I donât need to give you instructions. Go ahead, and when youâre done, Iâll be at the desk over there.â She gestured. âTake your time.âÂ
Aelin went into the bathroom and closed the door. Pregnancy screening was required as part of the pre-procedure preparations, and it was almost too familiar, almost too easy, to take care of the urine sample and close up the plastic cup. So many tests flickered before her eyes, so many single lines, so many negative results. The only thing that gave her any hope was that Dr. Yrene was firmly convinced that this surgery would improve her chances of conceiving, since the endometriosis lesions would no longer be there to interfere with things. She handed Philippa the cup and followed her down to a small, clean room, where a hospital gown, cap, and socks sat on the bed beside a plastic sack and a sleeve of chlorhexidine wipes.Â
âYou know what to do, Iâm sure, but I still have to give you the rundown.â Philippa let Aelin take a seat in the chair across from the bed and wrapped a blood pressure cuff around her right arm. âWash with the wipes and change into the gown, blah blah blah, and your nurse will come in to get you all hooked up and ready to go.â She checked the blood pressure reading and jotted it down. âOh, and if thereâs anything else we need you to do, your nurse will let you know. Looks like youâll have Sorscha, and sheâs wonderful.âÂ
âThank you,â Aelin murmured, giving the older woman a grateful smile as she left the room and closed the door. She had just finished getting herself into the gown and bright yellow socks when there was a rapping on the door and a woman of about her own age with soft caramel skin and a warm smile cracked open the door and poked her head into the room.Â
âAelin, right?âÂ
âThatâs me.â Aelin sat down against the pillows. âRight on time.âÂ
âIâm Sorscha.â The nurse came into the room. âIâm sorry to disturb you before you might be ready, but your pregnancy screening came back positive.âÂ
The world around Aelin went silent.Â
She shook her head slowly, bringing herself back into the present. âIâŚwhat?â Her breath hitched, shock creeping up her throat, and she clasped her hands together in front of her stomach. âIt has to be a false positive; thereâs not a chance Iâm actuallyâŚâ Pregnant. The word she couldnât let herself say.Â
Sorscha looked down at her clipboard, flipped a few papers. âWould you like to take a digital test by yourself? It could be a false positive, and we do need to be absolutely sure of the result because youâre scheduled to go under general anesthesia.âÂ
Aelin nodded. âYes, please. I do want to take another test.âÂ
âGot it.â Sorscha walked her back to the bathroom and grabbed a digital test from the nurseâs station. She handed the box to Aelin and let her go into the bathroom alone. âBring it on out when youâre done, okay? There is a possibility that we might have to do an ultrasound if you think youâve had a false positive, but thatâs easy to do.â She squeezed Aelinâs trembling hand. âYouâre going to be okay, Aelin.âÂ
âOkay.â More hesitantly than before, Aelin went into the bathroom, locked the door, sat down, and took the pregnancy test out of the box. She went through the motions robotically, tucked the test back into the cap, and turned it over while she waited. Questions spun around her head at the speed of light, but she pushed them away, weighing them down with the strength of her doubt. She knew her ovulation window, and sheâd had her period regularly. It justâŚit wasnât possible.Â
The timer pinged, and Aelin picked up the test, turned it over, and read the single line of text displayed on the tiny gray screen. And her whole body trembled, shaken by the force of hope that crashed into her as she read that second test.Â
Pregnant. 3+.Â
Shakily, she walked out and wordlessly handed the test to Sorscha, who took one look at it and helped Aelin sit down in the nearest chair. âYouâre going to be okay,â she said again, reassuring Aelin as the tears finally broke free and spilled down her face.Â
âIââ A great shuddering sob wrenched Aelinâs shoulders, and she just let her body loose to the tide of overpowering shock and disbelief and wonder and worry. âI think Iâm dreaming,â she choked out, her words broken with tears. âItâs been two years; I didnât think it was possible.â She wiped her eyes. âGod, Iâm sorry, here you are just trying to do your job and Iâve turned into a hot mess express in front of everyone.â She sniffled.Â
Sorscha gave her a hug, and Aelin leaned into the comforting gesture. âHow about we go back to your pre-op room and talk about next steps?âÂ
âOkay.â Aelin followed Sorscha back to the room, and she sat down on the bed while the nurse pulled up her charts on the computer. âSoâŚwhat now?âÂ
âWell, the main thing is that you wonât be able to have the surgery that you were scheduled for, but thatâs a very good thing because youâre pregnant.â Sorscha clicked through a few things. âIâve paged your doctor, and she should be in soon to discuss what she wants you to do, but my suspicion is that sheâll order an immediate ultrasound to check on things and maybe have you do some blood tests. Itâs convenient that youâre in the hospital, because you donât have to go anywhere.âÂ
Aelin laughed softly, flicking stray tears away from her face. âOkay.âÂ
Right on cue, there was another knock on the door, and Dr. Yrene Towers came in, her copper curls tied back into a bun. âWell hello, Aelin! Seems like today might not go exactly as we planned.âÂ
âThatâs one way to say it,â Aelin agreed.Â
The doctor looked over at the charts that Sorscha had pulled up. âOkay, Aelin, Iâd like for you to go up to the imaging clinic and get an ultrasound done.â She stepped over to the computer and rapidly typed up an order that she sent to the imaging center. âSince a surgeon ordered it, theyâll be able to do it right away, and this will either confirm your pregnancy for certain or prove that you had false positives. In the first case, weâll turn to prenatal care, and in the second, we can go ahead with surgery. How does that sound?âÂ
âSounds great.â Aelin glanced down at herself. âShould I change?âÂ
âActually, it might be easier if you kept the gown on for now, since theyâll probably want to do an internal ultrasound.â Dr. Yrene looked over at Sorscha. âCan you take her to imaging, Sorscha?âÂ
âOf course.âÂ
âPerfect.âÂ
Sorscha slipped out of the room and came back a few minutes later with a wheelchair, and she got Aelin settled and took her down the hallways and up an elevator to the fourth floor, where the imaging clinic was located. She spoke briefly to the receptionist and took Aelin into the clinic, bringing her into a softly-lit room. An ultrasound tech was waiting, Aelinâs order pulled up on her screen. She conferred briefly with Sorscha and helped Aelin get situated on the exam bed.Â
After a brief explanation and demonstration of the ultrasound probe, the tech started the scan, and it was only a few minutes before Aelin looked over at the screen opposite her and saw a teeny tiny baby moving gently around inside of her uterus.Â
The tears welled up again, and she didnât stop them.Â
âCongratulations,â the tech murmured, and she clicked away at the ultrasound machine, making notes and recording measurements. Aelin stared at the image of the tiny baby, overcome by an emotion so strong she didnât have the proper words for it, and she was surprised when the tech finished the exam and asked her if she wanted prints of the images.Â
Sorscha came back and took Aelin back down to the pre-procedure area, and she found herself back in the exam room with her ultrasounds, waiting for Yrene. The doctor brought in her own set of Aelinâs ultrasounds, and she was beaming when she came into the room.Â
âIâm so happy for you and your husband,â she said. âHe doesnât know yet, of course, but when we bring him back, youâll be able to tell him all about it. Did you want to wait for him to discuss prenatal care, or would you like to talk about the details with me first?âÂ
âTell me first.â Aelin stroked her thumb over the black-and-white images. âI want to know how far I am and why the heck I didnât know.âÂ
Yrene chuckled. âWell, according to the way things are measuring and the dates youâve tracked for ovulation, you are twelve and a half weeks, almost out of the first trimester.â She pointed to part of one image. âNow, the reason you didnât know is probably partially due to your endometriosis giving you false periods and partially because, as you see here, you have an anterior placenta, which means that the placenta is in the front of the uterus. So, you might not show any bump until later in pregnancy, and it will probably not be quite as big as you might expect.â She ran through a list of more details, pointing out relevant things on the ultrasounds. âAll right, then, I think weâre ready to bring your husband back. Is there anything else you want to ask me?âÂ
âCould you have them do the blood draw before you bring Rowan back? I want to have it all taken care of before he sees me.âÂ
âOf course.â Yrene spoke quietly to Sorscha, and when the blood draw was done and Aelin had a small bandage in the crook of her elbow, both the nurse and the doctor left the room. It was Yrene who walked in shortly later with Rowan, and she grinned at Aelin as she left the two of them alone.Â
âHey, Fireheart.â Rowanâs brows furrowed in confusion as he looked around the room. âIs something wrong?âÂ
She shook her head. âNot at all.âÂ
âBut youâreâŚâÂ
âI know.â She looked down at herself, still in the hospital gown but not hooked up to IVs and monitors like heâd expected her to be. âThey canât do the surgery right now, Rowan.â Her throat thickened, and she looked up at her husband with tears gleaming in her eyes. âBecause Iâm pregnant.âÂ
âWhat?!â He staggered backwards, his body going nearly boneless as he collapsed into the chair, shock and hope washing over his face.Â
Aelin handed him the ultrasound photos, watched the joy brighten his features as he drank in the sight of their tiny baby cradled inside of her. âTwelve and a half weeks, and I didnât believe the tests until I saw the ultrasound.â
âFireheart,â he breathed, standing so he could go to her and wrap her in his loving arms. His tears dropped into her hair, but she ignored them, just as he ignored how her tears blotched his shirt. âThisâŚI think this is the best thing that could have happened.âÂ
She chuckled through her tears. âAlmostâI canât have the surgery until after I give birth, but this isâŚdefinitely something we both hoped for.âÂ
âYeah.â So gently, his thumb swept the tears from her cheeks. âAnd twelve weeks?â
âYeah.â Grinning, she lifted his slack jaw back into place. âDr. Yrene will talk to both of us about where we go from here.â He nodded, and she let him sit down on the bed beside her and loop his arm around her waist, his strength always her rock. The doctor walked back in and beamed at both of them, and she sat down and gave them a whole list of prenatal instructions.Â
âBut really, most of all, you know what works best for you and your health,â she concluded. âI like to tell my patients not to get too obsessed with the mommy books and social media mom advice, but gods know I canât control that. Iâll see you in a few weeks, okay?âÂ
âThank you so much.â Aelin impulsively hugged her doctor. After Yrene left, she turned back to Rowan, and she brushed the stray tears off of his chin. âItâs good news, love. Itâs such good news.âÂ
âI know.â He passed her clothes to her, and she changed out of the hospital gown. A nurse came back to walk them out of the hospital, and they left with a completely different set of instructions than theyâd expected when they arrived only a couple of hours earlier.Â
 An entirely different outcome, but a miracle nonetheless.
if there is one thing i hope irt people popularizing the plural moonpaw hc while also making it clear the best way to handle it is NOT making her twin actually pure evil i hope we dont have to go through any dumb ass syscourse about the concept of people being born systems or needing to give moonpaw childhood trauma to justify the headcanon because holy shit i do not trust anyone in this fandom to handle the topic whatsoever. lets all be normal about systems forever okay
#to all singlets: stay tf out of it#to all other systems: if you post some anti endo shit on this post i will lose my mind i dont want to hear it i think youre just prejudiced#lamb.og#warrior cats#moonpaw
Good counters to stupid advice?
Everyone contributes something and if we get unsolicited advice, we can say something about it straight away without taking it home with us and being sad about it.
For example:
"You've got to feel better at some point" or "You're always feeling bad" with something like: "Do you understand the term chronic/incurable illness?" feel free to add something!
Allow us to introduce ourselves
Half a year active, over a hundred followers, the majority of which are veteran tumblers from that one 60k note explosion, and we still haven't properly introduced ourselves. Time to fix that.
We are Clover, an endogenic plural system. That means we are multiple people sharing one brain and body, and we aren't plural because of trauma. We do not have DID. (nor do the vast majority of endos)
I am Quincy, the headmate who fronts the most. Quincy is not my real name, but it could've been, and it's an alias I've been using for a few years.
Edit 2024 August 1: Quincy split into Eliza and Mia. Eliza's egg opened easily. Mine crumbled painfully. We now share the host role and this blog. There isn't much difference between us; we both inherited Quincy's memories.
Edit September 18: I live.
There are a lot of people on here who say that it's impossible for a plural system to form without trauma, but as you may have seen from our syscourse (system discourse (expect a lot of sys- compounds)) reblogs, they rarely cite any credible sources, and that's because they're wrong. I am not a LARPer and I do not claim to have DID. This really is every hour of my life, online and offline. If you have any more questions about plurality, feel free to send me an ask.
Though if we're talking about origins, "not from trauma" is overly vague for my taste. If we're really talking about how the system formed, I prefer "dreamgenic", because everyone originated from some combination of nightdreams and immersive daydreams which I had varying levels of control over.
The second most active headmate, Victoria Penelope, has her own blog @victoria-penelope-clover. She posts more infrequently, when she's able to front/cofront/proxy, and is currently mostly focused on syscourse, with occasional slices of life. She's my older syster.
Headcount is currently in the upper teens. Some more may be mentioned occasionally but I'd rather not have a list of private details about everyone easily accessible here for anyone to see. For the most part, all you'll see every once in a while is some colored text indicating a distinct voice.
Anyway, enough plural stuff! Now for typical bio stuff!
Fleed Reddit to come here and wow Tumblr is way better. Always happy to commune with fellow Rexxitors!
For obsession I circle between Chess, Minecraft, Geometry Dash, Warrior Cats, and Undertale. Fandoms I am on the edge of getting sucked into include The Amazing Digital Circus and Death Note. I also plan to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender at some point. Ever since our syscovery, I've consumed next to no fiction for fear of more headmates.
I have a few projects in the works but I've promised myself that I won't post them publicly until I've actually made substantial progress!
No DNI! Maybe it's just because I'm not jaded by years of wasted time with unproductive trolls, but I think assuming someone is in bad faith just because they disagree with you about something heated is bad actually, partly because I've seen what happens and how long progress takes when left-of-center people generally refuse to interact with, for example, transphobes. Relatedly, I will only block you if I think you're a bot or if you really, really fuck up.
Do not be surprised if I casually shit on something you believe in without warning.
I have an ever-growing queue set to post five times per day, and I try not to post too much more than that. I also try to keep my dash at less than 100 posts per day, which is apparently uncommon here.
Reblog reblog reblog! Not just my posts, but everyone (unless you have a good reason not to, like with this intro post). Reblogs are what keep Tumblr alive! Likes do next to nothing.
That's all for now! If you have any more questions, send me an ask and I might add it to this post!
I'm not a "endometriosis warrior"
I'm not fighting endometriosis, she's not fighting me
Hi! We're either called by Miles or Zelda! Whichever is fine by us! We're a system, this is our age regression/pet regression blog (to which also a syskid blog aswell). I (Captain) moderate this blog for our littlers and regressors, you can look up more about us by checking out our blog.
Normally when we regress, most of our little ages ranges between 4-6, or 8-9 Y/O! And at times 3! We actually have a pacifier so if we ever get the chance we'll post some of our agere stuff we got irl :P also our partner is @sillystickz (they're our caregiver and we're theirs :3)! ;) I have no idea how many times this post will be edited hehe
Also if you recognize us from our main blog, no, you do not know us, at least act like you donât know us (not unless we personally know you as a close friend or our partners), leave us be on this account and do not interact. This is for age regression stuff only. Although feel free to interact on our other accounts other than here.
life update :)
hey everyone!
as of today, I've officially been diagnosed with endometriosis, which is both good and bad news. it's bad because endo is a chronic illness for which the only treatment is surgical excision, but it's good news because now i know what's been going on and I know that it WILL be treated to improve my health.
anyway. posting will probably be super random and sporadic as i recover, but i have another part of until proven guilty almost ready to go (hehehe @house-of-galathynius & @mariaofdoranelle) and want to post that soon. and some microfics too!!
