Marianne Faithfull Dies at 78

- “She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress,” Mick Jagger says

Marianne Faithfull, the singer and actress who had a 1964 hit with “As Tears Go By” and went on to make nearly 20 solo albums, has died at 78.

A representative announced Faithfull’s Jan. 30 death in London without specifying a cause.

“May Marianne Faithfull rest in love and peace,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

Writing on social media, Garbage eulogized Faithfull as “an eternal muse.”

“You did life brilliantly,” the band said of Faithfull. “Thank you for all the brilliance and the swagger and the music and the disobedience.“

Also recorded by the Rolling Stones, “As Tears Go By” was the first song credited Mick Jagger and Keith Richards; Faithfull had a long personal and professional connection to the band.

“I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull,” Jagger said in a statement. “She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”

After appearing in such films as “The Girl on a Motorcycle” (1968) and “Hamlet” (’69), Faithfull disappeared from music and movies before resuming her recording career in the late-1970s to critical acclaim.

“Marianne had an iconic raspy voice, long blonde hair and a strong, beautiful presence that lit up every room she walked into,” Darlene Love said. “More than that, she had a warm and loving heart. I’m so honored to have called her my friend.”

Faithfull found a second wind as the 21st century dawned, releasing seven albums between 2002 and 2021.

“I absolutely adored Marianne Faithfull,” Emma Swift said in a statement. “She was a hero to me. I’m so sad she’s gone, and forever grateful for her beautiful music, badass attitude, wicked laugh and divine rasp. RIP.”
