Fandom Problem #9295:

Seeing a bit of an alarming difference between the generation that grew up without the internet, and then with the internet for part of their formative years, and the newer generation that only grew up with the internet 24 7, and how they treat people. There's way less emphasis on "there's a real person on the other end", and more of a mentality that people are just vending machines to poke and annoy and get karma and coins and content from, like a means to an end instead of someone you actually interact with. Not to say people don't think the other person is real or anything, but there's some kind of cognitive separation happening where that knowledge just doesn't feel as pronounced, and forward, in peoples' minds anymore, so it's easier for people to discount the fact that, yes, there is a living and breathing goddamn person on the other end. And it's really having an effect on how people in fandom are treating each other. I am honestly really nervous to interact with people in their early 20s or younger now, even just in passing. I never used to have this problem. Boards? Forums? No big deal. Now it feels like I'm walking around in the dark and there's a 50 50 chance I'll step in a rat trap, which frankly is a lot more shitty than it sounds because younger kids and teens are very prone to peer pressure and ganging up on people to fit in.
