thinking about how the hunger games were designed to prove that without society, order, government, someone to rule, we devolve into little more than animals, and how the games themselves prove over and over again that this is not true. We see it in every single game we witness.
Katniss placing flowers around Rue's body in the arena. Thresh sparing Katniss because she was kind to Rue, even though he was making it that much harder for himself to win.
Haymitch going back for Maysilee after hearing her scream even though their alliance had been broken. Haymitch holding her as she dies the same way Katniss did Rue.
Coral's "I can't have killed them all for nothing" when she realizes she's not going home. Lamina cutting down Marcus at great personal risk. And, my favorite moment in tbosas, Reaper collecting the bodies of his fellow tributes, his peers, even the ones who tried to kill him, into a pile. Taking the weapons from their hands. Closing their eyes and crossing their arms in the best approximation of a proper burial he can manage, covering them with the Capitol flag as a makeshift shroud.
The Games bring out the worst in people, yes. But despite the extreme circumstances, despite the exterior pressure of the Capitol, despite the fact that it could mean pain and heartbreak and death, it also shows that people have an enormous capacity for goodness. That even in a situation purposefully designed to make empathy impossible, people can't help but have it anyway.
Snow looks at the Games and all he can see is what's inside himself-- this pure animalistic drive to conquer and defeat. He kills and it feels good and he thinks that everyone else must feel that way too. He doesn't realize (maybe can't realize) that he is the exception, not the rule. He cannot see outside himself, outside his own warped perspective, to realize that the fact that people do show humanity in the games proves his entire worldview wrong.

The way your fellow men do or don't perceive you is an all-male issue. Setting aside the fact that the vast majority of female victims of SA indicate they'd rather receive counselling in a female-only space, there is zero evidence that trans-identified men present less of a threat to women and girls than the non-trans-identified variety. In fact, there are proportionately more trans-identified men in jail in the UK currently for sexual offences than among the general male prison population.
That statistic doesn't mean I think you personally are a predator. What it does prove is that there are at least as many predators among trans-identified men as among men who don't identify as trans.
If you and fellow trans-identified men want a space where no other men go, you're free to create one. Nobody wants you raped. Nobody wants you killed or harmed in any way. But women's spaces are for women. Your inability to grasp that you aren't entitled to those spaces because you don't 'identify' as a man is not female rape survivors' problem. Seeking to breach vulnerable women's boundaries does not mark you out as one of us. On the contrary, your arguments are typical of a certain kind of male: one who thinks the satisfaction of his own needs and desires is far more important than the harm he may be causing to women.

i’ve seen multiple people say something along the lines of “we’re waking up in the same world we lived in yesterday” which is bleak but also true; there was going to be work to do no matter what. this is the much worse and harder version of that work but even if harris won it would not have fixed the fundamental things that need fixing. i mean, fuck, it would’ve been the better outcome, but the work would still be there. many of the things people fear under trump happened and are happening under biden. we’ll just have more battles to fight.
i think about the progressive mobilization and radicalization that happened 2016-2020; it shouldn’t have to happen like this but we deserve better than a two-party system, and one half of that system was never going to save us. we will always have to do what we can for ourselves and each other 💛

thinking about how Humans Are Space Orcs stories always talk about how indestructible humans are, our endurance, our ability to withstand common poisons, etc. and thats all well and good, its really fun to read, but it gets repetitive after a while because we aren't all like that.
And that got me thinking about why this trope is so common in the first place, and the conclusion I came to is actually kind of obvious if you think about it. Not everyone is allowed to go into space. This is true now, with the number of physical restrictions placed on astronauts (including height limits), but I imagine it's just as strict in some imaginary future where humans are first coming into contact with alien species. Because in that case there will definitely be military personnel alongside any possible diplomatic parties.
And I imagine that all interactions aliens have ever had up until this point have been with trained personnel. Even basic military troops conform to this standard, to some degree. So aliens meet us and they're shocked and horrified to discover that we have no obvious weaknesses, we're all either crazy smart or crazy strong (still always a little crazy, academia and war will do that to you), and not only that but we like, literally all the same height so there's no way to tell any of us apart.
And Humans Are Death Worlders stories spread throughout the galaxy. Years or decades or centuries of interspecies suspicion and hostilities preventing any alien from setting foot/claw/limb/appendage/etc. on Earth until slowly more beings are allowed to come through. And not just diplomats who keep to government buildings, but tourists. Exchange students. Temporary visitors granted permission to go wherever they please, so they go out in search of 'real terran culture' and what do they find?
Humans with innate heart defects that prevent them from drinking caffeine. Humans with chronic pain and chronic fatigue who lack the boundless endurance humans are supposedly famous for. Humans too tall or too short or too fat to be allowed into space. Humans who are so scared of the world they need to take pills just to function. Humans with IBS who can't stand spicy foods, capsaicin really is poison to them. Lactose intolerance and celiac disease, my god all the autoimmune disorders out there, humans who struggle to function because their own bodies fight them. Humans who bruise easily and take too long to heal. Humans who sustained one too many concussions and now struggle to talk and read and write. Humans who've had strokes. Humans who were born unable to talk or hear or speak, and humans who through some accident lost that ability later.
Aliens visit Earth, and do you know what they find? Humanity, in all its wholeness.

once i was in a creative writing class in college, and in a bit of humor i wrote the line:
"Um," I said, eloquently.
And my teacher was so adamant that I had to remove it because "um is not an eloquent word, so it makes no sense" and i was like my brother in christ it's called Irony

rose lalonde hides behind eloquent speech just as much as dave hides behind irony to appear as if she isn't just as if not more silly and awkward and weird than anyone else because she's terrified of emotional vulnerability and she'd be thrilled to know thousands of homestuck fans fell for it

Real fights are messy and I'm sure biting, scratching, scrambling away on your ass are all on the table and encouraged, but sparring matches in the Batcave between the Bats are probably sick as fuck when they try (aka the siblings are not bent on just beating the shit out of each other), because they're using a meld of techniques from about a hundred different martial arts, tapping into their unique strengths, and a near inhuman reading of each other (both from years of working together and experience) and an insane reflex time.

Dungeons and Daddies is such a bullshit show because how the fuck can I explain that the show with the dumbest gags on the planet has made me cry
“Oh yes, there’s a whole arc about a man dealing with the trauma of his abusive father that is truly emotionally compelling. Yes, the man canonically cannot wear pants”
“Glenn’s story really makes me sad because yes in a way he finally did the thing to be a good father but it’s so sad how him doing the right thing for his kid made him lose him. Oh yeah, his full name is Glenn Close, you know like the famous actress Glenn Close?”
“My favorite arc is one where a father tries to fix the mistakes he made in the past but despite doing everything he can he still traumatizes his kid. Because even when you try to do the right thing in the now, the mistakes you previously made can still affect you. And even when you try to be a good parent you can still fuck things up. Oh by the way, this arc takes place in a Fortnite parody.”
“I’m currently very sad about a child named Normal. Yes, he is his school’s mascot. Their mascot is a teen.”

Something I really love about totk is the different feel it has compared to botw. Like in botw you can travel for MILES and find literally no one except for monsters and koroks. And even when you come across someone they don’t know who Link is. Yeah they know the legends of a hero who could wield the Master Sword and a princess who fought back the Calamity. But they’re just that, legends.
But in totk there’s people all over Hyrule and they know Link and Zelda. The legendary princess and her hero are their neighbors, teachers, leaders, friends. Everywhere you look there’s evidence of Link and Zelda’s presence in the lives of their people.
They’re no longer lonely, larger than life figures. They’re one with Hyrule and those who live within it. They’re free to nurture the land and it’s people together, side by side.

cas is suicidal at multiple points throughout the series because he feels overwhelmingly guilty and unable to face up to the consequences of his actions (a lot of which were out of his control but many which weren't). he views death as redemptive and that's why his suicidality expresses itself in a recklessness with his own life and well-being. if he dies, it's alright, because his life is meaningless, and if he dies while saving someone that's even better, because then he will be redeemed in death.
dean is suicidal at multiple points throughout the series because he loses his loved ones in horrifically violent ways and cannot/is not allowed to grieve healthily. he doesn't seek death actively (any more than he already does as a hunter) but he doesn't avoid it either, and he thinks of it as something that will grant him relief from the pain of loss.
what i'm saying is that the ending of supernatural is awful (in part) because it confirms both of their attitudes towards death while they were at their lowest.
