You looked expectantly to the Serpent Pillar, waiting for him to confirm or deny but he only sat in silence, as still as death.

But his eyes shone with something haunted; tortured.

Recognition.

Anger flared to life in your belly. “You know what I speak of, yet you won’t tell me?”

Obanai’s head fell into his hands. “Y/N —“

“Have I not spent enough time being chained to the dark?”

Multi-colored eyes flashed to yours, the skin around them crinkled tight. “That’s not —,” he stammered. “What we did — that night —“

“So something did happen —“

“Yes!” Obanai exploded, and the suddenness of his outburst made you shrink back into your pillows. He swore as he shot to his feet, his small stool toppling over behind him as he stalked away from your bedside, his spine stiff. “Yes, something happened.” He bit, but the iciness of his tone was undercut by his anguish as his hands gripped at his hair in frustration.

He whipped back around to face you, his eyes wild and bright. “Is that what you wanted to hear? Something happened that shouldn’t have, and I tried to fix it, but then it cost us you.”

Obanai swore again, and his fingers dropped to the edge of the bandages covering his mouth. Something less than a memory but more than a mere feeling flickered in your mind’s eye, and dully you thought you recalled him pulling at his facial coverings whenever he found it difficult to breathe.

Whenever he was overwhelmed; near his breaking point.

For a moment, you thought he might drop his mask; his chest heaved and though his neck was as covered as his mouth, you spotted how his throat pulsed and contracted, working hard to swallow around whatever lump had formed.

But then his countenance shifted, and his arms dropped limply to his sides, his shoulders curling forward in defeat. “I cost us you.”

When he finally dared to raise his head, he was met only with an odd look from you.

“Fix it?” An ugly, derisive laugh you don’t recognize escaped your throat. “Is that what you call sending me to hell for three months?”
