Some more character backstory speculation in the Volsung-Nibelung-Dietrich cycle. Sigurd/Siegfried spends his childhood in the woods under the watch of Mime/Regin the dwarven smith in all versions of his story except for the Nibelungenlied itself, which goes out of its way to make Siegfried RESPECTABLE. Even in the Scandinavian material, which presents him having two living parent figures and a grandparent (Hjordis, Alf, and Hjalprek), he still gets fostered and tutored by Mime. Though he does keep in contact with his family, as he says he's used to getting anything he asks for from them. His childhood with Regin makes sense in the versions where he's a foundling, but it seems a little weird for his family to hand him off to Regin of all people for his upbringing. Svend Grundtvig discusses the theory that Regin related to Hjordis through his sister Lofnheid, which would provide some reasoning for choosing Regin, but Reginsmal darts between the origin of the hoard to Sigurd meeting with Odin on his quest for vengeance, so it's hard to figure out what's going on. What do you think is the in-universe rationale for Regin being chosen as Sigurd's foster-father?
"[...] except for the Nibelungenlied itself, which goes out of its way to make Siegfried RESPECTABLE."
I kinda love how you phrased that because it immediately made me think back to Lang's movies, which generally stick close to the Nibelungenlied but still have Siegfried be fostered by and learn to forge metal from Mime -- so much for all efforts at respectability! XD
As for me, I like Regin being related to Hjordis. I think it makes sense, especially as Hjordis' side of the family seems to already have some pretty strange male figures on it (hello, Gripir!), I like how it neatly ties up the Volsungs' supernatural weirdness with the (back)story of the cursed gold, and I feel there's some good potential drama fuel in it. (Not to sound like a broken record -- tho I probably do, lol -- but Stephan Grundy uses the Regin - Lofnheid - Hjordis connection in his books, and I really enjoy both his take on Hreidmar's family and its ramifications through the later events of the story.)
However, it doesn't quite feel necessary to me. Part of it is that Volundr/Weland, too, gets a "taught by dwarves" story, and while the guy's admittedly the Master Smith and sometimes a giant/elf/other supernatural being himself, that sort of takes the edge off Sigurd's upbringing for me, making it, in my view, just a Weird Thing That Happens To Heroes Because They're Built Differently (And Sometimes Get A Little Too Close To The Borders Between Human & Non-Human) and something Hjordis and the rest of the family might have agreed to, even if with some reluctance/wariness, after noticing the kid wasn't exactly your average boy and needed something to balance off the otherwise all-human normalcy of his life.
Another part is that, a couple of years ago, I was trying to find out more about smiths in Norse and Germanic society. Unfortunately, nothing specific's coming to mind rn, only some vague recollections, but I remember reading about a seeming discrepancy between literary smiths appearing as isolated, mysterious, often not-quite-human figures and historical wealthy, well-respected smiths who were actually probably very socially active and connected to their communities. (Obviously, there was more to it, and I doubt the whole story was as straight-forward as I'm making it sound rn, with every literary smith fitting in a box and every historical smith fitting in the other, but again, this isn't all exactly so fresh in my memory.) So, I think it'd be kind of sweet for the adults in Sigurd's life to encourage him to pursue an interest that couldturn out to be very advantageous for him in the future in both a pratical, know-how sense and by giving him a possible new way to connect and work with other people with ease. Even if I do see Regin as a bit of a recluse himself, given his own history... XD But, hey, it's not like Regin's personality would necessarily rub off on Sigurd as he teaches him, right?

U r honestly making me want to replay dao. I would love to know more about haldi if you ever feel comfortable with sharing. ❤️
Aeducan and Brosca are my favorite origins from dao. They're both really good in my opinion, especially aeducan. For elf, I also recomend female elf tabris origin, its really good, my third favorite origin. Cousland (human noble) is fine imo, but I liked Aeducan (noble dwarf) a lot more. Orzammar politics is just so intriguing and the family dynamics too! I know people love elven lore more, but dwarven dragon age lore to me is honestly so fascinating to me.
hehe. power to you bc it's getting better now, but i feel one must REALLY love the games to deal with the constant crashing. please share if you do!
ooo ty ima saved this bc i will forget! i def wanna do brosca and was pondering doing an elf but a mage elf, so i'll pause that and maybe do tabris after. is there a particular reason why female? and roflmao that's my feelings re: cousland tbqh, especially male cousland-- even tho i wanna give anora a go but it's like why couldnt i romance her with a male dwarf noble???
i man it is to me too tho i havent read through the codexes yet! but every tid bit i leearn from friends and fandom and the game is so intriguing.
oh man i do want to desscribe haldi but im so tired rn. i had this ask in my head and was like GONNA DO IT and got hit with a wave of tired.
i guess to keep it simple [though i may go into it at another date] is i want to keep a balance of the noble [as in n manner]/honor focused, with the kindness and compassionate, and the cunning balanced. i'm just stuck on how much. i feel i cant let her be TOO naive bc how else would she not only have made it alive for so long but how did she become second? [but that def could be part why bhelen betrayed her. trian was a tyrant but his baby sister was too kind!] i think people dont give her credit bc of those things for being as pratical as she is. like she leans more giving and feeling bad but she isn't without sense [most of the time lmao], she just wants to give people a chance. she cant help it i feel sometimes [how DID she survive. ima blame her mom. but i kinda like the idea of bhelen protecting that to his own expense until it's like what have i let grow?]
i feel like her practicality leads to her cunning. bc i feel she's cunning in the sense that she's astute and picks up on things rather quickly, she's not overly curious but she can ask question and wants to understand before acting [most of the time]. and i feel that's what lead her to the commander appointment. why she wouldve been a good one and is a good warrior -- not just her strong focus on pride and acting chivalrous or wte.
my other issue is figuriing how much she's changed and how much she shows. i dont want her like kendis [i feel i have too many conceal dont feel chars]. i feel she just doesnt see it lmao. how much it HURTS. bc it makes sense to her, this is how things are done. it makes sense bhelen saw a weakness in her and she lost, so she should die a warrior death [gorim got that out her head.] she lied to morrigan bc morrigan lied first [and not as a way to get back at her bc she is mad at herself and at morrigan for falling for it]. wynne is staying in camp so she doesnt exert herself [not for any strong reasons]. she isnt hurt her father didnt fight for her, she isnt angry about what bhelen di d [the reason she mentioned it to the gray wardens was SOLELY so they know where she stands/what happened. ]
so it's less 'wow i see this and ima hide it/pretend i dont see it' and more like 'what is this? this is useless *chucks it away* .... hey why does this keep coming back?' less suppression and dismissal and more obliviousness and dismissal.
this got so long lmao

So i wanted to hunt a paradox pokemon during the first jaunt into Area Zero but having the NPCs around and the fact that they seem to spawn less before the endgame made that tedious, so I decided to postpone the final hunt until AFTER the prof fight.
and it paid off!
The last shiny in my badge quest! He was somewhat named after the Elf who did not show up for elf pratice.
This was so fun, and i'm thinking of doing another challenge like this.
The Shinies (Featuring my starter who got to be who i hunted shinies with for the most part, mostly to try and stay around the level cap):
Tumblr media
In total Nine shinies. The meowth is the one Salvatore gives you, its not shiny!
In order: Oleander the Toxapex found as a Mareanie! Vermillion the Kilowattrel, found as a Wattrel. Esch the Haryama. Tusk the Donhan! Zest the Flareon! Matcha the Ursaring! Ampora the Vaporeon! Zell the Dragonite, caught as a Dratini!
My final team consistated of Toxapex, Kilowattrel, Haryama, Flareon, Dragonite and Donphan!
This challenge was hard! The shinies I found sometimes had me ad a disadvantage but with thinking, and battle items we did it! I feel accomplished. ;o;
I may do another thing like this in the near future! Maybe I'll make a sideblog for Pokemon stuff...

this is the post that made me wonder if Halbrand/Sauron knew Bronwyn under a different disguise as her absent husband.
eta: Cause think about it, in this world fidelity is important and pratically holy. There’s no way the estate would approve the implication of an out of wedlock child (which is a theory tied to Theo). I don’t think in all of my casual reading I saw anything to indicate anything but traditional family values. So it was weird that they had emphasized that Theo’s father left and Bronwyn’s attraction to… elf guy whose name is escaping me at the moment.
But you know who could be associated with divorce or abandonment and keep Bronwyn’s reputation on the up-and-up? The most evil SOB in the entire lore.
Okay, so this… thing… has been living rent free in my brain for months now and I still don’t know what to make of it.
You know that scene in Númenor where Halbrand makes that unforgettably wonderful murder glare?
Tumblr media
Yeah. That one. So, we have this dialogue:
Númenórean dude: “What are you called again?” Halbrand: “Depends.” “Depends on what?” “How close we are.”
Then we have the alley scene. After Halbrand beats the shit out of those guys, the last thing he says is this:
Tumblr media
Okay, so here it is, the thing:
After Galadriel tells him her name on the raft, he doesn’t hesitate AT ALL before introducing himself as Halbrand.
WHAT ABOUT THE “DEPENDS,” HALBRAND? WHY IS SHE AUTOMATICALLY ON THE “HALBRAND” LIST, HALBRAND?
I’ve narrowed it down to three equally ridiculous theories:
1. He recognizes the name Galadriel and instantly goes FUCKING HELL THERE’S A HIGH ELF ON MY RAFT AND IT’S THE ANGRY BLONDE ONE, MAYDAY, ENEMY ALERT (Halbrand => not close, derogatory)
2. He thinks a good tavern brawl is a neat bonding experience and that the Númenórean dudes are now allowed to use his name (Halbrand => close, appreciative)
3. He simply wanted to seem like a Cool Guy and the “depends” seemed like a Cool Guy thing to say, no deeper meaning to it whatsoever (Halbrand => neutral)
(Oooooor the showrunners just needed a setup so they could finish the fight with the badass “Call me Halbrand.” That’s a boring option though so I’m going to ignore that.)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We were playing T20, which is a brazillian RPG System based on D&D 3.5
For context, the party is a Human Paladin, Human Warlock, Human Engineer and Dark Elf Rogue. this happened about 20 minutes after the party went to open a chest and it was a mimic, which almost killed our Engineer before being killed.
(Party solves some simple puzzle and a chest rises from the ground)
Paladin: "I'll open it"
Engineer: "Wait, (Paladin). Hey, (Me the DM), can i roll perception to see if i notice something weird about this chest?"
Me: "You're really double checking a chest that dropped as a puzzle reward?"
Engineer: "Yeah. You never know what might happen..."
Rogue: "Yeah, (Engineer) got traumatized after what happened last time"
Engineer: "It almost killed me!"
Paladin: "Everything almost kills you. You're so fragile you're pratically made of glass"
Engineer: "You have a point. Anyway, i roll perception"
Proceeds to roll a nat 20
Me: "You notice absolutely nothing wrong with the chest. In fact, it truly, completely passes no sense of danger whatsoever"
Paladin: "There, now can i open it?"
Engineer: "Wait"
Paladin: "Again?!"
Engineer: "I grab my pistol and shoot the chest"
Paladin+Rogue: "You WHAT?!"
Me: "What for? The chest is perfectly safe"
Engineer: "Precautions"
Me: "Ugh, fine. Your bullet goes clean through it. Nothing out of the ordinary happens"
Engineer: "There. Now you can open it, (Paladin)"
Me: "Please tell me you're not going to do that to absolutely every chest in the campaign"

Since I wanted to pratice my DMing abilities and am home for the weekend (to celebrate my dad's birthday), I made a small two shot adventure with my cousin, her bf and my brother. And we have the BEST party. I love them soo much already.
We have:
- Klaus -> a barbarian human, he is a conman who joined the party as a way to leave the city because most citzens were mad at him for his scams and also is runing from law enfocement because of his crimes (mostly a lot of tax fraud). He is a transman wich predominantly hiperativr adhd (portraid by my nb cousing with adhd) and also a hoarder whose bag is full of mostly useless things.
- Klebisvaldo -> a green draconian wizzard who eats small lizards to the horror of the rest of the party. He is a very weird being. He also lies a lot just for fun (and to try to scare people). He is a hypocondriac with a cleaning obcession, he has a hand sanitizer he uses in everthing and created an special cleaning spell. The smell of his hand sanitizer may be disturbing the florest monsters.
- Alex -> a tiefling sorcerer who works as a philosophy high school teacher and entered the mission because his landlord upped the rent and he doesn't want to move (with today's real state market can you blame him?) He lives with his elderly mother and has a strong patological fear of change and general anxiety disorder mostly caused by his trauma dealing with the prejudice against tieflings (specially when teaching in private schools). He also has ADHD (played my brother who has ADHD cause it just runs in the family) who manifests most in the atencion area. He is a sweetheart.
They are acompaning my two NPCs (my efling prince and his half-orc bodyguard) back to the northem florest elf kingdom (or Faer) as he is bringing with him an important renewed piece accord of elfs with northem dwarfs that strongers the friendship between this races that is slowing being formed (in opposition to the southem wars). They should be protecting the NPCs from assassins, but instead their misluck and the strong strange smell of hand sanitizer is bringing more monsters.
