I find it really frustrating the way a lot of people talk about everything surrounding DEI (or whatever buzzword you want to use) on both sides of the issue. This is definitely because in the national media so much of the conversation ends up being bogged down with bad-faith takes, or focusing on things like college admissions and diversity among c-suite employees or whatever. That isn’t to dismiss those as non-issues, but I think it leads ostensibly well-meaning people to overlook really glaring and obvious examples in their own lives.
I work in photography/the arts. People talk about diversity in advertising and wanting push for more skin tones and body types to be represented. That’s all well and good, but I have been in meetings with retouchers and clients and listened to conversations where people are speaking very plainly about lightening models’ skin tone, about trying to “fix” their hair/bodies. For all the oxygen that gets eaten up talking about progressive language policing and constantly evolving jargon, there’s not a lot of subtly in the way these things are discussed. I’m sure every studio handles things differently, but in my experience no matter how much a company wants to put on a woke face, at the end of the day a check is a check. Just look at how quickly big companies have dropped any pretense of DEI—those same companies that went out of their way to hire black models for diversity points were more than likely asking to have many of those models appear lighter during post-production.
It’s the same thing in pre-pro/on set, too. When I was working in equipment rental most of my coworkers were people of color. It was true of a lot of other rental houses too—there’s lots of non-white people in the photo/film industry, it’s just that the vast majority of them are below the line. They’re not on the call sheet. I knew so many guys (and yes almost all men) working as assistants or grips, or driving/packing trucks that absolutely had the ability and the knowledge to be doing more specialized or skilled work. Not all of them wanted to, sure, but the fact remains that there’s a pretty clear racial divide in terms of who’s name shows up earlier in the credits (if it shows up at all).
To put it another way: virtually every (read: I can think of a single exception who technically isn’t even an exception bc he’s a digi tech) first assistant I met/worked with was white, as were the photographers they worked for. Meanwhile, most of them don’t know half as much as about the equipment that they’re using as the non-white guys who actually packed it all up for them. We can intellectualize and get all wonky about what this inequality might be downstream from; we can talk about access to/funding for arts programs and education but again, you’re kind of going down a garden path there. These are people—professional adults—who already have the skills and ability and simply don’t have the opportunities that their white peers do. It’s a tough industry for anyone to break into, but that’s not a universal excuse. At a certain point you have to start asking why I know guys who absolutely have the ability, the knowledge, and the drive/desire to shoot high fashion editorials but they can only ever get hired to work on rap music videos. Like yes you have to be lucky, but let’s not play dumb.
I don’t know that I really have a larger point here, I think I was just talking to someone about the way some celebrity was retouched recently and it set me off. It’s just frustrating that, putting aside the actual bigots for a moment, so many people fall for this meritocratic, post-racial, utopian horseshit that’s so transparently not how this country has ever operated.
