Jenny sighs. “Listen, kid, I’m not your father.”

Charles flinches. That’s not- He never said- “I never said you were.”

“Yeah, but I know what it’s like to carry around that kind of fucking weight,” Jenny says, and the breath leaves Charles’ lungs. “To be scared of other people turning out to be like your old man because you’re worried about becoming your old man. But ask anyone- those guys who are head-over-heels for you, your best friends, your mom, who can’t stop bragging about you- and they’ll tell you that you’re not him. And you’ll never be, because you care too much to let it happen. Screw the past, kid- you can be whoever you want.”

Charles feels like he’s been hit with a truck. That’s not- he can’t be-

Charles shouldn’t be spilling his guts to a woman he barely knows. But he can’t help himself, because how can anyone help but stare at themselves in the mirror and touch their face to check if they’re seeing things or if that creature in their reflection is really them? If you can actually see the truth in your own reflection, or if it’s just lying to you and you’ll never be anything more than the scared little kid haunting you from within your very bones?

“But how- god, how do you know?” Charles asks. “Sometimes, when I look at myself in the mirror, all I can see is him. See his eyebrows, his eyes, his hands- god, how do you know that you won’t end up like them? That your love won’t hurt everything it touches if you’re not careful?”

Jenny purses her lips. “Listen, kid. I’ve had shitty relationships. I’ve had a shitty father. But I’ve made something of myself. And you did too. You and I- we both know something about wounds. We both know something about stitches. I took over my dad’s shop and became a butcher because I refused to let him cut me down. You became a nurse because you refused to let the wounds fester. Neither of us are our fucking fathers."

I know we make jokes about Edwin’s harem but it’s deeply tragic how every man who has ever desired Edwin romantically has also hurt him in profound ways. Simon is the reason Edwin was sent to hell. Monty abused his trust and nearly got him and Charles killed. The Cat King manipulated his repressed attraction and leashed him like a pet, keeping him trapped in a town with a murderous witch. All the while, the man Edwin actually loves, the man who has been nothing but kind and gentle and devoted towards him, does not love him back. Not in that way. Something Something Love is a punishment for not having been strong enough to remain alone.
