No matter which of the two big-business candidates for US president takes office, Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, the frontal assault on the social right to high-quality public education will escalate. Alongside the termination of thousands of jobs and the reorganization of US industries, including mass layoffs of auto, tech and logistics workers, the education system is being upended and thousands of school workers are losing their jobs. Schools are being put on rations in both “red” and “blue” states. The goals of education are themselves being degraded through this bipartisan policy. In numerous ways, young people are being discouraged from pursuing their interests and intellect, and instead being groomed to enter the workforce or military, and the sooner the better. Discipline and obedience are promoted, with growing numbers of police in the schools, endless shooting drills, cell phone bans, library and book bans. Military recruiters are being invited onto campuses and the ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is being promoted in middle and high schools. Brutality is becoming routine. For their part, Trump and the Republicans make no pretense of improving working class schools, instead pushing for a vast expansion of vouchers and other forms of taxpayer funding for private schools. Project 2025, written by Trump supporters and former aides, calls for an end to the US Department of Education and the transformation of Title I (federal assistance for public schools) and IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) into block grants in order to cut their budgets. The fascist Republicans are using their “anti-DEI” campaigns to demonize educators and students, censor educational materials, and demand the promotion of religion, the military and patriotism in schools. The Democrats—also fully serving Wall Street—seek the same ends, just by slightly different means. Under the Democratic administration of Biden/Harris, COVID-19 ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funds have been terminated, and districts across the country are shutting schools, ending tutoring, and laying off teachers, nurses, counselors and support staff. The job outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. puts 2024 cuts to education jobs at 25,396, up 222 percent from last year. This is just the beginning, with as many as 384,000 education jobs to be cut, according to industry consultant Chad Ferguson.

I love looking up candidates for local elections because they really just count on enough people not giving a shit as their path to victory.

I see so many articles about retention of various types of critically needed workers, like teachers and public health workers, all being like, “how can we retain people in this desperately needed workforce???” And really the answer is very simple: offer them respect, and also pay and benefits commensurate with their skills and experience, and with how badly we need them. Like, it’s not that hard. This should be what taxes and tuition are for. Your top administrators at public universities or in government shouldn’t be making millions of dollars if you can’t keep instructors for mandatory undergrad courses or nurses at the community health clinic.

Dirty hallways and classrooms, fields left unmowed for so long that they become a danger to students in gym class practicing on them, custodians required to carry a punishing workload who are written up if they can't match the required pace.  All these reports and more have been straggling in for weeks about many schools in the Houston ISD.
Faced with a massive shortfall of funding after the federal pandemic monies came to a halt, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles and his administration began looking for areas to cut and one area of service  deemed less essential than teachers or lessons was determined to be the cleanup and maintenance crews.

The Dutch right wing government recently announced 1 billion euro budget cuts in higher education, while it plans to invest billions extra in militarisation. Part of its plan includes purchasing 250 million euros worth of anti-tank missile launchers from Israeli weapons manufacturer Rafael. That means that one quarter of the budget cuts of education is going into militarization.

Read the Project 2025 manifesto RIGHT NOW
It's MUCH worse than y'all have been hearing
There is so much here you'll have to look at it for yourself, but the climate policy alone is nightmare fuel.
The republican coalition wants to essentially end funding for green energy, dramatically promote and expand fossil fuel industries, and eliminate funding and regulations in all sectors promoting climate change mitigation. Task forces and offices related to clean energy and lowering carbon emissions will be eliminated and replaced with offices for promoting fossil fuels.
Tumblr media
They want to LOG NATIONAL FORESTS TO "THIN" THE TREES TO STOP WILDFIRES.
Tumblr media
THEY WANT TO FORCE OREGON AND CALIFORNIA TO LOG THEIR NATIONAL FORESTS AND TREAT THEM AS FOR TIMBER PRODUCTION
Tumblr media
There are specific provisions in Project 2025 to essentially destroy the Endangered Species Act, causing it to defer to the rights of "economic development" and "private property." The plan includes delisting gray wolves, cutting the budget so that a "triage" system is used to determine which species will get protection, removing funding for research, removing experts and specialists from the decision-making process, and preventing "experimental" populations of animals from being established.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is so much worse than I expected it to be and there's much more past that: They want to deregulate pesticides and remove much of the EPA's ability to regulate pollutants as well.
Also included in the manifesto is that we should
withdraw from nuclear weapons nonproliferation agreements, build more nuclear weapons, and resume nuclear weapons testing
Tumblr media
The manifesto comprehensively outlines the scorched-earth elimination of abortion access, down to ensuring doctors aren't even trained to perform abortions. There are plans in here to disrupt abortion access GLOBALLY, not just domestically.
Not only that, the Republicans plan on reframing family planning programs around "fertility awareness" and "holistic family planning."
Tumblr media
I can't even describe it all. I'm trying to give screenshots of the most important things but there's so much.
The foreign policy is a nightmare. They plan to push fossil fuels onto the Global South and promote the development of fossil fuel industry in the "developing world."
It is aggressive and antagonistic towards other nations, strongly pro-military, proposing that we INCREASE (!!!!!) defense spending, improve public opinion of the military and military recruitment, and increase the power to fund new weapons technology.
Just read the Department of Defense section. It's about greatly increasing and strengthening the military-industrial complex, collaborating more closely with weapons manufacturers, removing regulatory barriers to arming our allies and to inventing new military weapons, and recruiting more people into the military. They include provisions to develop AI technology for surveillance. And of course, continuing to support Israel is in there.
Elsewhere it proposes interfering in foreign countries with creepy pro-USA propaganda campaigns, even establishing international educational programs where faculty have to pledge to promote USA interests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a line in here about getting rid of PBS because SESAME STREET is LEFTIST for God's sake.
HOW are people claiming democrats have the same policies. I feel like i'm losing my mind.

Starting school is stressful enough but its even more so when you don't know how long your uni is going to stay open. The board's current plans to cut costs (because my university is in massive debt thanks to poor financial management) completely undermines what the university is supposed to be about and decreases the quality of the school. When the plans are implemented something tells me enrollment is going to drop and transfer rates are going to rise.
Firing fifty to sixty percent of your professors and moving half of all classes online doesn't inspire any confidence in the school. I'm probably going to graduate before the plans are implemented but I'm still paranoid about the university closing suddenly. In the past other small liberal arts universities haven't given much warning on their closures to their students.

The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) is permanently ceasing operations, Concordia University confirmed last Friday. In a notice published on its website, the university blamed “budgetary constraints” for the decision. “We extend our sincere gratitude to all faculty, staff, students and partners who dedicated themselves to advancing MIGS’ mission over the years,” the university wrote. The institute was long considered one of Canada’s leading think tanks, working to develop better policies to protect human rights.

to sum up: eric adams defrauded the city of millions of dollars using fake donations from the authoritarian erdogan government to earn matching money from the municipal electoral public funds program (in fact, matched 8-to-1, e.g., $2,000 for a $250 donation), then enacted austerity, claiming the city had no money, cutting library, education, and homelessness funds, while boosting the NYPD budget, salaries, and overtime pay. cartoon-level villain

i feel a lot less bad about googling the cause of health problems after asking my doctor if a medication i'm on is causing it (or if it's an actual problem). she says test results were negative (which means yay no alopecia but boo now i have even less of an idea as to why i seem to have hair loss). then i ask if it's a thing relating to hormones in medication, and if switching to a pill with lower hormone levels would help the hair loss. the doctor then looks for her list on this kind of medication, and which ones have higher or lower hormone levels, before realising it was gone. then she googles whether or not higher or lower levels of this hormone cause hair loss. and comes up with "one says higher is better, this one says the same, but this one says lower." she says talk to the doctor who ordered the test about other possibilities, but considering it took me months to see that doctor (because she's the only specialist in dermatology in a whole ass city of over 100,000) i doubt she'll see me for that.
somewhere in all of this, i mentioned that the doctor who recommended testing my scalp was concerned as to why i haven't had a work-up as to why my b12 has been low for four years. then the doctor says something about low iron stores, and how i should take supplements for that potentially. but then that could cause another problem of mine to return, and to just stop taking it if it does happen. then she says i need blood work, but in three months because of the iron supplements not having maximum effect until then.
nothing came of the appointment. this was over the phone so i kind of get that phone appointments have issues. but still. i mention tests regarding why my b12 is low. that i'm worried a medication i've been on for years is either causing hair loss, or masking something that's causing it. and i book an appointment for 6 weeks because that's the usual
