eddie diaz gets shot in broad daylight in downtown LA. he watches his blood splatter against his best friend's face. he reaches out for him three times. he vaguely has the realization that he's in love with his best friend, but there's a lot happening so that's just like background. he loses consciousness after he learns buck isn't hurt. he thinks this is it. this is the end.
and then he wakes up in the hospital and it's ANA FUCKING FLORES at his bedside LOLLLLL
im so sorry. im so so sorry but it's endlessly funny to me that he gets shot, he wakes up, and ana is there??
and then he finally sees buck who is like "btw it would've been better if i was the one who got shot" and eddie's high on drugs and just has to be like ?? wtf?? in the moment
and then later drops the bomb HAVE MY SON (who is my heart) IN CASE OF MY UNTIMELY DEMISE
eddie then goes home, buck is driving him, he gets to see his son again and yay hang out with his 2 favorite people. he's alive, what a great time- oh a surprise welcome party- TAYLOR FUCKING KELLY IS IN MY HOUSE IM KILLING MYSELF EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
literally the funniest fucking sequences ever seen in television history. man shot. man gay and in love. man remembers he has girlfriend he halfheartedly likes. man's crush suicidal. man go home with crush. man's WORST ENEMY IS IN HIS HOUSE AND HOME.
eddie's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day where he gets shot, wakes up to his gf, and goes home where taylor kelly is there. and he would probably say that the worst part of it all was taylor kelly. i love you eddie diaz. so sorry that this all happened to you.

the fact that Eddie loves being a dad is actually so fucking important to me. like after all the parentification and teen pregnancy etc etc he has every right to feel at least somewhat conflicted about parenthood but he just. doesn't. he loves this kid more than anything in the world and he'd always choose him, again and again and again. there's just such hope and such beauty in a guy choosing not to let this role he loves be soured for him because he was initially forced into it. he knows that his parents put too much pressure on him as a kid, he knows that he was really damn young, maybe too young, when he had his son. but it doesn't matter. getting to parent this kid is the best thing that ever happened to him and by god he will cherish it.

Tommy calling him, "Evan," Ana calling him, "Edmundo,"
They weren't expressions of intimacy, not really. They were intimacy shortcuts.
Your friends call you this fun goofy name, and you're kinda strict about that? Well what if I call you something reserved for family? Something that ties you to a life I don't actually know about... This way, I can slot into being your family....
So they do. With these shortcuts, they gave themselves access to a raw part of Buck and Eddie.
Which, don't get me wrong, they were romantic partners. These doors were allowed open by the named parties. Although I think there's pretty clear evidence that both Buck and Eddie weren't necessarily understanding their own emotional investment in these relationships, but I digress...
All this is to say:
When Eddie calls him "Evan," telling him that he's not expendable? It's not a shortcut to intimacy. It's a deliberate expression of existing intimacy. It's a bid to recognize what they already are to each other.
Eddie is saying I know you. I see you, your childhood, your fears. I am speaking to the part of you that feels unloved, unwanted, like spare parts. I am speaking to the part of you that thought it was good to get hurt sometimes, that extended that feeling into a career of service and self-sacrifice. And I am saying, you are enough. That the part of you that felt unloved is enough. And that I want you here, that you dying is unthinkable, and that you should also consider it unthinkable.

i love to think about (non sexual) intimacy between buck and eddie and how they aren't together (yet) but how it would probably just happen sometimes. i like to think about buck bathing eddie after the shooting. they are so gentle and tender, and just so appreciative of the other. buck's hands are careful as he washes eddie, even if he's terrified of even washing the gunshot wound. (he will replace the bandages as many times as eddie needs and he will monitor eddie's health.) and he pours all his love and care into eddie by washing him, cleaning parts of him he's never touched before but has wanted to so badly. he adores washing eddie's hair, he's always wanted to card his fingers through it. and suddenly, he is. not in the way he imagined it would happen. yet, there he is and his clothes soaking wet from spraying himself with the shower head while trying to get the rest of the soap out of eddie’s hair. this erupts sleepy chuckles out eddie and makes it all worth it. when he’s done, eddie convinces him that he will be fine to get dressed on his own and that buck should take a quick bath too. so, after his own bath, buck– with a towel wrapped around his waist –eventually finds eddie laying in the bed. he’s still naked with just a towel resting over him. “you didn’t get dressed,” buck teases, there’s such a fondness in his voice that it makes eddie smile. “i didn’t feel like it,” eddie replies, “wanna lay down with me?” and now, if eddie were any healthier or better rested, this probably wouldn’t have ever happened but it’s what he needs right now and he couldn’t deny himself of it. not if it was right in front of him. not if it was buck. “you sure?” buck asks. “i wouldn’t have asked if i didn’t mean it,” eddie says, finally meeting buck’s eyes. that’s all the answer buck needs and he lays in the bed next to eddie, careful with his touches. soaking in eddie’s body heat beneath his palm, buck gently explores him until his hand finds its home on eddie’s waist. eddie’s own on buck’s chest, thumb brushing back and forth just over his heart. there isn’t more they do than this, just warm hands and breaths against the other’s skin. maybe they share a kiss or two, or maybe not. that’s between them. however, this is what they need right now. for eddie, it’s buck’s love and care. for buck, it’s eddie’s warmth and beating heart. maybe he finds eddie’s pulse on his wrist or he rests his head quickly down to hear it thrumming in eddie’s chest. maybe he doesn’t. it’s just them there, where sleep eventually finds them; safe, warm and alive.

no but imagine being eddie diaz and you get shot on the street and as you're bleeding out, you have your OH realization about how he's in love with your best friend. and its too late and he's dying and buck is asking him to hang on and its all so fast and chaotic and intense.
AND THEN when he finally finally can come home, there's a welcome back party with his family and the girl he doesn't really like anymore and..... taylor fucking kelly.
eddie diaz is stronger than me bc i would've walked out and start screaming for the sniper to shoot me again and to not miss this time lmao.

Eddie: Ana, I'm sorry I didn’t answer your text last night. I was too focused on this amazing telenovela on Netflix. Ana: I didn’t peg you as a telenovela watcher. Buck: You didn’t peg him at all. That’s why you broke up.

Need an acknowledgement after Buddie goes canon of them having had latent or explicit feelings for each other for years. This isn’t a case of “oh, we were best friends for years and then one day we woke up and were in love.” This is a case of “we’ve been best friends for years, and we’ve been falling in love with each other since the day we met. We just didn’t understand it yet.” We’ve already had Buck’s realization that he’s bisexual, but his arc was chock-full of obliviousness to his attraction to Eddie, his feelings for Eddie, whose attention he actually wants. He still doesn’t really get it, but he gets that he likes men too, at least. Eddie is a whole other ball game. From the Catholic guilt to the toxic masculinity to the childhood emotional neglect to the pressure he keeps putting on himself to perform in relationships. He’s repressed as hell, and he isn’t to “I’m gay” yet, but we see hints of him understanding that how he feels might be a little different (his pause at “follow your heart, not Christopher’s” from Carla, his two talks with Bobby, admitting to performance anxiety on dates to the whole team, his talk with Buck about Marisol being an ex-nun, his acceptance that Ana and a ready-made family was the reason for his panic attack).
We know that the two of them are bad at identifying how they really feel, or at least allowing themselves to feel it. So, it makes way more sense for the show to admit that they’ve had romantic feelings for each other for years, rather than trying to convince the audience that what we’ve been watching these past seven seasons isn’t a product of two characters’ struggles with their identity and relationships. And while I’d be satisfied with a light-hearted snark from Hen or Chim about how they’ve been seeing it for years, I’d be so much happier with a full circle moment of the boys actually fully knowing themselves, acknowledging that they were never just best friends, they just didn’t understand it yet. It would show their series-long growth, as well as being an enormous tip of the hat to the audience. Because we aren’t misinterpreting it. We’re reading the queer-coding directly from the show, yes through subtext of course, but also the literal text. There have been so many moments deserving of acknowledgement in this regard, and I would hate for Buddie to go canon without it being clarified that those moments were exactly as queer and/or romantic as we thought.

"He doesn't need to provide, take care of, or play a heteronormative role for Buck, and that's how Buck snuck in there." This take is sooo big brain and sexy of you, an interesting part of their dynamic is that Eddie CAN'T seriously think "oh if buck was a woman that would be great" because you are so right, they would have never ended up where they are if that was the case. Instead he has to think "if I was gay, we could be in a relationship" Which Adds A Tasty Tasty Element To That Catholic Guilt And Repression Baybee.
And we LOOOOOOVE the Catholic Guilt and Repression in this household!!!

The "real" reasons why these actresses left 9-1-1
Because it is a common accusation Buddie fans have to deal with I wanted to talk about the reasons why the female love interests for Buck and Eddie left the show.
I already talked about it on twitter but due to a limited space I couldn't post links and go deeper into the stories. Therefore I will talk about this a bit more on here.
I will admit that there might have been some fans out there who were really mean and acted weird/rude towards these women. But still... there are real reasons for leaving the show, not "the Buddie fans bullied them and they couldn't handle it anymore so they left".
Tumblr media
Connie Britton (Abigail Clark)
When 9-1-1 started in early 2018 Connie Britton was part of the main cast. She was casted as the dispatcher "Abigail Clark" so that the viewer could have not only the firefighter's view but also the dispatcher's. After an incident at a rollercoaster where Buck lost a person Abby looked up his number to ask if he was okay. They started to talk and soon after got into a relationship.
To begin with, her contract was just for one season and she left when her contract was up. Ryan Murphy said in an interview that they were renogotiating her deal because she loved the cast and wanted to come back for a couple of episodes (what we later got with the train wreck in the season 3 finale). But just as a guest star, not as a main cast again. In the meantime, for that dispatch connection, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley (now Han) was cast.
It was also the plan NOT to bring her back in season 2 so that Buck could grow on his own and that this growth won't be connected with Abby anymore. After all, they just had a brief relationship and she left him at the airport and ghosted him afterwards.
(Source)
So, all in all, she was just supposed to be there for one season only. She didn't want to have a longer contract because she prefers to work just for one season of any tv show. And because she and Ryan Murphy are good friends, he agreed on this, wanting her appearance on his new show in 2018 to help him get the series off the ground.

Tiffany Dupont (Ali Martin)
Buck and Ali met in season 2 during an earthquake where she was rescued by him and Eddie. Later on they met again and started to date. When Buck was crushed by a ladder truck and severely injured she broke up with him afterwards in the hospital. She told him that she couldn't live with him being in danger and that he wanted to continue with this risky job after his leg would be better again.
Tim stated in an interview 2019 that he loved Ali but she wasn't his first choice. Because she had chemistry with Buck and Eddie he decided to bring her back for Buck. Their relationship would have to go through the "make it or break it" because she knew that Buck's job was hard and dangerous and Ali wasn't a first responder. So, it had to be decided if she could live with that or not. In the end Tim wanted to keep her as an option for the next season as he reintroduced her but the relationship didn't make it.

Tumblr media
Megan West (Taylor Kelly)
Megan West was already one of Buck's former hook-ups who was introduced in an earlier season but came back in season 4 and 5 to play Buck's love interest. The possibility to give her a bigger role was there due to Jennifer Love Hewitt being on maternity leave. Therefore her character could get some screen time and she got a whole backstory.
Kristen Reidel, showrunner at that time, stated in an interview the inevitability of the couple's separation because of the people they were. Their characters were the complete opposites and even though sometimes opposites attract this didn't happen with Buck and Taylor. The break-up was the only logical conclusion.
Since Taylor's story arc came to an end with this break-up and the narrative of the show didn't demand another independant character, Megan West left the show after her story was told.

Tumblr media
Annelise Cepero (Natalia Dollenmeyer)
At the end of season 6 Buck met Natalia, a death doula, and started to date her. It seemed as if they had a connection (a weird one, but still a connection) and so she was Buck's girlfriend at the time season 6 ended.
In an interview mid-March Tim Minear said that he wasn't really interested in going down the road with Natalia when he took over again from Kristen Reidel as previous showrunner for season 5 and 6. He decided that it was time for Buck to stop talking about death, it was boring. He wanted Buck to live some more and to pursue joy. Buck should finally find happiness.
It seems like it was not just a creative decision. Not only storywise Tim decided to break up Buck and Natalia over hiatus. Annelise is based in New York. After the end of season 6 there was the writer's strike happening and season 7 was postponed. During that prolonged hiatus she got a contract on Broadway for "Hotel Happy" that premiered in February 2024. Therefore she couldn't join 9-1-1 again.
And since Tim was also fine with her not coming back storywise... it was mutual for her not to return.
Tumblr media
Gabrielle Walsh (Ana Flores)
Gabrielle Walsh was a guest star and played Ana Flores, Eddie's love interest. When they first met when she was Chris' teacher, they really didn't get along. But later on, in the "Jinx" episode, Eddie asked her out and they started dating.
In an insta video (uploaded on youtube) she stated that she liked being on the show and that she loved her role, praising all the cast members. She admitted that she was sad to go but in the end everybody deserved to be with who they really loved. Some people interpreted this as a comment towards Buddie because directly afterwards she also talked about the Buddie fans and that there are no hard feelings concerning them, that she loved them.
Tumblr media
Edy Ganem (Marisol)
Edy Ganem played Marisol and was brought in last-minute. She was kind of a hardware store fling for Eddie in the season 6 finale. Back then nobody knew if 9-1-1 would be renewed (or taken over by abc) so Kristen Reidel wanted to give every character a partner and love interest in some kind of closure if the show had ended back then. Marisol who was introduced earlier on on a call seemed to be a fit for Eddie in Kristen's eyes.
Coming to season 7 she was not planned to come back at first because Eddie was supposed to start dating Tommy Kinard. But then, as already stated above, Annelise Cepero wasn't able to come back as Natalia. This would have left Buck without a storyline. So Tim decided to switch from Tommy dating Eddie to Tommy dating Buck. Edy Ganem was free and could come back as Marisol for season 7 to play Eddie's love interest because Tim Minear didn't want both Buck and Eddie without a partner.
In an interview in April 2024 he stated that he had no clue about Marisol and her character. (She doesn't even have a last name.) He didn't want to give her screentime to explore the character and went with what he had. Or better, what Kristen gave him - the nun storyline. The idea was amusing to him and he thought it would help to learn more about Eddie.
In the end Marisol didn't stick around. She didn't even get a proper on screen break-up, just vanished after the end of the Vertigo storyline for Eddie.
It might have to do with the actress behind the character. She showed her true self more than once, posting trans- and homophobic things on social media and kind of victimized herself. Therefore it was a win-win to let her go after season 7, story- and personwise.
In conclusion: I read it very often that people say that the actresses left just because they were harassed by Buddie fans. Like I said in the beginning, there might have been some fans that have acted that way.
But the reasons I listed above where the cause for them to leave or not to return to the show - other obligations, wrapped storylines etc. And not just because "Buddie fans were mean to them".

See this is why I am so confused at all the Tommy stans. It was obvious from the start that his and Buck’s relationship was doomed lol. I saw so many of them excited that he was coming back like it meant something but omg the way he did??? It further proved how completely doomed their relationship was lol. I got into 911 late in the game but it’s been interesting to see some people call people who think buddie is going to happen delusional yet turn back around and say Tommy is endgame??? Endgame where lol
honestly I've been saying in actual canon (outside of everything fanon has cooked up for him) tommy is really only about as developed as ana was. he's in a few episodes, they have some fun moments together, but overall not a relationship written to last and ultimately unsurprising when it ends. especially when everything in the relationship has been overshadowed by eddie in some way (JUST like we used to point out with every other love interest these two have had). like. buck spent the ENTIRE episode talking about eddie, including every scene tommy was in lmao. tommy saw eddie as competition and is now crawling back when he thinks the competition is over. buck was sleeping w him as a distraction bc he's so lonely without eddie. I've been watching since before s4 and I've seen a lot of love interests come and go this is like. textbook for this show atp lol

Where my Eddie meta differs from the popular fanon is I don't think all his problems are because he's gay and I don't think kissing a man would heal him or really benefit him much at all. (He is gay but that's not important right now)
#adding the last line so people dont think this is a straight eddie post#people like to go on about repression but the thing is i dont think hes repressing being gay#i think he genuinely doesnt know#buck 🤝 eddie thinking everyone checks out men#whether he is gay or bi or whatever he clearly believes he is attracted to women and is trying in his relationships#and is confused when they dont work out#obviously his gayest relationship/breakup was ana because they were going to d- shot by fox snipers#but to him he just saw it as him losing attraction#(there is gay meta you could do here with his reaction to that being to just stick it out and his only other real relationship at that point#having been with shannon the mother of his child)#yet for some reason people seem to have decided he knows hes gay and is stringing women along??#if eddie knew he was gay i really believe he would not date#and also he would already be with buck but this aint about him#anyway my main thing is eddie has a lot of problems and torments but i dont think being gay is one of them#and even if he knew he was gay that would not help much in this scenario besides being with his soulmate#which would heal him in many ways#but the chris and his parents problems would still be there#and kissing a random man or being with a random man would do nothing for him#buck had to realize that while it was important to realize he was bi it also didnt heal him#i dont think eddie would even have that i really think he would just go oh okay well anyway#im rambling its not even 9am but back to the repression repressing it would require him to know it and i dont think he does#and argument could be made for him repressing his love for buck but i dont think thats exactly it either#i might make a another post more about that so im going to hold that thought#but eddie is typically very self aware so maybe thats soke of where the idea comes from but in line with that self awareness#i dont think he would date women or say hes straight if he was aware he was gay even if it was something he was repressing#(i also dont really think he would repress being gay if he did know)#eddie diaz#original txt.
