dude, i haven't even caught all the way up with the manifest au and i am still so so sorry that people are making your fic the locus of their weird hangups about, like, complex and messy human relationships. it's a situation where there's no good answer! there's no way of navigating it where nobody gets hurt and everyone goes away happy! it sucks for everyone involved! and worst of all, it's nobody's fault and there's no villain here, just people doing their best in a fucked up situation and sometimes kind of failing because, again, there's no perfect solution here.
anyway, i appreciate you for writing it and i hope you have a good day.
thank you so much anon!! you are wise 🙂‍↕️

What about Eddie wasn’t sympathetic anon? Lol
This fandom really loves to woobify Buck like he’s not a whole ass grown up. And then if Eddie is less than perfect he’s an asshole who doesn’t deserve Buck. It’s so weird to see it affecting the way people interact with fanfic
yeah idk. it's not a cut and dry right vs wrong situation, I'm not sure why some people want to read it that way instead of looking at the complexities of the story and the characters' actions. the whole point is that it's messy and difficult and there's no good way to navigate it.

If you could go back and rework like a river runs do you think you'd make Eddie more sympathetic?
I wrote it exactly as I wanted it to be.

like a river runs
epilogue, 644 words read on ao3 | read from the beginning
It's a Thursday when he finds it. One of those regular, unremarkable sort of days that you may not even recall specifically to look back on, just something that fades into the background of your life. Eddie is in the kitchen cooking while Buck moves some things around in the bedroom closet—their bedroom closet—to free up some space, and it's all new and familiar at the same time.
It’s three weeks to the day since he and Eddie found each other again, on the porch in the rain, all broken pieces and jagged edges, but somehow cut perfectly for one another all the same. Coming back together felt as much like coming home as anything could. He's still got that little bead of anxiety in his chest telling him it could still disappear at any moment, Eddie could still change his mind, but he's doing his best not to listen to it.
Something falls to the floor at his feet with a soft thud as he pulls a box from the shelf, dislodged by his rummaging. He looks down and his stomach leaps—resting there on the carpet is a little velvet box, midnight blue. He just stares at it for a moment. Then he sets the box he’s holding down on top of the dresser and bends over to pick it up.
It’s soft in his hand, and has a bit of weight to it. He turns it over once, then perches on the edge of the bed and opens it up. Inside is a beautiful silver ring with tiny crystals inlaid all along the centre that sparkle in the light. He swipes his thumb across the top, and it’s cold to the touch.
“Oh,” Eddie says. Buck looks up to find him standing in the doorway, staring at the little box in his hand.
"Was this…?" Buck starts.
"Yeah," he says.
"You kept it?"
“I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it, you know? It was supposed to be our forever.”
“Hm.” Buck nods and looks at the ring again. Our forever. Somehow it’s within reach again. He takes a deep breath. “Ask me,” he says.

right now, the book i read but didn’t “get” is saving someone’s life. right now, the movie that felt like a waste of my time is making someone else laugh at the end of a long day. someone is cooking a meal that i would hate but that comforts them and brings them joy. the painting i walked past at the museum without looking twice is someone’s favorite. people are wearing clothes i would never wear and drinking tea i would never drink. someone is dancing to that song i don’t like and singing their heart out. people are knitting and embroidering and sculpting and welding and woodburning things i will never see. two people are bonding over their love of that tv show i gave up on two episodes in. the world is so big and there is so much more to it than just me and the things i like. there is so much beauty that’s invisible to me. and maybe i should be saddened by this or afraid of it, but i’m not. i’m so happy that there is more than me in this world. i’m so happy that there is love i’m never gonna know and art that’s gonna go right over my head. i am so lucky to live here.
