Queen Mary of Denmark is a much nicer person than Cersei Lannister. But I get what the article says about her projecting a certain visual vibe.

Love Is Made With These Hands Of Mine
Fresh ingredients were rare for the Guard, they make the most out of it
AO3
Tumblr decided to delete the original version of this because I changed my URL lmao? I hate this site sometimes. The original date of this fic was 10/14/2021
Ashe had been surprised when Master Cin Drallig sent him a message that a few AgriCorp members had dropped off a few crates of food in exchange for blackmail material.
The AgriCorps rarely came to them for that, but without a doubt, it was easily voted as a go-ahead. Fresh food was good and rare for the Guard. Even with the “supply line”, as Styr called it, set up to the kitchens, the Guard almost always ended up with the leftovers still. It was the best they could do.
Nonetheless, Ashe had forwarded the information to the supplied com codes and then gone with Yin’Shinhen and Mavvo Veenningels to pick up the crates.
They had invaded Cin’s quarters after that— much to Bene’s amusement, but the teenager had picked up her datapad and books, grabbed her friend’s hand (a dark-haired girl with sharp eyes and Ashe was pretty sure her name was Miho Fukuhara, but he wasn’t sure) before the two of them left.
Fukuhara wasn’t given clearance to see their faces, after all— and technically neither was Bene, but she was Cin’s student and so it was technically a loophole.
It had taken the three of them a few hours to get everything done— Cin’s kitchen wasn’t large, and they had to work with what they had to serve nearly two-hundred and seventy Jedi.
But they made it work.
Ashe liked to cook, Yin’shinhen liked to as well, and Mavvo had originally been a Culinary Jedi before he joined the Guard.
They managed, with minimal nicks from knives on Ashe’s part.
(Which was rather funny, wasn’t it? He was so good at handling them when he wasn’t cooking, but he couldn’t go one meal prep without cutting himself at least once.)
Syo, Mari, Idus, and Atus were in the designated Guard “Break Room” when the three of them carted in the platters. Mari’s head jerked up when they entered, the blind Guard sniffing before a lazy grin settled on her face— she had known about the AgriCorp's delivery, it seemed.
Syo’s ear-feathers twitched as she sniffed as well and she looked up, as did Idus and Atus, the Nautolan’s tresses shifting as the Zabrak’s eyes dilated a bit.
“Uwahh, that smells amazing, Ash!”
Syo was the first one over to them but Ashe held a hand out, stopping her with a slight chuckle.
“Praise Yin and Mavvo too, kid,” he says, and the young woman who really was only three years younger than him huffed.
It wasn’t much, nothing fancy, but soup was nice, fed a lot of people, and was warm. Coruscant was heading into its colder months, and the Night Patrol, Snipers, and Front Guard would especially enjoy something to warm them up.
“Thanks Yin! Thanks, Mav!”
“No problem, just one bowl, though, we need enough for everyone,” The Rodian told her, already dishing up his own plate. Yin’Shinhen was doing the same, ears flicking as a few other Guards stumbled out from the bunk room, Ner Askau blinking the sleep from his eyes as Kita yawned. Tanu wasn’t even walking, the pantoran being carried by the Cimzo, the Talz’s looking just as tired as the others.
“Hurry and get some while it’s warm,” Ashe chuckled, reaching over and patting Roq as the Charhound bounded out as well.
Mari never ate much, he knew the other half of her bowl would be Roq’s. She wasn’t much of a soup person, in all fairness— not all of them were, but it was warm and even though Cin had done his best, there was little doubt that the Guard Halls were freezing in the colder months.
Still, Ashe smiled as Yohi and Opaku popped out of the vent system, running over and hugging his legs before running to the others getting bowls dished up. K’Ramga followed them out, though shut the grate after him, the Tusken chortling and giving Ashe a bow, signing his thanks before following the Jawa and Valapset over.
Sienna and Dron both popped their heads out from the Slicer’s Den before moving to join the rest, the Nautolan and Besalisk vanishing back into the said den when they were done with grabbing their bowls.
Cin came out from his office, greeted some of the Guards before taking a bowl and returning to work, and Ashe saw a few Guard take extra bowls and vanish down the hall to where the exit hatch was to get up to the Bird’s Nest. The Snipers could eat up there, no one ever saw them.
“Ashe,” Yin’Shinhen rumbled as he walked over, two bowls in hand, and Ashe blinked, chuckling a bit as the older Guard pressed the bowl into his hands. His bandaged fingers warmed and he let out a soft sigh before huffing as the large feline’s paw ruffled his hair.
“You eat too, you made half of this.”
“All I did was cut stuff up and put it in a pot, you and Mavvo did most of the work,” he huffed, raising the bowl to his lips.
( Using a spoon was for boring people— and the fact was that the Guard really didn’t have spoons clean at the moment. A few had been found, but most were just drinking the soup. )
The Togorian chuffed, leaning back against the back of the sofa— one of three that were in the room.
“Everyone’s happy tonight. A far cry from the usual that’s been going on,” Aculeatus said from the other side and both of them turned to look down at the giant Nautolan.
“You’re right about that,” Ashe murmurs, closing his eyes for a moment.
War.
War wasn’t heroic. Not to the Guard. Even if the Jedi were seen as heroes, it wasn’t.
It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t cut and dry as people thought. And all the Guard could do was wait.
Wait and take the frustrations thrown onto them.
The Guard could withstand strikes from others. And so far Ashe’s only broken three ribs from getting slammed into a wall.
War had damaged the Guard more than people thought but… it also made moments like these so bittersweet.
To see the Guard eating together, talking and laughing.
It warmed Ashe.
It really did.
for reference, I've been calling F "Fukuhara" after her English VA (Miho is just another name I chose for her given name)
Syo and Opaku are both members of non-canon star wars races— Syo from a fan-created race (me, I'm the fan) and Opaku from a crossover I was messing around with (Sky Children of the Light)

The livestream for the Denmark/Iceland state banquet has started. It's the first incoming state visit of the new reign so I expect Queen Mary to wear the Emerald Parure Tiara but I would love to see her debut Queen Ingrid's Floral Aigrette Tiara.

Now that the Histories Ficathon is over I'm making good on my threat/promise... please assign the Lancasterlings (and their spouses, if you want) a prehistoric creature to go alongside Thomasaurus Rex.
yes...haha yes! 😈
this got long so under the cut:
Henry V:
Okay hear me out- we keep keep the swan theme and connection to Mary and her family as strong, tight throughline also I love the idea of Hal beating up people aggressive-swan-style. But- hear me out- bigger. So I'm thinking the giant Pleistocene swan Cygnus falconeri. It's a beautiful morning in France, and you are a horrible swan.
Artist: Sergio Gauci
Given Henry VI may have gotten his panther badge from his mom, may I also propose for Catherine de Valois the Eurasian extinct giant cheetah species Acinonyx pardinensis?
Artist: Velizar Simeonovski
Thomas, Duke of Clarence:
Obviously a T. rex, but I'm gonna stick this bit in from Brusatte's The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs to show how perfect that choice is 🤌✨
I admittedly know very little about Margaret Holland, but I was kind of compelled by how her children from her first marriage were kept in her and Thomas' household...that and Margaret wanting her book of hours to prepare her to "always be redy to dye," reminds me of the oviraptorid fossil that died and was preserved in position of protecting its eggs. Something about that as a parallel to her being buried alongside both her husbands too....
Artist: Zhao Chuang
John, Duke of Bedford:
Maybe it's because he himself seemed constantly stressed and running around doing some sort of assignment, and in the plays it's sometimes played as if he dies from sheer exhaustion, but I kind of like the idea of a beardog like Ischyrocyon or Amphicyon. The beardogs were famously generalists in hunting and in both of the above genera, it's hypothesized they may have been persistence hunters.
youtube
Also voting for Anne of Burgundy as an alvarezsauroid like Mononykus or Shuvuuia, which have been compared to nocturnal avian hunters like owls 🤎🤍
Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester:
So a guy having a pretty productive relationship to his family (not perfect, but pretty good compared to others I could name...) trying his best to be an actual protector of his relative's kid, having a lot of relationship drama, and also getting into spats with people reads as very ceratopsian to me lmao. To de-fang him a just a little, I'm going with Kosmoceratops. Those folded horns on the top edge of the frill and side-facing brow horns probably aren't going to help you that much at Agincourt, but I'm sure that pretty lady from Cobham thinks they're fire 👍
Artist: Lukas Panzarin
Speaking of: I like the idea of Eleanor of Cobham maybe being assigned with some sort of plesiosaur? Sort of bridging the siren to mermaid to modern creature of our mythical imagination Nessie pipeline :)
Artist: James Kuether
For Jacoba, Smilodon. They're smart and fierce so fitting. Also what she deserves ❤️🔥
Artist: Mehdi Nikbakhsh
Blanche:
Unfortunately I couldn't find a whole lot on her, but that sort of elusive energy kind of reminds me of Coelurus fragilis, a possible Jurassic relative of the tyrannosaurs, but not much is known about their evolution or ecology. That and it being a more gracile and swift-footed creature kind of has Blanche vibes to me 🤍
Artist: Nobu Tamura
Ludwig deserves nothing and gets nothing bye
Philippa, Queen of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway:
I know in the fic poor Philippa seems pretty freaked out by Thomasaurus' size, but I'm partial to her being a big death lizard too– maybe like those coming-of-age mermaid stories but she's...bigger and teeth-ier 😅. For a similar reason to seeing what Thomas would do at Baugé, I'd like to see Philippa defend Copenhagen as a Mosasaurus hoffmannii. Let's see the Hanseatic League try to get past THIS 🫡 min dronning 🫡
I like the idea of Erik also being associated with something aquatic though maybe not as intimidating as Philippa...maybe an early whale relative like Dorudon?
Artist: David Arruda Mourao

When you are in a family, it is not a matter of course that you have a close relationship, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden notes with a laugh.
But this is nevertheless the case between the royal families of Sweden and Denmark.
- These are good relationships, she says.
Queen Margrethe is her father's cousin, and she has known both the queen and Crown Prince Frederik all her life.
In the week leading up to the Danish throne change, DR met both Crown Princess Victoria and Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon for an interview, where they lavishly paid tribute to Queen Margrethe and her long period as regent.
For the future Queen of Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria, Queen Margrethe "has absolutely been a strong role model".
- It is absolutely remarkable how she has been queen of Denmark, she says.

The History of the Title of Queen
By: Jone Johnson Lewis, 18 November 2019
In English, the word for a female ruler is "queen," but that's also the word for the spouse of a male ruler.
Where did the title come from, and what are some variations on the title in common usage?
In English, the word “queen” apparently developed simply as a designation of the king's wife, from the word for wife, cwen.
It is a cognate with the Greek root gyne (as in gynecology, misogyny) meaning woman or wife, and with the Sanskrit janis meaning woman.
Among the Anglo-Saxon rulers of pre-Norman England, the historical record does not always even record the name of the king’s wife, as her position was not considered one requiring a title (and some of those kings had multiple wives, perhaps at the same time; monogamy was not universal at the time).
The position gradually evolves towards the current sense, with the word “queen.”
The first time a woman in England was crowned—with a coronation ceremony—as queen was in the 10th century CE:
The queen Aelfthryth or Elfrida, wife of King Edgar "the Peaceable," stepmother of Edward "the Martyr," and mother of King Ethelred (Aethelred) II "the Unready" or "Poorly Counseled."
English is unusual in having a word for female rulers that is rooted in a woman-oriented word.
In many languages, the word for a woman ruler is derived from a word for male rulers:
Roman Augusta (for women related to the emperor); emperors were titled Augustus.
Spanish reina; king is rey
French reine; king is roi
German for king and queen: König und Königin
German for emperor and empress: Kaiser und Kaiserin
Polish is król i królowa
Croatian is kralj i kraljica
Finnish is kuningas ja kuningatar
Scandinavian languages use a different word for king and queen, but the word for queen is derived from a word meaning “master”:
Swedish kung och drottning, Danish or Norwegian konge og dronning, Icelandic konungur og drottning
Hindi uses rājā and rānī; rānī derives from Sanskrit rājñī which is in turn derived from rājan for king, as is rājā
A queen consort is the wife of a reigning king.
The tradition of a separate coronation of a queen consort developed slowly and was unevenly applied.
Marie de Medici, for instance, was queen consort of King Henry IV of France.
There were only queens consort, no reigning queens of France, as French law assumed Salic Law for the sake of the royal title.
The first queen consort in England that we can find to have been crowned in a formal ceremony and coronation, Aelfthryth, lived in the 10th century CE.
Henry VIII infamously had six wives. Only the first two had formal coronations as queen, but the others were known as queens during the time their marriages endured.
Ancient Egypt didn't use a variation on the male rulership term, pharaoh, for queens consort.
They were called the Great Wife, or God's Wife.
In Egyptian theology, Pharaohs were considered incarnations of the gods.
A regent is someone who governs when the sovereign or monarch is unable to do so, due to being a minor, being absent from the country, or a disability.
Some queen consorts were briefly rulers in the stead of their husbands, sons or even grandsons, as regents for their male relative.
However, the power was supposed to return to the males when the minor child reached his majority or when the absent male returned.
The king's wife was often a choice for a regent, as she could be trusted to have the interests of her husband or son as a priority, and be less likely than one of many nobles to turn on the absent or minor or disabled king.
Isabella of France, English queen consort of Edward II and mother of Edward III, is infamous in history for having deposed her husband, later having him murdered, and then trying to hold on to the regency for her son even after he reached his majority.
The Wars of the Roses arguably began with disputes around the regency for Henry IV, whose mental condition kept him from ruling for some time.
Margaret of Anjou, his queen consort, played a very active and controversial role during Henry's periods described as insanity.
Although France did not recognize the right of a woman to inherit a royal title as queen, many French queens served as regents, including Louise of Savoy.
A queen regnant is a woman who rules in her own right, rather than exercising power as a wife of a king or even a regent.
Through most of history, succession was agnatic (through male heirs) with primogeniture being a common practice, where the eldest was first in succession (occasional systems where younger sons were preferred have also existed).
In the 12th century, Norman King Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, faced an unexpected dilemma near the end of his life:
His only surviving legitimate son died when his ship capsized en route from the continent to the island.
William had his nobles swear support for his daughter’s right to rule in her own right: Empress Matilda, already widowed from her first marriage to the Holy Roman Emperor.
When Henry I died, many of the nobles supported her cousin Stephen instead, and a civil war ensued, with Matilda never being formally crowned as queen regnant.
In the 16th century, consider the effect of such rules on Henry VIII and his multiple marriages, probably largely inspired by trying to get a male heir when he and his first wife Catherine of Aragon had only a living daughter, no sons.
On the death of Henry VIII’s son, King Edward VI, Protestant supporters tried to install the 16-year-old Lady Jane Grey as queen.
Edward had been persuaded by his advisors to name her as his successor, contrary to his father’s preference that Henry’s two daughters would be given preference in succession, even though his marriages to their mothers had been annulled and the daughters declared, at various times, to be illegitimate.
However, that effort was abortive, and after just nine days, Henry’s elder daughter, Mary, was declared queen as Mary I, England’s first queen regnant.
Other women, through Queen Elizabeth II, have been queen's regnant in England and Great Britain.
Some European legal traditions prohibited women from inheriting lands, titles and offices.
This tradition, known as Salic Law, was followed in France, and there were no queens regnant in France’s history.
Spain followed Salic Law at times, leading to a 19th-century conflict over whether Isabella II could reign.
In the early 12th century, Urraca of Leon and Castile ruled in her own right. Later, Queen Isabella ruled Leon and Castile in her own right and Aragon as co-ruler with Ferdinand.
Isabella’s daughter, Juana, was the only remaining heir at Isabella’s death. She became the queen of Leon and Castile, while Ferdinand continued to rule Aragon until his death.
In the 19th century, Queen Victoria's firstborn was a daughter. Victoria did later have a son who then moved ahead of his sister in the royal queue.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, several royal houses of Europe have removed the male-preference rule from their succession rules.
A dowager is a widow holding a title or property that was her late husband's.
The root word is also found in the word "endow."
Among the British peerage, a dowager continues to use the female form of her late husband's title so long as the present male title-holder does not have a wife.
When the present male title-holder marries, his wife assumes the female form of his title and the title used by the dowager is the female title prepended with Dowager ("Dowager Countess of ...") or by using her first name before the title ("Jane, Countess of ...").
The title "Dowager Princess of Wales" or "Princess Dowager of Wales" was given to Catherine of Aragon when Henry VIII arranged to annul their marriage.
This title refers to Catherine's previous marriage to Henry's older brother, Arthur, who was still Prince of Wales at his death, widowing Catherine.
At the time of the marriage of Catherine and Henry, it was alleged that Arthur and Catherine had not consummated their marriage due to their youth, freeing Henry and Catherine to avoid the church prohibition on marriage to one's brother's widow.
At the time Henry wanted to obtain an annulment of the marriage, he alleged that Arthur and Catherine's marriage had been valid, providing grounds for the annulment.
A dowager queen whose son or daughter is currently ruling is called a Queen Mother.
Several recent British queens have been called Queen Mother.
Queen Mary of Teck, mother of Edward VIII and George VI, was popular and known for her intelligence.
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who did not know when she married that her brother-in-law would be pressured to abdicate and that she would become queen, was widowed when George VI died in 1952.
As the mother of the reigning Queen Elizabeth II, she was known as Queen Mum until her death 50 years later in 2002.
When the first Tudor king, Henry VII, was crowned, his mother, Margaret Beaufort, acted much as if she were the Queen Mother, though because she had never been a queen herself, the title Queen Mother was not official.
Some queen mothers were also regents for their sons if the son was not yet of age to take on the monarchy, or when their sons were out of the country and unable to rule directly.

Little Girl in a Blue Armchair
Pictorial structure and clarity are the foundation of Cassatt's art. Under Edgar Degas' tutelage, she began to collect and study Japanese prints; their patterns and asymmetric designs greatly influenced her work. Here she placed the girl, the focus of the composition, off-center. The armchairs form a pattern encircling an oddly shaped patch of gray floor in the middle of the picture. As in Japanese art, the forms are tilted up, and the edge of the canvas crops the image.
Cassatt's strong colors and energetic brushwork mark her connection with the French impressionists. In style and subject matter, her art is close to that of Degas and Edouard Manet. Degas, in fact, made suggestions about the composition of this painting and reworked parts of its background.
In Cassatt's pictures, light does not dissolve form. Instead, objects retain their mass and coherence with light enhancing their physical presence.

H.M. The King's speech at the state banquet in connection with Denmark's state visit to Sweden
Deres Majestæter, Deres Kongelige Højheder, Hr. Talman, Hr.
Vi føler os hjemme her.
Deres Majestæt, kære Carl Gustaf, ”For Sverige – i tiden”.
Speech held by H.M. King Frederik X at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on May 6, 2024.
