Hi! Shortcake here, i j wanted 2 request a rodrick x sweet reader, the kinda girl that rlly enjoys pink and skirts and things like that. Ty, have a nice day! <3
First of all, love the nickname..second thanks for the request. I hope you like this.
"Rodrick, don't blink."
"Because you are literally poking my eyes with your finger," Rodrick argued. He had agreed to let Y/n do his makeup today. He was amazed at the amount of makeup she had and was just ready to be her guinea pig.
"I'm being very gentle Rodrick, if you could just stay still then my fingers won't poke you."
He melted at her sweet voice. His eyes fluttered at her gentle touch. They were so different yet they were made for each other. He smirked as an idea crossed his mind. "You wanna use glitter next?"
Y/n gasped "Would you let me?"
Rodrick just wanted to smush her cheeks and kiss all over her face. She looked extra cute today in her all-pink attire and a matching hairband. "Of course, I would." He took out the glitter pouch from her hot pink makeup kit and handed it to her.
Rodrick couldn't help but love her more as she giggled and started applying glitter to his cheeks.
She gasped "Oh my gosh Rodrick you look so pretty."
Rodrick smushed her cheeks and smacked kisses across her blushing cheeks. "Thank you lovie."
..................................................
The next day Rodrick would glare at anyone who even tried to make a sound when they saw Rodrick in full makeup. He has always been protective of Y/n's feelings since day one.
The boys in school who called her childish and pretentious for her all-pink attire would don a purple bruise on their faces the next day.
When Rodrick volunteered to teach Y/n to play the drums he painted his spare drumsticks pink, and when she found out she kissed him until his cheeks turned to her favourite colour.
He somehow convinced Susan to get him a pair of pink socks so he could match with Y/n when she wore her own pair of pink socks.
Sure her pink aesthetic clashed with his emo aesthetic, but nothing makes him happier than seeing his girl happy when they match.
..........................................................
Once Rodrick had visited her home and he was genuinely impressed how she managed to get everything in pink and still make her room look good.
All her shampoos, her dresses and even her pillow were in various shades of pink. Rodrick nicknamed her doll because she resembled a Barbie doll. He even managed to get her a Barbie doll at Christmas that he claimed looked like her. In return, she dressed up her Ken like him, and he made sure she placed it next to her Barbie doll.
Every time he would visit her he would first make sure his Ken doll is with her Barbie doll.
Rodrick started collecting random things just because they are pink-coloured. Movie tickets, guitar picks, flowers, bottle lids etc. He would collect them and give them to Y/n the next time they meet.
He never thought he would like the colour so much, but he would bring all the pinks in the world to her just to see her smile.

ive tried to request and then immediately talked myself out of it 3 times now bc i get so nervous about asking off anon 😭 uhh can i get the prime assets dressing up :3c or like their clothing habits/preferences
Dressing them up like barbie dolls. I should do one of those dress up memes for them and draw them in stupid outfits. I'm putting Coyle in a skirt.
COYLE
- This man would wear leather 90% of the time, including leather pants. He takes wonderful care of his leather as well, makes sure to condition it as often as needed to keep it beautiful. If you see him sniffing his leather jacket, ignore it.
- It does not matter that he's sweating to death in said leather, he's not taking it off. He can't let you see his shirt with puppies on it underneath /j
- Prefers his clothing rather tight, super loose fitting clothing feels like it gets in the way. He likes the feeling of the wires wrapped around him for that reason.
- Would commit denim on denim crimes. Denim jeans, denim jacket, denim boots (referred to as doots by futterman). He does this to piss people off.
- Despises too much color in an outfit. Bright and colorful disgusts him, he's wearing neutrals and only neutrals.
- Would let a reagent decorate his beard with bows if he was promised pistachios. This is only if the pistachios are in his hands while they decorate.
- You'd think he'd wear heeled boots to make himself seem taller, but you'd be wrong! He's got the insoles that make him taller instead :)
- I think you could convince him to wear a rodeo cowboy outfit. Tassels and all that. You'd tell him he looks cool and he'd believe you.
- Cargo short dad vibes. Each pocket is full of cigarettes and/or pistachios. He doesn't care about the fashion he likes the utility. Takes him a good 5 minutes to get anything out of a pocket though.
- Wore fingerless gloves when he was younger bc he thought they made him look cooler. He'd try them on again and Franco would bully him relentlessly for trying to act younger than he is. He's crying in his room afterward.
MOTHER GOOSEBERRY
- She'd be the English teacher with a collection of fun skirts. Cute patterns, silly patterns, gaudy patterns, you name it, she's wearing it. Futterman says she looks like a rainbow threw up on her.
- She'd also love bold earring choices. Big earrings that make you double-take to make sure you saw them right, earrings that light up, anything with frills. She's a lover of the bold, partially because the children love her crazy styles.
- She'd play around with different lipstick colors if she had access to them. A nice purple lip would make her happy. If Futterman didn't call her a whore for wearing it.
- Futterman would also call her a whore if she tried to wear a shorter skirt, but she'd still tried to get away with it. Not super short, mind you, she's got an image to keep up for the children, but maybe something a little below the knees?
- If a reagent offered to do her hair, like put little accessories in it and detangle it, she'd cry. She wants to feel feminine and she wants to feel pretty, and a pretty bow might help her with that.
- She'd love to wear a petticoat under her skirts, the extra poof would make her feel fun. That's if Futterman didn't find a way to make a fat joke about it.
- Futterman himself would have a collection of very dapper bow ties. Polka-dots and stripes and maybe even little stars, and a variety of colors. He feels fancy when she changes them out for him.
- He'd hate it, but I think Phyllis would have a variety of little hats for him. I wanna see him in one of those little propeller hats. Spin it and she takes off of the ground.
- If it were modern times I could absolutely see her wearing a giant t-shirt with something like a kitten or a puppy on it. Maybe even tie-dye. She'd be a big t-shirt enjoyer is the main idea here.
- Would LOVE chunky heels or maybe even platforms if she was feeling adventurous, but I have this bad feeling she already got shit for being a tall woman. Let her be an even taller queen.
FRANCO
- I love the concept that he wears his clothes too big to feel smaller. While I'm not sure if Murkoff gave him his outfit that he wears in game, I don't think he's too upset about it being oversized.
- I also think that he likes wearing his suits bc they make him feel a little less ugly. He knows the suit is dirty and stained with a bunch of different shit, but a suit is a suit, and suits make you handsome, right?
- He's very particular about his bow ties, he only likes a select few patterns and colors. They still have to match with his suits, though. Can't have himself looking like a fool who doesn't know how to dress!
- Would attempt to steal one of Futterman's bow ties bc he likes it and thinks it'd look better on him. Would almost get fucking annihilated as a result.
- We know his hygiene isn't great from the comics, but I think he's at least slightly ashamed about just how filthy his outfit is. I think he's just kinda accepted that it's not going to be cleaned/he has no way to clean it.
- If you put him in a brand new zoot suit and stuck him in front of a mirror, he'd try to act cocky and like he knew he was handsome as hell. But you'd absolutely be able to tell by how he's smiling and how his eyes are watery that he hasn't felt this attractive in awhile.
- A personalized pacifier WOULD be considered a part of an outfit. If his paci matched his outfit he'd feel so damn cool. And if it had his name on it and looked nice? He'd feel like a prince.
- He's gotta wear his dress shoes, they're a mandatory part of his look, but he wishes they had a little more heel to them. He's joining Coyle in the insoles that make him taller. My short king.
- Outside of the suits, he'd love a soft, heavy sweater. Something that really makes him feel like he's being cuddled. The color wouldn't really matter to him, as long as it offered him some comfort.
- I'm a firm believer in him wearing diamond earrings. I know it doesn't fit as much with the baby part of him, but the mobster in him loves showing off his wealth. He'd fiddle with them a lot, though.
I accidentally assigned Gooseberry's style as "lesbian art teacher" and I won't be taking it back ❤️
#leland coyle#mother gooseberry#dr futterman#phyllis futterman#franco barbi#il bambino#outlast trials#outlast#outlast asks#outlast trials asks#franco and phyllis i always feel sad for#i just write coyle as the menace i view him as

Shiggy's Slutty Lil' Waist
Shigaraki Tomura x Reader
CW: Smut, Minors DNI, I will block your ass, talk about crop tops on men and gray sweatpants. Don't like? Bully me it'll be foreplay <3 /j
AN: I saw a picture of Johnny Depp in a crop top. We all know the one. And yk what? Shiggy has the same slutty lil waist. And so far all three of my posts have been about Shiggy. Will that change? Idk ask me next week. It's my comfort character and I can seek toxic comfort WHEN I WANT-
~Darling XOXO
☾ Shigaraki Tomura has the sluttiest fucking waist.
☾ That's it. That's the post.
☾ No, I'm kidding. I'll elaborate for thirsty whores like me. And Barbie. Shout out to them.
☾ Shigaraki obviously has the fits going for him. Name one outfit he wore that didn't slap. Exactly. You can't. So contrary to what people think, I think Shigaraki takes a bit (Not a lot, do not get me wrong) of care in how he looks. He has an image to maintain after all. How can he be expected to be the big, bad leader of the LOV if he doesn't look like it.
☾ That being said, I think at some point it just comes naturally to him to dress in ways that suit his body.
☾ And we all know he has the body to do so. After he left that big ol' test tube? Did y'all SEE his arch? Fuck man I couldn't arch better if I TRIED. Like,-
☾ Okay before this post turns into a tiktok comment section on the thirstiest of Gojo Edits, let me continue.
☾ My point here, is he probably doesn't dress like we see in the anime all the time. That would get tiring. Drain his mana level if you would. And he needs time to recharge.
☾ So, In this essay post, I'm here to argue that Shigaraki Tomura wears crop tops that barely brush past his nipples to show off his slutty little waist.
☾ You know, the shirts that had a hole in the front? Instead of sewing them like a reasonable man, he rips them from that hole all the way around. Which means his crop tops vary in length. Every single one of them.
☾ And that leaves perfect access for you to wrap your hands around his waist and just hold him like that. He hates it. No, he doesn't.
☾ In all truth, Shigaraki loves the feelings of your hands on his midsection because it's such an intimate place to him. He loves feeling you touch him with no fear, even though he knows the second he's done with you, he's taking those hands and dusting you.
☾ Y'all didn't think I was about to turn my greatest number one villain into a *gasp* nice person, did you? /lh
☾ Sorry, not here. Shigaraki does not do love. Only with me, dw guys I'll treat him right :). He's a man with needs that get in the way of his bigger plans. Sorry, not sorry.
☾ Anyway, trail your hands up his ribs and play with his nipples. Pinch them and roll them between your thumb and forefinger. It buys you another day. Additionally, you get to play with his fat tits.
☾ He has one shirt that he outgrew after his transformation that absolutely hugs his double dee, mommy milking, calcium cannon, honga-bazongas, dippin dots, whatyoudoingouthere withallthattiddies, boinga boinga, bouncing bangers.
☾ This one magically turned into a crop top. It was crazy. Shoutout to whoever put it in the wash to shrink it. They a real one.
☾ It was me.
☾ And it's like that one meme of the guy looking at something with his pecs right there and the lady is just O-O at them. Which...Yeah me too.
☾ Anyway, he wears it all the time because he's convinced it still fits.
☾ Play with his...pecs... through the shirt. He has the most sensitive nipples and it just brushes against them just right and...He likes it is all I'm gonna say.
☾ Now, I know what we're all thinking, 'Darling, what about the pants?' And Darling's got you, baby cakes.
☾ I only tease in the bedroom :)
☾ Grey sweatpants season is EVERY season for this man. He's got like three pairs he cycles through. Kurogiri HATES them. He tries to throw them out and replace them with sensible jeans or slacks.
☾ Never works. He's like a raccoon with stocks of them EVERYWHERE.
☾ Anyway, so he's got his gray sweats and his slutty little crop tops. Let me paint this picture for Y'all.
☾ Shigaraki Tomura wearing a tight white t-shirt that's shrunk into a crop top, clinging to his chest as he stretches his arms above his head, biceps straining against the fabric. His toned abdomen is constricting with his every breath of his, on full display along with the angles of his slutty lil' waist. Your eyes follow down to his belly button and following the trail of white hairs that lead to his v-line, the waistband of his pants just barely clinging to his hips but hugging the delicious outline of his cock, which, while even flaccid, is enough to make anyone drool.
☾ Y'all seeing the vision now? Because I do.
☾ I'm seeing the vision. I'm salivating over the vision. I'm ready to turn into a Gojo fan girl at this point. Like I'm drooling. No lube. No protection. No-
☾ And if you start playing with his tits like this? In this outfit?
☾ He's trying to swat you away, you're getting in the way of his game, but your hands are feeling too good. He's only half paying attention to the pixels anyway, but it's about the principle of letting you get your way.
☾ But you can see you're winning with the way his cock twitches in his pants, throbbing in plain sight.
☾ Your lips trace along his neck and suddenly the pause screen pops up. There's a dark patch already soaking through his pants and they're lose enough your fingers can dip right past the band and trace along his shaft.
☾ He's already groaning, debating if this is worth his time. Worth the distraction.
☾ When your pretty little fingers wrap around his cock and give it a firm tug, he decides it is.
☾ Do not think he rolls over and let's you do as you please however.
☾ No, no, no. He's pulling you over the couch and pinning you as he gets rid of the bigger distractions stopping from doing exactly what he wants.
☾ If he leaves you a dripping, drooling mess on the couch, that's your own fault really.
☾ But who really cares at that point, because in the end, you won anyway <3
☾ But FUCK does Shiggy have a slutty lil' waist.

♡ Barbie Girl ♡ | AU!Joel Miller x f! Reader
A/N: this was such a fun lil idea to pursue and I love the idea of Joel wearing pink just cause he knows how happy it makes Sarah ♡
~word count: 1.5k~
Summary: Joel, Sarah and Tommy go to the Barbie movie opening weekend
Warnings: none, lots of fluff, Joel is a feminist icon, soft dad vibes, Joel is a girl dad himbo, he’ll do anything to make his kid happy, Sarah is an icon on her own, Tommy is Tommy of course but he’s so himbo too, AU that takes place in 2023, Joel is a progressive dad, Sarah loves him for it, little bit of flirting with Joel and the reader, no age gap, some spoilers for the Barbie movie! (+18 for language) minors dni.
July 2023, Austin Texas
Joel Miller never would consider himself to be a ‘girl dad’ as the younger generation would refer to him as. He had to literally look up what the word ‘DILF’ meant when Sarah told him one day after school that all of the moms thought he was attractive. He had Google on speed dial just so he could feel like he was ‘hip’ again. 36 years old and he felt older than ever. Sarah was a big help of course and steered her dad in the right direction political wise. Her dad was a good man of course, but nothing made her happier than when she had his full support as a young woman. Before the Barbie movie came out, Joel and Sarah spent every weekend volunteering at a local women’s shelter. The bumper of his truck was decorated with women-empowering stickers including a sticker that said, ‘Abortion is Healthcare’ and ‘Women’s Rights Are Human Rights.’ He didn’t stop there of course. He also had a BLM sticker, ‘Dismantle White Supremacy’, ‘Eat The Rich’ and he still had a Bernie sticker front and center.
The weekend that the Barbie movie came out, Joel had already pre ordered tickets for him, Sarah and Tommy as well who had multiple pink shirts for Joel to choose from. Sarah had insisted that they all had to wear pink and Joel would do just about anything to make his baby girl happy.
“Are ya sure your old man doesn’t look silly in this?” Joel gestured to his hot pink tee-shirt with a soft huff as he observed his appearance in the mirror.
“Dad, why do you think you look silly? Pink is totally your color!” Sarah responded with a genuine smile as she playfully placed the Barbie baseball cap on his mess of brown curls. “Do you or do you not feel Bonita?”
Joel stifled a chuckle, shaking his head as he fixed the cap on his head. “I feel Bonita.”
The drive to the movie theater consisted of listening to a Barbie inspired Spotify playlist off of Sarah’s phone. Joel and Tommy proudly knew every word to the Barbie Girl song of course. Once they arrived to the theater, Joel was awe-struck at the amount of people who were dressed in pink and he felt less self-conscious about his hot pink shirt when he saw numerous guys and dads wearing pink shirts as well.
At first he was confused when a group of women around his age said, “Hi Ken” to him and Tommy, and “Hi Barbie” to Sarah who immediately responded with a wave and, “Hi Barbie!” She gently nudged her dad with her elbow as he stood there blinking, mouth opening and closing like a fish. “Dad, you gotta say hi Barbie! Back.”
“Oh. OH! Shit, sorry sweet pea.” He cleared his throat under his breath before he raised his hand with a sheepish smile. “Hi Barbie!” He was looking right at you out of all of your friends. You were dressed head to toe in pink and you mirrored the same sheepish smile that he did. Joel turned to his daughter afterwards, cheeks feeling inflamed. “Did I do alright? So, I say that everytime someone says hi Ken?”
“You did great, dad! Yeah, so everytime a Barbie says, ‘hi Ken!’ You say, ‘hi Barbie!’, and when a Ken says, ‘hi Ken!’ You say, ‘hi Ken!’”
“Yeah, brother. It ain’t that hard.” Tommy chimed in and wrapped his arm around Joel’s shoulders and gave them a light squeeze.
“Shuddup Tommy.” Joel grumbled under his breath.
Your friends from your college days insisted that you join them to go see the new Barbie movie. At first you were against the idea until you read reviews and once you saw it was a movie that empowered women, you were all in. It was your idea in the end to dress head to toe in pink and you and your friends each had a comfort Barbie in your purses as well.
When you saw Joel Miller across the way looking confused as all hell when your friends said ‘hi Ken!’ You thought he was adorable for two reasons. One being he clearly was wearing pink to support his daughter and two, he looked proud of himself after saying ‘hi Barbie!’ To you and your friends.
“Now, that’s a real man if I’ve ever seen one!” Your one friend, Jessica excitedly whispered to the group as if she was back in her highschool days in the passing period hallways.
“Okay, but his brother? Jesus Christ, if I wasn’t married I would be all over that!” Avery chimed in with a giggle.
“How do you know that they’re brothers? They could be two dads taking their daughter to the movies.” You responded with a shrug as you pulled up the tickets on your phone.
“Nah, they look related and besides, the one with the baseball cap was looking right at you babe!” Jaimie commented with a small grin as she nudged your side gently.
“No, he wasn’t.” You responded with a light laugh and shake of your head.
“Girl, he looked like a blubbering fish when he saw you.” Your friends all affirmed.
Your friends were right on the money with that one. Joel Miller was doing his absolute best to check you out in the most respectful way he could while he was in the line for popcorn. Sarah of course caught the way her dad was looking at you, and she was determined to get him to muster up the courage to talk to you after the movie.
The movie was everything Sarah had imagined it to be. She laughed, she cried and Joel and Tommy had teared up during some of the scenes. Especially when Barbie and Ken travel to the real world and the first thing she experiences is being cat-called and objectified by men. The patriarchy was alive and well outside of Barbie land and as a straight man, Joel recognized that he and Tommy had an easy life compared to their female counterparts. This didn’t mean that they agreed with it. In fact, Joel and Tommy were fully against the patriarchal system.
Sarah found herself hugging her dad tightly as the credits rolled and he was gently smoothing down her curls and kissing the top of her head. Sometimes Joel felt guilty over the fact that Sarah no longer had a mother figure in her life, but it was moments like these that reminded him that he was just a dad doing his best for his kid who he loved so dearly. “I love you so much, baby girl. I’ll always fight for you. Okay, kiddo?” He whispered softly with his lips against her temple.
Sarah hugged him tighter. “I love you so much dad. Thank you for always being there for me.”
Tommy was tearing up again.
The three Millers took a selfie with the Barbie poster just outside the movie theater with their faces squished into the frame. The picture was being taken while you were standing outside of the women’s bathroom waiting for your friends. You watched as Joel struggled to get his phone at the right angle, so you took it upon yourself to go over and help. “Hi Kens, hi Barbie! Would you guys like me to take a picture of you?”
Joel already felt his cheeks begin to heat up. “Hi Barbie. That would be great if ya could. Can never get these damn angles right with this thing. I uh—I like your outfit. It’s very Barbie.” He commented softly.
“Thanks, Ken. I really like your baseball cap.” You responded with a genuine smile as he handed you his phone. You took a few steps back so that all three Miller’s would be in the frame. You took a few photos before handing him his phone back just as your friends were departing from the bathroom.
“Hey, Barbie? Before you go, my dad is way too shy to say it but he thinks you’re super duper pretty.” Sarah proclaimed without skipping a beat.
Joel was beet red now as he scrubbed a hand down his face, fingertips scraping across his beard. “Sarah! You can’t just—” He sighed with a nervous smile. “Okay, it’s true Barbie. I do think you’re super duper pretty. Cats out of the bag thanks to my daughter.” He gave Sarah a playful warning look and mussed up her curls.
“Well Ken, it’s your lucky day because I think you’re really handsome. Do you wanna see Oppenheimer with me next weekend?”
“I would absolutely love to go see Oppenheimer with you next weekend Barbie.” Joel didn’t hesitate to respond.
“It’s a date. See you next weekend, Ken.” You exchanged phone numbers before you made your way over to your friends who were waiting for you.
“This Barbie has a date next weekend!” You told your friends the good news and they all excitedly cheered for you.
As soon as Joel and Sarah got home, Sarah dug out her old box of Barbie’s and brought them down to the living room, while Joel had found all of the Barbie DVD’s that Sarah insisted he keep. They spent the rest of the evening playing with her Barbie’s and watching the Princess and the Pauper; Sarah’s all time favorite Barbie movie.

My Draculaura headcanons!:
(i mix g1 and g3!)
- Draculaura in my head is childhood friends with Valentine, they used to play together, have tea parties and sleepovers, after they rebonded Drac reassured Val it was fine, and hey, they still have tea parties, like old times
- in my headcanons she still leans MORE to the vampire side than witch, and in witch terms, she's actually a necromancer (big difference) and tarot reader
- she was the one to bring Ghoulia back to life and that actually makes them bond since it breaks how vampires tended to see zombies
- hear me out....demigirl?
- vivid fan of Melanie Martinez, likes J-pop and kawaii musics, loves musicals her fav being legally blond and listens to Malice Mizer
- she LOVES japanese subcultures and I actually picture her living some years in Japan more specifically Kyoto after graduating MH
- absolutely has a sweet fang and loves to bake red velvet heart shaped cake pops
- her and Clawd are still together and every noon they cuddle together in the dorms while watching movies and eating sweets
- I picture that the profession Draculaura would like to have (in which I also hc she'd love to have multiple jobs, beware Barbie she'll steal your place) being: fashionista, vampiric history teacher, necromancy teacher in MH, baker, photographer working probably with Elissabat for promos in her movies or even as far as working as a Japanese idol
- DEFINITELY has a garden that is just hers in her father's manor and Dracula makes sure it's perfectly taken care of so when she comes back Draculaura isn't too worried for the plants, her favorite flower being black roses and sakura flowers in their pink shade
- definitely in her time in the vampiric court Draculaura would sneak away with Valentine and Elissabat and just explore the town at night instead of focusing on the balls, though she'd come right on time for the dance and would always call either Elissabat or Valentine as dance partners
- THE NIECE OF THE VAMPIRE FROM SESAME STREET AND COUNT CHOCULA.
- girly loves to read and collect shoujo manga and extra cutesy slice of life manga.
- once dressed Frankie up in gothic lolita, it became their hobby to once a weekend get all girls together and dress up in lolita for photos
- learnt about her taiwanese heritage a bit later and took some late blooming to enjoy it, these days she constantly enjoys being connected to taiwanese culture
- as someone deficient of GH (growth hormone and also linked to some teen hormones such as what causes periods and boob growth) I like to imagine Draculaura actually has the same thing and that's what caused her to be a late bloomer on both psychically and in her vampire side, which was what got her interested into witchcraft.
- besties with Spelldon I don't make the rules
- auntie of Valentine's and Spelldon kids as well as the aunt of any of her best ghouls friends
Side note: I never read her diary since as a kid I didn't have basic Draculaura but her variations so I'm sorry if some info is incorrect due to diary content, also I only want to read her diary when I have my own g1 basic Draculaura
Also: @strawberry-spectre some of these are for u and inspired from your blog!!
Same for @mugcakey

The Girly Guide to dressing like a Doll
Hello dolls!!! I’ve been neglecting this blog so bad recently but it totally isn’t on purpose. I’m in like my last month of school so everything has been going by really fast and I just haven’t had the time to write. I like to think of it as a good thing because now I have a whole bunch of ideas and drafts for the future ^_^. Today's post is about how to dress like a doll. It's not really gonna be very specific on how to dress a certain way but instead give you an idea on how to use cute doll-like elements in your wardrobe to help you achieve that cute dolly look. I’m going to include some pictures of what I'm going to talk about to help get a better picture of the concept as a whole. I post on my tiktok a lot and always get comments about my style and how I just put together my outfits in general. So here's a way to start dressing like the you really want to be.
1. Know what colors you like and what colors you don’t like.
I know it sounds simple but it can be quite complicated if you only wear one color. Personally I stick to 3 or 4 colors I know I will always look good in: pink, purple, white, and black. These are my signature colors that make up most of my wardrobe. If you can pick a few colors you know you will wear that will make it easier when you’re actually trying to find clothes you like.
2. Don’t limit yourself to one style/aesthetic
I had this mindset at first that I would only stick to one style for the rest of my life and would never change it ever. That works well for some people but not me. There are so many styles and fashion elements to try out and just sticking to one is kind of limiting in my opinion. Of course it's fine if you want to stick to one style or aesthetic but before deciding on one i highly suggest trying out different ones.
3. Have staple pieces in your wardrobe.
Sure statement pieces are beautiful and amazing to have but staple pieces are just as if not more important. I suggest having 2 or 3 regular t-shirts in the colors you like, 2 pairs of jeans/pants, 1 or 2 skirts, and a dress. These pieces are more than enough in the realm of simple and fabulous especially if you accessories them the right way. Plus you can easily mix and match them with statement pieces.
4. Shoes, shoes, SHOES!!!
At first I didn't understand the importance of shoes but god do I now. I love shoe shopping. When I first started my deep dive into fashion I focused on the clothes instead of the shoes and that was kind of a mistake lol. Shoes can elevate any outfit from a 5 to a 10. I like to have a pair of white and black shoes in my wardrobe at all times. Also as I got older I started to add heels and platforms into the mix because a casual look can also be super cute with a great pair of heels or platforms. Starting out I suggest a pair a black and white sneakers and if you like heels and pair of black heels
5. Have an inspo for how you want to look like
I know above I said don’t limit yourself but sometimes having an inspo or guide for the look you’re going for is really helpful. I personally have so many (i’ll include a few). This by no means mean copy a persona to the t but take aspects of their style and incorporate them into yours to help it develop into a style you like. Personally my inspo is monster high, alternative fashion, video vixens from the early 2000s, a lot of megan fox characters (jennifer check, carla santini, mikeala baens), vampires, elle woods, barbie, london tipton, sharpay evans, harajuku fashion, girly anime/video characters, 2000s horror movies, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Megan Good. As you can see it's a pretty good mix or like preppy pink and alt fashion and there is nothing wrong with mixing them together.
6. ACCESSORIZE!
God do I love accessorizing, it is my second favorite part about getting dressed (other than doing my makeup). The first thing I think you should do is pick which metals you like, by this i mean gold or silver. I personally love silver jewelry and only wear silvery. Due to this most of the jewelry I buy is silver, pink, and black. I also have quite the bag collection, mostly black and white (I just bought a new pink bag that I'm so excited about). I wouldn't say have one bag for every occasion but do have like 2 or 3, personally i love a little baguette or crossbody bag. Also invest in some sunglasses. They’re sups cute and protect your eyes from the sun.
7. Makeup can be a literal lifesaver
Makeup is literally my favorite thing ever. I love getting dressed up and doing my makeup. It's just so therapeutic to me. If I don't like the outfit that I'm wearing, I can just do my makeup and I'll feel so much better about it. I have a post on some of my makeup favorites as a starting point if you have no clue about makeup. I can also recommend some youtube videos if you guys want.
But most importantly have CONFIDENCE! Confidence is the key to looking and feeling amazing as long as you work to be the best version of yourself and stay true to yourself. That's all it really takes to be a doll. I plan on making more posts like this soon because I really enjoy sitting down and just writing helpful little posts like this. If you guys have any question pls don't hesitate to comment or message me i’ll always answer. Bye Bye lovelies!!!! XOXO Dolly

The start of a new school year has came back around yet again. You loved teaching the little minds of the children in your class each year, seeing their eyes light up when they got the hang of something or when they win a prize out of the treasure box. First graders were always so excited and full of questions.
You spent the whole week preparing and planning for a fun first day for your students, name cards on desks along with a little goodie bag. You decorated your classroom in fun colors with a variety of educational materials and items hanging on the wall within the children’s reach. You had came up with all kinds of fun games for the kids to play and help them learn in the process. There was a toy chest filled with numbered blocks for learning math, books to help them read, and other useful tools to prepare them for the future.
You stood out in the hallway beside your classroom door as the bell rang and students began flooding the halls in search of their classroom. You smiled brightly as you welcomed each student that entered your room and helped the children that couldn’t find their teacher.
Inside the classroom, you welcomed them as whole and introduced yourself. You went down each row asking them to introduce themselves to the class and tell everyone one thing they loved. The answers ranged from dinosaurs to Barbie to trucks to seashells. One little girl’s answer just melted your heart. When asked about what she loved, she beamed and answered with, “My daddy.”
As the day went on, you kept thinking about how sweet that one little girl’s answer was. My daddy. You looked at the rows of desks and your eyes landed on the sweet little girl. She had gorgeous brown hair that cascaded around her shoulders, adorable chocolate brown eyes that had such liveliness in them. She was dressed in a purple shirt with a yellow butterfly printed on the front and blue jeans paired with a cute pair of purple and white Jordans. You watched how all the children interacted with one another and noticed she was always helping others and partnering up with the one or two kids that seemed to be left out.
At lunch time, you guided your class to the cafeteria. Some children had brought their lunch so you led them to the table designated for your students. You sat down at the same table with your lunchbox, smiling and chatting with the students already there. You opted to make yourself a classic PB&J. Just because you’re a teacher doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a kid like lunch.
A plastic cafeteria tray was sat on the table next to you. You looked up from your lunchbox to see the sweet little brown haired and brown eyed girl, Madeleine Jackson was her name but she liked Maddie better. “Hi!” You smiled as the little girl sat down.
“Hi Miss Y/L/N!” She cheerfully greeted you. She gave you the cutest smile and started up a conversation about how your day was going, your favorite color, favorite food and really just whatever she thought of. You would answer her questions and ask her some in return. You could tell she was thrilled to talking with you and honestly, you were happy she was interested in getting to know you.
After lunch, you led your students back to the classroom and started teaching a math lesson. All the children learned at different speeds which is to be expected. You explained the math lesson once more and gave a few examples on the whiteboard and with the blocks from the toy chest. When you felt like they had a pretty good grasp on it, you passed out a work sheet and blocks for visual aids.
You sat at your desk and went over the worksheets from the spelling activity when you heard a little voice from the front of your desk. “Can you help me more?” You looked up and your eyes met the sweet little Jackson girl. She looked like she was getting upset.
“Don’t don’t get upset, Maddie. Can you bring me some blocks? Maybe you need to think about it in a different way.” You offered and watched Maddie collect the blocks. When she returned, you helped her until she finally got the hang of it. “Great job Maddie!” She beamed at your praise, clearly thrilled she figured it out.
“I can’t wait to show daddy.” She grinned. You could tell by the way she talked about her dad that he meant the world to her, a total daddy’s girl. Once Maddie went back to her desk, you resumed going over the spelling worksheets from earlier.
As the first day drew to a close, you helped your students collect their things and put away anything they were using. Once that was done, the bell rang signaling that school was finally over for the day. You helped direct your students to the buses and to the car rider line. You joined the other teachers in standing alongside the students from your class and others, asking them if they see their car and when they did you walked them to their car. As the number of students dwindled down to the final few, you noticed one of your students was left, sweet little Maddie Jackson. You made your way over to her and crouched down. “Do you want to sit over on the bench and talk to me while we wait?” You offered to which she happily agreed.
The pair of you chatted about Disney movies and your favorite princesses until a car stopped in front of you. Looking up the little Jackson girl’s face lit up as she squealed, “Daddy!” She jumped down and raced towards him as he exited the car, smiling wide as he scooped her up in hug.
You couldn’t help yourself from smiling at the sweet scene in front of you. The little girl’s dad was absolutely gorgeous, from his long brown hair to his gorgeous chocolate brown eyes and his contagious smile. Looking between the two, there was no mistaking them as father and daughter, she was the miniature version of him.
“Daddy! Daddy! You have to meet my teacher!” Maddie insisted, tugging on her dad’s hand once he sat her back down from the hug. He just shook his head laughing, letting her drag him over to you on the bench.
“Daddy, this is Miss Y/L/N. She’s the best teacher ever!” Maddie excitedly informed her dad. You were happy and surprised at Maddie’s statement. You always wanted to make an impression on your students, but you never realized it could be done that quickly.
Maddie’s dad chuckled at his daughter’s enthusiasm. “I’m Matt.” He introduced himself, a beautiful smile on his face. He reached out to shake your hand.
You instantly returned the smile. “Y/N.” You accepted his handshake. As you did so, you felt a sort of connection, an electric connection, a spark shooting through you. Did he feel the same?

Couples Costume Contest- who do you think wore it best?
Propaganda-
P&E: Look at them!!! It's NOT from the Barbie movie (though Payton does love it) because Ezra is better than that version of Ken.
S&N: We all get to decide who's idea it was to gender bend the costume. While you might want to say Sakura at first, part of me KNOWS that Nishan would die to dress as Prince(ss) Leia
J&A: No matter how much he denies having wanted to dress up, we all know it was Julian's idea. Any excuse for them to be adorable (and for him to show mountains of affection to his girlfriend)
M&K: They're dressed up as the original lesbians. Pretty sure Katherine already had all of the elements to her part of the costume in her closet.
C&W: That's just his normal red hoodie. I feel like of all of the sitcom love interests in the world, Wes would have a special appreciation for Nick Miller. Both of them have learned to take care of themselves first and slowly learn to come out of their loner mindset.

Hi sporks! This is kiiinda a weird ask but do you have any ideas/resources for beginners learning to sew?
I know you've been at it for awhile, and idk where else to look lol
Oooo, okay, so I have Resources for Free Patterns
CholyKnight has a bunch of free patterns, and they're also rated by difficulty, so you can find ones that work for your skill level. There's also some explanations of how to do sewing stuff like darts and whatnot. Definitely great for beginners.
Mood Sewcity, more free patterns
Free Sewing, Patterns, these you can adjust with your measurements
Fleece Fun, these are relatively simple. It's where I got my cloak pattern. You do have to sign up for emails, but lots of patterns for free, and fleece is relatively inexpensive. Fleece is pretty good for starters, too, because it's a relatively strong fabric that doesn't fray but isn't too thick to sew through
As far as actual resources for learning, I don't really have much because I was taught to sew by my older sister and my mom, and I figured most other stuff out on my own. So I made some short things of basic stitching stuff
This one is called a running stitch. It's the first one I learned, and is really easy. Just back and forth through the fabric. I made the stitches pretty big here and in opposite colors from the cloth for visual reasons, but you want to pick thread closer to your cloth color, and the smaller your stitches are, the stronger they'll be. There is an exception to this, it's called "basting" and it's basically doing the running stitch but really big and loose. It's supposed to be temporary and just holds pieces in place until you do something else
This is just a way to anchor your running stitch with a knot. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do this, but I'm paranoid about my stitches coming out, and when you're doing it by hand as a beginner, they probably WILL come out, so. Yeah.
This one's called a "whip stitch" (I learned recently. I've been doing it for ages, didn't know the name). You're basically popping the edges together and sewing in little circles around them.
This one is a ladder stitch/slip stitch/invisible stitch, and I'm doing it kind of messily here, but the objective is to make your stitch invisible when you pull it tight. You're sort of sewing on the "inside" of the fabric, folding it over and making the thread go behind the fold so it's hidden, then pulling it over to the other side. I use this one to close up my plushies mostly.
Other Random Tips and Stuff:
A "seam allowance" is how much extra cloth you can put on the other side of the seam
You don't need a special cutting board/table for your fabric, I literally just use the floor or the kitchen table
Tacky glue is great for tiny pieces you don't want to sew, like eye shines. It does take some time to dry, though. I put books on top of the fabric to press it together. It will wash out, though, so don't use it on things you intend to throw in the wash
Get pretty good at hand sewing before you try messing with a sewing machine
Fabric scissors really do make a difference in cutting from regular scissors
If you look up "free fabric samples" a lot of cloth places will send you a few little squares of fabric. These are great for practicing and also figuring out different materials, and you don't have to pay for them
Felt is also pretty inexpensive and you can get it at most craft stores, even if they don't sell fabric by the yard. It's also good for details on plushies, like eyes. It is scratchy, though.
Pins are very helpful, but watch out because they will stab you
Little details and things are usually easier to sew by hand rather than machine, especially if there's curves on it. It's just not worth the hassle.
If you're making a plushie, pull the stuffing apart before you stuff it, or the stuffing isn't as soft/it clumps up.
Don't start with a huge major sewing clothes project. My first sewing stuff was making dresses for my barbies when I was 10 and they were literally just tubes with straps on them. I was pleased with this. Trying a big project first will probably just be frustrating, so get used to basic sewing stuff first.
Yeah, I think that's most of it! Let me know if you have any other questions or let me know what you end up making! Other sewing people feel free to add on
#sorry that the ladder stitch one is so fast. it wouldn't let me save as a gif unless it was short.#asks#sewing

Amid a desert landscape a visionary unveils an invention that will forever change the world as we know it.
That’s the climactic scene of the Christopher Nolan biopic Oppenheimer, about the eponymous J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb.” It’s also the opening scene of the Barbie movie, directed and co-written by indie auteur Greta Gerwig, which opened on the same day as Oppenheimer.
Despite the two films’ radically different subject matter and tone—one a dramatic examination of man’s hubris and the threat of nuclear apocalypse and the other a neon-drenched romp about Mattel’s iconic fashion doll—they have far more in common than just their release date. Both movies consider the complicated legacies of two American icons and how to grapple with and perhaps even atone for them.
In Oppenheimer, the desert scene depicts the Trinity test, the world’s first detonation of a nuclear bomb near Los Alamos, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. A brilliant but flawed theoretical physicist and the rest of his team work frantically to develop the weapon for the United States before the Nazis can beat them to the punch; they then gather on bleak, lunar-white sands near their secret laboratory to test the terrifying creation.
The countdown timer ticks to 00:00:00, the proverbial big red button is pushed, and a blast ignites the sky—a blinding white flash that quickly morphs into a towering inferno. Everything goes silent as Oppenheimer stares in awe from behind a makeshift protective barrier at what he has created.
Suddenly, he begins experiencing flashes of a different kind, premonitions of the human horror and suffering his weapon will wreak. Nolan is unambiguously signaling to the audience that this is a pivotal moment for the world, and for Oppenheimer personally, as what was once merely a theoretical idea has become monstrously real. The fallout, both literally and figuratively, will be out of Oppenheimer’s control.
Barbie’s critical desert scene comes not at the film’s climax but at its very beginning. The movie opens with a parody of the famous “The Dawn of Man” scene from Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1968 science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As a red-orange sunrise breaks across a rocky desert landscape, a voiceover (from none other than Dame Helen Mirren) begins: “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls.” On screen, underscored by the ominous notes of Richard Strauss’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” little girls sit amid dusty canyon walls playing with baby dolls.
“Until…” Mirren says. And then comes the reveal: The little girls look up to see a massive, monolith-sized Margot Robbie, dressed in the black and white-striped swimsuit of the very first Barbie doll. She lifts her sunglasses and winks. The little girls are stunned—and, like the apes in the classic sci-fi movie, they begin to angrily dash their baby dolls against the ground.
This is Barbie’s mythic origin story: Once upon a time, little girls could only play with baby dolls meant to socialize them into wanting to be good wives and, eventually, mothers. Then came Ruth Handler, who in 1959 decided to create a doll with an adult woman’s body, adult women’s fashions, and adult women’s careers so that little girls could dream of being more than just wives and mothers. And the rest is history. Thanks to such iterations as doctor Barbie, chef Barbie, scientist Barbie, professional violinist Barbie, and beyond, Barbie opened up young girls to a world of possibilities and, Mirren says, “All problems of feminism and equal rights [were] solved.”
Well, not so fast: Mirren adds one final, snarky beat: “At least,” she says, “that’s what the Barbies think.”
Thus Gerwig introduces the central tension that animates the movie: Handler set out to create a feminist toy to empower and inspire young girls. But we sitting in the audience in 2023 know that things worked out a little differently. In the intervening years, Barbie would come under fire from feminists and other critics for a whole host of sins: encouraging unrealistic and harmful beauty standards that contribute to negative body image issues, eating disorders, and depression among pre-adolescent girls; lacking diversity and perpetuating white supremacy, ableism, and heteronormativity; objectifying women; promoting consumerism and capitalism; and even contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
And here is the core parallel between Barbie and Oppenheimer: Two iconic American creators who ostensibly meant well but whose creations caused irreparable harm. And two iconic American directors (Nolan is British-American) who set out to tell their stories from a very modern perspective, humanizing them while also addressing their harmful legacies.
But while Nolan obviously had the much harder task—no matter how much harm you think Barbie has done to the psyches of young girls over the years, there’s simply no comparison to the human toll of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the environmental impact of decades of nuclear testing, or the cost of the nuclear arms race—oddly enough, it’s Gerwig who ends up taking her job of atonement far more seriously.
As its opening scene shows, the Barbie movie lets the audience know right from the start that it’s self-aware. It knows that Barbie is problematic. And it’s going to go there.
And it does—almost to the point of overkill. The basic plot of the movie is this: Barbie is living happily in Barbie Land, a perfect pink plastic world where she and her fellow Barbies run everything from the White House to the Supreme Court and have everything they could ever want, from dream houses to dream cars to dreamy boyfriends (Ken)—the last of which they treat as little more than accessories.
But suddenly, things start to go wrong in Barbie’s happy feminist utopia, and to fix it, she is forced to journey into the real world—our world—accompanied by Ken, who insists on going with her. When she does, she realizes that contrary to what she believed (as Mirren told us in the opening scene), the invention of Barbies didn’t solve gender inequality in the real world. In the real world, Barbie is confronted not only with the dominance of the patriarchy (she discovers, for instance, that Mattel’s CEO is a man, played by Will Ferrell), but also with the fact that young girls seem to hate her.
In a crucial early scene, Robbie’s Barbie encounters ultracool Gen-Z teen Sasha (played by Ariana Greenblatt), who delivers a scathing monologue about everything that’s wrong with Barbie, the doll and cultural symbol—basically a checklist of all the criticisms lobbed at Barbie over the years, from promoting unrealistic beauty standards to destroying the planet with rampant capitalism. Barbie is crestfallen.
Meanwhile, there’s a subplot involving Ken’s parallel discovery of patriarchy, and how awesome and different it seems to be from his subjugated life in Barbie Land. Ken proceeds to go full men’s rights, heading back to Barbie Land and seizing power. He transforms Barbie’s dream house into Ken’s Mojo Dojo Casa House, where Barbies serve men and “every night is boys’ night!”
Barbie enlists the help of Sasha and her mom (played by America Ferrera)—a Mattel employee who secretly dreams up ideas for new, more realistic Barbies such as anxiety Barbie—to unseat Ken and restore female power in Barbie Land. Along the way, Ferrera’s character delivers the film’s other major feminist monologue, about how hard it is being a woman in the real world.
The monologues are unsubtle, as are the repeated mentions of concepts like the patriarchy. In every scene and nearly every line, the movie hits the audience over the head with the pro-feminism message. Gerwig knows what her job is—to atone for Barbie’s sins (and, yes, help Mattel sell more dolls)—and she makes sure everyone knows that she has fully understood the assignment.
But it’s in the film’s quieter, more tender moments that Gerwig’s background as an indie filmmaker and her true talent shine through, and where she’s able to communicate the message in a subtler, but ultimately more impactful, way. The scene where Barbie in the real world sees an elderly woman for the first time (old people and wrinkles don’t exist in Barbie Land, obviously) and is stunned at how beautiful she is, wrinkles and all. Or the scenes where Barbie talks quietly with her deceased creator, an elderly Handler (played by Rhea Perlman), who explains that the name Barbie was an homage to Handler’s daughter, Barbara, who inspired her to make the doll.
The overall result is a movie that, even if a bit ham-fisted in its over-the-top messaging, doesn’t shy away from the uglier parts of Barbie’s legacy. It looks them right in the face, wrinkles and all.
I said above that the Trinity test scene is the climactic scene in Oppenheimer, but that’s not really the case. For a movie about the complicated life and legacy of the man credited with creating the world’s most destructive weapon, it should be the climax. You might imagine it would follow with a denouement of the inventor confronting the reality that his creation is used to kill tens of thousands of Japanese civilians and sparks an arms race that threatens to destroy all of humanity.
These scenes are in there, but they are given short shrift next to the other story Nolan wants to tell: that of how Oppenheimer, once considered an American hero, was mistreated by his country in the postwar years. As McCarthy-era fears of communist infiltration grip the country, Oppenheimer’s previous ties to the Communist Party (he never joined the party himself, but he had close family members and friends who were members, and he supported various left-wing causes) are mysteriously brought to the FBI’s attention despite already being well documented. His security clearance is revoked, and his career working with the U.S. government on nuclear issues ends.
It is this storyline—not the apocalyptic destruction of two Japanese cities—that is given the most pathos. Much of the movie’s three-hour run time—and nearly all of its third act—centers on what we are clearly meant to see as the great evil that was done to this man who did so much for his country. The real climax of the film is not the Trinity test, nor even the bombings of Japan (which are not even shown in the movie), but rather the moment we learn who betrayed Oppenheimer by handing over his security file to the FBI.
This is the shocking revelation that is meant to induce gasps in the audience, not the images of charred and irradiated bodies. In fact, those images aren’t even shown to us, the viewers. In the scene where Oppenheimer and his team are shown photos of the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the camera stays tight on Oppenheimer’s face as he reacts to the images—a reaction that consists of him putting his head down to avoid seeing them.
It is an act of cowardice on Oppenheimer’s part, yes, but also on Nolan’s. Indeed, the only glimpses we get of the macabre effects of the atom bomb take place in Oppenheimer’s fevered imagination, and even then, they are brief flashes used for shock value: skin flapping off the beautiful face of an admiring female colleague; the charred, faceless husk of a child’s body Oppenheimer accidentally steps on; a male colleague vomiting from the effects of radiation. Of the Japanese victims, there is nothing. They remain theoretical, faceless.
Nolan has said that he chose not to depict the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki not to sanitize them but because the film’s events are shown from Oppenheimer’s point of view. “We know so much more than he did at the time,” Nolan said at a screening of the movie in New York. “He learned about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the radio, the same as the rest of the world.”
But in reading the numerous interviews he’s given about the movie, it’s also clear that Nolan fundamentally sees Oppenheimer as a tragic hero—Nolan has repeatedly called Oppenheimer “the most important person who ever lived”—and Oppenheimer’s story as a distinctly American one. “I believe you see in the Oppenheimer story all that is great and all that is terrible about America’s uniquely modern power in the world,” he told the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. “It’s a very, very American story.”
That Nolan’s film devotes so much runtime to Oppenheimer’s point of view and how he was tragically betrayed by his country is partly due to the fact that the film is not an original story but rather an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of the great scientist, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. That book also places Oppenheimer being stripped of his security clearance at its center. But that didn’t mean Nolan had to do the same in his adaptation. That was a choice. And the end result is what military technology writer Kelsey Atherton aptly described as “a 3 hour long argument that the greatest victim of atomic weaponry was Oppenheimer’s clearance.”
At a time when Americans are struggling to reckon with their country’s past and how it has shaped the present—from fights over how (or even whether) to teach children about the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow; to debates, including in these very pages, over the role (or lack thereof) of NATO expansion in Russia’s decision to wage war on Ukraine; to retrospectives on the myriad failures of the U.S. war in Afghanistan; and beyond—the fact that the two biggest films in theaters right now are attempting to confront the legacies of two American icons, the nuclear bomb and Barbie, is understandable and perhaps even impressive.
But the impulse to look away from the ugliest parts of those legacies remains strong, and Oppenheimer never fully faces them.

Still thinking about Barbie, the movie, and Barbies, collectively, and the very particular quirk of my childhood experience with the doll.
Here's the thing: I grew up in the '80s. (Yes, I'm old, hush.) I had several Barbies, and you'd probably recognize a few of them. Peaches & Cream Barbie even made it into the opening sequence of the movie, after all. That one was, justifiably, a classic.
But my favorite Barbies as a kid looked like this.
Yes, that's an officially licensed Barbie doll, made by the Takara company for sale in Japan. For several years there, from the early '80s to 1986, Japanese Barbies looked like they'd walked straight out of an anime, big, cartoony eyes and all. They came dressed in a variety of fashions, of course, just like their American counterparts, but it's hard not to highlight the traditional kimono. A friend of mine's dad did regular business trips to Japan, and he'd bring home dolls for her, so I got to play with her Barbies during visits to her house, and I always thought they were so much cooler than mine.
Years later, after the advent of the internet and, crucially, eBay, I decided to do some research and see if I could finally snag one of these dolls for myself. To my disappointment, I discovered that Takara no longer held the Barbie license, and the company that produced Japanese Barbies thereafter made the dolls look just like ours.*
*eta: Addendum here: Bandai had the license for a few years after Takara did, and their Barbies looked a lot like Takara's, although not exactly. The last thing I found said those were made until 1989. Correct me if I'm wrong about what happened after!
Returning to the main point, though--
But then I also found out what Takara had decided to do.
They'd lost the Barbie license, specifically. Mattel didn't have any ownership over Takara's doll design, since, after all, she didn't look like Barbie. There wasn't anything preventing Takara from producing the same dolls under a different name.
So this happened.
Meet the Takara Jenny. Same look, new name, new slogan ("Jenny is another yourself"). And without the restrictions of conforming to someone else's license, Takara had the license to do what the hell ever. Traditional dresses? Frothy, elaborate Lolita designs? Friend dolls modeled after famous J-pop singers? Why the heck not?
Takara did feel compelled to come up with an explanation for the name change, I note, beyond "Mattel won't let us call her Barbie anymore." The excuse they eventually went with still amuses me. I'll just quote Wikipedia for brevity:
Prior to 1986, the doll was known as Takara Barbie. In 1986 Takara ended their licensing agreement with Mattel, and, as they owned the rights over the Takara Barbie's design, came up with a new name for the doll. The explanation given for the name change was that Jenny was the name of a character Barbie portrayed in a play, also titled Jenny. The play was a success and Barbie had become so associated with her character's name that she decided to change it to Jenny. Jenny's boyfriend was renamed from "Takara Ken" to "Jeff."
Alas, alack, no more Kenergy for Jeff. Ah well.
(Seriously, though: Imagine that your girlfriend gets so carried away with a famous role she played that not only does she change her name, you have to, too. Poor Ken!)
Anyway: Takara Jenny's had a longer run than the Takara Barbie (interrupted during a discontinuation, but I hear she's back in 2023!), although of course Barbie still reigns supreme in the fashion doll world, and even in Takara's stable, their original fashion doll, Licca, was always more popular. But I've got a soft spot for the Jenny. After all, I'm a Jenny, too. And I still think the doll design is cute as hell.
Now, for an anime movie where Stereotypical Jenny looks like this...
Edit: Okay, I have to add this video. New Licca and friends, including Jenny!

I’m not really a doll blog but I finished my painted dolls a couple weeks ago and I think I’m going to do a little photoshoot with them soon! They make me so happy :D
Below the cut are them all laid out for basic pictures, I’ll probably do the more ‘for show’ pictures later this week. The spot where I want to place them doesn’t have good lighting and it’s too dark now and I’ll be away for the next couple days.
All of them together, plus a few small animal toys :)
Order of the smaller dolls (which is chronological from when their movies came out and in order of appearance) is as follows: Snow White, Cinderella, Alice, Wendy, Aurora, Eilonwy, Ariel (Jodi Benson), Belle, Jasmine, Olly the Octopus and Gabriella (attempt at human form) from the Little Mermaid tv show, Pocahontas/Matoaka, Esmeralda, Mulan, Melody (Little Mermaid II, attempted human form, see bottom of post for a context picture), Kida, Jane (Peter Pan II), Giselle, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Vanellope, Sofía, Amber (Sofía the First’s stepsister), Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf, Elena, Moana, Raya, Namaari, Sisu, Mirabel, Dolores, Isabela, Luisa, Shuri, Ariel (Halle Bailey) and Asha!
Big dolls are Kit Kittredge in a Barbie dress, Big Raya and Big Ariel.
These guys are just The Little Mermaid crew together. Left to right it’s Big Ariel, Ariel (Halle Bailey), Jariel (Jodi Benson), Melody, Olly and Gabriella. Here is a picture of Gabriella in case you didn’t recognize her. She wasn’t a huge character but she’s a favorite of mine, and has an interesting creation backstory.
Below are close ups of the painted girls, in alphabetical order
Alice, Ariel (Halle Bailey), Asha, Dolores, Eilonwy
Alice is an Elsa head (Young Elsa, Yelsa, in Blue dress with hair flattened to be not a braid) with Belle’s blue dress. Ariel was a Moana doll. Asha is a Moana doll with an Elsa body (final white outfit from Frozen II, Welsa) and a bag made of hot glue on the side. Dolores is a Kristoff head (for the ears) with a Tiana bun (see Tiana) and Belle’s yellow dress, with hot glue used to make her bow. And Eilonwy is a Kristoff head (luck of the draw) with hair added via hot glue strips and an Anna dress (green Queen dress from Frozen II, Granna).
Esmeralda, Olly and Gabriella (since he is her sign language interpreter, he stays with her :D)
Esmeralda was an Ariel doll with her ribbon made from hot glue. Olly is play dough, hot glue, paint and a spray on gloss. Gabriella was a Snow White doll. I decided to give her a human body because I already had human bodies. She doesn’t have silver in her original outfit but I added it because I thought it looked nice. The other colors should match.
Giselle, Isabela, Jane, Kida, Luisa
Giselle has an Anna head (Anna in her purple overcoat outfit from Frozen II, Panna) with an Aurora body. Isabela has a Welsa head with a Rapunzel body, and a nose arch added via hot glue. Jane is a Granna head with a Panna body. Kida is an Aurora head with a Moana body - the belt in the middle is made of hot glue. Luisa was a Cinderella doll but I added triceps (?) via hot glue.
Melody, Mirabel, Raya, Shuri
The original Disney Princess dolls who had pants (Jasmine and Kristoff, arguably Pocahontas) were either rarer (J&P) or came with less desirable heads (K) so Melody did not get real pants. Instead, she was a Cinderella head and a Tiana body with her pants painted onto the dress’s skirt. Mirabel was a Belle doll (I cut off the midsection of her hair and attached the ends to the top, making it look curly) with glasses painted on. Namaari was a Jasmine doll with a belt and earring added via hot glue (had to cut a lot of her hair off. And Shuri was a Tiana head (See Tiana) and a Kristoff body. She’s probably my favorite to have worked on. You can’t really see it in this picture, but if you look at the picture with everyone, she has a purple heart (for the heart shaped herb) in one hand and is holding a blue bracelet (like the one Namor gave her, made from his magic vibranium plant) in the other.
Sisu, Sofia, Tiana, Vanellope & Wendy
Sisu has a Rapunzel head and a Kristoff body. Sofia was a Belle doll. Tiana - see the below paragraph. Vanellope was an Anna head (the blue dress when she met Hans, Banna) with a Yelsa dress, the ponytail being made of hot glue. And Wendy was a Belle (from the Blue outfit) head and a Banna dress.
So there were occasional discrepancies with the official Disney Princess dolls (too much glitter, crowns when they never head crowns, often painted pink on spots where they never had pink) but for some reason they made Tiana wrong and gave her two buns! One on each since of her head. It was cute, but too inaccurate for me!
So I cut both off of my original Tiana, repasted one right behind her crown, and the other on Dolores’s head. And then when I decided to do Shuri (very last minute decision) i just cut off her buns and pasted them one behind the other in the middle of her head, to mirror the below hairstyle better. The curl was part of the face and looked cute so I kept it on both Tiana heads.
(Additionally I accidentally rubbed an eye off of Tiana’s face so the scullers is slightly repainted)
So those are my dolls! If you look through my blog you’ll probably find some progress pictures. I actually took Asha and Kida with me to see Wish, because I was finished with them by then :).

Barbenheimer: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Moviegoing Again
When I first heard that Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer were being released on the same day - July 21, 2023 - I didn't think much of it. After all, wildly disparate movies have been released on the same date before, and in an era before MCU/Disney dominated theaters, cineplexes had a variety of films that catered to many different audiences. The smash superhero sequel The Dark Knight and the ABBA-inspired musical comedy Mamma Mia! were both released on July 18, 2008, but social media was much less of a thing back then. (I've never seen Mamma Mia!, but my Dad and I did see TDK opening weekend.) Honestly? Initially, I didn't think people were really going to see both films on the same day, I thought people were joking. Boy was I wrong.
On their own, both films would have been hits with built-in audiences (love him or hate him, Nolan sure has dedicated fans). But by July 2023, the hype around the Barbenheimer phenomenon had gone nuclear. There were memes, T-shirts, and people bought tickets to see both movies in theaters on the same day, or at least the same weekend. The two have little in common, besides being high-profile studio films starring non-American actors as very American subjects, but that didn't matter.
On opening weekend, my friend and I saw a 70mm print of Oppenheimer on Saturday and a sold-out screening of Barbie on Sunday at the Village East theater in Manhattan, with a day break in-between. We had initially only planned to see the former, but even I was swept up by Barbie mania (I also enjoyed Gerwig's two previous films). There was an energy at the movie theater that I had not felt in a very long time outside of repertory cinema - people were genuinely excited to be there. When I was in line for the bathroom, a woman in front of me joked that you could tell who was there to see which movie. Lots of people in pink, Barbies and Kens abound, and even a few men (and one woman) dressed like J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. I did not dress up and I don't care much for the color pink, but it was still fun! It was a record-breaking box office weekend for both films - one a fantasy comedy about the world's most famous doll, the other a 3-hour doomy historical drama showing in premium large formats including IMAX. After a decade and a half of Marvel fare dominating theaters, this was a game-changer. Were superhero movies in their early '90s hair metal era?
I worked at a few movie theaters in suburban New Jersey in the 2000s, and this felt like a return to an era when word of mouth reigned supreme and people got dressed up for midnight screenings (people did this at a screening for one of the Harry Potter films, no lie). The hype also reminded me a bit of Titanic, which dominated the box office in 1997-98 when I was in 8th grade and everyone talked about it (weirdly enough, I did not see it until it was in a second run theater for some reason). But three years after the beginning of the pandemic, I was ready to go back to the movies - one of my favorite pastimes. I had seen a few films in theaters since 2022, once I was fully vaccinated and boosted, but this felt like a new beginning.
I enjoyed both movies and have now seen them twice (including an IMAX 70mm screening of Oppenheimer - if you have the opportunity to see it in this format, do it!). Barbie is charming and fun, with eye-popping production design and costumes and nods to directors like Jacques Demy. Margot Robbie (bringing humanity to a plastic doll) and Ryan Gosling are fantastic, and the film is a genuine crowd-pleaser. Oppenheimer is an intense, well-crafted drama with a few jaw-dropping sequences and a great, controlled performance by Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and a stacked cast. The editing by Jennifer Lame is phenomenal, and this might be the best work of Nolan's career. To date, Barbie has crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide, and Oppenheimer has made over $500 million globally - a huge deal for an R-rated talky period piece. Is this the beginning of better, more diverse movies in multiplexes across the world? Or just a weird fluke? Possibly the latter, but we'll see.
That said, the films aren't for everyone. I know people who have seen Barbie but have no interest in Oppenheimer, and that's okay! And if you don't care about either, I would recommend the documentary The Day After Trinity followed by Todd Haynes' Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story as an alternative, at-home Barbenheimer. It's just nice to see people excited about going to the movies again.

'A year ago, the idea of moviegoers dressing up in suits and wide-brimmed hats to see Christopher Nolan’s three-hour biopic about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer would’ve sounded absurd. One fateful scheduling matchup with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and (the disorienting state of meme economy) later, however, and suddenly Oppenheimer is this year’s #Gentleminions.
These are wackadoodle times, but the film’s costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, for one, is tickled.
“When Oppenheimer and Barbie collided in this magnificent starburst that only Oppenheimer could dream up, and then to see the cultural and financial result, was staggering,” says Mirojnick, who coincidentally was once attached to costume a previous iteration of the Barbie movie. When she visited a movie theater last month, she saw firsthand moviegoers across genders decked out in hot pink and Oppie ties. “Halloween will be quite the event this year,” she predicts. “I think Barbenheimer will have another go round for sure at the end of October.”
As far as Mirojnick is concerned, however, the fact that Oppenheimer is as stylish as it is shouldn’t be terribly surprising. Oppenheimer, the man, took his clothes very seriously—his father, Julius, ran a textile importing firm in New York, and Oppie developed his good taste from an early age. His famous hat—which featured an unusual porkpie top with a wide, cowboyish brim—was a hybrid of sorts, likely shaped by his love for New Mexico. So, too, was his Indigenous-designed turquoise-inset silver belt buckle, which the costume team had recreated based on an archival photograph. “He used to use that buckle to strike the match to light his pipe or his cigarette,” she says, “so it was quite cowboy-esque.” (If you’re in the market for a similar buckle–as many of my GQ colleagues now are—Mirojnick suggests bringing a photo of it to a silversmith in Santa Fe and having them custom-make it for you.)
Both items feature prominently in one movie ensemble that Mirojnick calls Oppenheimer’s “mythic look,” which appears midway through the film. As Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer takes the reins at the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, he dons a suit tailored from hardy workwear fabric, a sky blue shirt, and a stout brown tie. “When he walks out of that office, he is the sheriff, make no bones about it. He owns that town that he built.”
Thanks to archival photographs, the costume team didn’t have to imagine how Oppenheimer or his colleagues dressed—and menswear-minded viewers might clock that many of the physicists alongside Oppenheimer at the Berkeley lab and Los Alamos seem peculiarly stylish. (No small feat, given how many guys [gender neutral] are in Oppenheimer.) This, as fans have noted, is a Nolan signature: “[Nolan] is a man that you see every day in a sport jacket, a waistcoat, and a shirt, so he is a fan of that type of silhouette and structure,” Mirojnick says. “I think that has a very particular masculine approach to his men.”
But it’s also a signature of Mirojnick’s, who has outfitted countless powerful figures throughout her legendary career. (“I love seeing men in suits,” she says.) Her credits include Sharon Stone’s Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct and Michael Douglas’s Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, the latter of which remains one of the most influential suiting movies ever. The costume designer says she wasn’t consciously thinking of Gekko when it came to dressing Oppie—another archetypal American man who wielded tremendous and destructive power—but she sees stylistic parallels between them. “I’ll be bold to say [Oppenheimer] took the same course as Gordon into becoming a self-made man, trusting and being empowered by his brain and his intelligence,” she says. “He knew [how] he could present to elicit what he needed.”
In the film, Oppenheimer’s keen sense of style also helps establish his real-life reputation as a womanizer. His clothes, Mirojnick says, were “simply elegant, but in a hugely seductive way.” Casting Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer also didn’t hurt, of course, as far as conveying sex appeal is concerned: “He could put anything on and make it look like a million dollars,” says Mirojnick, who was delighted by the actor’s premiere outfits before the cast halted their promotional run in solidarity with the SAG strike. “I was surprised at the sheer Saint Laurent, to be honest, because I wouldn’t have thought that he likes to bring that much attention. He has a perfect je ne sais quoi about him.”
It's that same sort of ineffable quality that hits at the core of the Barbenheimer experience. “One day when we study [how this phenomenon happened], I’d be hugely fascinated by why it became what it became,” she says, adding: “The ones who really pull the strings, it would be very nice if they really paid attention to what we have been part of, what history has brought us right now.”'
