Never before has double speak been used more proficiently and successfully as now. We are constantly bombarded with language that conditions and programs us to adopt and accept whatever they want. It’s pretty much wizardry and they know how to use their language spells! 🤔

Wordplay: Using doublespeak to manipulate your readers!
Doublespeak distorts, like a cuttlefish squirting ink. It makes the bad seem good, the negative positive, the unpleasant attractive.
It frames reality in a different way than it really is. For example, reframing an act of war as a “defensive freedom” and a “necessary action to protect our way of life”.
Types of Doublespeak:
Euphemism: Using mild or vague terms to mask harshness or unpleasantness.
Example: Referring to tax increase as “revenue enhancement”, shellshock as “”operational exhaustion”.
Jargon: Using special(pretentious, obscure) language that confuse, and exclude those not familiar with the terms.
Example: “The machine has a baseplate of prefabricated amulite, surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing.”
Gobbledygook: Using complex, convoluted language to appear sophisticated and official.
Example: Instead of saying “We are cutting costs”, say “In alignment with our strategic operational objectives, we are initiating a paradigm shift in our financial allocation protocols to optimize resource utilization and enhance fiscal prudence across all departments.”
Inflated Language: Using grand words to make things appear more significant.
Example: Referring to a janitor as a “sanitation engineer”.
With doublespeak, deceptive language is normalized, politicians don’t lie but misspeak, illegal acts are inappropriate actions, and a fraud is a miscertification.
“If thought can corrupt language, then language can corrupt thought.” -George Orwell.
The above is my summary of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzsEp_hakK4
I like the concept of doublespeak, reframing, and tuning words to convey same-ish, yet different meanings.
Wordplay! Love it!

Something I just realized about Good Omens. One of the (MANY) reasons I love the story.
In the southern US, it's fairly common to hear things in double speak. We're moving away from this with younger generations, but it's still relatively common. Think about the phrase "bless your heart." On the surface, it's a positive statement. But it can be used in so many ways, many negatively.
My aunt once sent me a card which read :
"I had such a great time taking your kids to the ballgame the other day." Which meant "you're welcome even though you didn't send me a thank you note."
I replied with:
"yes, kids are wonderful and should be cherished and protected." Which meant "I have not forgotten the abuse of my childhood and I will never let you treat my kids that way. You should be grateful I let you take them to the game."
Now, how this pertains to Good Omens. The two main characters have been using double speak for literal millennia. BUT, they use it to show love. By Aziraphale's carefully worded phrases and Crowley's little actions. By Crowley's halting conversation because he can't face his feelings. They aren't really able to even acknowledge it themselves, and YET we can read between every line some integral inner meaning of "I love you", "I care about you", "you matter to me".
We, as a fandom, have done that in many many posts.
It's healing to see double entendre used for a positive light. It's absolutely beautiful and heartwarming. It makes me think perhaps there's hope.
As many have said, there's little difference between positive reinforcement and censure depending on context.
Words, as we have seen especially in this fandom, have power. Be careful how you use them.
Show love.

Antinomy (Nier: Automata End Song)
This song is in Japanese, but if you pretend he's speaking English it's a whole new song.
youtube
[Adam] Conjoin well, don't deny the courtesy, so that the other one can know the key thoughts arising in you.
[2B] Hit the road, bye son, and leave the courtesy. [9S] Aww, boohoo now, you're all sorry now the cool guy stole the show.
[Adam] And if she could dare, what are we? Can she deny he? Hasn't he a kind soul to gaze at all day? [2B] No! I can not! The kid's only an echo now, cuckoo. [9S] But come on, who"ll deny us, she and I, yo?!
[Adam] An emotion! There! Is she mostly there?! [2B] He can not be dead! He can not be dead! He can not surrender! Is he the guy I knew? [9S] Now, you lean on me until we until we conquer all the bad guys. [Commander White] We'll both see death if you go away, and your boy whom you'll meet soon up ahead, but you gotta check up and on and on, so they would end kinda cuckoo, not a diamond. [2B] Oh no, nooo…
[Operator 6O] Oh Lolita, you're too hot.

@vidavalor I guess we can take that as further confirmation of what they were really talking about when Aziraphale said he passed his driving test 🤭🤭🤭
Good Omens question: Does Aziraphale know how to drive?
I think that if Aziraphale actually wanted a car he was in to move it would, and it would go where he needed it to go at the speed he wanted it to go.
But if you’re asking whether he has any idea what a car key or a gear shift or any of the pedals are or do, or any interest in ever finding out, the answer is, I suspect, a very definite no.

In other news the governor is passing laws stating:
Up is Down
Wet is Dry
Black is White
and Evil is Good
DeSantis is the perfect candidate to be "Big Brother" in Orwell's 1984 with his excellent grasp of 'double speak.'

Double Standard Dictionary: A Guide to Things That Are Only "Problems" When Women Do Them
Let's have an honest conversation about something that drives me absolutely crazy. You know those little comments and judgments that somehow only seem to apply to women? Yeah, we need to talk about that.
The Professional Edition
When men vs. when women do the exact same thing:
He's assertive → She's aggressive
He's focused → She's cold
He's passionate → She's emotional
He's dedicated → She's obsessed
He's confident → She's arrogant
He's strategic → She's manipulative
He's busy → She's neglecting her life
The Dating Double Standards
The classics that never seem to die:
He's dated around → She has "a past"
He's a bachelor → She's "left on the shelf"
He's selective → She's picky
He's career-focused → She's married to her job
He's a social butterfly → She's attention-seeking
He's "finding himself" → She needs to settle down
He's direct → She's desperate
The Appearance Police
The endless contradictions:
Look professional, but not too try-hard
Be attractive, but not attention-seeking
Wear makeup, but keep it "natural"
Be fit, but not too muscular
Dress well, but not too sexy
Look youthful, but not immature
Age gracefully, but never look old
The Emotion Edition
How it's perceived:
His anger is justified → Her anger is hysteria
His sadness is deep → Her sadness is dramatic
His stress is from hard work → Her stress is from "not coping"
His excitement is enthusiasm → Her excitement is over-the-top
His concerns are valid → Her concerns are paranoid
His anxiety is pressure → Her anxiety is weakness
The Family Chronicles
The never-ending judgment:
He's babysitting → She's just parenting
He's helping around the house → She's doing her job
He's focused on work → She's neglecting family
He needs time to himself → She's selfish
He's weighing his options → She's wasting time
He's figuring out what he wants → Her clock is ticking
The Office Politics
Things I'm tired of seeing:
Men get mentored → Women get hit on
Men network → Women "sleep their way up"
Men are busy → Women "can't handle it"
Men are thorough → Women are perfectionists
Men delegate → Women are lazy
Men need work-life balance → Women are uncommitted
The Social Scene
The ridiculous expectations:
Be fun but not too wild
Be social but not too friendly
Be smart but not intimidating
Be successful but not threatening
Be independent but not difficult
Be strong but still need help
Be confident but still humble
The Success Paradox
What we're dealing with:
Be ambitious but not threatening
Lead but don't be bossy
Achieve but don't outshine
Negotiate but don't be demanding
Succeed but stay likeable
Excel but remain modest
Win but make it look effortless
The Reality Check
What this actually means for us:
Constant second-guessing
Walking on eggshells
Energy drain from overthinking
Imposter syndrome
Reduced authenticity
Limited self-expression
Unnecessary stress
The Way Forward
What we can do about it:
Call it out
Name the double standard
Question the logic
Point out the inconsistency
Support other women
2. Break the patterns
Reject unfair labels
Define success personally
Set our own standards
Celebrate authenticity
3. Change the narrative
Share success stories
Highlight achievements
Create new networks
Mentor others
To Every Woman Dealing With This
Remember:
You're not "too much"
Your achievements are earned
Your feelings are valid
Your ambitions are worthy
Your standards are important
Your voice matters
Your path is yours
