Upcoming Magical Girl Projects
Magical girl fans are finally eating good after years of starvation. So good, in fact, that I decided to make a list of magical girl projects in development. This is a continually updating list whose history can be found here.
Mahou Tsukai Precure: Mirai Days - A new installment in the Precure franchise, Mirai Days will serve as a sequel to Mahou Tsukai, the thirteenth season. Set a few months after the season's epilogue, Mirai Days has the Cures reunite in order to face a threat against time itself. Premiering January 11, 2025.
You and Idol Precure - The 22nd season of the Precure franchise, You and Idol will replace the currently airing Wonderful Precure on February 2, 2025. While walking her dog, Uta Sakura comes across Purirun, a fairy searching for the legendary Idol Precure to save her homeland from the Chokkiri Gang. Uta then transforms into Cure Idol to take back the "sparkle" of her neighbors after it's stolen by a Chokkiri agent.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Walpurgisnacht Rising - The fourth PMMM movie, which will pick up where Rebellion's massive cliffhanger left off. While originally slated for late 2024, it has since been delayed to winter 2025.
Cute High Earth Defense Club Eternal Love! - The magical boy series is getting a new movie in winter 2025 as part of the celebrations for its 10th anniversary. The movie will be a time travel story that picks up a decade after the original series.
Maebashi Witches - A TV original production by Sunrise, Maebashi Witches is a coming of age story focused on a quintet of high schoolers who are approached by a strange and mysterious frog named Keroppe, who recruits them to become the titular group. Now working in a magical flower shop, the girls use the "Witchverse" pocket dimension to grant people's wishes with the power of song and dance. Has the same writer as Bocchi the Rock (Erika Yoshida) and is premiering spring 2025.
Princession Orchestra - A TV original coming in spring 2025, Princession Orchestra is based on a concept by Akifumi Kaneko, one of Symphogear's co-creators. The land of Alicepia's peace is destroyed when monsters called Jammerwocks attack, prompting a trio of young girls to step up the plate to protect the realm.
Winx Club - The western magical girl classic is getting a CGI reboot. While comments by Iginio Straffi imply that certain characters who were introduced later in the original series (such as Roxy and Nabu) will appear earlier, no specific plot details have been revealed so far. The series is coming to Netflix late 2025.
New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - Panty & Stocking is getting a second season after over a decade that's coming out sometime in 2025. A teaser trailer confirmed the OG voice cast's return and announced the production staff, but plot details are still unclear.
Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. season two - Magilumiere is getting a second season, which was announced after the broadcast of season one's finale. No other details have been revealed.
Untitled Symphogear movie - A new Symphogear movie was announced in late 2023. However, no further details have been revealed.
Hua Xianzi: Zhi Mofa Xiang Dui Lun - A co-production between Tencent Video and Toei Animation's Shanghai branch, this anime is being billed as a "remake" of Lunlun the Flower Fairy. The heroine is Rumi, an apprentice at a homemade perfume studio who awakens as a Flower Child due to the power of a family heirloom. She's tasked with collecting and purifying the Rainbow Flower's scattered petals, only to clash with another Flower Child along the way and discover the surprising past of her feline mentor/sidekick.
Studio Pierrot's new anime - Studio Pierrot, which has made a variety of magical girl anime from TV originals like Creamy Mami to adaptations such as Tokyo Mew Mew, has announced that they're creating a new TV original magical girl anime. No specific details have been disclosed, but the caption for the teaser image ("I want you to sing once more...") implies that it'll be a magical idol anime.
Lolirock season three - After Lolirock's second season ended with a cliffhanger all the way back in 2017, it seemed like the story would never get a proper conclusion. However, the series's creator and director, Jean-Louis Vandestoc, announced on his Instagram in 2023 that creative meetings for a third season have begun.
Magic Knight Rayearth revival - TMS Entertainment is making a new Magic Knight Rayearth anime in honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, it's currently unknown what the format will be.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance - A new installment in the seminal Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise, this will be a new TV anime to celebrate the series's 20th anniversary. No other details are confirmed, but it will presumably be connected to the upcoming EXCEEDS manga that will begin in 2025.
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card season two - The sequel to the magical girl classic is getting a second season that will adapt the rest of the manga.
Magical Girl holoWitches - A multimedia project starring six VTubers as fictionalized versions of themselves who work as both streamers and magical girls who save people when they get trapped in the magical Holocas World. There was a four minute extended trailer in May 2024, but the anime's proper premiere date is unknown.
I Don't Want to Be a Magical Girl - An indie project by Kiana Khansmith, which follows the story of a burnt out magical girl named Aika. While she ran away from her duties in pursuit of a normal life, her position as a Protagonist causes her to get dragged into adventures anyway. Khansmith is currently hard at work on the pilot, which has a voice cast consisting of Anairis Quinones, Bennett Abara, Christine Marie Cabanos, Aleks Le, Shara Kirby, Michele Knotz, and Marieve Herington.
New Ojamajo Doremi thing - As part of the celebrations for the franchise's 25th anniversary, Toei Animation released two new music videos for the series' 1st OP and 4th ED with the promise that a new project will be made if the videos reach a combined 5 million views. This goal has since been met. Due to the girls being adults in the videos, the new project will presumably be an adaptation of the Ojamajo Doremi 16-20's sequel series of light novels.

due to popular demand I'm putting the WanPre movie plot under the cut
anything that's missing? i forgor. super spoilers for the entire movie.
Starts out with a mysterious egg coming from a computer screen in a laboratory. The egg escapes, glitching, and gets into Animal Town, voicing jealousy over the people taking care of their pets.
The precure find it, try to reason with it because it isn’t a Garugaru. But because it has ears and a tail and can speak, ending sentences in tanu, Wonderful calls it a Tanutanu. It gets angry. Grows giant. Attacks. The girls immediately pull out the Niko-sama full attack. It seems to work, but there’s nothing left when the attack is over. They transform back and, from behind a fence post, the egg sees them and is in awe that Wonderful and Nyammy are actually a cat and a dog. Thinking the fight is over they all head to pretty holic to play a new game they just bought. Satoru and Daifuku are also there and they’re set up with snacks and treats while they explain the premise of the game.
Essentially, animal crossing looking characters, on an island of tanuki, run races and people from all over the world compete against eachother with their custom animal avatars. Iroha makes a Komugi looking character on her (not switch) and Mayu makes Yuki. Satoru is playing on his pc and makes Daifuku. They all ask the animals how they feel about the lookalikes, and they all approve, even Daifuku through Komugi’s translation. She notes that he sounds as cool today as ever. Cut to the other special two teams of the movie. Ageha makes a little birdie who looks like Tsubasa, to his embarrassment. Mirai makes Mofurun, who is delighted. Haa-chan also thinks it’s super cute, but Riko can’t understand why any of this is fun.
They play a little, and Komugi gets really into watching Iroha and actually jumps at the screen, causing Iroha to mess up and drop the Komugi mascot off a cliff to wander in darkness, which really upsets Komugi...until Iroha promises that they will be together forever and nothing will ever keep them apart.
They are about to start another game when the mysterious Tanutanu egg reappears. It “hatches” splitting into two human sized tanuki. They say they have no need for dogs or cats. Just the humans. And there’s a bit of them trying different ways to persuade Iroha and Mayu to come with them including transforming into cute tiny versions of themselves. They fall for it, and get sucked through a portal. Yuki and Komugi also jump through, Komugi barely making it. Satoru is distraught, since they disappeared before his eyes. And then looks under the table to find that Daifuku is also missing.
In the game, Komugi is alone. And realizing that she is a weird hybrid of herself. A dog that stands on two legs! The tanuki appear and explain the rules to her. If she ever wants to see her precious Iroha again, she’s gotta win the games. Which is impossible! Good luck! She’s gifted with a ring (the item that anyone under middle school age is gifted upon entry to the movie theater, this year’s light up cheering item) and starts the race! Running to the first arena! First up is a rhythm game. The first Wanderful ed song plays and Komugi does her best to hit the buttons by herself. But she’s told that it’s a two player game and so she’s probably going to lose. She does her best, bouncing from button to button with no misses, until it looks like she’s going to miss one on the far side. Yuki hits it, with style and flair. And they finish the song perfectly.
They team up for the next arena, the dancing tama-ire. (Note, this is something little kids do on sports day, so it’s definitely an appeal to the small children of the audience).
The game starts with dancing. Another Precure song. Then the red and white balls drop down and everyone gets to throwing them into the basket. Notably, the avatars for mofurun and Tsubasa are in the mix without much focus. It’s random animals, the red team, against a team of all tanuki, the white team. And there are special balls in the mix. One Tanuki grabs one and suddenly becomes extra tall to block red balls from going in the basket. Komugi and Yuki also find special balls and become their Precure forms! Along with all the benefits they have with speed and agility. The other cure teams playing the game are shocked to see cures in the game. What could that mean?? Also the mysterious game programmer whose computer the egg from the opening bounced out of gasps that she didn’t program these characters…. Back to game. White team is winning by a small margin. Then it’s dance time again. And ball release. Repeat. They win it at the last second because Nyammy picks up like 300 balls and throws them all in at once. Somehow.
The next game involves turning a crank to move an elevator platform up a wall. It’s all tanuki NPC teams vs Komugi and Yuki, back in their animal forms, and the two tanuki who hatched from the egg. They’re asking why they’re trying so hard to save their humans. What could possibly be their motivations. Both animals have flashbacks of when their human partners rescued them. And declare that they’re going to be together forever. No matter what. They pull ahead to the top and win!! They’ve won the games!!
They’re allowed into the room with no exits that Friendy and Lillian have been trapped in with the NPC tanuki trying to make them feel better by turning into Komugi and Yuki (badly), and offering them fancy juice drinks and fanning them with leaves. The girls are overjoyed to see their pets again, happy hugging reunion. And then the boss tanuki appears. He’s huge. He’s wrapped in a green scarf. Intimidating. He offers to let them all live here in his game world forever. Never getting older or changing. Just being there to love and cherish the many tanuki, and also Komugi and Yuki since they won the games and proved themselves.
Satoru has been trying this entire time to get in contact with the game creator with Meimei cheering him on. The game creator has been typing codes into her computer, until the big tanuki, Mujina, appears. She recognizes him immediately, but calls him something else… He seems like hers very nice, until they refuse. Asking to be let back home to their families. He chose them because they love animals. Things seem at an impasse when suddenly. A very manly voice comes from behind the doors to the goal room.
It’s Daifuku.
In game rabbit form.
But now we can hear him speak and everyone is shocked. He is indeed as cool a character as Komugi has been telling us all this time. Mujina agrees to let the girls play one more game. The winner can get any wish granted that they want. The game is a tournament style balloon pop. Where everyone has a ball on their heads and a bat to pop it with. Except? It’s the 4 cures and daifuku against a full army of Tanuki NPCs, and Mujina on a throne. It looks hopeless. The cure teams watching feel like it’s hopeless…but maybe they can help? The mahou girls cast a Cure-up rapapa to try to get in there to help and send—
Mofurun!! By himself!! The game starts and he very cutely casts a little cure up rapapa of his very own to pop all the balloons in one go. (I was really hoping for cure Mofurun, but….) Winning the whole game at once! Everyone cheers, and he disappears as his job is done. Daifuku pops the final ball on Mujina’s head. It’s over. Mujina is upset but allows the girls their wish. They’re transported to a blank space full of stars, where a weird Tanuki made of constellations offers to grant them their any one wish. Daifuku murmurs that he wishes he could have done more on his own powers and.
YOUR WISH IS GRANTED.
Flash of light, it cuts to everyone standing around staring at Daifuku. Hes shocked because he didn’t mean to take the wish, and says that he isn’t suited to being a human. We still haven’t seen him. But Nyammy opens her compact for him to see his reflection…. He is still a rabbit. Nothing happened. The wish was a fake and Mujina never intended to let them go.
Then, finally. The mysterious programmer and Satoru manage to get messages to them in the game! The game creator, Natsuki, has been working to program a portal out of there. But they only have a few minutes to make it work. And Mujina has figured out that he’s being betrayed from the outside. He’s powering up, growing bigger and bigger. The cures (friendy grabs Daifuku) run to make it up the unnecessarily complicated winding staircase that Natsuki made for their escape. Being stopped by the NPC Tanuki and using the kirarin fox to turn into matching Tanuki along the way to escape. They get to the final staircase, and Mujina is a giant swiping at them, clawing and grabbing the footholds and desperately trying to get them. The girls wonder why he’s so desperate. What’s the reason he wants to keep them here so badly? They get to the top and reveal the ticket to getting out of there. The tanu-key. (Terrible pun, it was great).
Mujina attacks again, and the key flys out of Wonderful’s hands. It lands in the air, cracking the border edge of the game world and sticking in the crack. Wonderful makes a dive for it. Crashing through the border and disappearing into uncoded territory. Natsuki is horrified. There’s minutes left to unlock the portal and she has no idea what is beyond the game world that she coded.
Komugi wakes up in total darkness in her game-dog form. She can see a light from the crack and starts walking toward it. An illusion of Mujina taunts her. Why is she trying so hard to get out. He’s offering her everything. The chance for nothing to ever change. For Iroha to never leave her side. But Komugi refuses. She wants change. A stairway appears. She starts climbing up it. Running. She trips. Mujina keeps taunting her. But she gets up again. Running and running. Declaring that change is wonderful and everyday brings something new and someday she and Iroha will be old ladies together!!!
She breaks out, Wonderful again! Key in hand! For the 5th time in the movie they beat the clock by one second!!!! Unlocking the portal with their Friend RIngs.
They make it home! But they’re not the only ones out of the portal. Mujina has also escaped and gone full youkai form. A sleek spectral tanuki made of black energy, still wearing the green scarf. He sniffs. And bolts off. He’s looking for something.
The girls chase after him, leaving a relieved Satoru on the porch of Pretty Holic. And also a boy with gray hair that looks suspiciously like rabbit ears. Satoru knows him immediately and tells Daifuku that he’s so happy he can finally talk to him. They chase after the cures together.
The action really starts from here. Somehow we end up at Minato Mirai (like almost all the Allstars movies do!!) Mujina is running rampage, destroying things on his run until he finally slams into the red brick warehouses. The hirogaru girls make their entrance and pull off some great attacks, and also combo with the wonderful girls. Mujina gets away again, and this time the mahou girls come in and do the same thing. Everyone poses and does a signature attack. It’s exactly what we’ve been waiting for with the crossover.
He gets away again. He’s a tanuki on a mission. Except. He’s distracted by a guy walking and petting his dog in a display of human to animal affection. Mujina is pissed.
Satoru and Daifuku show up exactly then, running to try and save the guy and doggie. Wing sees this and makes a dive to save all of them. Flash of light. Both our bunny boys are in cure (?) form and save the day. Daifuku comments that it’s pretty alright to be like this and Satoru agrees.
Once again the tanuki gets free and climbs a building. It’s clear he’s going to Natsuki and she knows it too. She’s on the roof of a building, waiting for him. Everyone chases after and he finally stops, growling, facing her. And she calls him something like “pon-chan” or another generic Tanuki name that I’m forgetting and goes into flashback mode. As a child she had no friends. But one day she met a little tanuki in the park near her school. She would stop and talk to and play with him every day, and it was the highlight of her days. She confided in him that even though she didn’t like school much she loved her programming class. One rainy day she gave him a green scarf and promised that she would be back tomorrow and the day after and the day after forever. Until one day the park was under construction and being dug up by big machines and she never saw him again. She instead threw herself into programming her first game character so she could remember her friend forever. One of the NPC looking Tanuki but with a green scarf. She went on to make her game, get a grant, and a contract with a company to make it a reality. But she never forgot her friend.
She was sad because they could never talk and she couldn’t say goodbye. She wondered if her friendship was one sided. But the wonderful girls assure her that even if her tanuki friend couldn’t speak real words to her. The warmth she felt when she was with him and the memories she cherished were proof that they were friends. The animal girls go on to say that before they were cures it was the same for them. Even if you can’t speak the feelings come through. Mujina sparkles and turns into the programmed character Natsuki made all those years ago. And shimmers into the sky. They come down off the roof and say goodbye. The animals turn back into animals and Tsubasa reveals he’s actually a bird. Meimei appears and tells Natsuki that she’s not to repeat this to anyone at all ever. They invite her to animal town someday to play.
The ending theme plays and has stills of everyone going on a picnic and having fun, Daifuku is back to being a regular rabbit, but Komugi and Yuki are in human forms mostly. But there’s a few stills of them as animals with Mofurun and Tsubasa and Elle all being small and cute together. Final scene, a bush rustles and a tanuki steps out. He looks just like Natsuki’s old friend. Everyone laughs as the camera pans to the sky.
The end.

Wonderful Precure EP 44 made me cry
(Warning: SPOILERS and I talk about my own experences in pet loss as well)
So I normally don't cry at emotional scenes with the exception of Fairy Tail since that one punches you in the gut at times. I don't cry too often since I hate crying I did it a lot when I was younger so I try not to do it so much anymore. So when I watched ep 44 this morning and let me tell you I was NOT prepared
I had a bit of a feeling that Wonderful would address pet loss at some point considering this is a season focused on the bonds between humans and their pets/animals but I didn't think they'd go in this direction. This was a really good episode. I think it has to be one of the best episodes of WanPre and maybe all of Pretty Cure (my opinion) You can feel the love Otsuru has for Fuku and it's shown very well in the episode.
I did not expect Torame to stop the GaruGaru when he went to check up on Otsuru I kind of expected him to help them out and leave the Cures on their own to try and purify the GaruGaru. And since the next episode is focusing on Him and Iroha it shows that Tomare isn't just a heartless guy despite summoning the GaruGarus for the Cure to go agaisnt. The cruelity that he, Zakuro and Gaou faced hurt them so much that they're doing this however it's not right that they're hurting innocent animals and I wonder if next episode he'll realize this.
I teared up at the fact that Iroha's mom told Otsuru that Fuku didn't have much time yet I broke down the moment Komugi began to communicate how Fuku felt, the scene with Niko and Fuku, when Fuku was able to stand up and comfort Otsuru before passing in her arms, Otsuru's feelings about the time she spent with Fuku and the rainbow showing above the house symbolizing that Fuku crossed the rainbow bridge and went to heaven.
This episode opened up soime wounds in my heart that I thought had closed.
In 2022 my beloved dog passed away. She was a miniature schnauzer we adopted her from a breeder when I was 3 years old. She was very loving and loved play time but I never got to say goodbye to her as I was out of town visiting my mom and I didn't find out until two weeks later that she had passed in her sleep. She was already getting older and her health was deteriorating and didn't have much time left. I was so mad at my grandmother who didn't tell me when she had passed and my dad as he didn't let me grieve properly and sent me to church camp a few days later. Because of that I had a mental break down a few weeks later as I hadn't processed her death yet. It still hurts to think about it to this day as she was my best friend and I regret not being there to see her and I think this regret is going to follow me for the rest of my life. I think about her everyday
While i've lost pets in the past her death hit me much more as she had been there for as long as I could remember her not being with me was unbearable but I understand that she was becoming weaker as the days passed and I'm glad she's not suffering anymore. I know I'll see her again one day and that she doesn't want me to be sad so I keep her in my heart.
Wonderful Pretty Cure is an amazing season and has offically become one of my favorite seasons

it's really nice they made bunny satoru
like, it kind of sends the theory that they probably weren't planning to do that much with them but then everyone fell in love with them. the staff, the kids, the fans, the otaku who didn't even watch precure but heard about "yuichi nakamura shota bunny" and went to see the movie
Because the whole thing about the "they turn into animals" episode is it seemed to be a crossover with wanwan nyanyan day (11/22) and that's why they started selling the 'twin keychains' with the dog duo and cat duo at Pretty Store then. Have two dogs and two cats for woof woof meow meow day. It doesn't even really make sense to put the bunnies in there too.
So like maybe really early on in the planning stage they decided to make sure in an episode in November Iroha and Mayu would turn into animals, but by the time they got around to actually scripting it, they said "we can't let satoru be the only one who doesn't get to be an animal! he's part of the main cast! and we love him. also if we really go through with the Pretty Store collab merch idea we can put satoru and daifuku in a keychain too and people would definitely buy them. their acrylic stands always sell out just after yuki"
oh yeah, also, yoko uchida said she only actually designed rabbit satoru; dog iroha and cat mayu were done by the anime staff. So giving him an animal form was definitely a decision made at another time from the girls
basically what I think I'm getting at is it might be a sign they have consciously been putting satoru and daifuku into the show more than the original plan because they really grew on them
anyway that means if they've already been changing the plan to put more of the boys in they'll definitely have time to change more things in future episodes to include them in bigger roles /copium

Nothing about tonight's episode will be as big as the official reveal of the next Precure series, " Kimi to Idol Precure♪" (You & Idol Precure!) premiering February 2, 2025 (Groundhog Hedgehog IDOL DAY!)
Spoilers for Synopsis!
"I'm Sakura Uta, a second year student who loves to sing!
One day, while walking my dog, Kyu-chan, I was taken by surprise! A big peach-like thing came floating down the river, where I met the cute talking fairy, Purirun! Purirun has come to search for the Legendary Protectors "Idol Pretty Cure"! Purirun's hometown, KirakiLand was a peaceful place full of sparkles, but it has been plunged into total darkness by Darkine, the boss of the Chokkiri Gang. So together with Purirun, I decided to search for the Idol Pretty Cure who can illuminate the darkness with light! Maybe it should be the type of person who's bright and happy! But then the Chokkiri Gang appears in Hanamichi Town, and steals the sparkles of the townspeople... it's a huge pinch!
"I want to make it sparkle! With my song!"
The moment I made that decision, the Pretty Cure Ribbon and Idol Heart Brooch appeared, and I transformed into the Legendary Protector, Cure Idol!
Singing, dancing, and fan service♡ I'm going to make it sparkle no matter what! The stage between you and me is about to begin!" ~ Pretty Cure Fandom (Wiki)

Pro-curetember Day 26: Dancing!
Dancing is a fun prompt! There's so many dances in Precure, from the opening songs, to the ending songs, to some movie-exclusive tracks. Even in-show dances from certain teams! I decided I'd dance myself as part of this prompt, doing a dance cover of the short Promotional Instrumental version of Happy≒Future from the Wonderful Pretty Cure Movie
Here it is!:
[Video Description: A video of a girl in a pink-lavender room, wearing a pink pinafore dress with donut patterns, pink shirt, pink socks, and silver collar with the All Stars New Stage Miracle Decor Light attached as necklace decoration. She is performing the promotional instrumental version of the Happy≒Future dance from the Wonderful Pretty Cure movie of the Precure franchise. Her face has been censored with an image of Cure Wonderful's face.
She begins the dance by spinning around in a "Dabbing" pose, first clockwise, then counterclockwise as she alternates the "dabbing" arm. She proceeds to raise opposite arms up and down while turning her legs in a wide stance from left to right. This follows into her punching downward in a "dog-paw" motion, before jumping and raising her right hand to the air.
She then proceeds to do a punch-the-sky "dog-paw" motion with her left and right hands, alternating for four sky punches, before raising her left arm to about shoulder height, tilting onto the heel of her left foot. She raises her right arm to shoulder height and tilts onto the heel of her right foot, and proceeds to do this twice more.
Ducking down to the left slightly, she crosses her wrists over one another, then ducks down to the right as she uncrosses them. After doing this again, the turns sideways to the right and moves her left arm in a shoulder-height circling motion, while kicking her back leg, then front leg forward, and jumping into the air as she raises her left hand to the air.
She starts the punch-the-sky "dog-paw" motion again, and follows the same pattern described until the end of the song, ending with her left hand raised into the air and her right hand by her cheek. End Video Description]

Wonderful Precure Episode 44 Thoughts
I held back from watching this episode because I knew it'll deal with a heavy topic, but man...
Wonderful Precure Episode 44 made me cry.
I have two miniature poodles that I've adopted nine years ago and both of them are turning 14 next year (I don't exactly know their exact birthday, so I just use the day I adopted them as their birthday). One of them is already dealing with old age with constant coughing and heart problems.
I don't know how much more time he has left, but I'm doing my best to stay calm and strong.
Taking care of these two have been the longest I've taken care of a dog. The last time I had a dog, he died to heart complications before he reached two years old. His death hurt a lot.
I thought I'd be okay with coming to terms with either one or both of them dying later on, but this episode really showed that it is a complicated process no matter how much experience you have raising a dog.
You want them to live longer, but you also know that's just selfish, wishful thinking on your part. Unlike how Komugi can talk to dogs, you don't know what your dogs are saying, so you're not sure what sort of pain they're going through, yet they love you so much regardless.
I know that we all want our dogs to live just a little longer, but the thought of saying good-bye hurts more than experiencing it.
I honestly don't know how I'll deal with them being gone from my life later on, but I'll always keep them in my heart forever. Remembering them will keep them alive.
(My review of the episode will be up later)

So you loved Kira Kira Precure a la Mode, and/or some of the other seasons of the past 10 or so years. So you go to watch the season that started it all, and its probably not what your expecting. And there's a good chance you don't like it. That's fair. The two could not be more different. Now, Kira Kira Precure A la Mode is not a bad magical girl anime. Not by any stretch of the imagination. It has charming characters and creative battles. But is it a good Precure show? It is Futari wa Precure's antithesis. At least as much of an antithesis as it can possibly be while still being a show targeted towards young girls. Kira Kira Precure A La Mode is a colorful show, with 6-8 larger than life characters as they battle against hatred. They fight in confection themed outfits while wearing heels and being unabashedly cutesy. It's main protagonist always saving the day with an energetic "Whip Step Jump" or a "Bright Idea". To be fair, many modern Precure series are more similar to Kira Kira. Girls who are role models. Girls who chase after their dreams with everything they have. Who even without being Precure live extraordinary lives. There is only one Whip, there are many like her. There is no Cure like Black.
Now excuse me while I get really emotional and overdramatic about Futari wa Precure.
Futari wa Precure is not modern Precure, Modern Precure wouldn't really start until Fresh. Splash Star took the first steps, and Precure continues to evolve, but the first seasons of Precure, particularly the first 3 are not the Modern Cure. Futari wa Precure is not a story about Extraordinary girls, doing extraordinary things. It's not loud, nor bright spectacle. A show is not wrong for being these things. But these things are not Futari wa. It is a story about ordinary girls, who live ordinary lives, who fight against eternal forces that seek to destroy the normal things they hold dear, with only each other to count on. There are two sides to Nagisa and Honoka's lives. Their day to day lives, filled with people they love. Takoyaki and Chocolate and Dogs and Lacrosse and a million other simple things. Slice of life filled with unapologetically ordinary vibes. The world they seek to protect. And the things they do to protect it. The lonely brutal battles. The interruptions to their day to day. The threats on those they love. The villains dismissal of their important feelings and things in a battle that feels bigger than them. There are only the two of them. And 2 fairies who, themselves, only have each other, desperate refugees stuck in a world that makes them so tired that they cannot navigate it on their own.
And when I say there's no Cure like Black, I'm not exaggerating. There aren't many sporty lead cures anymore. But even when there were. There was no one like black. Melody, Rouge and Bloom are closest. But even then. Cure Black is not an optimist. She is not confident. Nagisa does not want to be a Cure. She does not want things to change. She bullies her little brother, she argues with her fairy. She is irresponsible and struggles to do things she dislikes. She hates fighting. But she fights anyway. She is not hope. She is courage. Because if she's going to die, she will die fighting. Bitterly.
When I say there hardly any Cures like Black, I mean there are also no Cures like White. We have cures into Science, though even now not many. And when we do, they are mostly into biology. (Doctors, Nurses, Marine Biologists, Botany). The closest we have is Himari, and her way of connecting sweets to science. We do have two cures who want to be astronauts (Tsubomi and Hikaru), but even then their primary interests are Botany and Cryptids respectively. Not that these are bad goals. But they are not White's more nebulous interest in science, that extends beyond the life sciences. Beyond domesticity. She loves learning, pure and simple. Honoka is well off, but gets her hands dirty. She is a woman of science, but takes the supernatural in stride. She is kind, but does things her way. She is graceful and polite, but temperamental and bold. In this way, Rhythm and Egret perhaps resemble her though not each other. Egret shares her independent nature, and mild obliviousness. Rhythm shares her temper and hands-onness. Honoka is hope. But she is not the loud Hope, like so many pinks, burning towards a dream. Burning with the possibilities. She is the quiet hope. The stubborn hope. She is the hope born of sorrow and things that cannot be. The hope that hears "This is the way it is" and says "No".
Cure Black and Cure White are not merciful. They do not redeem their enemies. A general hurts Black's brother and laughs. She kills him in rage. He was desperate. But she was vengeful. The enemies they fight are not all encompassing evil. They are darkness, and a threat that needs to be eliminated. But for many they merely want to survive. But so do Black and White. Cure Black and White fight, pitting the survival of their world against the survival of their enemies. It's them or her, and she chooses her and she loses. Her brother is vengeful and angry, and its him or them. And he chooses them. They lose a friend to this pointless struggle. But they continue on. The battle continues on. Honoka cries and cries for him. Did it have to be this way? It doesn't matter because it is. And there is no one she can talk to aside from Nagisa, and Mipple.
There is no one shouting to cheer on the Precure, no miracle lights. Those wouldn't come until Yes 5! They are merely rumors. A half seen fight. A figure seemingly out of a dream. Are they even real? Their imitators on the playground are more real than they are. Bring more smiles than they do. The universe is more vast than any of them could comprehend. There are entire other worlds with people who laugh and cry.
And there is no setting quite like Futari wa's setting. The setting in Futari wa, which I don't believe is named in show, is based on the Tokyo area. Not a made up city. A real one. Sure their school is fictional, as are the stores they visit. But the amusement park they visit is directly inspired by a real one. Nagisa lives in an Apartment building I believe to be modeled off a real one. They travel busy trains. Honoka's grandmother lived through war and tells stories of bombings. This is the Tokyo of a world not quite unlike our own. And perhaps most notably, this world is melancholic. Not bright.
Nagisa does not have pink hair. She does not have blond hair. She has orange hair. Not bright orange. Orangish brown. Though not one common in Japan, a real color. Honoka has black hair. Some might say blue. Although with its darkness its otherwise indistinguishable. It might as well be black. Shiho has red hair. And later Hikari will have blond. Kirya's will be green, but like Honoka so green it might as well be black. These may not be real hair colors, exactly. But they're close. Their muted. In the same way this is Tokyo but not.
With all of this said, there is still one core tenant Kira Kira holds to. It is still a story about girls, different kinds of girls, protecting the things they love. In Kira Kira, it is sweets. In Futari wa... its sweets.
Sweets. Precure was always about sweets go home.
#precure#futari wa precure#pretty cure#futari wa pretty cure#Futari wa and Kira kira could not be more different#Both good magical girls imo#but very different otherwise#Futari wa may have started the precure franchise#But it also followed Ashita no Nadja and Ojamajo Doremi which were more down to earth and weren't afraid to cover heavier topics#futari wa doesn't really do that but some of the tone definitely followed over

Random Wonderful Precure Thought
Can you imagine how hilarious a fish Pretty Cure would be? Like, just imagine one day your goldfish turns into a person and into a Pretty Cure. They just jump out of their tank, and grow legs.
And you know how Komugi turns back into a dog when she’s tired? Well, imagine out of nowhere they turn back into a fish, and just start flopping around on the floor. So you have to scoop them up and find water as soon as possible. I’d just carry a big water bottle with me everywhere I go. Also, they’d constantly forget that they can’t breathe underwater as a human, and they don’t know how to swim with legs. So you’ll have to save them from drowning a lot.
Animals can sense Garugarus, so your fish will know before you do. So you’ll either get jump-scared by them jumping out of your tank, or they’ll leave without you so you’ll come home to your goldfish gone.
Fish do much less than other animals, so when your human-goldfish tries conversing with others, it would be so awkward.
“So what’s your favorite food?”
Fish: “My pellets!”
“What do you do for fun?”
Fish: “Swim in circles! I also like to hide in my log.”
“Wow, you’re a pretty fast runner. Is it a hobby of yours?”
Fish: “Nope. I actually just learned to walk a few days ago.”
Just thought this was funny.
